Every day seems to be a new adventure here on "Still Waters Pond". Spring time is bringing new visitors to the pond almost every day. This is a wonderful time for us, as we have only lived here since late last summer, and so we have no idea who or what to expect in spring time! Actually, we saw our first young deer running along the shore of the pond early one morning this week. However, he saw me just as I was opening our blinds on the deck, and he made a very quick about face and ran in the opposite direction like he had seen a ghost! I know I don't look all that wonderful first thing in the morning, but really...that was a little insulting! Ha Ha! I was actually very excited to see him even briefly, as we have not seen any deer since moving here, and I was missing them. Sadly, I didn't have a chance to grab my camera before he was gone!
However, today was a different story and a different kind of critter! Beware: Excessive Photo Alert!!
Many of you will remember that I used to enjoy watching the Sand Hill Cranes in our previous neighborhood, and there are many past posts written about their lives, nesting, raising their young, etc. Since moving to this neighborhood we have not seen very many of these interesting creatures up in this area, and I must admit that I was also missing them much like I was missing our frequent deer sightings.
Maybe they are checking out that new bluebird house that we just put up yesterday in hopes of attracting Mr. Bluebird and family to nest here! I do believe this kind of "nest" would be a bit too small for the Crane Family!!
They did give me a good looking over as they passed by, and they hurried on along the shore hoping to put some distance between us real quick like!
Then they decided to venture into the water a little further...
And further...
While the other braved the "deep" waters of the pond to head toward the island...
Again, this one stayed close to shore...
He's the bold one...going where no man has gone before...
Oh, but eventually they both ended up on the island...perhaps they are checking it out for suitability for nesting???
Looking every direction...
Kind of reminds me of the little song, "The bear went over the mountain, the bear went over the mountain, the bear went over the mountain, to see what he could see...to see what he could see, to see what he could see... (have you heard enough yet? Are you singing along?)
And so this one decided that things look better back over on the other shore...
And decided to test the waters again and head back in that direction...
There he goes (which is actually heading back toward our shore beside our house).
The other one put one toe in the water and decided to stay put on the point of the island, and wait for her partner to do the exploring...(she's the NOT so bold one!)
She stood there waiting so demurely...
Let's go find God's Adventure for us today!
It would be sooo interesting to see what you discover if/when you don the high boots and walk through the pond to the island. Just be so careful! Make sure somebody is close at hand to watch you in case you encounter a hidden hole!
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday!
Thank you, Barbara! Wanna come explore with me??? We could be like Robinson Crusoe on the island, and have a little picnic. LOL. I probably won't get that adventuresome at least until it warms up a bit. What happened to spring???BRRR!!!
DeleteI love all the wildlife you can see just from sitting on your porch. It would entertain me for some time :-) I don't consider myself to be an adventurous person. In fact, I think I can be quite cautious. But most people who know me think I'm adventurous so I guess it is all in the perspective, lol. I would probably walk across the pond but it is good to have on tall boots or hip waders since you never know what kind of bacteria you can pick up in the 'wild'. I would love to see what is on the island but probably it's best to wait until you are recovered from surgery. Oh and take a very tall pole to hold on to as you walk...and make sure someone who can swim is there to watch over you. See there is the cautious side of me, lol. Enjoy your day.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all of the precautions. I know it is quite shallow, and I also know how to swim, but it is the unknowns of what is in that water that keeps me out of it. I don't want to rile up some snake from the bottom...although I have lived in Florida most of my life and swam in many lakes, but I was younger and not as wise back then. The pole is a good idea, because I know the bottom is muddy and I might slip. I'll probably wait a while to do this. Unless curiosity just gets the better of me...LOL. Thank you for visiting today. Yes, we could enjoy life from the porch quite well!
DeleteThese Sandhill cranes are simply beautiful, Pamela - I love that you were able to get such close up shots of them! Hoping that they will decide to settle down at your lovely pond. And if you do decide to wade in the water, just know you're more adventurous than I would be - lol!
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you!
Ha ha! You will have to wait and see my next adventure post! LOL.
DeleteOh!!! I loved this. I love birds and so this is right down my alley. AS for walking into that water, no, I wouldn’t be brave enough for that, but if you want, I'll be on shore taking pictures of you as you go. In other areas of my life, I have learned to take a stand and speak up for myself.
ReplyDeleteha ha! You will have to come back for the next episode of this new "adventure" to see how bold and daring I am. LOL. As for other areas, learning to stand up for oneself is very important in this day and age. I realize that for you it was sadly born of necessity, but so wonderful that God has enabled you to be strong and have the courage to speak up when needed to take care of important issues in your life. We can always depend on Him to help us when we need Him the most. Thank you for 'speaking up' here today. Have a blessed day my friend.
DeleteThe cranes are beautiful! I sure hope they decide to nest on your island!! Do keep us posted!
ReplyDeleteCould those cranes have missed you and your family and followed you to your new neighborhood? Just a thought from your silly friend who has had lots of time on her hands.(Under the weather.) Enjoyed your pictures.
