For the Love of Old Books

I wonder how many of you have a love for old books? Over the years I have collected some very old books, primarily from a couple of favorite authors who are long gone and out of print, but they wrote such interesting, old-fashioned, clean but adventuresome, romantic but mysterious thrilling novels.

Here's a few of my favorites: This first shelf (below) is primarily from one author, Mary J. Holmes. Most of her books were written before the turn of the 20th century, in the late 1800's.
Below are a couple of the covers of her books. They are so old they are falling apart. Many of these books I found at estate sales and/or bookstores that sell old books. I've had these for at least thirty years! They are that good that I don't want to get rid of them.
You can't find these in any library today.

I  found this bookmark in one of the books:

(Back)

Wouldn't you like to have some of those "Five Good Things to Have in the Home"? Ha Ha. I believe they will cure most anything that ails you!

I am not sure exactly how I got started on these particular authors.  George Barr McCutcheon was
one of my mother's favorite authors and she shared his books with me, so that explains that...and apparently even her mother, my grandmother, enjoyed reading his books,

because this one in particular was in my grandmother's collection...

and it was passed down to me from my Grandpa Tedlie after my Grandma Tedlie passed away:

As you can see, it is quite vintage...copyright in 1906!  My Grandma and Grandpa were married in 1901, so perhaps she had this book from the time it was brand new!

Don't you love these wonderful illustrations?

They certainly make you want to start reading to find out exactly who's who and what's what!
And that is what I am planning to do. I am sure I have read this book many times over the years since first receiving it in 1967...but usually enough time goes by between readings so that the details have been forgotten to make it seem brand new again. (Nowadays that doesn't take very long...)

While flipping through the pages to look at the illustrations above, this little "Easter" card fell out of the book.  Apparently it was being used as a bookmark, and by the looks of it, it is also quite vintage. It must have belonged to my Grandmother, which makes it even more special to me.

This picture of my Grandma Tedlie was taken about the same time this book was written!

This is my Grandma many years later, but still before I was born:

I guess I'm getting a little side-tracked here.  The reason for looking at these old books was because I found myself between library books and looking for something from my own collection to read until I can get back to the library to check out some new books.  I've ordered some books online from the library, but it takes a while for them to locate all of the ones selected and send them to our local library where they can be checked out.  If our local library branch doesn't have all of the ones in a certain series or by a selected author that I want to read, they can usually be found in some of the other branches of the county library system and sent to our local branch usually within a few days of when I requested them.  If timed just right, by the time I get finished with one stack of books, the next batch is ready and waiting for me.  However, this time, for whatever reason, they haven't shown up yet and I was finished with the others and getting anxious to read something else! Reading is my evening entertainment while hubby enjoys watching sports or other programs on the TV.  (and reading library books is FREE!!)

Of course, my other form of entertainment is sitting here at the computer and reading the things my friends write on their blogs or on Facebook and then also sitting here and writing my own blog like I am doing right now (instead of reading the book I was wanting to read! LOL! I do get side-tracked quite often!)

Do you have any favorite "old books" that you treasure and enjoy reading over and over again? Would love to see what you have or hear about your favorite "old" authors.

Well, it's getting late and if I am going to get up in time to go to Sunday School in the morning (at 8:00 am), then I'd better quit yakking here and start getting ready for bed. Guess I sort of ran out of reading time for tonight...but I hope you enjoyed seeing these interesting antique books with me.
Have a peaceful good night and a blessed SONday tomorrow!

  1. Oh how I love old books! I was able to buy some from a big book sale that they had every year in NC at very reasonable prices and start a little collection. I was drawn to the old poetry books and classics. I think I have a couple they you have....I'll have to look to be sure. It's like a treasure hunt to find old books at thrift stores and library sales. They make me happy. I would like to read a little poetry every day....I should make that a new goal! Love seeing the beautiful books you have and some of the illustrations. And to find old cards etc inside is a joy, isn't it? Have a beautiful and blessed weekend! Hugs, Diane

    1. I do believe that you and I are kindred spirits...old books, dolls, hiking the wonderful trails and woods of our beautiful central Florida and taking lots of pictures of wildlife, etc.. I do believe we need to get together and compare notes! LOL. Thank you for writing. Yes, I purchased most of my old books at estate sales, thrift stores, etc., and tried to never pay more than $1.00 or $2.00 for books. I haven't seen any of these particular authors in many years...probably because they are so old they are literally falling apart. But the stories are so great! They just don't write books like these anymore! Wish you were closer...we could share books and be our own little lending library! Have a blessed evening and day tomorrow!!

  2. Expels worms! Oh my. But you know what is most amazing about that bookmark? The prices! Cure all that ails you for 10 cents. There is not even a cents key on my keyboard. What happened to cents?? Maybe it was expelled with the worms.

These old books sound good for the soul. You know what I mean? TV shows, some of them, and movies lately are so violent, a kind of casual violence that is disturbing. These stories of women in neat, long gowns meeting up a great love sound so ... fulfilling.

Bless you, Pamela. This post was a breath of fresh air.

Thank you for your comment on my post! It was very encouraging.☺️

    1. Thank you, Sandi. I know, I wonder where the cents key went too...it just makes no "sense". Yes, I enjoy these old books because they were clean and still very entertaining and always had a good moral to the story. The language was puritanical for the most part, as was the "romance". It was still the "Victorian Age", and life was very different then from what it is now. Glad you enjoyed this post. And you are welcome for my comment...You always make me "think"!! That's a good thing!!

  3. I adore old books, Pamela, and I'm quite envious of your marvelous collection! And that antique bookmark? What a hoot! I'm currently reading some Dorothy Sayers mysteries, still in print, but I do have some older copies on my shelf, too. Dated in some ways, but still mesmerizing. Great reads never die, do they?
Blessings, my friend, and happy reading!

    1. I am not familiar with Dorothy Sayers, so I may have to see if I can find one. Libraries don't keep the really good older books unless of course they were very well known. I don't mind books that are "dated"...it helps us to learn from a different era how people thought and acted. Mostly I am surprised that they were very much like we are today...just more "refined". Yes, that bookmark was hilarious. Probably mostly filled with alcohol or some other secret ingredient that wouldn't be allowed today! LOL. Have a blessed day my friend.

  4. There is nothing like the smell of an old book or any book for that matter, smiles. I could live in a library, grin.

    Have a great day, friend.

    1. I know what you mean, Linda. Although some of my old books probably really don't smell all that good, and they are so old they are very brittle and falling apart, but I keep trying to keep them together. Someday when I am gone I expect my books will be gone too, as no one else will want to keep musty old books. I could live in a library too, if they had some "old books". They don't keep these old gems. I really get excited if I stumble upon these ancient volumes in an old bookstore or thrift store, and especially if they are selling them for under $2.00. That is my limit! :)

  5. I love your old books, I recognized some of the them from some of my Mother's books. I have an old book that belonged my great grandfather, it's a treasure.

    1. Thank you, Mary. I guess our mothers knew what good books were! A book from your Great Grandfather would really be very special! That would be a "keeper" for sure!

  6. Lovely old books!! I have donated all of my books except for art books I have collected through the years. I used to have some Zane Gray books that were fun to read. Westerns with frontiersmen and Indians. I just don't have room for many books now. I use my Kindle and don't really miss turning pages by hand. I'm glad for people who still have them though!

    1. I have never read the Zane Grey books and I would love to have done so. John's grandmother had a collection of those, but they went to one of her other daughters. I know they are quite collectible. I don't have a lot of room for books either, but I won't get rid of these. We did purge quite a few books when we moved. I know I could get rid of a few more, but they aren't books that anyone else wants either. I don't buy books anymore, unless I know the author personally, like some of our blogging friends who have written books. Anything else that is newer I check out from the library. I've never tried a Kindle. I'm just too old fashioned when it comes to reading for relaxation and pleasure. Love to feel that book in my hands! We are all different, and I am glad there are so many ways people can read nowadays!!

  7. Do you have English Orphans by Mary Jane Holmes? My MUCH OLDER sister (12 1/2 years - that's how I used to get even with her for introducing me as her baby sister) kept talking about a book she read many times when she was young which I had never heard of. For her 75th birthday I found a used copy of the book, English Orphans, on-line. It wasn't in pristine condition but certainly a readable copy (which I read before I presented it to her for her birthday with the notation that I had found something older than her!). She was thrilled and shared it with her four daughters and probably some granddaughters too. She's been gone three years now; I don't know who ended up with the book but this neat post of yours made me think of this - thanks for the memories.

    1. Hello Joyce! I don't believe that I've ever seen that particular book by Mary J. Holmes! I have so many of them that I thought I must have them all, but she was a prolific writer! Now I must look for that! I don't believe I've had the pleasure of meeting you here before, and was wondering if you are the Joyce F. that I knew in Conway NH? If so, welcome to my blog, and thank you for visiting. If you are a different Joyce, then welcome to my blog also! I like to get acquainted with the new friends I meet here! Thank you for visiting!! I know you must miss your "much older sister". My older sister is 4 1/2 yrs. older than I, and I always refer to her as my "little Big sister" because she is much more petite than I am. Consequently, I am her "Big little sister". Not sure I like that BIG part, but I started it. Have a blessed day and thank you for visiting. Please come again.

    2. I'm Joyce F from Kansas. I don't have a blog but enjoy reading quite a few. I especially like the book posts and get lots of ideas for what to read next from them. I don't buy many books any more (Louise Penny series being an exception) but use the public library. They belong to a consortium and can get most books I request, or can get them throuh inter library loan from Kansas libraries further away.

I don't remember how I happened on to your blog but I enjoy reading it.

    3. Well, however you got here, I am happy you arrived, and hope you will be back again!! Now I need to find out about the "Louise Penny Series". I also use the public library here in central Florida, and it has been such a joy to me as they do carry many books that I enjoy. Very thankful for the public library system! Have a blessed and wonderful day!

  8. The illustrations in your books are lovely. The clothing, the hair styles, the flowers and gardens, the genteel spirit of things -- Love all that. But I'm more a reader of non-fiction most of the time.

You need a stack of books to read while you recuperate from your upcoming surgery, so yes, this is the time to prepare for that!

    1. Thank you, Barbara. Yes, I really love the illustrations. Even though I enjoy seeing how women dressed "way back when", I am thankful we don't have to dress like that today! I do read some non-fiction also, but when I want to just relax and enjoy reading, it is usually fiction. However I am very choosy about what I read. Mostly Christian authors, but these very old vintage books from before and around the turn of the 19th-20th Century are quite safe! LOL. They didn't use such horrible language back then and their "love scenes" were quite tame and sweet. It was still the "Victorian age", and there was always a good moral to the story. Plus, anything my grandmother or my mother would read had to be pristine! I don't watch much TV, and I don't do "handwork", so this is my "escape to another world" for a while. Yes, I am trying to make sure I have plenty to read when I am recuperating. That will help me escape from feeling like I should be cooking or cleaning or doing something...LOL.
