The Day of Pentecost

I shared this post again last year, when we couldn't be together for church because of the "pandemic". Today I am excited to be able to worship in person again in our beautiful sanctuary. Here is a link to our pastor's sermon for today, as well as the choir's anthem: "He Is Here/ Holy Spirit, Thou Art Welcome in This Place".  I was not present at choir practice when they recorded this song, but I will be there today singing it with the choir in person. Wish you could come join us. But hopefully you are also now able to attend church in person at your place of worship.

Have a blessed Pentecost Sunday! Don't forget to wear red in commemoration of this special day!

This is the original post written last year, which was an update from a previous year:

May 31, 2020
Since we will not be meeting in the traditional way at our church today, I wanted to share the "sermon notes" and post from last year's Pentecost Sunday.  Seeing this again, with the pictures of our dear friends in our church, at first made me a little sad because it has been so long since we have all been together like this, but then it also made me happy to see us in that place, in one accord, and to know that we will be together again, hopefully soon...but also because of the gift of the Holy Spirit to us at Pentecost, the church is still alive and vibrant today...wherever we are.  We carry God's Holy Spirit with us wherever we go, and we are sent out as His ambassadors to spread His love and peace and salvation to everyone.  May we continue to carry out our mission regardless of whether or not we are able to meet within the physical walls of our church buildings.  We are the church! Let us each do our part in this sadly hurting and divided world today.

Original Post 6/9/2019:

Today is Pentecost Sunday...the Sunday set aside in the traditional church calendar to remember and celebrate the day that the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, who were gathered "with one accord in one place..." (Acts 2:1).  Acts 2:2-3 tells us that

"Suddenly there came a sound from heaven,
as of a rushing mighty wind,
and it filled the whole house where they were sitting...
Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire,
and one sat upon each of them."

We celebrated Pentecost Sunday in our church in several ways...

Our choir members all wore red in commemoration of Pentecost Sunday:
Here's a few pictures of our choir during the prelude:

Our wonderful choir director, Carol, pictured above

There's always that one who is ready for mischief no matter where we are...  😇  She knows who she is...

Some of my fellow altos

This "banner" below was created especially for today out of various hues of bright orange crepe paper, and it "flickered" like a flame to represent the flame of the Holy Spirit:

We sang many hymns specifically about the Holy Spirit, and as we sang and prayed and listened to the message from God's Word, the thunder pounded, the wind blew and the rain poured down upon our little church in torrents, much like the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. We felt the power and presence of God in our midst today in many ways.

The message came from Acts 2:1-21 in particular, but also included many thoughts from the whole 2nd chapter of Acts.

What was interesting in the beginning of the message was the fact that the Day of Pentecost was only seven weeks after the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. And if you go back to that time, you will remember that Peter had denied knowing Christ three times on the night Jesus was betrayed...and the other disciples also ran and hid for fear of the soldiers and what they would do to them.  And then Christ arose from the dead, and was seen by the disciples and many others during the forty days after His resurrection...and then they beheld him ascending back up into the clouds to heaven just about ten days prior to this day of Pentecost.  He promised them He would send the Holy Spirit to them...and so they were waiting.

So here it is, just seven weeks after the trauma of Christ's death, and they waited and wondered what would happen next. But look at the 2nd Chapter of Acts...As they waited together in one accord, they were all filled with the  Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (verse 4)   And people from everywhere heard them speaking in their own languages, and they understood them...and they were amazed.

And this this same Peter, who had denied Christ seven weeks earlier, now stood up and began to preach...and He read to them from the Prophet Joel, and then explained to them about Jesus, and who He was, and all the prophecies concerning Him...and as Peter preached, the Bible says in Acts 2:41

"Then those who gladly received his word were baptized;
and that day about three thousand souls were added to them."

The time of "Pentecost" was already a Jewish festival, or a feast of the firstfruits, a time to celebrate the harvest.  And now, at this time, God was adding a new meaning to this festival or time...it was a harvest of souls...Remember when Jesus said to His disciples, in Matthew 9:37-38,
"The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.  Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest"...

Well, here we see the beginning of that great harvest, and it is still continuing today...there were 3,000 souls added that day, and then there were 5,000...and the numbers continued to rise day after day, year after year, until today some 2000 plus years later, and Christianity is the largest "religion" in the world today.  (However, true believers recognize that Christianity is more than just a religion...it is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ)...

The days of signs and wonders are not over. We've just gotten lazy and blind to what God is doing and what He wants to do in our world today.  We, as individuals, need to allow God's Holy Spirit to empower us for service in His kingdom.

Again...just seven weeks after Peter could not even admit he knew Jesus, he was speaking and preaching the Gospel to thousands through the power of the Holy Spirit...

Jesus still offers salvation for all today.  Because of the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Church exists to offer that gift of salvation to all of mankind.

Where are you headed?  Are you feeling life is at a dead end, or do you dream dreams and see visions (Acts 2:17)...

Jesus wants to transform you into the person He desires you to become for His glory, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is still alive and active and powerful 2000 + years later. It is our job to proclaim this Good News to all generations.

One of the hymns we sang today was "Breathe on Me, Breath of God".  I love this one, and can remember singing this song as a young person at youth camp:

"Breathe on me, Breath of God,
fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
and do what Thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will
To do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Till I am wholly Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
Glows with Thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, Breath of God.
So shall I never die,
But live with Thee the perfect life
Of Thine eternity."

It was hymns like this, along with the teaching of God's Word, and the power of the Holy Spirit enlightening my eyes and mind to understand, that has brought me this far in my walk with Christ. I pray that He will continue to teach me and help me grow in my faith in Him, and that others will see Christ living in me and seek to know Him for themselves.

Our closing song today was another great benediction of God's grace and love:

Spirit Song, written by John Wimber:

"O let the Son of God enfold you
with His Spirit and His love;
Let Him fill your heart and satisfy your soul.
O let Him have the things that hold you,
and His Spirit, like a dove,
Will descend upon your life and make you whole.

Chorus:
Jesus, O Jesus,
come and fill Your lambs.
Jesus, O Jesus,
Come and fill Your lambs.

"O come and sing this song with gladness
as your hearts are filled with joy;
Lift your hands in sweet surrender to His name.
O give Him all your tears and sadness;
give Him all your years of pain,
and you'll enter into life in Jesus' name.

Chorus:
Jesus, O Jesus,
come and fill Your lambs.
Jesus, O Jesus,
Come and fill Your lambs.

Sermon Notes: FUMC, Interlachen, FL, Pastor A.C. Myers, 6/9/2019

Please Note : I want to repeat this disclaimer here...the notes, outline, and content included here are based upon my own personal understanding of the message that was being given. I am not attempting to completely quote or reproduce this message or any other message I've shared previously. Just as each person reading these notes may glean insights and thoughts that seem to directly apply to one's own situation and interpretation, my own delivery of these messages is skewed by my hearing and translation of what is being said. Some may read my notes here and wonder if they were hearing the same message as I...and I say, God speaks to each of us as He wills...there are things He is trying to get across to each individual that may be entirely different than what the person sitting next to you in the pew is needing to hear... That is how the Holy Spirit works! He knows what we need to hear and how to apply it to our hearts. So it is with that understanding that I present these sermon notes to you.

  1. Pam: Thank you for this recap of the sermon you heard today. I especially needed to read the words of The Spirit Song. God,through the Holy Spirit, is present in our lives each day. Sometimes, we have to be reminded of that.

  2. Pamela you know it isn't easy for me to get to church on Sundays and when I come by your blog on a Sunday like today I truly feel I've been in the service along with you. Thank you so much for your wonderful message of Pentecost Sunday and thank you for allowing me to "come" along with you to church. Have a blessed evening my friend.

    1. Oh, Toni, I am SO glad you "came to church" with me today! Praise God! You are always welcome here! That also helps me to know that I need to continue doing this, even after our current pastor has retired and we have someone new. I am praying that I will still be able to do that with his blessings. You are a blessing to me, and I am so glad we have this friendship, even if it is across the miles. When hearts are united in Christ, the miles just don't even exist. !!

  3. Such an inspiring story not only about Peter and how he went from denying Christ to bringing so many souls into the Kingdom in short order but also the fact that so many, many were added to the Kingdom at this time. So much for us to ponder as to what we are doing for Christ. Thanks Pamela for the inspirational Word.

    1. And that is the power of God's Holy Spirit in action! He takes a bumbling fisherman and turns him into a powerful preacher for Christ, even without a seminary degree! Therefore, He can take any of us and do the same if we are willing!!

  4. p.s. I loved seeing all the choir members in red. Do you have any videos of the choir singing posted on You Tube?

    1. Thank you...no I don't have any videos. I know someone took some at Easter, so I may need to check with them to see what they did with them. We are a small country choir, and we sing for the glory of God, but I'm not too sure how we sound in recordings...might be a good thing to check! Thank you for asking!

    2. I understand. I grew up in a small church with a very small choir. We weren't there to record and put on You Tube cause that was in the days before You Tube, anyway, lol. But I get your meaning. It's great that you are all singing for the glory of the Lord.

  5. Pentecost -- celebrating the birthday of the Church. I had not thought of it quite that way before, but you're right! Your photo of the camp fire to illustrate the tongues of fire is very effective. You have such a way with photography. I hope you always live in places that allow you to be as creative with your camera as you are now.

    1. Yes, this message was "enlightening" to me in several ways as well. I think it is good to remember these historic meaningful times in our church history, as we look back at what God was doing then...and see where we have gone from there, and now look to the future and what is next in store for The Church...Personally, I am looking forward to the day when Christ returns to call us up to heaven together to be forever with the Lord. But we still have work to do here first. Thank you for your kind thoughts regarding my photography. I hope you are right, that I will always be able to use this little camera for God's glory wherever I am. It has been a special gift that I am very thankful for. Thank you for your acknowledgement of that. Such a blessing!!

  6. Just seven weeks after (I'm reminded of Peter's asking Jesus if he should forgive seven times), Peter is immersed in the Holy Spirit, and knows fully his mission on earth for Christ's sake. All those with him knew it, too. How blessed we are that Jesus kept His promises then, and keeps them to this day! May we sing God's praises loud and clear on a daily basis, Pamela!
Blessings always to you and yours!

    1. Yes, God is still keeping His promises to us, the Church, and also to His people Israel. We do have much to praise Him for every day, if we just take the time to notice all that He has done and is doing and wants to do for us forever. We are blessed beyond measure. Thank you for your thoughts today. Always wonderful to hear from you.

  7. Pam, thank you for sharing this. Pentecost Sunday is a special one to me for many reasons--most of which is hard to put into words. Oh, how I long to see the power that birthed the Church--the power that is still available to us today. The power to work signs and wonders and so much more.

The hymns you mentioned are ones that I'm familiar with; I especially like "Spirit Song by John Wimber.

    Blessings!

  8. OH! Pamela, this is so encouraging, especially with all that is going on in our country, I agree the days of signs and wonders are not dead, without the guidance, and teaching of the Holy Spirit I don't know what I would do, He walks with me all through the day as I go about my daily life, and He gives me sweet rest as I sleep.
Thank you so much for your most encouraging posts.
    Blessings,
    Sue

  10. This was refreshing, Pamela. Thank you for resharing it! I can't believe I did not comment last year. How did I miss it? 😄

"do you dream dreams and see visions (Acts 2:17)..."

I have some, but not lately. I'd like to!

I hope you are finding ways to enjoy this odd time we are in. Things are starting to get back to normal here. I am noticing there are not as many masks at the stores. I am taking that as a good sign, but I am not sure. It's quiet.

"Spirit Song" by John Wimber is one I really enjoy singing.

    Love and blessings!

  12. Thought I'd pop over to your other blog for a visit, and have added you to my blog log to make visiting back and forth easier. Back in the day, way back in the day I was an Alto. 2nd Alto for a couple of years. I often had laryngitis in the fall and winter months. I now know I apparently had allergies, but who knew back in the dark ages, lol. One year when I wasn't afflicted the choir director was surprised that I didn't have a low voice after all. Though I was never really very good, had trouble with pitch, so only did choir a few years. My daughter luckily inherited her musical genes from my parents and not me. She sings beautifully, and throughout this long year she's been recording some at home. They mostly took turns turns so they didn't have the whole choir together. She and another primary voice sang solo with a someone playing the flute and someone on the piano. She sang behind plexiglass with a special mask for choir. Is that similar to what your choir has done? One of the churches very close to use here in the neighborhood has been having services outside of late, after doing on line services earlier. The other day they had some folks standing by their cars, others on blankets and some with folding chairs. Some had up umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun. I didn't see a choir, but believe I passed by just as the end of the service, so it might have already disbanded. It's interesting how differently the various churches have responded to their congregations. Some have been quite creative. Like you I have multiple blogs: A travel blog, a charity blog dedicated to helping the homeless through knitting and crocheting, and my personal blog, Sandy's Space. Feel free to check out the others as well.

    1. You are very industrious to have several blogs, as well helping the homeless with your talents. That is such a blessing! You are very gifted indeed. Regarding how churches have "worshipped" throughout the pandemic...we started out last year with online messages and our praise team met weekly to also record some hymns/songs to include with the pastor's message. We social distanced ourselves, but did not wear masks for singing. Then sometime last fall we started meeting in our fellowship hall because we could space out more, but continued to wear masks to the services. We also kept the online recorded message on our website each week. We continued to meet in the FH until Easter, when we felt safe to move back into our Sanctuary for worship, again socially distanced as much as possible and wearing masks. Our choir was able to sing from the choir loft area, socially distanced. We have purposely kept our choir to a small number so we could maintain social distancing. Finally, just this past Sunday the bishop for our district said that churches are able to remove their masks indoors now. We have been very blessed to have not lost any members to COVID, and really didn't even have any who were hospitalized. That is pretty remarkable since our congregation is primarily made up of retired folks, most over 70. So we rejoice and give thanks to the Lord for keeping us safe. Some of the churches in the area did have drive in services outdoors for a while, but most all churches here in this area have been back indoors for a while now. We do still continue to have the online service as seen above, and probably will continue to do so for the sake of those who are shut in or still not comfortable in coming out for services. We are a very small congregation, but very big in spirit and heart and hope! I am happy to hear about your daughter's singing. And yes, it is interesting to see how different groups have creatively come up with ways to continue worship even when things have been very difficult to do so. A wonderful tribute to the Spirit, who is alive and well in the children of God! I will check out your other blogs. It is great to make new friends. I see you are from Ohio...may I ask whereabouts? We have lived in Ohio several times in the past, while my husband was in Seminary in Ashland, OH, and while pastoring in the Dayton area and in Willoughby Hills, near Cleveland...many years ago now. Florida is our home state, so even though we wandered around a bit over the years, we ended up back home. But we loved Ohio and have fond memories of our times there.
