Tuesday 4~Fall Traditions and Memories

I'm late with the Tuesday 4, but you know the old saying, "better late than never".

Fall Traditions & Memories

Welcome to another Tuesday 4 a fun meme started by Toni Taddeo.

It is Halloween , all Hallows Eve and tomorrow is All Saint's Day. Originally these days were to remember the deaths of Christian martyrs but things have certainly changed and the dark, the scary and remnant of Samhain (So-Win) have been introduced.

I waited until tonight on Halloween to write this post, so I would have some new pictures to share from this evening's fun.

1. What is your opinion of Halloween?  I wrote about this in my post yesterday, and this is basically what I said:
"On Halloween, we look forward to the children coming to our neighborhood for Trick or Treat. It is one way we can be friendly and neighborly and let the children (and their parents) know that we care about their kids.  I love to see their cute costumes and their happy faces as they come to the door for the candy. Our world is getting so sad and scary and there just aren't very many safe and happy ways to do things in our communities anymore. I'm glad that there are churches who also provide a happy time for the kids with a "Trunk or Treat" event in a safe environment.  I think if we can capitalize on the fun aspect of this "holiday" rather than just dismiss it as something bad, we can use this opportunity for a positive way to reach out to the children of our communities. That's my thoughts on it, for what it's worth.

Happy Halloween from our house to yours:
Rose with Sugar and Spice, me with the candy bowl, and hubby John on the porch with Lily Grace...

And here's a close up of Lily Grace and her dog Bailey.  She wanted to be a "Rock Star" for Halloween...

I've had this ceramic jack o' lantern for many years. It was a gift from my Aunt Marion...(cousin Becky's mother).  Miraculously it has survived many moves and still looks great!

The scarecrow didn't scare anyone away. We had quite a few trick or treaters, but they mostly came when it was already getting dark and I didn't get any pictures of them this year.

But we enjoyed these two little trick or treaters...Sugar and Spice and every thing nice!
Back inside after the action is over...

2. Memories are important. Some of them are seasonal good times. What fall memories and traditions can you share with us?
Seems like I've talked about this before... If you really want to know...click on THIS LINK for lots and lots of fall memories.

3. Stews, soups and chili dishes warm the tummy on chilly fall days. Have you a good recipe to share for a good fall dish?  No special recipe that I haven't already shared, but one thing we do enjoy occasionally is a good old bowl of Campbell's Tomato Soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. This was just the other day...Sorry I already took a couple of bites out of the sandwich before I thought to take a picture. But it was so good and I couldn't wait!

Another tradition we love in the fall is homemade applesauce with biscuits for breakfast. I finished up the last of our Georgia apples with this dish of applesauce...

And served it hot over biscuits.   HERE is a post I devoted to this tradition from many years ago.

Another fall recipe we love is Hobo Stew. HERE is a post with the recipe.

4. Fall is football season. Are you a fan of any teams? Do you watch games>
This picture was taken on Saturday, while hubby was watching the Florida Gators vs. the Georgia Bulldogs. This is always a big event in our state. The University of Florida is quite close to where we live, so of course there are many Gator fans here.  However, unfortunately, the Bulldogs beat the Gators in this year's game.    My hubby watches all kinds of football...college and NFL.  I personally don't get all that excited about it and usually find something else to do during the games. Living in a home where I was outnumbered 4 to one (3 sons and 1 husband), I gave up long ago trying to watch anything else on the weekends.  But that's okay. They always had a good time watching the games together, and I had plenty of other stuff to keep me busy. I loved hearing them cheering for their favorite teams and making all the noise that guys make while watching football. Thankfully, our son Benton came over and watched a game with hubby on Sunday afternoon. It made my heart happy to hear them together. Even if their team didn't win.

I hope you've had a blessed and wonderful day today. Hard to believe tomorrow will be November already, and the beginning of another busy and happy month of giving thanks to God!

Here's some good closing thoughts for the day:

Oh, here's a bouquet of wildflowers I picked on our walk this afternoon...our first walk since hubby had his surgery almost a month ago!  It felt sooooo good to get out and take a nice walk in the woods!
Praise God!

Good night everyone!

Let's go see what others are writing about today at Tuesday 4!

  1. Howdy Pam, that bouquet of wildflowers is so pretty. I also like your ceramic pumpkin. the stew looks SO GOOD.....I'M ON MY WAY! ha ha LOL. Enjoyed all the fun pictures, especially the porch picture, that sure is a great one! I immediately spotted Lily Grace up on the porch! She looks real cute in her costume. So glad to hear John is feeling better! Good enough to go for a walk....THAT IS really good news! Well it was hot yesterday, but we started getting some really nice cool breezes here about dark. It sure felt good. And the temps are supposed to drop way down tonight. Hugs! PS.....I love hot "mater" soup too, especially with grilled cheese!!

    1. Come on down!!! We'll put on a pot of stew and sit and visit on the back porch while we watch the geese and the cranes and the bluebirds and all the others, and we'll play with our dollies! Yes, it is turning cooler here today also...but only for a couple of days and then it's back up a bit...but November usually is a lot nicer weather wise. Yay! Come on down!!!

  2. Thanks for joining in! Those kids in the puppy outfits look like real dogs!! hehehehe. I also love tomato soup and grilled cheese. Its a great meal. I didn't know Lily Grace has a dog or maybe I just forgot. She's a bit young to be taking him out by herself but I imagine you help her out with those kinds of things anyway. Good Night!! Sleep tight.

    1. I know, weren't they authentic looking costumes? LOL. Oh yes, Lily Grace got Bailey for her birthday a year ago I think. Bailey is such a good doggy...never makes any messes and doesn't bark too loud. She's good company for Lily and her friends. Happy November!!!

  3. Good morning Pam! I enjoyed hearing about your Halloween, seeing all of the delicious looking recipes, (I have never heard of applesauce on biscuits), and seeing Lily Grace and Bailey ready for trick or treating. Those wildflowers are gorgeous too. I went to Mandy's to pass out candy last night while she took Piper trick-or-treating for awhile. Brad is out of town for work. I didn't mind. I loved seeing all of the cute kids in their costumes. I just had to be very careful driving home so I didn't hit any munchkins out finding candy!
It's 23F outside right now! No wonderful my feet got cold in their flip-flops when I took Zoey outside! Brrrrr. I guess it's winter time in Nebraska. Dennis just left for physical therapy. His appt. is 7:15. It's his first visit. He hurt his leg in the fall in June and kept thinking it would get better, but it's just getting worse. Much worse. I sure hope they can fix it. Tomorrow is his thumb surgery. It sounds awful and I sure hope this time goes well and heals correctly.
Hope your Wednesday is a great one!
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  5. What a darling welcoming committee y'all make! So fun to see Lily Grace and Bailey once more. I never heard of putting warmed applesauce over biscuits before ... my Tom would so love that. Me, I'm going over to your link to the hobo stew; I don't know if I'm more drawn to that sweet black pot -- or its contents?
Well, we're off back to the VA again .... high hopes! Have a blessed day!

  6. Grilled cheese and tomato soup - classic favorites of mine, for sure, Pamela.
I'm a big GA fan, so I watched that game, too. Of course, my outcome was better, but I do think Florida has a strong, dynamic team this year. Good luck to them in the games to come!
    Blessings!

  7. What a sweet attitude you have about Halloween and trick or treating! I know you are a wonderful neighbor...and how sweet to embrace another way to love your neighbors well! And how nice it must be to treat or treat in Florida! It was (quite) chilly here last night!! I do not think I have ever had applesauce (homemade or otherwise) on biscuits...but I am intrigued!!:) Have a wonderful November!!:)

  9. Lily Grace looks fabulous as a rock star!! It looks like you and Rose had fun passing out candy with those ferocious watchdogs! I enjoyed your Tuesday 4, Pam, and your great photos. Grilled cheese and tomato soup was one of Joe's favorites, too! Hugs!

  10. Your photo of the fam, shows you all as such a friendly bunch! If I lived on your street, I'd drop by and help you give out candy. Looks like fun.
Its not that way here - times have changed. Back in when my boys were young, we had so much fun on Halloween and I think at times, we want to recreate it but the players have changed. Where there used to be cute little kids, we now have teens dressed up in morbid costumes. When I was growing up, it was considered "not cool" to dress up after 6th grade and trick or treat. Kids would call you a baby. Then when my boys were young, it was no dressing up or trick or treating in middle school. They did attend a school dance instead.
Last night we went out to get some take out - and I could feel the darkness...of course the world now seems to be shrouded in darkness and it gets worse every day.

I'm glad to day is the first day of November - one of my favorite months.
I've not ever heard of biscuits and applesauce. My husband would love it. I like regular biscuits and gravy though...my dad made sure I knew some of the old Tennessee cooking and all. The basics like using a cast iron skillet etc. I may be a Californian but there is a lot of old school Tennessee in me.
Those wild flowers are so pretty - so simplistic. As always I enjoyed your post.

  11. I agree with your thoughts on Halloween. I know many Christians who leave home on trick-or-treat night or lock everything up tight, draw the blinds and dim the lights, but a speaker came to our church years ago and gave the opinion that it was kind of "crazy" to do that because it was the one day a year that everyone in the neighborhood comes knocking on your door, giving you the chance to form relationships and touch lives...why in the world would you hide from it? That said, it poured here for trick-or-treat and we didn't see a single kid other than the grands.

    God bless always.

  14. I loved seeing Lily Grace all dressed up for trick or treat. One of my favorite foods on a cold/cool winter day is tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich, I have enjoyed it many times. AND that pot of stew, oh my, it looks so good, another staple at our house. The wild flowers are so pretty, isn't God good to provide us with so many pretty things to enjoy. It's so great that John was up for a walk, that is good news.

  15. Pam: Due to the fact that my hubby likes racing, football and basketball, we have two televisions. That way I can watch what I want to see. Hallowe'en is not what it used to be for us. I participated in a couple of "Trunk or Treats" but the changeable weather messed with my sinuses. When hubby bought lots of candy, we really had only a handful of children come to our door. Since our present pastor came, we have observed "All Saints Day". This year it will be this coming Sunday due to our Annual Conference being the end of last week. As always, I loved the pictures. Peace and blessings to you and yours.
