The Snowbirds Have Landed! And other Events...

Imagine my surprise the other morning as we heard a honking in the air, and all of a sudden these two lovely Canadian Geese dropped down from the skies and landed right on our "Still Waters Pond"!  These are our first official "snowbirds" arriving from the snowy, frigid north,  taking a little break here as they continue their flight south for the winter. (Or maybe they will decide this is good enough and stay?)

However, after a while they flew away again...perhaps to find a bigger pond on which to spend the winter. I do hope they will decide to come back as they were a lovely addition to our peaceful pond.

We were in the midst of some other projects when they arrived, and perhaps we didn't give them a warm enough welcome.

We recently had this dump truck load of dirt delivered, for the purpose of leveling out the gullies and "valleys" in our back yard where the erosion of rain run-off over the years left a very uneven back yard.  (Not sure if you can see gullies below, but they are there, trust me)

And so, on this particular morning, when the geese arrived, we also had a man on a tractor spreading this dirt all along the back yard, next to the pond. (I forgot to get a picture of him working on the tractor, so these pictures are the result of his work)

Hopefully, now that we have also added rain guttering and downspouts to our house, we won't have the same run-off problem that was here before. And we have scattered some winter rye-grass seed over the ground, with the hope that it will sprout soon and help hold the dirt in place until the other grass underneath can work its way back up through the dirt.  Thankfully we got a little rain last night to help the seeds get a start.  So we shall be watching this progress and hopefully we will see some grass sprouts soon!

Another project that I have been working on recently was finally completed in the past couple of days:

I mentioned in this previous post found HERE that I found something that I was going to be doing as a project, but I said that I would save that for another post so I can give it more time and space...

So here is what I found:

Yes, this is a very old, faded and rough looking cedar wardrobe, that needed some "love" very badly:

The inside really wasn't all that bad and just needed to be cleaned up. I didn't want to put any kind of finish over the cedar as that would take away its cedar fragrance.

But the outside needed to be sanded down to remove all the old varnish so that a new clear coat could be put back on to bring out it's natural cedar beauty.

So here I am, mask and all, sanding away on the door...

And later I did sand all the sides of the cabinet itself, but we forgot to take pictures...

Finally this week the job was completed, and hubby and I carefully moved the cabinet into the house all by ourselves, with the help of our trusty "dolly", up the steps, and into the guest room.
I know you are saying to yourself about now, "Why on earth did she want this big old piece of furniture for her guest room, when she keeps saying they are "downsizing" and had to give up so much stuff, blah,  blah, blah..."    Well, you are right to question my sanity, but hear me out...

The last room to be set up and finished in our new house is the Guest Room. Why? Well, because we just had too much stuff sitting there in boxes that needed to have a place to be properly stored...mostly boxes full of pictures...you know...photo albums and boxes of photos that were never put into albums, but are organized into smaller tubs by years...and photos cannot be stored in the shed or an attic (which we do not have) because of the extreme temperatures. And after 50 years of marriage and 3 kids, you can imagine that we have lots and lots of pictures.  Add to that  family photos in frames that used to hang on walls in my parents' home and my inlaw's home, that came back to us after they passed on... and anyway, long story short, this cabinet has become the storage cabinet to house our photos:

We installed shelves, and purchased plastic tubs that would fit on the shelves to hold the photos. I still have all the pictures in frames that need to be gone through. I think I will be taking most of them out of their frames and putting them in manila envelopes (or clear plastic sleeves) and then storing them in the tubs...or do you have any better ideas? I'm still thinking that through.

I must say that a large part of my day was spent actually looking through old pictures that I hadn't seen in quite a while...lost in the happy memories.  Having the photos in this cabinet I hope will make it easier to pull out an album or a tub of photos and enjoy them again. I may write more about that at another time. I certainly saw some old photos that could make for an interesting post someday...

So now that this job is pretty much complete, I can begin to concentrate on getting the rest of the Guest Room in order.  I hope to have this done by Thanksgiving...at least that is my goal. We aren't planning on having any overnight guests that I know of, but then again, you never know! Someone may be too full of turkey to feel like driving back home and they may need a place to stay! That would be just fine with me! That gives me the incentive to keep working on this project until it is complete!!

Okay, that's it for today! Now I am off to our church ladies' UMW meeting.  Always wonderful to fellowship with other women, and encourage one another by sharing the love of Christ together.  So thankful for this church and these precious souls.

Have a blessed day my friends!! I'll catch up with you all later!!!

  1. Oh, the Canadian Geese must have been a wonderful sigh, something you can look forward to every year. Are they still there? Just wondering how long you'll be able to enjoy their beauty. Talk about beauty, that wardrobe is a BEAUTY. I love old pieces, they add so much charm, or some say character, to a home.

    1. I haven't seen the geese except that one day. Maybe they will come back, but there are so many lakes around here they may have found a larger "pond" to swim in. But there may be others to enjoy here. Thank you for liking my "wardrobe". It was fun to redo, and I am happy that it holds the photos as planned. Now, to get the rest of that room in order...that is my next challenge! Thank you for visiting today. Blessings...

  2. I love those beautiful geese too...I do ope they will return. And that gorgeous cabinet...how lovely it is and you did a fantastic job on the restoration! It sure makes a great place to keep all those photos stored...I have many plastic bins with photos to and wonder what to do with them all...some are in albums but many others are not. I'm sure your guest room will be just as cozy as the rest of your lovely home! Enjoy the rest of your week, Pam!

    1. Thank you, Debby. We love our photos, but they do take up so much space. Actually, the last 10 years of photos I have hardly printed. They are stored in my computer and on flash drives. I just pray the technology doesn't change so that the flash drives can't be read...that is my concern. But I sure don't want to pay the price to print all those photos! I'd need another cabinet! LOL. Thank you for your kind thoughts. I am praying for you as you await the beginning of your new home. I saw where you said it might be March. Praying you don't get 'cabin fever' in the meantime! Stay warm and cozy in your lovely RV. Blessings.

    1. Well, quite a few of those other "snowbirds" have arrived as well, but at least they aren't in my pond! LOL. Thank you for liking the cedar chest! I am quite pleased with it, especially as it is helping me to feel more organized finally!!! yay!

  4. That cedar chest looks wonderful after your magic. IT is the perfect place for family photos of which I can say I have tons. I love Canadian geese. I hope they do come back so that you can enjoy them over the winter.

    1. Thank you, Sandy. I am very pleased with the result of the cabinet, and feel so smart to be so organized! Now on to get the rest of the room in order! I am also hoping the geese come back. It would be fun to watch them gliding around our pond. We shall see! Perhaps some other winter visitors will drop down from the skies. It will make life interesting! have a blessed day!

  5. Oh, my, Pamela, that cedar chest is gorgeous! Kudos to you for doing such a marvelous job of "sprucing" it up. (Couldn't resist a pun!) And maybe, the Canadian geese will come back, or others will visit. It is that time of the year when they head south.
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you, Martha. I was just "pining" away for some way to store my photos! The "spruced up" Cedar cabinet is helping to preserve our family "tree" for future generations to view! Ha Ha.You started it. I do hope the geese will come back. I am hoping our little pond will be a good little respite for weary winter travelers! Thanks for stopping in for a visit!! You made me smile!

  6. BIG doin's at your house lately! I hope the back yard project works. It looks like it should.

Like you, I have removed MANY photos from picture frames and put them into manilla envelopes. While it's nice to have them framed, that takes up a lot of space. I've labeled my manilla envelopes so I can easily get to whatever picture I may be looking for.

Your "new" storage cabinet is perfect for keeping track of the photo memories!

    1. Oh, thank you for confirming that my idea of the manila envelopes is a good one. If you do it, then it must be good! :) Yes, we have been busy, and still working on that guest room. The cabinet has been a big help. And yes, we do hope the back yard project works. It will be nice to walk on more level ground back there!

  7. Your cedar cupboard is lovely! Good job!! And using it as you are sound perfect!! Leveling the backyard and planting seed is another great project! Maybe the geese will come back once they realize it is quiet again! Keep us posted!

    1. Thank you, Terri. I do hope the geese will come back. John just heard them a few minutes ago, but I ran outside and did not see or hear any sign of them. I think they kept going over to the big lake not far from here. Our little pond just wasn't exciting enough for them I guess! Hey, don't you have relatives here in Interlachen? Perhaps you need to come visit them and us again some day!! Would love to have you and Joe! Let us know!

  8. I like what you've done with the back yard so far. The ground looks very even and when the grass grows it will be so lovely. The cedar chest is beautiful. I do love wooden things and you've restored it so beautifully. I can empathize with the many years of photos. Not only do I have my own but I also have my mother's and my sisters. That will be the last thing I organize hopefully in the next year or two. When I do I will discard a lot of them because I only need a few choice ones for myself. I need to eliminate a lot of digital ones too.

    1. I hear you about trying to discard photos. Right now I am organizing loose photos into separate containers for each of our sons, things that pertain to each of them. One of our sons has already passed on, but his "tub of photos" will go to his son one day, along with all the pictures of him (our grandson). Digital photos...for the past 10 years I have not printed many photos and they are stored in my computer and on flash drives. That may be a problem when technology changes and these flash drives no longer work...so I am thinking about what to do without it costing me a lot of money. That will be another challenge for the future. Than you for your comments, and also for discovering my banana bread recipe! I do hope you will try it and like it. Have a blessed day!

  9. Pam: I LOVE your cedar cabinet. My hubby prefers the true wood over the stuff that a lot of present-day furniture is made from. The geese are beautiful. We have some in certain parts of town. Our large city park to the west of us and an apartment complex out by out church. They cross over the road and inhabit our church property. There is a down side to having them on the church's property. They leave their "messes." We have had 4.5 inches of snow earlier this week.

    1. Wow! 4.5 inches of snow already! I know you are probably having mixed feelings about that...the first snow is always pretty, but then it just stays and stays and more comes along and it stays and stays...along with the cold frigid weather and ice...that is why we are in Florida...but I understand not everyone can leave their homes and move to Florida like these "snowbirds" did. Speaking of which, I do know about the "messes" the geese can leave...we had a lot of them when we lived in Ohio, and you really had to watch where you walked! So far these geese have not been back to our pond. We heard them fly over this morning, but I think they are going to a much larger lake nearby. But it was fun to see them, and they may come back sometime. I'm glad you like the cedar cabinet. I am enjoying it as I put the pictures away...and I can easily pull the pictures back out to look at them as I wish. That is something I've wanted for a long time. Now I've got to concentrate on getting the rest of the guest room in order. Maybe if I knew you were coming I'd get busy on it! :) Have a blessed day, and try to stay warm and safe!! And throw a snowball for me!
