Hymn for the Day - A Song for Lent

Good Morning!  As we continue along in our journey through the Lenten season in preparation for the remembrance of Christ's ultimate sacrifice on the cross on our behalf, I would like to revisit this post from many years ago.  Praying that it will be a blessing to you today as well...

Original Post 3/11/2011:

I love to sing the old hymns of the faith...and I want to keep them alive for future generations.  This morning in my devotional time with my husband, we focused on this old hymn as a prayer:

"Out of my bondage, sorrow, and night,
Jesus, I come, Jesus I come;
Into Thy freedom, gladness, and light,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of my sickness into Thy health,
Out of my want and into Thy wealth,
Out of my sin and into Thyself,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of my shameful failure and loss,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the glorious gain of Thy cross,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of earth's sorrows into Thy balm,
Out of life's storms and into Thy calm,
Out of distress to jubilant psalm,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of unrest and arrogant pride,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into Thy blessed will to abide,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of myself to dwell in Thy love,
Out of despair into raptures above,
Upward for aye on wings like a dove,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of the fear and dread of the tomb,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the joy and light of my home,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of the depths of ruin untold,
Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold,
Ever Thy glorious face to behold,
Jesus, I come to Thee."

Written by William T. Sleeper, 1819-1904

Wow! Doesn't that hymn speak to you?  This is one of those songs that we often would sing as a prayer of commitment and surrender at the close of a church service.  Even though these words were penned by the composer over one hundred years ago, they are still applicable and powerful to me today.

During this Lenten Season, rather than focus on what you are giving up, why not consider what new insights you can glean from God's Word, the faithful messages found in the hymns of our faith, and other devotional writings as God leads you.  Then, share those thoughts with others throughout your day...whether by email, Facebook, notes written in cards, or by word of mouth in your conversations with friends and loved ones. If we could manage to share a word of encouragement and hope with another person each day, what a difference there would be in our world!

Have a glorious day...and give someone a real hug today.  God bless you real good! (((((HUGS)))))

3/10/2019:  Note to my friends:  I discovered some very unpleasant comments on a few of my recent blogs this morning (spam), so am now using comment moderation.  I will try to get back to each comment as soon as possible. I apologize if anyone happened to see any of those spam messages before I was able to delete them.  Hopefully this will help. I notice that many others of our friends are also having to use comment moderation.     Have a blessed day my friends, and I will catch up with you later as I must get ready for  Sunday School and Church now.

  1. This is so inspirational and beautiful today, Pamela. So sorry, though, that you are having problems with those spam comments. It has happened to me before, too. I simply delete them, but changing to moderating comments is a great move on your part.
    May you have a most blessed Sunday!

    1. Sorry I am just now getting around to reading these comments...we've been gone all day. I will have to get used to checking the comments waiting for moderation often...I usually in the past have just deleted them too, but today the spam was very bad and on several older blog posts as well as the current one, so I felt I had to do something. It was a very nasty comment and I didn't want anyone else to see it! Hope your day has been blessed. Mine has, but just a busy Sunday doing wonderful things!!

  2. The message in that hymn is still relevant and so important! Thanks for sharing it. New to me!

    Out of earth's sorrows into Thy balm,
    Out of life's storms and into Thy calm,
    Out of distress to jubilant psalm,
    Jesus, I come to Thee.

    1. Thank you, Terri. It is new to many, I think. It is an old hymn, just not as well known. Our church pianist saw this today and wants to have the choir sing it for communion the next time! Hope you have had a blessed day.

  3. We sang this often when I was growing up, but I haven't heard it in years. It's a beautiful hymn with a wonderful message.

  5. Pam, thank you for sharing these beautiful thoughts. This year for Lent, I simply want to stay the course--run the race well, keeping my eyes focused on the finish line--on the Lord. And in so doing, I need to release the things (literal and metaphorical) that are weighing me down and holding me back.

    Blessings!

    1. So proud of the accomplishments you have made in the past year in particular, Kim. I know that you believe in the verse "I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me" Philippians 4:13...and He is there with you all the way to the finish line! He will not fail you nor let you down. God bless you my friend.

  6. I miss singing the old hymns and I love to hear them. I'm so sorry that you got those comments...it has happened to me several times through the years and I have been tempted to do the comment moderation thing. Enjoy your week!

    1. Thank you, Debby. We are blessed at our little church to sing both many old favorite hymns as well as some beautiful newer songs, but it seems we all love the old hymns the best. So much depth of message there. I have turned the comment moderation back off because I am just too slow getting around to checking the messages to publish them. I will just keep a close eye on it and see if that old spammer comes back. I hope I scared him away! Have a blessed day today. Thinking of you and praying.

  7. "Out of my bondage, sorrow, and night,
    Jesus, I come, Jesus I come;
    Into Thy freedom, gladness, and light,
    Jesus, I come to Thee;"

    This is the most beautiful picture of God's acceptance of who I was. Thank you for sharing this with us.

    1. Thank you, Cecelia. Isn't it exactly that? So wonderful the love our Savior has for us, His precious children. He takes us just as we are, and restores and saves us for His Kingdom. We are so truly blessed.
