Thanksgiving Eve and Tuesday 4

Pre-Thanksgiving eve...last night to be exact, we were headed into town to go to the Community Thanksgiving Service at our church.  I told my hubby that the sky had a "pumpkin glow" to it.  I guess I had pumpkins on my mind...or maybe pumpkin pie...

Anyway, we enjoyed the community service very much. Our Pastor gave the sermon, and others from the different community churches shared in the different parts of the service.  It was very nice. We enjoyed singing some of the old familiar Thanksgiving hymns,
"Come Ye Thankful People, Come", "We Gather Together", and "Count Your Blessings".
It was a wonderful way to prepare our hearts for these days of Thanksgiving.

I thought this flower arrangement was lovely...

This morning hubby and I took our usual walk in the woods, and God's creation displayed its own kind of autumn bouquet:

These leaves are from the common "Turkey Oak" tree, found here in these woods.

It's not a particularly pretty tree, and really the leaves only look this interesting because the early morning sun was shining through them, lighting them up and showing off their autumn colors.

Who says we don't get autumn leaves in Florida?

Here are some other interesting colorful leaves, I think on some immature wild persimmon trees.

I believe I've told you about them before HERE.

Even common ordinary kind of trees can be beautiful when clothed in God's heavenly light.

Yesterday morning I had to go have lab work first thing in the morning, and then we went out to breakfast at one of the local restaurants in Palatka.

Always a blessing to sit across the table from this smiling face.

Maybe he was smiling because he was looking at the bush of hair on top of my head.  I have been without a haircut in a while, and it just seemed to be growing up higher and higher. Thankfully today I was able to get it cut, but no pictures yet. Maybe tomorrow.

I missed doing the Tuesday 4 Meme yesterday, but I think I will be answering the questions here:

Welcome to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4...

Thanksgiving is the subject.

1. What are you most thankful for this year?
I have to say my health and my family's health, and all the blessings God has provided for us this past year. Our kids have a wonderful "new" business, (Dixie Cottage), I am healing from my surgery slowly but surely, we have had a very good year in every way and I am so very thankful.

2.Company or just immediate family?  See my answers in the paragraph below...

3 Cooking or catering? Home or eating out?  "  " " "

4. What's for dessert?                                       " " " "

Here's the answers to the questions above:  So today I've been busy getting things ready for tomorrow. Even though we are just having our immediate family of five here at our house for dinner, there must be pumpkin pies. My sweet DIL is bringing an apple  pie too, along with the turkey and green beans. In addition to the pumpkin pies I am making the sweet potato casserole, stuffing, and jello. Oh, and Scott picked up some rolls. We should have more than enough food to fill us up and make us full to the brim with thankfulness.

What's on the menu at your house?

Oh, BTW, the "Kids Table" is already set and ready for Lily Grace and her friends.

Tonight for our Thanksgiving eve dinner we had beef burritos with black beans.

Scott was a little late getting home for supper, so he created his own spin on the burrito, using tortilla chips, some fried potato, the beef, cheese and sour cream. I think I like his concoction better, but it was too late. I was already full with my own burrito.  For some reason his food always looks better to me.

To top off this day and end it on an even more beautiful note, this was tonight's sunset:

I love how it keeps changing every few minutes...God's creative masterpieces never run out...

Even when it is practically just in black and white, it is still magnificent!!

"Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good,
For His steadfast love endures forever."
Psalm 107:1

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Remembering Mama ~ or "A Kiss from Heaven" Updated from 2013

5/10/2014   5/7/2015: 5/7/2017  5/7/2018

NOTE: I originally wrote this on May 7, 2013.  I can honestly say I still feel this every time I put on that sweater.  No wonder I find myself wearing it often.  Read on....

May 7, 2013:
Do you ever long to just be close again to someone you loved so much...? I know I do.  My Mama left this world for a far better place seven years ago today. (2018 = 12 years ago today!) I still have to pinch myself when I realize that it has been that long already...and yet she still seems so near.  Only those who have experienced this understand what I mean.

This picture taken in 1987 at age 70

As you can see by the picture above and these others, my Mama was a beautiful woman...even at such a great age as 87, as seen in this picture below, which was taken on her 87th birthday.  That's me on the left, and my sister Doris on the right. You can tell we are all related by the cheekbones, right? Yeah, that's the Tedlie claim to fame...we get our cheekbones from our Mama, and her Mama, Flora Sheets Tedlie.
She was  beautiful too.  But this is about my Mama.

My Mama loved so many pretty things...like the beautiful dolls she collected, the African Violets she somehow managed to keep growing when mine just all withered away. She loved lilacs, but sadly couldn't grow them in Florida, and oh, how she missed them!
(See "Flowers for Mama", originally written in 2010, and updated each year)

Me, Remembering Mama tonight  (2013) (notice the sweater)

Recently one cool spring morning  I was looking for something to put on my arms to take off the chill as I drove to work...and something that I could wear in my office when the air conditioning gets a bit too cold in my part of the building...and others are too warm in their section.  As I skimmed through the clothes hanging in my closet, I discovered something I had almost forgotten that I had...my Mama's sweater.  You know how "older ladies" always keep a sweater handy just in case they get chilled? (yeah...I'm learning about that...)...well, we used to tease my mother that she wouldn't go anywhere without her sweater, even in the heat of summer.  She always kept one in the car in case it got too chilly in a store or restaurant or church. Even though I still frequently tend to have those horrid "hot flashes", I can just as quickly have a "cold flash"...so I need something that is easy to put on and take off in a hurry...(you ladies know what I mean, don't you?)...alas...a sweater!

Anyway, on this particular morning I grabbed that sweater off the hanger and quickly put it on as I was running late to get to work. (What else is new?)  As I settled into the driver's seat in the car, adjusting the defroster, the radio, and my seat, I suddenly had this wonderful feeling of warmth...a soft comforting warmth enveloped my body...and my heart. My Mama's sweater wrapped around me and caressed me with her love. I felt it. It was almost as if Mama was right there in my sweater with me, holding me close, cradling me in her arms so tenderly once again. I felt it. I knew it. I was overwhelmed with the sense of her presence. It was a tender, loving, embrace straight from heaven. Yeah, I know it was just her sweater...but it was more than that. It was a tangible part of my memories of her...and it gave me tremendous comfort. I found myself wanting to talk with her again and just tell her how much I loved her...and I thanked her for touching me with her "presence" once again.  I also thanked the Lord for allowing me that little "kiss" from heaven. He knew that I needed it in more ways than one at that particular moment.  Essentially, it was a gift from God, sent especially to me...a reminder of His divine Presence in my life.

I hope you won't misunderstand these thoughts and think I'm some kind of kook.  I really don't care if you do think that. (probably won't be the first time...or the last!)   This is what happened, and it brought such peace and joy to my heart. God knows what we need and He can choose to bless us any way He wants.

Perhaps you have had such "kisses from heaven" as well. My thought is that when something like this happens...

"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever!"  Psalm 107:1 (NIV)

Friday Foto Friends-Reflections of a "Happy Camper"

Well folks, today is "Friday Foto Friends" again...and this week has flown by without any significant photos that I can recall, so I will go back through my camera and see what pictures I've taken recently that you haven't already seen here.  Some of you who are my Facebook friends may have already seen some of these, but maybe not.  It's been a rather busy week in some ways...and a rather lazy week in other ways.  So here goes...they may not be cohesive or have any running "theme" that I know of yet...Let's see what happens, okay?

This lovely Great Egret was enjoying her own reflection in the pond early one morning...actually she was fishing for her breakfast...I doubt she even noticed her reflection...but I did!

This beautiful male cardinal was sitting in a tree in the Secret Garden, singing merrily away one evening! I believe he was giving thanks to the Lord for his lovely home here in the woods...

And this frisky squirrel has been enjoying the fountain in the Memorial Garden...seems to think this is his own private water fountain...

He also loves to run along the top of our new fence...It is amazing how agile and adept he is at running on that skinny "balance beam"...

The knockout roses are beginning to "knock themselves out" with blossoms again...

What's left of our confederate jasmine is blooming, alongside the Louis Philippe roses along the fence...

This young baby bear stopped by for an early drink one morning

And this bigger bear stopped by later for a bath in the pool! That is one tough plastic pool...and this bear is saying "I dare anyone to try and make me get out of this pool!"

Just gotta finish washing my paws before I leave....

AND THIS is what happens when new neighbors from out of state leave their garbage cans/bags outside overnight...we end up with their garbage in our yard and road and woods...thanks to our friendly neighborhood bears who were just looking for a midnight snack....
And now I am happy to say that our neighbors did clean up the mess in the woods promptly this morning, and so now I am a "happy camper!"

This is my new TERVIS replacement "tumbler"...Did you know that if you purchase a TERVIS tumbler (any size), that they have a lifetime warranty?  If it cracks or starts to show condensation on the outside, or any other issue, they will replace it free of charge?  You just have to mail them the damaged cup, and complete the form online to go along with it, and they will give you a coupon to replace it with a new one free, including shipping!  So, I just got this "Happy Camper" tumbler to replace a pink flamingo one that had cracked...and this just suits my style so much better these days!

Even though I don't really go camping, I feel like I live in a perpetual state of camping here in the woods, with the bears and the trees and the campfires and marshmallows...and see the camera in the first picture?  That would be me!! Taking pictures everywhere I go...
And as long as I can do that....I'm a "Happy Camper"!!

So, to end this story on a positive note...today I am thankful to live in the wild forest, even though the bears do sometimes make a mess (still not their fault), and they even like to take a bath in my front yard pool, and the neighbors are friendly and willing to take care of issues that happen... and the birds are free to fly and sing (and fish for their breakfast) and the squirrels are free to frolic about...and the flowers grow and blossom in spite of the drought (as long as I water them...)  and God is in His heaven, and all is right with the world, at least in my little part of the world...

"Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever!"
Psalm 107:1

Now please go back and check out what other Friday Foto Friends are posting over here...

Thanksgiving, Role Reversal and "The Golden Rule" -Updated 11/25/15

This was originally written last year on the day before Thanksgiving, 11/26/14.  Here we are again, one year later, on the day before Thanksgiving...and not a whole lot has changed...We still have my mother in law with us primarily on the weekends, but this week, due to some health issues that my brother in law is experiencing, we have had her all week long. The other major change is that I just retired this past Friday, so now I am adjusting to being home all day...and she has been here as well...and it has had its challenges...but on the whole, I must say I am very thankful for the fact that she is still in pretty good physical shape for her age of 92...and that God is helping us to cope with the issues that come up due to her progressive dementia.  Sometimes you just have to find ways to laugh and be silly together...like playing with a baby doll,,,

Sometimes even my hubby gets in on the fun with the baby doll!

Or baking cookies together...(I bake, she watches and counts the cookies as they come out of the oven and tries to keep track of how many we've eaten before they even cooled down...a very good mental exercise for her...and she does surprisingly well all things considered)

Or having a tea party with a friend...

And sometimes it's fun to pat a baby's "bear" butt...and just enjoy the feel of something warm and snuggly...even if it IS a babydoll!  It brought a smile to her face...and that's worth everything...

So here's the original post from last year...it was good for me to review this again after a particularly exasperating day.  I needed to remind myself that "Love Never Fails".

November 26, 2014:

It's the day before Thanksgiving...and there's a lot going on in my mind and heart right now. But for today, this is probably the uppermost thought, and even though it seems to be a bit of a repetitive theme for me lately...this is what's happening now.  I may elaborate on other things after we get through cooking and eating and enjoying Thanksgiving with loved ones and friends sometime later this weekend...

I just finished reading an excellent book on a subject that I've been thinking about quite a bit lately...
When Your Parent Becomes Your Child, A Journey of Faith Through My Mother's Dementia    by Ken Abraham.  One of my other blogging friends had mentioned this book and I thought.."I need to read that one right now!"  So I ordered it...actually ordered two copies...one for my family and one for my brother-in-law and his family.  Why? Because we are living it right now in our family as we are joint care-givers for my 91 year old mother-in-law...who is rapidly descending the slippery slope from being mentally present with us to drifting further and further away in a cloud of confusion, memory lapses, paranoia, anger and fear.

When I first picked up this book and started reading I was astounded. I thought Mr. Abraham was writing about my mother in law.  The similarities were amazingly much too close for comfort.  "Minnie" Abraham, Ken Abraham's mother, exhibited so many of the same symptoms that they could have been "sisters in crime"...the crime of changing into a totally different person through the sad progression of the deterioration of the mind.

This post is not intended to be a book review, however, if you are dealing with these kinds of changes in your loved one, I would heartily recommend that you read this book as well as any other information you can put your hands on.  There is a wealth of knowledge on this subject shared on the internet and I am certain many other books are available.  I appreciated Mr. Abraham's story because it was a deeply personal and honest confession of his own frustration and inadequacies in dealing with the changes he saw taking place in his mother.  However, he gave a lot of helpful information that he learned through first hand experience, which I have found especially enlightening.

I think the main thing that I am learning as we share the responsibility of caring for our loved one with my husband's brother and his family is that we have to communicate regularly with each other. There are changes taking place weekly and even daily that we need to be aware of.  Right now she is still able to be driven back and forth between our two homes on the weekends so that hopefully neither of us will  suffer caregiver burnout too quickly. But we are also realizing that this may not last much longer. As her condition continues to deteriorate we may have to enlist professional/long term assistance in one form or another.

For now we are taking things one day at a time and trying to make every moment count.    As long as she is physically able to do things in the home, we encourage her to take part in the family activities as much as possible.  Spending quality time together, cleaning up the kitchen after meals, folding laundry, setting the table...who cares if the towels and underwear aren't folded the way I always fold them?  What difference does it make in the grand scheme of things if she puts the knife, fork and spoon on the wrong side of the plate, or doesn't remember which drawer holds the silverware and which cupboard holds the plates...or if she gets confused about whether we just ate lunch or supper...she loves to feel useful as she is still contributing something to the family by her presence with us.

And truly she is.  I love to hear her humming a little song as she helps dry the dishes or as she sits in the rocking chair and chats with me while I prepare our meals. They say that music is one of the last "senses" to go from the mind...and I believe that to be true.  My mother in law still loves to listen to her favorite gospel music CD's every day and she can sing along like she is right there with them.
"Nanny" helping our son with the dishes and enjoying spending happy moments
with her #1 Grandson.  He appreciates the blessing of sharing this time with her as well.
We try hard to see the humor in some of the things that she says or does, even if it is sad that she doesn't realize what is happening to her.  However, some things aren't so funny, especially when she gets angry over the least little thing that doesn't go her way...or when she tries to cut short our visits with friends because she thinks it is time for them to go and she's tired of not being the center of attention. Or when she repeats the same things over and over and over again all day long, and to her it is like she just thought of it that very moment...but we've already had to endure the story/comments/questions too many times to count.

Patience is a virtue that sometimes wears thin. It is difficult for those closest to her to understand that our loved one really doesn't know that she's saying these things over and over again...or that her temper tantrums, negative comments about other family members and delusions are not really the product of a ninety-one year old mature Christian woman...but are the manifestations of a mind/brain that is rapidly breaking down, shriveling up, wearing out...dying.

So every day is a challenge in this journey we are traveling. As we approach Thanksgiving this week, I try to count my blessings and not dwell on the difficulties of life.  I know that someday it will be my turn to be the one that needs care...and I pray that there will be someone willing and able to go the extra mile for me as long as deemed reasonable and possible.  I try to practice "The Golden Rule"..."do unto others as you would have them do unto you..."...not expecting my mother in law to be able "do unto me" any longer...she has already done her part in loving and caring for me and my family all these years.  It is our turn to return the blessing to her...and perhaps this experience will also help the younger generation realize what their part will be in the future.

Some thoughts from the "Love" chapter of the Bible, I Corinthians 13:1-8

"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels,
but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a
clanging cymbal.

And though I have the gift of prophecy,
and understand all mysteries and all knowledge,
and though I have all faith,
so that I could remove mountains,
but have not love,
I am nothing.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor,
and though I give my body to be burned,
but have not love,
it profits me nothing.

LOVE SUFFERS LONG AND IS KIND,
LOVE DOES NOT ENVY;
LOVE DOES NOT PARADE ITSELF,
IS NOT PUFFED UP;
DOES NOT BEHAVE RUDELY,
DOES NOT SEEK ITS OWN,
IS NOT PROVOKED,
THINKS NO EVIL;
DOES NOT REJOICE IN INIQUITY,
BUT REJOICES IN THE TRUTH;

BEARS ALL THINGS,
BELIEVES ALL THINGS,
HOPES ALL THINGS,
ENDURES ALL THINGS.

LOVE NEVER FAILS."

There really isn't anything more I can add to  that...
Hug and hold your loved ones closely this Thanksgiving.  We never know when it will be the last opportunity we will have to show them how much we love them.

"Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever!"
Psalm 107:1
