Things to Ponder


Welcome back to another of Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 memes.

"Across much of the USA autumn has come early.
It's so nice and chilly here that I made myself a nice cup of pumpkin spice coffee today, an autumn treat I really enjoy, While I enjoyed my cuppa I was pondering a rew things I want to do with my home."

Here are some questions for you to ponder:


1. If you could live in the world of any movie, which one would you choose and why?
I had to "ponder" this for a minute or two...and finally decided upon "Anne of Green Gables". Why? Well, because I loved her story, and as many of you probably already know from previous posts, Anne was one of my mother's favorite characters, and when I was born and my mother saw that I had red hair, she wanted to name me after Anne. So my name became Pamela Anne, with an e!   I still hope to actually visit Prince Edward Island someday and see all the places where the story came from, even though Anne is a fictional character, her story took place there where the author, Lucy M. Montgomery lived.  

2. If you could have coffee or tea with a woman from history or from fiction come to life, who would that be and why?
Oh goodness, I'm having to "ponder" that thought as well! There are so many wonderful women in history...I think of Queen Esther from the Bible book of Esther, I think of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and even Mary Magdalene, who was the first one to actually see the Risen Christ, but on a more personal note, I think I would love to meet and visit with my Great Grandmother Alberta "Birdie" Sowers Milsom. She was my paternal grandmother's (Elva Sowers Hill Mursch) birth mother, but she gave up my grandmother for adoption when she was just 5 months old.  My grandmother never knew her birth mother or birth father, but through Ancestry.com and my personal DNA studies, I have discovered who she was, but I've never been able to find a picture of her.  I would love to meet both her and my great grandfather, William Frederick Milsom.  I've written their story HERE, "Elva's Story, a Story of Sacrifice and Love", at least the story that I was able to figure out based on the genealogy documentation. I would love to find out just how close I was to the real reasons why she felt she had to give up my grandmother for adoption.  Hopefully my grandmother has already met her birth parents in heaven and she now knows the whole story.

3. If you could create an autumn-themed festival, what unique events or foods would it feature?

You've probably already seen these photos from the past...Click HERE for the story for these pictures

Way back when we were young and full of energy, we often had some kind of fall party or festival at our churches.  Since churches didn't really celebrate "Halloween" per se', we still wanted to have some kind of fun activities for the children and families.  So these pictures are from what we called a "Hobo Party", where people dressed up like Hobos and we played fun games like bobbing for apples and other similar fun activities.  We've also had a fall festival with different kinds of "booths", kind of like a little carnival, with outdoor games, ring toss, dunk the youth pastor in a tank of water, or a fish pond where children could "fish" for prizes...all kinds of fun things.  

There may have been a cake walk where the winner gets the prize cake.  Children may wear costumes, but preferably the non scary or gruesome type. One time the kids had to dress like their favorite Bible Character and we had to guess which one they were.  I know a lot of churches nowadays may have a "Trunk or Treat" kind of activity, where cars open up their trunks full of treats for the kids to come and get candy in a safe environment, where there will also be games and other food.

This picture below was way back when I was an almost teenager. My girlfriends came to my house for a Halloween party, and we dressed up like "Beatniks" (who remembers those?) and we played games and just had a lot of fun being silly. I'm the one on the right with the nylon stocking on my head and the Bongo drum.

If I were to try something like this today, first of all, I'd have my head examined. Second of all, I'd enlist as many younger people as I could to help.  We'd have apples, Hot apple cider, apple cider donuts, pumpkin spice muffins or cake or pies, maybe a pumpkin carving contest. If we could do this outside where there is a fire pit, we could roast hot dogs and also make s'mores. There would be baked beans and probably coleslaw available, and chips or whatever people want to bring to make it a fun time.

4, If autumn had a personality, how would you describe it, and what kind of friend would it be?

These questions today are sure making me have to think! I guess that's what "ponder" means! LOL.  

If Autumn had a personality, it would be warm and cozy with just the right amount of spice and welcoming fragrances of baking apple pie, filled with cinnamon and nutmeg and maybe just a hint of mace.  Mulled Apple Cider simmering in a pot on the stove, and perhaps even a pumpkin pie baking as well.  Her outside air would be crisp and fresh, with just a hint of smoke from a wood fireplace or bonfire or the burning of autumn leaves wafting in the breeze. Autumn would cover me with a comfy flannel shirt or sweater, blue jeans and hiking boots, and together we would walk through the woods and watch the falling leaves as they crunch underneath our feet along the trail.  My friend Autumn would make me feel revived, refreshed, and renewed, after a long hot, muggy summer that was filled with health issues and hibernation from the heat.  Autumn always makes me want to get outside and enjoy the beauty of the her glorious colors before they disappear and fade into winter.  She gives me energy that I'd long forgotten I could still find.

In the rural areas of the country, Autumn is a time of harvest. The crops are all gathered into the barns and stored away, so that the animals and people may have plenty of grain for the coming winter months. In the Bible, Jesus talks about the harvest time from a spiritual sense.  Many seeds have been planted in the hearts and lives of the people. There is a harvest time coming, when Christ will return to redeem all those souls who have had His Word of truth and life planted in them.  Like good farmers, Christ is depending on those of us who have already believed and received His Word  to be busy in the fields, sharing His love and planting more seeds among those who may not have heard the truth yet.  And, just as the farmer plants, nurtures and tends his crops and gathers them in during the harvest time, we should be helping to nurture those who are still tender plants in need of care, and helping to encourage them to full growth and maturity so that they will be ready for the harvest time that is coming.

Matthew 9:37-38 NKJV

37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 

38 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

If Autumn were a friend and personality, she would be an encourager and helper in the time of harvest, both in the physical and the spiritual sense.  This life is short...and for many of us we are in the autumn of our lives...and we need to be ready for winter and the true harvest that is yet to come.

By the way, that reminds me that we've been getting some nice rain the past few days, and more on the way! Praise God!  Still Waters Pond is soaking it up like a sponge! Hopefully there will soon be enough to make her overflow with gladness!!

Monday Monday

Oh my goodness! Here it is the third of October already and I haven't posted my October calendar pictures yet!  It's been a busy start to this month, which you already know from my last post on October 1st.  And thank you all for your lovely comments on the tea party event pictures. It truly was a lot of fun and a day that I know I will remember for a long time. Now what to do with that lovely hat? I doubt it will be worn ever again...but it was such fun for a day! I may hang it on the front door in springtime...that's a thought.  Anyway...moving right along...and in keeping with the "tea theme" for a moment or two, here is the picture from my Tea Pot Calendar for this month:

Perhaps we could have our woodsy tea party in this rustic cabin in the woods along the shore of a rocky stream (or here on my Still Waters Pond would be nice too)

My Thomas Kindade calendar always has wonderful Bible verses for each month to ponder...

Perhaps that is what this young lady is doing here in my Country Seasons Calendar by John Sloane:

The title is "In the Moment"...and she is pondering some sweet thoughts...perhaps even thoughts of love.

Oh such a beautiful scene! Wouldn't you love to step back in time and sit there with her in that carriage? I know I would. I could even wear my hat! LOL.

Speaking of "sisters" (see the little tiny book in the picture above? My sister gave me that years ago and those pictures beside it are of me with my sister and my mother, many years ago)...I don't know if I showed you the other sweet little gifts I received on my birthday from my sister and my sister in law:

The two fall dish towels are from my sister, and the "Grateful" pumpkin is from my sister in law. They were both thinking about how much I love decorating for autumn and I appreciate these thoughtful gifts!

Also, I don't think I showed you the sweet gifts from my son and daughter in love Rose...

This sweet tea cup is actually made to sit on a little pole in my garden. It should be used as a little bird feeder, but after my experience with the squirrel on my other pretty bird feeder I have decided it will not hold any bird seeds, but just look pretty in the garden.  I will post a picture once I get it set up. We have taken everything extra out of the yard right now since the Hurricane, and I haven't had time to put everything back out yet.

Benton also found this cute tiny little teapot at an estate sale he attended and thought of me. It is really sweet, and on the bottom it says "Salada Tea".  Do you remember Salada tea? Apparently it was made my them and it a tea for one pot. I love it.

Oh, I almost forgot! Rose and Benton also gave me the Vintage Hummingbird puzzle, and my sister Doris gave me the pumpkin puzzle! So I guess I need to get busy and put some puzzles together!

Our sweet son Scott blesses us with his talents when he comes home for a day each weekend...this was before the hurricane...and we were so thankful he got the grass cut down to the pond before the storm. That really helped a lot:

I love to watch him work! LOL.

Okay, so we took a nice walk the day after Hurricane Ian passed through...we've had such beautiful weather ever since...low humidity and much cooler days.

But our thoughts and prayers continue for those who were not so fortunate in that storm, and although it is good they are having good weather now to begin the clean up and restoration of their homes, it will be a long time before things are back to normal for them. They are very much in our hearts.

These wild flowers are in the woods where we love to walk, and I love to see them each fall:

And this was our sunset the day (evening) after the storm had totally passed through...it was a gorgeous sky sent from heaven above to remind us that life goes on and that God is with us through every storm of our lives.  We have much for which to be thankful...

And with that I will say May God's peace reign in your hearts and minds throughout this week and may He hold you safely within His hands always.

Thursday Thankfulness...Friday Foto Friends: Fall Has Arrived!

Good Morning, and Happy Autumn, Fall, Autumnal Equinox, whatever you want to call it, it's finally here and we are so glad!  My calendar says that actually the Autumnal Equinox isn't until tomorrow, but everything else says that Fall begins today, and so I am going to accept that and run with it! I will never forget the first time I remember hearing the term "Autumnal Equinox" used was by my then 5 year old grandson Noah. We had just arrived in Maine on the airplane from Florida and they came to pick us up at the airport. As we were driving out the gate and down the highway I was remarking about how beautiful all the fall leaves were and I asked Noah what he thought about it being "Fall".  He promptly corrected me and said, "Oh no, Grandma! It's the Autumnal Equinox!".  I about fell over with surprise! Out of the mouth of babes should come such big words! LOL. He was very precise in his pronunciation of those words and I was totally stunned that a five year old would even be able to say such words, let alone know what they meant! LOL.  He always was very good with words, and even to this day when he is now almost 23 years old he has a very rich vocabulary. (I just wish he'd call and say Hi more often...)

So today I am thankful for the beautiful weather we are having...it has finally started to cool down just a tad, and the rains seem to have let up for a little while so we can dry out and not be quite so humid.

And so hubby and I decided that on the mornings we go to work at Dixie Cottage we will get there a bit early and take a walk on the beautiful walking trail that starts right outside the door of the store:

There he goes...hey! Wait for me! LOL.  Anyway, this lovely walking path follows the old railroad track line through the old historic section of town, and it is a perfect place for us to take a nice morning walk before we open the store for business.

I was happy to see a variety of wildflowers and Beautyberries along the trail...

A perfect place to catch a glimpse of a Zebra Longwing butterfly sipping its morning nectar from the flowers:

It was quite elusive to my camera's eye...I had to keep trying to follow it as it fluttered and flittered by me:

And finally he lighted on this Firebush plant so that I could get a good picture:

I finally also caught up with hubby so we could take a selfie:

We are both wearing our "Dixie Cottage" t-shirts so you know we are "official". LOL.

I loved seeing these Turk's Cap Mallow flowers, which is kind of like a Hibiscus that never opens up. I remember as kids on the school playground we would pull out the flower and suck the nectar out of the end of it...it was SO sweet! Yes, the butterflies and hummingbirds love this flower too!

We turned around and headed back towards the store, and then I noticed these

beautiful Coral Vine flowers blooming all over the bushes and up on the trees along the road:

Even though they are beautiful, they will take over wherever they are if not kept pruned back...

Oh, another butterfly on the wild lantana bushes:

And there were lots of bees and Skipper butterflies on these wild Coreopsis flowers, (see picture below) also known as "tickseed". I thought this was an interesting comment in the Wikipedia explanation and description of these flowers: "Coreopsis is a variable genus closely related to Bidens. "  Here is the definition of that:

"Bidens is a genus of flowering plants in the aster family, Asteraceae. The common names beggarticks, black jack, burr marigolds, cobbler's pegs, Spanish needles, stickseeds, tickseeds and tickseed sunflowers refer to the fruits of the plants, most of which are bristly and barbed, with two sharp pappi at the end. The generic name refers to the same character; Bidens comes from the Latin bis ("two") and dens ("tooth")."^[3]

Without getting political, I'll just leave that information right there...LOL.

Okay, switching gears a bit, something "new" is developing in our neighborhood.  At the entrance to our subdivision is a large 3 acre tract of commercial land that was nicely wooded. It had been for sale for a while, and finally was sold. So this week they began to clear the land.  Being the good nosey neighbors that we are, we stopped and asked the foreman of the land clearing crew if he knew what was going to be put on this land. He said a "Dollar General Store".  I about choked. I said, "You've got to be kidding!" He said no he wasn't...   Well, here's the scoop on that...we already have a Dollar General store 2 miles to the east of this location. AND, we have another Dollar General store 2 miles to the west of this location, and about a mile beyond that one is a Family Dollar Store that is also a Dollar Tree store since they merged.  Our little town is overrun with Dollar stores, gas stations and thrift stores and one grocery store.  We need restaurants and other kinds of businesses...not another Dollar General Store! And especially not in the entrance to our subdivision.  I contacted our County Commissioner to verify this and he was actually surprised himself, but did some research and found out it is true. So I asked him to please make sure they put a traffic light at that intersection because it is already a dangerous intersection trying to get out onto the highway, etc.  We'll see what happens with that.

These were taken a couple of days ago. The property is mostly clear now. Thankfully they left a boundary of trees around the edges that connect to our housing development.  We live about 1/8th of a mile from this.  I am not a happy camper. My husband actually is a huge Dollar General fan, and now he can just walk there if he wants to. LOL.  Life goes on...trying to keep a positive attitude.

And so here's something funny.  I am working on my outfit for the "High Tea with Mrs. Henry Flagler" that is coming up next weekend.  It was suggested that we come in "period style clothes" of the 1890's, etc.  When I called to get more information I was told that the hats should be large and have lots of flowers. Please don't laugh. I was just sticking some fake flowers around the brim of the hat, but they aren't fastened yet and I didn't know my hubby was going to take my picture or I would have fixed it better.  

A friend from our church gave me the beautiful turquoise colored hat and said I could keep it and do whatever I needed to do with it. So that became my color guide for figuring out the rest of the outfit.

This is definitely still a work in progress.  When the outfit is finally complete, I will take some better pictures to share with you.  Meanwhile, I am excited that one of our friends who comments on blogs occasionally but doesn't have her own blog and who lives in this area is going to come and go with me to the tea.  Then today I heard from another friend in the area who also plans to attend.  It's going to be a lot of fun.

Here is a brief history of Henry Flagler, and HERE is more information about his third wife, who loved to throw lavish parties and was the one who loved the big hats and lots of flowers. It should be a very interesting and fun tea party!

 I guess that's enough stuff for today and tomorrow.  I am thankful for how God watches over us in so many ways.  Oh, and I am also thankful that I did actually hear from our grandson today. I sent him a text this morning to wish him a "Happy Autumnal Equinox Day", and he wrote back a text and told me what he's been doing and apologized for not staying in touch better. Of course I'd love to have a real phone call, but for now I'll take whatever I can get. I know he's busy working every day, and that's a good thing, and he's healthy and safe...and that's an even better thing.  So that was an answer to prayer.
