Saturday Roundup and Blessings

Here it is Saturday evening, and I really don't have much to say.  Thought I'd go through some random pictures from the week and see if we can put it together into some kind of post!

This was the morning sunrise one fine morning this week!  I love how the contrails criss-crossing across the sky glow in the morning sunlight.  It was a beautiful way to start the day...

And then on another morning this past week the skies looked like this... a foggy mist above the pond in the early morning before the sun began to rise.  The lights are from cars passing on the road on the other side of those trees, driving through the fog to get to work on time.  We've had several foggy mornings this week.  It's that in between season time when it can't make up its mind if it's going to be cool and cloudy  or warm and humid.  Usually once the sun comes up it's still pretty hot and humid.

Now this is a picture of progress.  We've had road construction going on in our little town for as long as we've lived here.  They are four-laning the main highway through town, and on this particular day they were putting up some new traffic lights to change lanes from one side to the new  completed side so they can finish working on the other side.  Confused? You should live here. At least it's progress.

A week or so ago I showed you some little signs of autumn here, and today I check them out again and the little cut down maple trees are doing their best to keep growing.

I hope they will get big and tall again and let their colors glow!!

Speaking of glowing...a week or so ago I told my daughter in love that we had some good rib eye steaks in the freezer but our gas grill no longer worked so I wasn't sure when or how we were going to cook them.  Well, the very next day she and our son showed up in our driveway with this in the back of their truck.

No, it wasn't brand new, but it was as good as new, except it needed a few new parts.  My sweet DIL ordered the parts and they brought them over one day this past week too.

Today our son the grill chef put all the new parts in it and got it fired up...and it worked like a charm!

So we decided to test it with some hamburgers tonight.

I said I didn't want to ruin those good steaks on it until we were sure it was going to work good enough for steaks! LOL.

Oh, BTW, did you notice his t-shirt?  LOL.  Anyway...

The burgers turned out perfect, and so as soon as we can get together with our other kids again, (and also have enough steaks to go around for the whole family), we will be having them over for a steak dinner!

I love how resourceful our family is.  We are very blessed indeed.

Here's some food for thought regarding our children, no matter what their age:

Good Night My Friends.
May you sleep in peace.

(This is our sunset right now.  Nothing spectacular, but still beautiful in its own way.
We are blessed with God's perfect peace.)

I Know What You Are Going To Say...

I know what you are going to  say..."I thought you were supposed to be downsizing???"

Yes, I know...I am...but...but...but...something happened to me today...I digressed...I mean, when you see what I did you will surely understand....What little girl (inside a Big Old Girl) can resist a
DOLL HOUSE?  Especially when said dollhouse is at a yard sale alongside the road not far from your house, just begging for you to come and take a look...and when the price is extremely cheap...and it doesn't need too much work to fix it up...and even your hubby says "I think you ought to get it for yourself.." (when my first intention was to get it and give it to someone else so I wouldn't feel guilty about buying it for myself...)  Oh, Lord, forgive me...I know it is Lent...but, well, Father, I am sorry...I could not pass it up...the little child in me just needed to be a little child again...

And so it came home with me...

And when I brought it home and into the house, suddenly all these little people just started clamoring to get inside this new house and check it out...

One little boy was so happy that he knelt right down and prayed and said "Thank You, Lord, for my new home!"

All the little girls checked out all the rooms and windows, each looking for her own special space in the house...
And the sweet little Mother stood on the front porch and said, "Oh my, such a lovely new house! Won't you come inside and have tea with me?"

This sweet little girl was all dressed up for the party...even has a tiara in her hair...and she is anxiously watching at the window for all of the guests to arrive!

There's a lot of excitement going on inside the house in preparation for all the guests.

Even this sweet little girl is up in the attic, watching the street below for the visitors to arrive!

Oh, this little sweetheart is also watching from the bay window, hoping you are coming to the party...

And upstairs in her bedroom is a lovely young lady, trying on her hat and getting herself all pretty, while her little teddy bear watches with awe...

There's that little boy, praying by his bedside again...I think he's very thankful for his new home...or maybe he's praying because he appears to be the only boy in the household of quite a few girls!!

Upstairs...

And downstairs...everyone is excited and getting ready for the tea party...

And Finally, everyone is here!!!  So glad you could come too!!!

We look forward to many more happy occasions together in our new house!! Yes, we still need to hang some curtains  and maybe get a little bit of furniture and pictures on the walls...but that will come in time.  Right now we just want to settle in for the night and enjoy our new home!!
So Good Night!  Thank you again for coming!  Y'all come back now, you hear??

Things That Make Me Wanna Cry Tears of Joy -Revisited

The following post was written originally on 10/23/13, but I was looking for some "mother's day" thoughts and this one popped up, and even though it wasn't written specifically for Mother's Day, I think it fits.

This same son is now 40, and currently is living at home, so I get to see him and tell him I love him every day now...which is something I don't take for granted anymore.  After losing one of our precious sons to cancer three years ago, we never let a day go by without telling our sons (2 adult sons, both currently living at home, at least for now) that we love them...and we tell them to be careful when they go out the door to go to work, and we pray for their safety...and we always are relieved and thankful when they return home safely each night.  Little things like this story written below are precious moments...again, not to be taken for granted.

So, at this Mother's Day time of year, I know many of you mothers are expecting something special from your children.  But I say take a moment each day to say a prayer for your kids, no matter how old they are or how far away from home they may be...and let them know how much you appreciate all the little ways they demonstrate their love for you throughout the year, not just on this one day.

Original Post from 10/23/2013:

I was kind of missing my youngest son this afternoon.  He's 36, and lives not too far away, but works a lot of nights and weekends, so he doesn't get home to visit much anymore. I actually called his cell phone on my way home from work today just to say hi and tell him I loved him and that I miss him and we'd love to have him drop by sometime or give us a call. Of course, it went directly to his voice mail because he was most likely at work. Since he's a cook at a busy restaurant I knew he couldn't answer his phone. But I just wanted to touch base with him and let him know I was thinking about him. He'll probably call back tomorrow when he wakes up.

Well, a few minutes ago I went into the kitchen to get a snack and then into the adjoining dining room to close the blinds for the night.  As I shut the blinds I paused and looked at my special "Tea Time" Calendar that is on the wall

above the bookshelves where I keep my books about tea parties and a few tea pots, cups, cookbooks and other "girl stuff".  I usually don't write on this particular calendar because it is kind of a keepsake, with beautiful photos and recipes, and stories about tea time.

This is a standard Christmas gift from my sister each year and she knows she'd better not forget to give it to  me or I'll be asking if she forgot where she put it! (Our mother used to buy gifts for us ahead of time and then forget where she put them when it came time for Christmas).

Anyway, I happened to notice that something was written on the first day of the month, October 1st. I didn't recall writing anything there, and I was pretty sure my husband wouldn't write on this particular calendar either as it is a little out of the way of the telephone and the other spots where we usually write our appointments.  So I looked a little closer, and realized that this was our son's handwriting...(and spelling)
with his own special brand of goofy faces...it says,
"Scott changed your calendar w/love"...

I guess you know I cried.  I missed him today, and here I discovered that on October 1st, he was here and wrote on my calendar such a precious message..."w/love".

I know I've seen him here at least once since October 1st, but this is the first time I've seen this note.

It's stuff like this that makes me love my kids more and more. Yeah, he's 36, but he's still my "baby".  I guess I'll always be kind of mushy when it comes to my kids, no matter how old they are.

Postscript added later as I was replying to a comment from a friend:  "Isn't it amazing the little things that bring joy to a mother's heart? Think how much more joy we bring to our heavenly Father when we say words of praise and love from our hearts to Him...I should've added that above, but it's still sinking in."

Now this calendar really is a "keepsake"! And my son? Well, he's a "keeper" too!

What kind of things make YOU want to cry tears of joy?

Mommy! Pay Attention to Your Child!

"My son, (daughter?) give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings.  Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh."  Proverbs 4:20-22

As I pulled into the parking lot for work yesterday morning, I was extremely disturbed by something I saw.  The church where I am employed has a lovely pre-school, which attracts mostly what I would call the typical upper-middle class soccer mom type families...for lack of a better description.  I love to see the adorable children arriving to school each morning, driven by Moms and Dads in their fancy SUVs and other luxury vehicles. The kids are freshly scrubbed and dressed in the latest designer kids fashions, "mini-me's" of their equally dressed designer moms.

So what could be so disturbing about that?  Granted, the majority of these parents are extremely involved in the lives of their precious children, sometimes almost to a fault, if that is possible. But there is a disturbing trend that I have been noticing...not just at our pre-school, but in public in general, wherever parents and children are moving about.

Please don't call me a fuddy-duddy, or out of touch with the times, okay?  Just hear me out.  What got MY attention yesterday morning was so upsetting to me it was almost more than I could do to keep quiet and not go chasing after this parent and shouting in her face, "Mommy! Pay attention to your child!"  What was this mother doing that was so distressing?  No, she wasn't abusing her child physically, at least not obviously or on purpose.  But what she WAS doing was totally ignoring her child...a precious, adorable little girl, not more than 3 or 4 years old, who was trying her best to keep up with her mommy as they crossed the street right in front of my car as I turned into the parking lot...the little girl looked at me with big wide eyes circled with bright pink eye glasses. She kept reaching up to her mommy and looking up at her and saying, "Mommy, mommy!" And what was "Mommy" doing?  Yep, you guessed it...she had her face down, staring at the "smartphone" in her hand, obviously engrossed in reading and/or sending texts back and forth, and totally ignoring the pleas of her child.  The child was still in the street, trying to catch up with mommy, and mommy just kept walking, not holding her young child's hand as they crossed the street...totally oblivious to the fact that there was even a vehicle in the street very near her lagging child.  Fortunately I was paying attention and going slowly...but that is a through street, and oftentimes other vehicles are not as cautious as I was being.

As I pulled into my parking space I kept watching this pair walking up the sidewalk toward the classrooms, and that frustrated little girl kept trying to get her mother's attention, kept trying to reach up to hold her hand, kept saying, "Mommy, mommy!"....And never once did I see that mother stop what she was doing and look at her child.  Never once did she reach down and take her hand and speak to her child. She continued to walk with her eyes riveted on her phone, totally ignoring the most important person right before her eyes.

I had to stop and say a prayer for that child and that mother right then and there. I prayed, first of all, that God would protect that sweet child and surround her with His angels at all times, because obviously her mother wasn't too concerned about the immediate welfare of her precious baby. I prayed secondly for that mother, that her eyes would be opened to see her beautiful child...and to cherish her the way I'm sure she intended to, but has gotten sidetracked along the way by the addiction to the gadgets of this world as well as the cares and concerns of whatever or whomever she was so obviously interested in that she would be so totally engrossed in her communication to totally forget her child was beside her.

That is what it is...an addiction to gadgetry.  Not that cell phones/smartphones, laptops, IPODS, IPADS, or whatever you call them are evil things in themselves. No, they serve a great purpose, and when used appropriately are marvelous tools to connect us to the rest of the world.  I wouldn't be communicating with you right now if it weren't for this magnificent technology.  But I constantly have to remind myself that I have a family here in my living room, right behind me, who may be trying to get my attention...and I may be just as guilty of ignoring their pleas as I keep reading and writing instead of focusing my eyes on them.

As I was thinking about this topic, I "googled" a search for a "picture of a parent on a cell phone ignoring their child", and the following article from the Wall Street Journal popped up.  I have attached the link here for your reading.  It pretty well describes and sums up what I am trying to say...

Wall Street Journal article on "The Perils of Texting While Parenting"

I have challenged our young technologically inclined youth pastor to consider taking the youth group on a retreat away from technology for one weekend...no smartphones, computer games, TV, gadgets, etc., for one weekend.  He said they would not be able to function. They could not survive such a weekend. I laughingly teased him saying that "he could not function" without the technology either...and he agreed.  It is a  part of their culture, their makeup, their generation. They have lived with this kind of interaction and communication for their whole lives, and they don't know how to get along without it.

I wonder what would happen if we had a total technological blackout?  Would we be able to survive? I don't  know if the younger generation could...but what about the rest of us?  Have we come so far away from using our own resources, imaginations, and creativity that we cannot function without our "gadgets"?  Do we even know how to communicate with each other FACE to FACE, EYEBALL to EYEBALL, without being distracted by ringtones and the constant draw of yes, I'll say it, facebook, youtube, tweets, texts, etc.?

My new cabinet, purposely built to look "old"
wanna play a game with me?

My woodworker son just recently built me a new cabinet for our home, with the intention of giving me some storage space for some things that have been kept in boxes in a storage room ever since we moved to this house. Some of those particular items are board games...and the idea is now that we have them more easily accessible, we will sit down as a family and PLAY those games.  We will turn off the computers, cell phones, TV, and focus our attention on each other for an evening, or a weekend, and enjoy family time again.

Ok, I've said my piece.  I've gotta go for now. My family is playing a game without me...granted, it is a "Wii" game on the TV, but they are together, and playing.  They are asking for my attention.

Final Words:  "Mommy, Daddy, Husband, Wife, Teenager, PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHILD, SPOUSE, PARENTS, FAMILY!!!"  What could be more important than that?

Questions:
1.  When was the last time YOU put down your computer, laptop, smartphone, etc., and focused attention on your loved one, friend,  child, spouse, person next to you on the plane?
2.  Does your family set aside time for family interaction, game time, conversations, focused attention?
3.  If it has been awhile, why not take a "retreat" away from your gadgets and spend a weekend together doing something totally non-technological?  Take a hike, bike ride, play outdoor games, build something together, play Monopoly or Scrabble or cards.
4.  We only have our loved ones, children, spouses, parents, friends for a little while on this earth. Why not purposely set aside some "quality and quantity" time to make some special memories while you have the opportunity. Don't text your time away thinking you've got plenty of time.  You may live to regret that choice.

"My Three Sons"

My Three Sons
Matthew, Benton, and Scott - Cathedral Ledge, N. Conway, NH
October 1992

This is a picture of "My Three Sons"...no, not the old TV sitcom with Fred MacMurray and William Frawley and three boys I can't remember...but MY Three Sons: Matthew, Benton, and Scott.  This is my favorite picture of my three sons...why?  Well, I believe it is the very last picture I have of all three of them together before they left the home-nest for good and went their separate ways in search of whatever life God had in store for each of them.  At this particular time Benton and Matt had already left home to go off to college, and Scott was still in high school.

Matt, Noah, and Nicole May, 2010
We had just moved to New Hampshire to pastor a church, and this was Benton and Matt's first trip "home" to visit us at the new home they had not yet seen.  A certain young lady from our church volunteered (rather cheerfully, I might add) to take the boys on a tour of the countryside and help them get acquainted with their new surroundings.  That same certain young lady became our daughter in law about ten months later, when Matthew and Nicole tied the knot...and "My Three Sons" became My Three Sons and a Daughter in Law! And thus began the enlarging of our family tree and the metamorphosis of our family as we knew it.  This was a happy event and pleasant change, which later resulted in the introduction of our first (and so far, only) grandson, Noah. You can read more about Matthew's saga over the past year through previous episodes of this blog.  We are very thankful that he is still doing well in his battle against the aggressive cancer (Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor) that invaded his body just about one year ago exactly. We are trusting God for a positive outcome and a long and prosperous life for Matt and his precious family.

Benton with Grandpa
And what happened to the other two sons?  Well, they are still writing their own life stories.  They are each unique and wonderful in their own right...you can see more about Benton on my blog-page "Ben's Country Woodshop".  He is currently living here at home again after many years away from home. That is a story in itself that I am saving for another day when God releases it from within my heart.  He is a joy and a blessing to us in so many ways.  Scott is still living in NH, right back there in the shadow of "Cathedral Ledge", cooking in one of the local restaurants and enjoying the snow.  He is healthy and seems happy, and for that we are grateful.
Scott

We are not sure what the future holds for any of our boys, but again, we are trusting God to complete the plans that He has promised for each of them.  For each of "My Three Sons" I prayed, both before they were ever born, and of course, every day thereafter.  At an early age we, as their parents, committed and dedicated them to the Lord, and one by one, in their own time, each one accepted that faith in Christ for himself.  So I have faith that God will continue to care for them, long after I leave this earth.  He has given me that assurance, and I have no reason to doubt it.

God says to us in Jeremiah 29:11,
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."
I have applied this verse to myself many times, and believe I can also claim it for my three sons as well.  During these days of tremendous unrest in our world, we are all feeling a bit anxious over the future of our nation and our world...but I still can rest...and trust...

"Bless the Lord, O my soul; and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's."  Psalms 103:2-5
Yes, my heart cries out with the Psalmist,
Our family today...this picture was added later, when we finally all got together again for my father's funeral, April, 2011.  Bittersweet Time.
"Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name." (Psalm 103:1)    Amen.
