Summer Books
Welcome to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 which is not limited to Tuesday by any means. You can join in whenever you want to! Click HERE to join in the fun. Will you be reading this coming summer? When the weather gets hot and humid so many stay indoors to keep cool and studies show that people read more in the summer. How about you? Let's discuss it.1. Do you have a favorite kind of book that you like in the summertime? What kind is it? Mystery? Bio?...No particular kind, just whatever strikes my fancy as I go looking. I do like cozy mysteries, and I also like historical fiction. I prefer Christian authors and publishers, but I will read other books if I can be assured they aren't full of foul language and too graphic descriptions. I don't need to fill my head with that kind of trash.
2. Is there a book you return to again and again and if so why?
Well, besides the Bible, I'm trying to think of one. It used to be that I would try to wait at least five years between reading a book again so I wouldn't remember too much of the story to make it interesting. But nowadays I could probably read the same book over and over again and not remember if I'd ever read it before or not. LOL. I definitely enjoyed reading the Mitford series of books by Jan Karon, and wouldn't mind reading them over again, but I gave away all of my copies. I could check them out at the library I suppose. I hear she has a new one coming out in October, so I will be watching for that.
3. What book is better than the movie and what movie is better than the book??The Guernsey Litierary and Potato Peel Pie Society was an
excellent book, and it also became a movie, which I saw after reading the book. Although I loved the movie and the characters, it did leave some things out that were in the book and I was glad that I had read the book first so I understood the story better in the movie.
As far as a movie being better than a book, I am not sure. Perhaps Anne of Green Gables with Megan Follows as Anne, and Little Women with
Katharine Hepburn as Jo. But truly, I don't think any movie can capture the full depth of Louisa May Alcott's book, Little Women, or capture the complete personality of Anne of Green Gables as did the author,
Lucy Maud Montgomery.
4. Do you have a list of books you are looking forward to reading this summer? These books below are currently in my bookbag from the public library. I have already finished reading these first two:
And I'm currently working on this one:
These were all three much BIGGER, thicker books than I normally read, especially those first two by Kate Morton. I've never read any of her books before, because I usually look for books that are from Christian publishers with a Christian author and theme. The book by Tamera Alexander fits that description well, and it is so far so good, but it's taking me a while to really get into it. The other two by Kate Morton turned out to be excellent, even if they weren't exactly what fits into my normal genre of reading. They were definitely mysteries, with a lot of going back and forth between characters and into the past to figure out the whole story. And they were clean enough to meet my standards of what makes a decent book to read. LOL. No foul language or really steamy descriptions of relationships, so I actually enjoyed them both once I got into them, and I would probably read more from this author.
I used to read a lot of non-fiction type books that have current authors and topics on faith, devotional style books and those that especially encourage us in our relationship with God and our fellow humans. And I certainly can always still use encouragement and education in that area of life, but I find that I mostly just enjoy reading for entertainment and relaxation nowadays. And our ladies' Bible study at church and our adult Sunday School class usually helps to fill that need for growing in my faith and encouraging others. However, if a book is highly recommended and it is something I am interested in learning more about, I will "check it out". Which, btw, is my usual manner of reading. I rarely buy a book these days, unless it is written by someone I know, like some of our blogging friends are published authors and I love to have copies of their books, but mostly I check out books from the library or, if I see something I want to read at a thrift store or yard sale that is reasonably priced, I will buy it and then donate it to the library when finished. I don't need any more books on my shelves.
I have found this scripture verse to be a helpful guide when choosing a book to read or a movie to watch. I know sometimes we can get hi-jacked when reading a book and discover part way through that it is not what we thought it was going to be and we can choose to put it down if it is offensive, or walk out of or turn off a movie if it bombards us with foul language and other things that are not fit for our minds and eyes to see. This is why I am choosey about the types of authors and publishers I look for when selecting a book.
Philippians 4:8 KJV
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Thank you, Annie, for another thought provoking Tuesday 4. Sunshine and Blackie approve of this message. LOL.
I'm just filling out a book my daughter gave me. It's full of questions about me and will go back to her when it's done. The question I answered today was favorite book and I said the same as you. The only book I've read over and over again is the Bible.
ReplyDeleteI did read the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Club and really liked it too.
Love your kitties! 🐈⬛ 🐈
ReplyDeleteHaha, I am so happy the message was approved by the dynamic duo there! I don't like reading books about people with diseases or unhappy endings. I want books that uplift or make me happy as there is too much bad news in the world today. I tend to like mysteries and downhome kind of stories without drama. Thank you for joining in! It is much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your answers. I am not a reader and I really need to try harder to be one. Always enjoy seeing the cats. Hope your week is going well.
ReplyDeleteI love the classics, too, and enjoy watching old movies. I like fantasy books but even there I have to watch out for foul language--just why! (Some books need ratings like movies!) Your back porch is a perfect place to read with the kitties nearby and the cranes to entertain when you look up....
ReplyDeleteThat is the sweetest picture of your two feline babies!! My two don't ever get that close!! They are both quite handsome! I enjoyed the Mitford Series, too. It's been a long time since I read them. I like the Left Behind series too. I enjoyed your post (always do)!! Sending a hug!
ReplyDeleteKISSES for Blackie and Sunshine.. MUAH MUAH!! I am with you about reading a book and can read again and not remember enough details to ruin it. same with a movie, I seem to have stopped retaining what I read or see, but retain enough to enjoy reading the book. right now I read Susie May Warren in Kindle unlimited, anything she writes fit the scripture you posted today
ReplyDeleteI read ALOT, And that happens to me alot too--- just enjoying a really good story and bam!-- suddenly lots of foul words, situations etc. Those kitties sure look happy and content on " their " porch, . 😊 . Enjoyed your Memorial day previous post and seeing Bentons nice creations too--- love those red white and blue crosses! I can see how when May 25 rolls around it is alot of sadness for you. Joy that he's in Heaven with our Savior but deep sadness that you miss him from this life. 😢. Hope the new week is going well so far and do you know when hubby's test is rescheduled for yet?--- we are keeping him in prayer. 🙏. Are those beautiful roses still blooming? We finally got ours planted! Two blooms but not big like yours. Yesterday, after approximately THREE hours of darkening skies and distant thunder rumbling while we were outside doing chores/feeding/walking the fields/checking plants etc--- it finally rained hard! 🌧 💧 🌂 💧
ReplyDeleteWhat an enjoyable post! I hadn't heard of most of these books, but just the title of "... and Potato Peel Society" made me grin out loud. Your preferred genre makes me wonder if you've read any of Grace Livingston Hill? Her books were my grandmother's favorites that I'd pick out while visiting her Minnesota farmhouse.
ReplyDeleteSo many good books ... so little time!
I used to have a collection of Grace Livingston Hill books. My mother and I collected them together...she'd give me whatever she found. I finally donated them to a church library at one of the churches we pastored. They were great books!
DeleteI sure enjoyed the last photo of your two lovelies on the deck. They are really very pretty. Unfortunately, I have no time to read during the summer. Only my Bible and the studies I do. Summer is so quick for my girls ( One is a school counselor and the other a dyslexia specialist) so I try to spend as much time as possible with us all hanging around the pool and of course shopping. These look like some great reads and I actually wrote them down for a later time. Happy last week of May 2025
ReplyDeleteOur reading habits seem to be quite similar. I'm reading a book right now that I picked up a the national homestead museum in Beatrice, NE about homesteading families in the area. I don't remember the title and it's on my nightstand in the bedroom where Dennis is now sleeping and I don't want to wake him. :-). Dennis and I have both read all of the Mitford books too and have enjoyed them a lot. I tend to read the same sort of books you do. I used to read a lot of Christian romances, but I seem to have gotten "burnt out" on those. Of course, the book I read the most is the Bible. I'm doing a chronological study through it this year and enjoying it a lot.
ReplyDeleteThe kitties look very happy to be back together again. I think you've definitely been adopted.
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
I've been looking for a good book to read in bed . . . having so much trouble that last night I grab one that I read about ten years ago to read again. Thanks for the suggestions.
ReplyDeleteI am reading more again it is a good way to relax at night, I do my Bible study in the day. If I lived by your pond, I would spend time enjoying nature like you do. Today at Bible journaling, I talked about Bathsheba and Acts 2. I love studying before I share with the ladies in my group. Have a great week, Pamela!
ReplyDeleteI think I've read The Distant Hours book. I'd have to go back and her my books read lists, lol. I also like to find a book without too much graphic language and activities. Sometimes I get a surprise though. If I review the book I try to warn the readers in advance. You've reminded me about Little Women which I enjoyed a lot in movie format. I saw several different versions of it and they were all good!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your answers. several people have mentioned the mitford series. I've read one of the books and started the second. the books you got from the library look good.
