Some good thoughts to ponder as we begin another New Year:
Photos taken from one of my new 2023 calendars, this one by Thomas Kincade is always a favorite.
Here it is! The first day of the New Year of 2023! So hard to believe we have come this far!! To a young person it may not seem like any big deal...but to those of us who are "Baby Boomers", born in the middle of the last century, it may seem surreal that we are living in years that we only dreamed about way back then...and wondered just how different life would be by now. There certainly has been a LOT of progress over the past 3/4 of a century, and yet in some ways there has been a lot of going backwards. We may be very modern in our technological advances, but our world is becoming more and more backwards in the things that really matter, like faith, morality, and devotion to God our Creator and Jesus our Savior. It seems as though we are on a slippery slope leading to destruction, and it truly grieves my heart to see it...but I can only imagine how much more it must grieve God.
I did not intend to start this post out on a negative note, but as my heart is attuned to God's Word and His message for us today, I am afraid that what I am seeing around us is not all butterflies and bliss. Perhaps God is trying to get my attention...this is for me as much as it is for the rest of us...and that leads me to what I believe I am "hearing" is going to be my "One Word" for 2023...Listen. I had said recently that I didn't want to select that word because I saw that one of my other blogging friends had already chosen it and I didn't want to be a copycat...but when I read it on her Facebook post, it jumped out at me and got my attention...was that God? Perhaps, because it keeps coming back to me every day since, and as no other word has gotten my attention as much as that one, I think I have gotten the message. And here is a verse that has also gotten my attention:
Isaiah 55:2
"Why do you spend money for what is not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And let your soul delight itself in abundance."
What really got my attention in that verse is that it also includes two of my other "One Word" choices for previous years. "Delight" was the word for 2022, and Abundance was in 2019. Here is a link to a post that covers all of my previous years of One Word choices:
Link to last year's One Word and more
And so, yes, Lord, I am listening carefully for Your voice, telling me which way to go...
"Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying,
“This is the way, walk in it,”
Whenever you turn to the right hand
Or whenever you turn to the left."
Isaiah 30:21

May I be attentive to God's Word and leading in my life in this new year and beyond. Amen.
So now, moving right along, it has been a very busy last weekend of 2022. But it's all good! Let me share the highlights of the past couple of days with you. If you are a Facebook friend you may have already seen most of these pictures, but please just bear with me if you can. Beware, there will be a LOT of pictures...so hold on tight for a long ride...
Friday was our sweet "daughter in love" Rose's birthday! So, at her request, we had lasagna for dinner.
We changed out the Christmas decor on the table for birthday party decor.
Here's hubby enjoying his plate of lasagna. It was a little "soupy" because I think I had too much sauce, but it sure tasted mighty good, along with a nice tossed salad and garlic bread...yummy!
There's my partially eaten dinner. Sorry if it looks messy...but it tasted much better than it looked.
See? You can see I'm happy...
And then we had birthday cake! This was a vanilla/white cake, with butter cream cheese frosting. Rose taught me how to make the frosting, and it is SO good. This is her favorite cake:
And here comes the big blow!
She blew it all out in one big blow!
Great Job!
Her sweet hubby said she deserved a big kiss for being so sweet.
Their sweet pups, our grandpups, got some new "shoe toys" to chew on, a gift sent from Uncle Billy and Aunt Peggy. Here' Spice enjoying her new shoe...
And here's Sugar daring anyone else to come try to take her shoe toy away! LOL.
They chewed and played with those shoes until they were all tuckered out.
So that was Friday night.
And then on Saturday my sweet sister Doris and her hubby drove two hours to come spend the day with us and celebrate a belated Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Here's Doris and I, having some fun sister time in my little play room.
Doris is the "Auntie from the city" who keeps adding more members to the little family at Pamela' Victorian Cottage!
This new little girl is timidly coming up to the front door to see if she will be welcomed by the rest of the family...
Her name is "Christmas Cheer Wendy", and she certainly is dressed cheerily in a lovely green gown with big red poinsettias decorating the front...and oh! She is a little Redhead! I believe she must be related to me!
The little mother at Pamela's Victorian Cottage is perplexed again at yet another mouth to feed and more dresses to make...but the rest of the children are quite happy to have another new playmate...
Some of the children are dressed up for Christmas and are in the kitchen, helping prepare some goodies for their guests...
Everyone in the house is scurrying about to make Wendy and their Auntie from the city feel welcome...
Yes, I think Christmas Cheer Wendy will help to make every Christmas even more cheery! There is plenty of love to go around for everyone!
Meanwhile, while we were playing with Pamela's Victorian Cottage, the guys said it was time for dessert...so here's my hubby and my brother in law Art enjoying some pie and cake and whatever else there was to eat...
And our son Benton was there to enjoy some too...btw, this was after we had a very sumptuous dinner of black eyed peas & rice, a.k.a. "Hoppin' John", Ham, Collard greens, cornbread, salad, leftover lasagna. Oh, and son Scott was also here, but he left before I remembered to take his picture...
And sweet Rose and Doris and I sat down to have a tea party with our dessert...
We each had a "cup of Christmas Tea"...
And just enjoyed visiting and relaxing after a busy time of playing...
Oh, and my sister also gave me the other traditional gift of the "Teapot Calendar"...
(I told you this was the year for calendars! And I love them all! Now, what day is it? LOL)
This calendar shares pictures of beautiful teapots from all around the world, with stories about them and sometimes some special recipes for teatime.
I like what that says..."Happiness is to hold flowers in both hands." What a beautiful word picture that gives us.
Well friends, it is time to wrap this up. While I was sitting here writing I noticed there was a beautiful sunset in the skies over Still Waters Pond, so I had to run outside and capture some pictures before it totally disappeared!
This is the first sunset of 2023:
I thought I'd missed the best part of it so went back inside to keep writing...
And then it changed again...
And it seemed to just get more beautiful every minute...
So I'm glad I didn't quit watching and waiting...
because much like our lives, if we just "stop, look, and listen" (there's that word!)
We may discover that "the best is yet to come!"
So let us look eagerly into the New Year with joyful anticipation of what God may have in store for us. Isaiah seems to be the book with the words for us tonight...
Isaiah 43:18-19
18 "Do not remember the former things,
Nor consider the things of old.
19 Behold, I will do a new thing,
Now it shall spring forth;
Shall you not know it?
I will even make a road in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert."
Happy New Year dear friends!!
What a wonderful start to the new year. Your Victorian cottage is so lifelike when the world gets too full of drama I like to look at pictures of a cozy world full of innocent beauty. I do not choose a word for the new year but did find myself wondering last night just what 2023 will bring but I am going to find comfort in knowing god is in control.
ReplyDeleteAmen to that!! We need not fear the future when we know Who holds the future in His hands!! God bless you! Hope we can get together again soon.
DeleteHappy New Year Pamela! What a nice Birthday celebration with yummy food. I am glad you got to visit with your sister. Good One Word and similar to mind which is focus. I just wrote about it at my blog. Enjoy your week!
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, Focus! I did that one way back, and it was a good one for me as well. I hope you have a blessed and happy New Year!
DeleteI sure enjoyed the catch-up post with all the great fun-filled pictures, Pam! Rose's cake looks delicious! The sunsets in your backyard are always beautiful. Guess what!! I got a teapot for Christmas! And I then got an electric water heater so I am ready for you to come for a visit!! Happy New Year!! xo
ReplyDeleteOh, how wonderful!!! A real teapot and an electric tea kettle? You are all set! I'll be right down! LOL. Wish it were that simple! But that would be so lovely! Thank you for your kind thoughts and friendship. Happy New Year.
DeleteThe best is yet to come if we would only listen, Pamela. What an amazing word for the year! Mine is "mindful," and I will give more details in blogs to come. Isn't it such a blessing that God places appropriate words in our laps and invites us upon new and unique adventures? He is so infinitely good!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to Rose! I pray that God's blessings will fill all your hearts with hope and joy in the year to come!
Yes, I am listening for God's call and leading in this New Year. Mindful is a very deep and powerful word. I like that very much and look forward to hearing more about it as God leads you. And yes, I enjoy the new word adventures each year. It's always interesting to see how God pulls it all together for us, and YES, He is so infinitely good! Amen. Thank you for the kind thoughts. We will be passing through your area on Thursday, but I know better than to try and ask the guys to slow down at that point for a visit. They will be set on arriving at our destination on time and getting around Atlanta in whatever "easy" way we can...the only challenging part of this trip. (well, I pray that is the only challenging part! LOL). But I will be thinking about you and blowing kisses and waving at you as we pass near you. Have a blessed and beautiful New Year my friend.
DeleteHappy New Year Pamela! I always, always love to see your posts pop up. They take me to happiness and God's WORD which always brings me joy. I have two words that keep coming to my mind. Generosity and would you believe, listen?
ReplyDeleteI love that you call Rose your "daughter in love". I love my mother-in-law that we're taking care of, but she can be difficult. It's always been that way. I'd like to think she loves me, but I'm really not sure.
My biggest resolution this year is to read the Bible through again. Dennis read it at least 7 times last year that I know of. If he can do that, I should be able to manage one time, right?
Oh, I almost forgot to say that I think you and your sister look a lot alike. :-) Did you play dolls together as young girls?
Blessings and love,
Betsy
The best is always yet to come for those who love The Lord. What a great birthday for Rose and a happy day with your sister and her husband. You two make a pair of cute redheads. (BTW, soupy lasagna is my favorite kind. I am not a fan of dry lasagna.)
ReplyDeleteAmen to your first statement! That is so true. That's why some people say to bury them with a fork in their hand, "because the best is yet to come"....have you heard that story before? Oh, my sister is not a redhead...I am, but I've faded over time. She was a brunette growing up, but now she uses a rinse that kind of looks the same as my hair color does now, so that helps make us look more like sisters than before. LOL. yes, I prefer moister lasagna too. I usually use 1/2 ricotta and 1/2 cottage cheese...and that helps keep it more moist. Happy New Year dear friend in Maine! I hope you are warm enough!
DeleteI love all the celebrations you had with family. I got a new Thomas Kincaide calendar for 2023 too. What a beautiful sunset and listen is a very good word. Hope you have a very good day.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cathy. It's been a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Oh, I'm happy you have a T.K. calendar too. Does yours have the scripture verses on each month? Not all of them do, but I got this one at Walmart and was so pleased that it has the verses on it. I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week and Happy New Year.
DeleteSuch wonderful celebrations of love and laughter you enjoyed! Gosh, Rose's birthday dinner looks delicious! I'm waiting to open presents from the 'kids' on Saturday -- but if there's no Thomas Kincaide calendar under the tree, I'm ordering one for myself. I've never enjoyed black-eyed peas before, but yesterday it tasted particularly good -- in fact, I ate half the can! Still praying you enjoy a pain-free week, my friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Myra. Oh, you are still waiting on Christmas? That's right...well, I bought this particular Thomas Kincade calendar at Walmart. Be sure to look for the one with the scripture verses on it. Not all of them have the verses, but I like that so much. I'm glad you enjoyed some black eyed peas. The ones I fixed were a little "dressed up"...look up a recipe for "Hoppin' John". I used canned beans instead of cooking the dry ones, to save time and energy. They were very good. Thank you for the prayers. Please keep praying. Hoping things will calm down when I can calm down. Right now I have to take a lot of breaks to rest my back in between "housework" and chores. It's frustrating to say the least! We will be on a little trip this weekend, so maybe I can rest a bit then. Take care and Happy New Year.
DeleteHappy Birthday to Rose. The dinner look wonderful. The bible verse Isaiah 55:2 is lovely. Enjoyed seeing your photos. Your collection with the doll house is awesome.
ReplyDeleteThank your Debby. I love that verse too, and am glad God directed me to it! (I was listening! ) And I do have fun with my little sweet dollhouse. My sister has blessed me with all those lovely "children" throughout the years...she gives me a new one every year for Christmas...and they needed a home besides being put in a box all year long and only coming out at Christmas time. This was perfect! I never planned it that way...it's just one of those little blessings in life. Happy New Year my friend across the country!
DeleteYour word choice is a good one. I will share my word for 2023 later this week. I love your pictures of your cottage and the stories you tell about the little dolls. Happy New Year to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cecelia. I will look forward to hearing what your word is going to be. I may not respond right away as we will be away this weekend for my hubby's cousin's Celebration of Life. But I will try to get caught up when I get back home. Thank you for enjoying my little "Pamela's Victorian Cottage" and family. I don't think I've ever grown up. LOL. Happy New Year to you and yours too. Did your son get to come home yet for Christmas? I must go see if you've written anything.
DeleteHey Pamela,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the pictures of your family celebrations, as always. 💗
Everyone looks so happy.. including the grandpups plus the girls in Victorian Cottage!
Lasagna is a favorite of mine, soupy or dry.😋
I'd appreciate it if you could tell me about choosing a word for the New Year? I've seen it mentioned in other blogs too and I'm not familiar with this idea.
I hope you're feeling better by now.
Blessings, Linda
Thank you for writing, Linda. So wonderful to hear from you. Regarding the word for the New Year, I know there may be an organized group that talks about this each year, but I don't follow any other group or particular blogger about this...I just kind of adapted it for my own personal use. Rather than make a New year's resolution, I pray about a 'One Word" that I believe would be a key word or thought to focus upon throughout the year. I ask God to reveal it to me through Scripture, or even through other readings or ideas that are somehow placed before me. It just seems as though God always leads me to some particular word or thought that is encouraging, uplifting or inspirational as I seek His leading. If you click on the link I shared above in the beginning that goes back to a previous post that I wrote about this, it also has a link in it going back in time to show the different words I've had over the past several years, and how they came to be my "One Word" for the year. My suggestion is just pray about it and see if it is something that you feel God is leading you to do...and then "listen" for His answer as you read His Word, or perhaps other readings that speak to your heart. It's just a way to see how God will use that word in your life throughout the year. Sometimes I get distracted from it and forget, and then other times it seems as though my word gets brought to my attention in all kinds of ways when I least expect it. It doesn't have to be deep...it can be just fun...it's just a way to grow throughout the year. Let me know if you this helps you and if you decide to try this for this year. God bless you my friend. (btw...I just responded to your email. :) )
DeleteI so enjoyed your post. Great photos....you guys really know how to make the most of your celebrations! The food always looks amazing - and it is evident how much you enjoy being with one another! What a sweet blessing! I don't suppose you've heard all your life that you and your sister look so much alike!! Glad she was able to visit. You have had a lovely holiday season! And I really like your word for this coming year. I think this year ahead will have plenty of time (extra time) for me to "be still" and, hopefully, to listen. To really hear His voice and all that He wants me to hear through the tough months ahead. I have some big challenges in front of me (health wise)....and I truly want to listen. And to hear. Thanks for sharing here. Your posts are always so encouraging! Blessings to you -
ReplyDeleteHi Pamela. I love your word for the year. Listening to God for answers is so important. I can sure see a family resemblance between you and your sister. You birthday dinner and cake for Rose look so delicious. So glad you had a good Christmas and got to spend a lot of time with family. Have a good week. See you again soon!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your daughter in love. It looks like you had a fabulous time visiting family and friends over the holiday and lots to eat, lol. I didn't put out a big spread this year because I'm finding that we can no longer eat so much and even the smallest bird or ham roast just has too much for us to properly use up. Of course, if I had a lot of company like you do, it would be different. So glad you are up to being a good hostess. Happy New Year to you and all your family.
ReplyDeleteBelated Happy New Year to you and John and your family, Pam, and hope it will also be a healthy one for all. Thanks for sharing the family photos and looks like everyone enjoyed Rose’s 🎂dinner and dessert. Also, the visit from your sister, Doris, was a nice treat to start off a new year.
