Friday Fotos always end up being a surprise to me. As of Thursday morning, I had no new pictures to share. It seemed like there was nothing worth looking at to even take a picture, plus it was raining.
We tried to go take a morning walk, and it started pouring on us, so we had to hurry back into the car before we got soaked.
After the rain stopped I walked around outside to see what I could see, and I did see something really special! This lovely rosebud was drenched in raindrops (one of "My Favorite Things"....remember? "Raindrops on Roses and Whiskers on Kittens..."? (Julie Andrews, Sound of Music, for those of you who may need a little extra jog to your memory)
Again, this is a rose from the "Memorial Garden Rosebush" that we brought with us from our previous home. It had been a gift in memory of our son, so I didn't want to leave it behind.
After the sun came out the rose bud began to open up even wider,
and so I decided to cut it and bring it inside where I can enjoy it every day while it lasts:
There it sits in my mother's beautiful green glass vase, next to a picture of our son Matthew.
I always say "Thank you" to Matthew when this rose blooms, because I feel like it is a gift from him from heaven.
Thursday, April 30, 2020 was also the first anniversary of my oldest brother Russell's passing after a hard fought battle with leukemia. So he was very much on my heart and mind all day as well.
This picture of him below was before he got sick, standing beside the boat that he was building. He didn't get to finish the boat before he had to sail away into heaven's harbor. I'm thinking that he and my son Matthew might just be fishing in heaven today...they both loved fishing, and if there is fishing in heaven, they've found all the good spots!
Now changing scenes a bit. Can you see the baby bird in this picture below?
No? Well, how about this closer up view? Trust me, he's there, right behind those big green leaves and next to the tree trunk. How do I know? Well I saw him fluttering around in there after he had actually come and tried to get into my little den window while I was sitting here typing on the computer. I heard this tapping on the window pane, and looked up and saw this very young Cardinal flapping his wings and trying so hard to come into that window. By the time I could grab my camera he was gone, but I went outside and saw some activity in this tree:
And then I also saw this very stern looking male cardinal, most likely the father, staring at me and then flying around trying to distract me and get his fledgling child to get a move on before the human got too close. After a flurry of excitement between the father and the mother, I eventually saw them all three fly off to another tree and then on to the woods on the other side of our property. Most likely they will be keeping him away from my window from now on...but I'll bet they'll be back to the bird feeder in the yard! I will be watching as often as possible without disturbing them too much.
I first showed you this picture below last year right when we were in the process of moving to this house. This was the view from our front porch, to a beautiful big magnolia tree in the lot across the street.
Well, this was the view of that same tree in the bright sunshine, but I wanted to show you that it is now blooming...you can't see too many of the blossoms in this picture, but there are blossoms all around this tree...
Here's one just getting ready to open...
And here's one that is already wide open...
And here are several looking up through the branches, some open, and some about to open...
I am really enjoying seeing all the beautiful magnolias blooming all around our area right now. Seems like there is a magnolia tree in just about every yard! They are so pretty.
Now these pictures are for my sister Doris...she gave me this coleus plant last year for my birthday not long after we moved here...and it is really going to town now with new growth.
I never knew how interesting a coleus bush could be, but their leaves are just beautiful.
Such interesting color and patterns!! I need to transplant it and perhaps break off some of the long branches and root them and make more plants. But remember, I'm not the sister with the green thumb...she is...so I may wait until she can come visit and show me what to do...That's how she taught me how to sew...I'd try to do something difficult, and when I couldn't figure it out, I'd ask her to help me and she would show me how to do it by doing it for me...Isn't that what big sisters are for???
I am blessed to have such a patient big sister. Speaking of family, and in memory of my brother Russell, I thought I'd share a few family pictures with you:
L to R: "The Stair-Steps" Russell, Clifford, Doris, Pam (me! "The Little Redhead") with our Dad and Mom behind us.
Probably around the same year: Me on the front, my brother Clifford on the back behind me, Russell and Doris (in our farm home in Pennsylvania)
Our first Christmas in our new home in Florida, Me, Doris, Russell, Clifford, hanging our stockings with care. I don't think those stockings are going to hold much!
My Dad built this house in 1957, and my parents lived there until they both had passed away. It was sold, after belonging to our family for 54 years, to a neighbor who knew and loved my parents and loved their house. It was a very special home built with much love. I miss it...but I miss the people that lived and loved there even more.

Russell, Clifford, Doris, Pam...and believe it or not, we didn't plan our outfits to match!!!
We've done that a lot in our lives.
Sadly, our last sibling picture together, April 27, 2019

Thankfully we all got to be together that one last time.
Not trying to be melancholy here, but just thinking about how many people are not able to be with their loved ones right now due to this Covid 19, and many have not been able to say goodbye to those who have passed on because of it. It really makes us stop and count our blessings, but also reminds us to make every moment count together because we never know when it will be our last time together.
Okay, back to something more pleasant to think about:
Hubby wanted some Hot Dogs and Baked Beans for supper. That made me think about having "brown bread" with the baked beans, which is a New England thing. The problem is I didn't think about it early enough to get the bread done in time for supper, as hubby likes to eat kind of early. So the bread finished baking about an hour later, and now (written on Thursday night) it is cooling and waiting for me to have some for dessert!! I am going to go slice a piece and put some butter on it and eat it for my snack while it is still warm. It smells SO good!!
Here's the recipe I followed in case you are interested. Those of you who make your bread without the benefit of a bread machine probably know what to do and when to do it. I mix up the ingredients, put it in the pan, push the start button and let it do the work for me.
Brown Bread Recipe
(for Bread Machine)
1&1/2 Cups warm water
3/4 Cup Oatmeal
1/3 Cup Molasses
2 Tablespoons Butter, cut into small chunks
Place all of above ingredients in the bread pan while you mix up the dry ingredients:
3 Cups Bread Flour (I use King Arthur)
1 &1/2 Teaspoon Salt
Add above dry ingredients to the liquid ingredients already in the bread pan.
Make a little "well" in the top of the flour and add 2 Teaspoons of Bread Machine Yeast.
Set the Bread Machine for the Whole Wheat Setting and press "Start"!
The whole process should take about 3 3/4 hours from start to finish.
Yeah, It's good!! It's Really Good!
I apologize if my post made you a little sad. That was not my intention. As I said in the beginning, "Friday Fotos always end up being a surprise to me." When I started writing this tonight (Thursday), I had no idea what I would write or what photos I would share. I guess I kind of meandered around in this post a bit, but some days are just like that, aren't they?
We don't always know what each day has in store for us. But rest assured, God knows.
That reminds me of one of my favorite Psalms, Psalm 139. I won't quote the whole Psalm here as it is quite long. Perhaps I will just share a few of the more pertinent verses to what I am trying to say:
Psalm 139
"1. O LORD, You have searched me and known me.
2. You know my sitting down and my rising up.
You understand my thought afar off.
3. You comprehend my path and my lying down,
and are acquainted with all my ways.
4. For there is not a word on my tongue,
but behold, O Lord,
You know it altogether."
13. "For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother's womb.
14. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
and that my soul knows very well.
15. My frame was not hidden from You,
when I was made in secret,
and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
the days fashioned for me,
when as yet there were none of them.
17. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
18. If I should count them, they would be more in number
than the sand;
When I awake, I am still with You."
23. "Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
24. And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting."
Amen.
This is a good place to say good night...or good morning if you are just reading this Friday morning. (Which will be MAY DAY!!!) It is kind of late now (Thursday evening, the last day of April!) so I think I will wait and post it in the morning. Who knows? I may think of something else to say by then! (I hope not. I think I've said enough for one post!) YES, I THOUGHT OF SOMETHING...IT'S THE FIRST DAY OF MAY!!!! Good bye April, Hello May. I sure hope May will be a better month than April was! Can I get an amen?
Have a blessed and beautiful weekend my friends. Count your blessings, and remember, God is always with us. He knows our every thought and what is on our hearts. We can trust Him to take care of any anxieties we may have. So just relax and let Him take charge of your day!!
Loved seeing all of your photos. Roses with dew or rain on them always make such pretty subjects. And that coleus! I loved that about Florida, that plants that die off every year up here in the north could stay out and keep growing. It was amazing to me to see huge Poinsettias growing in the summer or snake plants in the garden. Thank you for sharing your world.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting "my world" today. We are truly blessed to have such beauty surrounding us in every season. There is always something to enjoy and be thankful for. Today is a lovely day already, cooler and low humidity and sunshiny. Doesn't get any better than that in Florida! Have a blessed weekend.
DeleteI loved your poignant post today Pamela. It was good to read of your precious memories of family. I love the connection between your beloved son and the blooming roses. That is very special. It was so wonderful that all the siblings could be there with your brother at the end of his time here and support him in that way. I can see the love in the photos and I'm sure he felt your love too. The bread looks awesome and I'm sure you enjoyed every morsel. I so enjoy eating freshly baked bread too. The cardinal in the photo probably would have liked some as well, lol. Thanks for enlarging the photo with the well hidden bird. I did manage to see his tail feathers. Take care and have a wonderful weekend. It is always good to count our blessings. I love that old song "count your blessings, name them one by one, count your blessings, see what God has done, count your blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done." I think I got the words right. It's been so long since I sang this song as a child in Sunday School. I've never heard it since.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Penny. We were blessed to have those precious memories together as a family. I am SO thankful that my siblings were able to all be together for my brother's final days. He rallied and enjoyed us being there so much, it was well worth the effort to travel there on very short notice. God put it all together perfectly. No regrets that way!! Yes, the bread was yummy. I had some for breakfast this morning with peanut butter and banana on it. I am glad you discovered the baby bird's tail feathers. You found it!! Good eye!! That song, "Count Your blessings"...we have sung it many times all throughout our lives. It's not just for children in Sunday School! I love to sing that song and remind myself to "count them one by one"...and yes, you got the words just right! Have a blessed and beautiful day...and yes, let us keep counting those blessings. It WILL surprise us what the Lord has done!
DeleteI'm happy that it's May now....one of my MOST favorite months! And it was nice to see the family photos you've shared. You and your sister look SO much alike but I'm sure you hear that all the time. I love your beautiful roses and all the memories you have. We can't help but have sad memories by the time we reach this age. But you handle it all with grace. What a beautiful lady you are and I'm glad we've become friends! Have a good day! Sunshine and nice temps! We're loving it! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteYes, I've always loved May as well. Seems like a transitional month from spring to summer here in Florida, whereas in the north spring is really just getting started with all the flowers, lilacs, apple blossoms, tulips, daffodils, etc. I remember it well...always beautiful especially around Mother's Day. Yes, many people think my sister and I are twins until they see us together in person. As you can see, I am tall and was a red-head, and she is petite and was a brunette. I freckled, she tanned. But somehow as we've aged we've kind of morphed into each other more and more. It's scary sometimes we say the same things at the same time...but there are several years between us, so we are definitely not twins! Thank you for your very kind words to me. I am also glad that we've become friends. I am hoping when this "crisis" is over and we are able to be out and about again that maybe we can plan a meeting somewhere. Would love to visit with you. It seems we have a lot of things in common. Yes...go out and enjoy this beautiful day. We just took our morning walk. It is gorgeous...low humidity, sunshiny and a little cooler. really perfect weather for Florida! (((hugs))) to you too.
DeleteYes, you'll get an AMEN from me! And no, your post wasn't melancholy at all. I enjoyed all the pictures..I could almost smell the perfume of the beautiful red rose, and the sweetness of the magnolia (aren't they majestic?). All your family photos are precious reminders of treasured memories. How nice of you to take the time to share them. Reading Psalms always gives hope and peace, and thank you for your kind wishes.
ReplyDeleteDo take care and have a happy May!
Thank you, Linda. I am so glad you came to visit. I keep thinking I must know you in person, but I can't find any other info on your bio to tell me how. But I love that you visit here and you are always welcome. Yes, that particular rose has a wonderful fragrance. I love it so much. And I also love the fragrance of the magnolia blossoms. I love to bring one inside and enjoy it while it lasts. It will give a pleasant lemony fragrance to the whole room. Thank you for enjoying my family photos. They are very special to me, especially as the years go by and sooner or later the photos will be all we have left. I guess that is why I am always taking pictures everywhere and of everyone! They bring back such happy memories. Have a blessed and happy May too!!
DeleteI loved all the pictures. Good days!! Your coleus looks great! I love that it is still growing so well--mine is too! I cut mine back a few weeks ago and rooted a bunch! Easy peasy! You can do it! Love you!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, so glad you came to "visit". Wish it were in person!!!! So all I need to do is cut the coleus and put it in some water and it will root? Ok, now that it is growing so big and full, I will try to do that. It seems very happy here as long as I keep it watered. Wish you could come visit and bring Art of course! And some Zellwood sweet corn too before it is all gone! Even though I am not supposed to eat corn...I can't resist fresh sweet corn on the cob...Oh well...maybe we can get together by Memorial day??? Have a blessed day and weekend before you go back to work!! :)
DeleteSuch a touching post, Pamela, especially with the photos and memories of family. How I miss being able to see mine! Tried, but couldn't see the baby bird in the photos. Maybe he will return soon, and you can get another shot at him. And the rain on the roses? Splendid!
ReplyDeleteMay God bless your weekend, too!
The baby bird is very hard to see because all you can see are the tips of his tail feathers, and a little bit of his head, but it blends in with the tree trunk so well you really have to look very hard. I did see him hopping around out there today, but I was on the phone and didn't have a free hand to take any pictures. Of course by the time I could, he was gone. But he'll be back I am sure. I will keep watching. Glad you enjoyed this, and I pray you will be able to see your family again very soon.
DeleteI loved seeing the Coleus plants. I had forgotten they could be so colorful. I enjoyed seeing your family pictures. That is one way for you to keep those memories close to you and fresh on your heart. Peace and blessings
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cecelia. Yes, I am just learning to appreciate the coleus. It is very interesting and uniquely designed...much like us. Thank you for appreciating the family photos. It is hard for us to remember all of those special times together as we get older, so I am glad to have pictures to help me. Time just seems to be flying by, doesn't it? When I look at those pictures, it is difficult for me to realize that little girl was me. That was SO long ago! Have a blessed and beautiful weekend, my friend.
DeleteIt took me a bit to find the baby bird in the picture, but I did finally. Love that Papa Cardinal, he does look a bit stern, but they are such beautiful birds. Actually Cardinal's are the state bird of Ohio.
ReplyDeleteColeus is such a beautiful plant. Love all the shades of pink.
You family pictures back in the day, remind me so much of my family's pictures. There were 5 of us siblings, 3 girls and 2 boys. Unfortunately we lost a brother too back in November 2014. Then mom passed in July 2015 and Dad in February 2016. I can hardly believe they are gone. You are so right that we need to make memories while we can.
Psalm 139 is one of my favorites.
Hope you have a great weekend Pam!!
Oh Cathy, I am sorry for the losses you have suffered in the not so distant past. Yes, it is very hard to say good bye to our loved ones. When we were young we thought we'd have our parents and siblings forever. It is difficult to think of our family not all being able to be together here again, but one day we will have that grand reunion in heaven, thanks be to Jesus! Yes, life is very short, and we need to never take any of it for granted. Thank you for visiting. Hope you have a blessed weekend.
DeleteOh Pamela, yes I have tears in my eyes right now. Missing those loved ones just does not get any easier. I have to admit that I have times, almost every day when this whole pandemic and all that goes with it, upsets me and brings me down. I know God is in control and that none of this is a surprise to Him. I also know that i am safely held in His hands, but I am human and so those feelings come. Thanks for sharing the beautiful rose and also for sharing your heart. Now if you would cut me a slice of that bread and add a layer of butter to it, I'll be right over.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ruth. I am sorry for the tears, and yet sometimes we need to let them flow. I have found that holding them back only causes harm.Jesus washes our eyes with tears so that we can see better what He is doing and how much He loves us all the time. But yes, we are human, and we hurt and we grieve and we grow weary of things we can't control. And like you said, "none of this is a surprise to Him." I just had a slice of that bread and butter for my evening snack. It probably isn't a good idea before bedtime, but that's what I wanted. I am blaming it on you since you suggested it. LOL. It was good, and I wish you could come on over. I warmed it up just a little and that really made it good. Sorry to tell you that. (((hugs)))
DeleteHere I am, late getting to blogs, but I loved seeing the rose from your Memorial Garden. The bush is doing so well in its new home (as are YOU). I really stopped to think when you said it has been a year since you lost your dear Russell. Time either stands still or passes so fast. You family photos are so precious! Thank you for sharing them with us. And, oh my goodness, that bread looks delicious!! Peace!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Terri. "Better late than never", as they say! Ha ha. Always wonderful to hear from you. I am glad you enjoyed the rose. It is always a delight to me when it blooms, and as you know, I usually celebrate every single rose that comes from it! Thank you for your kind words regarding my brother and the family photos. It's sad when the time comes that all we have left of our family is pictures and memories...but so thankful for them both! And yes, the bread was delicious!! It would remind you of the brown bread that you get at Outback. I could sit and eat the whole loaf if I'm not careful! LOL. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Peace and blessings to you too.
DeleteI wonder what it's like to fish in Heaven.
ReplyDeleteWe have a game called Animal Crossing. You play as a villager and do things like fishing and hunting bugs with a net. You stand on the beach and cast your line out very close to shore, but can sometimes catch Oarfish or Sturgeon or Blue Marlin and even sharks. 😊 Maybe it's like that.
Hmmm, sounds like an interesting idea. (Never heard of that game! BTW) I don't know, but if there IS fishing in heaven, it is in the most beautiful waters ever seen, and somehow God multiplies the fish so there are enough to go around for everyone with plenty left over!! Whatever way it is, it is heavenly!! :) God bless you my friend for imagining with me.
DeleteWonderful post. You covered a lot of ground, so I'm not sure what to comment on. I'll just say two things:
ReplyDelete1) your childhood pictures are especially precious
2) both you and Doris look really good in royal blue. It's a color that looks perfect with your complexions and hair.
Wow! Now I'm speechless! Thank you, Barbara for your kind compliment. Royal blue is a particular favorite of mine, and I think Doris's also. What is really funny is that we often show up at places wearing the same color shirts so often people really do think we must be twins. I don't know how that happens, but it must be something in our "DNA". LOL. Thank you for visiting late last night to two of my posts. You must be playing "catch up". Now I'll go visit your latest post and see where you've been hiding this week! Blessings.
DeleteI betcha that Russell and Matthew are fishing at the best fishing hole they have ever seen. However it works, I believe they are connected in the afterlife. Lots of stuff in your post!! lol Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe. Hugs- Diana
ReplyDeleteThat's such a beautiful rose in honor of your son. I love all your sibling photos, the transitions as you all got older! They're priceless. Your bread, oh my goodness! That looks SO good!
ReplyDeleteThe rose with raindrops is so beautiful. I enjoyed the photos you shared of both your son and your brother. Thank you for the encouraging verses you shared. Oh, I have never made bread, but you have made me hungry for a warm slice with butter! lol
ReplyDelete
