The Branch of Healing

"The Branch of Healing"
by
A. B. Simpson

There is a healing branch that grows
Where every bitter Marah flows;
This is our health-renewing tree.
“I am the Lord that healeth thee.”

There is an old appointed way
For those who hearken and obey;
Above the gate these words we see:
“I am the Lord that healeth thee.”

There is an ordinance that has stood
Since Israel crossed the parted flood;
It stands today for you and me—
“I am the Lord that healeth thee.”

There is a great Physician still

Whose hand has all its ancient skill;

At His command our pains will flee—
“I am the Lord that healeth thee.”

The words to this ancient hymn were written by Rev. Dr. Albert B. Simpson, founder of the Christian & Missionary Alliance, (check the link for more information).

The song is based on the passage in Exodus 15:22-26, just after the children of Israel had crossed the Red Sea on dry land...they had been a part of such a huge miracle from God, and then three days later they found themselves in the wilderness with no water.

Starting at verse 23. "Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter.  Therefore the name of it was called Marah (which means "bitter").
24.  And the people complained against Moses, saying,
"What shall we drink?"
25.  So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree.  When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet.
There He (God) made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them.

26.  and said, "If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians.
For I AM the Lord who heals you."

In my Bible notes regarding verse 25, (The New Scofield Study Bible, NKJV), it explains as follows:

"Israel came to this bitter water while walking in the very path of the Lord's leading, thus indicating that difficult experiences for God's people are educative rather than punitive.  The piece of wood which healed the water should remind the Christian that the cross of Christ can take all the bitterness out of all such experiences  and observe that after trial which is accepted as the Father's will, blessing and growth will follow."

I was praying through my prayer list yesterday, and realized that there are so many dear friends in need of a "Branch of Healing" in their lives right now.  It seems as though the list keeps growing every day.  These are all wonderful, godly, Christian people, who are afflicted with serious illnesses and difficulties.  I can say that in each one that I'm thinking of, they truly love the Lord and trust in His Word. I have not heard one person say, "Why me, Lord?", or complain against the Lord in any way, even though they may be in great pain or distress.  I do believe that our Lord still heals today...and I know He wants to give comfort and strength to all of His children who are suffering. I've discovered that sometimes our physical healing does not happen here on earth...but we are ultimately completely healed when we enter heaven's gates.  In either case, may we keep our eyes focused on the Lord, and trust in that One that provided that Branch of Healing for us on the cross...Jesus..."I Am the Lord who healeth thee!"

  3. Pam, thank you for sharing this post, you are spot on correct--God is still in the business of healing supernaturally today! Many years ago, I was led astray about supernatural healing; I'm so very thankful that I've learned the truth!! (You may find a sermon of mine interesting to listen to/view. Check out the right side bar of my blog and click on "Jesus Still Heals Today").

    Blessings!

    1. I will definitely check that out, Kim. Thank you for your comments. I do know that God is still healing from personal experience...healing takes place in many different ways...mind, spirit, body, and heart. Sometimes God may choose to heal the mind, spirit, and heart, but not the body. But I feel like this body is only temporary anyway...the rest is what is eternal...and that is where the real healing needs to take place. However, when God chooses to heal the body as well, then that is a double blessing and bonus! So thankful for God's healing branch for all.

  4. My prayer list, too, Pamela, seems to grow everyday, especially for those suffering with cancer. Just learned of a woman who lost her life on earth, but who stated, before she died, that she was longing for home.
    Longing for home . . .
    God is not punitive, He is embracing and comforting. He turns bitterness to sweet, discouragement to hope, death into life. Please pray for this sweet woman, Jacqueline, who passed, for her husband, Perry, and sons, Christian, Roman and Max.
    Blessings to you!

    1. I am so sorry to hear of your friend Jacqueline, and yes, I will pray for her husband and family. That is so heartbreaking for them, but a joyous commencement for her, to be finally home! May God give her family comfort and peace in knowing that she is being welcomed into heaven, free from pain, totally healed!

  5. [Please forgive me if my comment shows up twice.... I commented this afternoon but don't see it here, so I think I must have somehow deleted it instead of publishing] I love this statement you found in the Scofield Bible notes (it's worth repeating!): "difficult experiences for God's people are educative rather than punitive". Some of us just keep kicking ourselves about our problems when maybe the Lord is seeking to teach us something we really need to know. This was helpful to read today. Thanks for including it.

    1. Thank you for stopping by twice...although the message only came through once...I'm so glad you mentioned the Scofield note...I almost didn't include it, and then realized that it said exactly what needed to be said...I needed to read it too. Oftentimes we are like the Apostle Paul, "kicking against the goads", when Jesus just wants us to surrender to His comforting, loving, and yes, teaching arms. There is rest in that surrender...and God gives us peace when we finally trust His heart...

  6. Yes indeed He still heals today. Sometimes it's here on earth and sometimes it's in heaven when the healing comes. Pam, my prayer list seems to be running and overflowing. So many hurting people. So many sick. Wonderful post today for me to read Pam. God sure uses you girlfriend in a mighty way. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

    1. Thank you, Cindy. I don't know if we are just getting closer to the Lord's Return or what, but it seems as though so many people are hurting...good Christian people. But I see them thanking God in the midst of their suffering, leading by example for the rest of us...and I give God the glory for these dear ones. Thank you for your kind words.
