Friday Foto Friends: A Step Back in Time

Dear Friday Foto Friends...I am working under a "handicap" this week...as most of you may already know my desktop computer died the other day, and it will be at least a week before I can get another computer...so hubby has graciously given me some free time on his laptop when he's not using it...
I am very grateful...but of course it just isn't the same as my computer with all my favorite things bookmarked and easily accessible.  Especially my photo editor.  I used Picasa, and I tried to download it on his computer only to find out that you can no longer download that program.  So now I must figure out a new photo editor program. All you great photographers please give me some ideas...what program do you use?

Anyway, before the great computer disaster hit we took a lovely ride out into the country so I could take some pictures for this week's edition of Friday Foto Friends.  We journeyed to the little town where our son will be married NEXT WEEKEND! (Yikes!!! Can that really be happening so soon??)
Anywho...we visited the little church where the wedding will take place and had a tour of the sanctuary and fellowship hall. (No pictures taken inside yet...I will save that for the wedding day).  I thought you would enjoy seeing this lovely historic Methodist Church where the wedding will take place.  Our son and his bride to be have been attending there when they can and enjoy the close knit body of believers there...most of whom are old enough to be their parents or older...but they love the people and fellowship as well as the fact that the associate pastor is a friend of our son, so that helps.

This little church is well over 100 years old and has such a quaint antique architecture.

So many older churches like this have disappeared from our communities, replaced by huge modern buildings that hardly resemble a church building at all.  Of course, I know, the church is not the building...it is the people...the Body of Christ...but I still like the old fashioned churches and warm fellowship of these country churches.

Here's the church...Here's the Steeple...
Open the Door and see all the people!!!

Don't you just love this red door?? I do...

This unique log building is actually made from palm tree logs, and is very old...again, more than 100 years old. It currently is just used for storage, but back in the day it was a Boy Scout hut as well as other kinds of classrooms, etc.

After leaving the church we wound around the old downtown and found this old two story store building. It doesn't appear to be currently in use (except for those Jammin Nites?)...but it sure takes me back to a different era. Wish I had the money to fix this old place up...  "PEACE" brother...

This building has been refurbished and restored and is used for meetings, activities and houses a museum.  I hope to go back and explore someday.

And this old train car caboose is in the downtown park.  The only sad thing is it had "no trespassing" signs on it...and of course I was itching to explore...

So this pretty much sums up the old downtown of Interlachen, Florida. There are other lovely old homes scattered throughout the downtown area, but it is primarily a community that is being bypassed by busier roads and businesses away from the downtown.  I hope they will continue to try to preserve their history and keep it alive for future generations.

I hope you've enjoyed this little step back in time with me.  I will post more pictures from this little town after the wedding...and since our son will soon be living there we will have plenty more opportunities to go "explore".

I just wanted to add some thoughts of praise from Psalm 108:1-4

"O God, my heart is steadfast;
I will sing and give praise,
even with my glory.
Awake, lute and harp!
I will awaken the dawn.
I will praise You, O Lord,
among the peoples,
and I will sing praises to You among the nations.
For Your mercy is great above the heavens,
and Your truth reaches to the clouds."

Now let's go explore what our other Friday Foto Friends have been up to this past week over at Deb's place, "Breathing in Grace."   Have a blessed weekend!

  1. I love old churches, especially those made of wood. This one is beautiful and that tree with the moss is just as pretty!

  2. I just popped over here from Sylvia's blog and went back and read several of your posts. I hope you get your new computer up and running soon. Mine died about a year ago and I got a new one with Windows10. Now THAT is a learning experience!!! But, I am pretty used to it now.

I use PicMonkey for photos. It is a really great program and very user friendly. After using it for a couple of years I upgraded to the Royale Picmonkey and that is a one time payment of $30 annually. It gives you tons of options and is faster because there are no ads. It was worth it to me.

I saw the reference about the cups from PA and used to live there and I lived in FL for many years and my heart is still there.....
I am your newest follower and will put you on my sidebar so I don''t miss any posts (I read from there).

    1. Welcome NanaDiana! Always such a treat to meet new folks here and make new friends. thank you for the info on PicMonkey. I will check it out. Also the fact that you went to Windows 10 and survived. That is what I will be having to learn when I get the new computer. I may have to chat with you to learn new stuff as I go. We lived in Clarion, PA, when I was little. Had a farm there. Moved to Florida in 1956, so that was a long time ago. As an adult I have lived in many other places, but we came back home to Florida in 1997 and have been here ever since. This is home, but we miss the change of seasons from places up north...but not the harsh winters. Looking forward to getting to know you...

  3. I love everything about this setting for a wedding and can't wait to see photos of the inside. So exciting! Since I only use pics from my iPhone, I guess I'm not up in editing, although I do crop some of my pics! Haha. I bet you are so excited! Old towns are fun to visit and I like the name of that town.

  4. I too love old churches and the new buildings that don't resemble a church at all do not appeal to me in the least. Nothing built today can ever compare to the charm those older churches had. How lovely that your son will marry in this one and Congratulations to him and his bride-to-be! Hope you get your computer back soon. I am using Picasa still and I think I might be at a loss if I had to switch to a new program. Have a lovely weekend, Pamela.

    Blessings,
    Sandi

  5. What a quaint and lovely church, Pamela! Like you, I love old churches; there's one in my Mom's town of Oxford, Ga, that I'll have to post a photo of soon.
A great photo editor would be Photo Shop Elements 2018. It's on Amazon for $99 - no, not cheap, but permanent on your computer.
    Blessings!

  6. “...it is primarily a community that is being bypassed by busier roads and businesses away from the downtown.”

This actually sounds like a wonderful thing!

    “I will awaken the dawn.”

    I LOVE that.

Congrats on gaining a daughter. :) Can’t wait to see photos from inside the church!

  8. I love those old church buildings too, Pam! I'm sure the inside of the church is as quaint as the outside. I'm so excited for the big wedding day to be here and can't wait to see photos!! I really miss Picasa. It was my favorite too but is now long gone since I had to get a new hard drive. I use Google Photos and PicMonkey. Both are free but neither is as good as Picasa was. Sad, sad, sad!!

  9. I'm so sorry about your computer troubles Pamela! It is so difficult to replace those programs that we are used to. I have Picasa on one computer, and when I tried recently to put it on another computer, like you noticed, it was only the download version. You could also try PicMonkey, I have used them on occasion, but it is an online version as well, and can't be downloaded. Seems everything nowadays, they want it to be on the "cloud". I prefer having a program on my computer. If you have the money to invest in a nice photo editing program, and have a computer to run it, Lightroom is by far the way to go. I don't have it, but many photographers I know do, and love it.

I enjoyed your pictures of the old Methodist Church! Such a quaint lovely building, and how wonderful that there is a congregation there that is making your son and new wife to be feel like family! Will be an exciting time for you coming up :)

    Hugs to you today!

  12. Pam, Sorry to hear about your computer woes. Computers are great...until they stop working or don't work as they should. I'd recommend Apple products--more expensive but I think they have few problems, they have more built-in applications/software, and they are more user friendly. :)

The photos of the old buildings, particularly the old church are amazing. The church reminds me a bit of some of the older UMCs (in smaller communities around me). I'll look forward to seeing more photos of the church from your son's wedding.

    Blessings!

  13. Pam: I love old church buildings. I also know that the church is not the building. But I love to think of simpler times. Maybe, I was born too late.:) I look forward to seeing more of your pictures of the church and of the town.

  14. Awesome images! The church is just fabulous. We have a two-story bar/hotel in just about every little town in New Zealand that your photo reminds me of.
