I'm a day late, but it's still The End of the Year!!
The End of the Year
Welcome to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 in the new year. We wish you a very Happy New Year!
January is named for Janus the two faced god who looked into the past and future. Some believe he was Noah who may have been worshipped by his progeny. He certainly looked into the pre flood world and the new world.
The Anglo Saxons called January Wulfsmoanth meaning Month of the Wolf and the Wolf moon appears in January.
1. January 1, 1892 Ellis Island opened it's doors. Did any of your relations enter the United States through Ellis Island? If not, do you know your family's history?I really don't know about Ellis Island, if any of our family ancestors came that way. I know my paternal Great-Grandfather and his mother and others did migrate from Germany, and I'm not sure what year, but I am quite sure it was before 1892. And I know that my paternal Grandmother's ancestors were also here before then, as one Great-Great-Great Grandfather fought in the Revolutionary War, and her maternal grandfather fought in the Civil War. I have done some family ancestry research, the one most prominently done was about my paternal Grandmother, and I have shared her history
HERE before, "Elva's Story~ A Story of Sacrifice and Love. I especially wanted to remember her again right now as December 27th would have been her 130th birthday, and her story is so very special.
2. January's birth stone is garnet and the flower is the carnation. Do you have favorite gem stones or flowers? My birthstone is
Sapphire (blue), for September, and that is my favorite gemstone. This is the birthstone ring my hubby gave me many years ago...before the Princess Diana ring was so popular! It is a very dark sapphire, so much so that I wasn't sure it was a sapphire until I read the link above about the darker sapphires actually being considered the best! I didn't know that! So now I love it even more! LOL. Really, I love it already because my hubby gave it to me totally by surprise! That is a blessing in itself!
The other ring is my mother's wedding and engagement ring set. I was blessed to be given this by my father right when my mother passed away. He told me to take it off her finger and keep it. Later I was pleased that my other siblings confirmed that it was okay with them that I should keep Mom's rings. So I wear them proudly and thankfully in loving memory of my mother.
Flowers? Well, there are so many I can't name them all. Roses, lilacs, peonies, and simple summer flowers like daisies and sunflowers and zinnias, and so many others. I love most wildflowers too! The Blue Aster is my birthmonth flower (September).
3. January 6 is Epiphany. Many take that day as the final day of the Christmas celebration and take down their decor. What about you?
My family tradition growing up was to always wait until January 6th to take down our tree and decorations, but I always thought it was because January 6th is my mother's birthday! She said they always waited until her birthday to take down the tree, but I don't know if she ever made the connection with it being Epiphany! Maybe she did, but I was too young to understand that. As an adult in our own home, we have often waited until January 6th, but lately I've usually wanted it cleaned up before then, so often it comes down right after New Year's Day. I don't like to do it on the holiday itself, as we may have company or we may be doing something special, so I usually wait until after.
4. There is some scientific evidence that January can set the tone for your entire year. What do you think of this? Do you make resolutions, etc? Do you pick a word of the year or have any traditions like that?
I don't make resolutions as I know that I most likely won't keep them, so why stress myself? However, I have for the past several years selected a "One Word" for the year, and I have seen how God has used that word in my life throughout the year to help me to grow in a certain area of my life, whether spiritual or physical or other. For 2025 my One Word has been "Wisdom". These verses from Proverbs 2:1-11 have been my guide throughout the year:
Proverbs 2:1-11 NLT
The Benefits of Wisdom
2 My child, listen to what I say,
and treasure my commands.
2 Tune your ears to wisdom,
and concentrate on understanding.
3 Cry out for insight,
and ask for understanding.
4 Search for them as you would for silver;
seek them like hidden treasures.
5 Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord,
and you will gain knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord grants wisdom!
From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.
He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.
8 He guards the paths of the just
and protects those who are faithful to him.
9 Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair,
and you will find the right way to go.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will fill you with joy.
11 Wise choices will watch over you.
Understanding will keep you safe.
I have not zeroed in on my new One Word yet for this year, but hopefully by tomorrow I will have a better idea of what it might be. However, I normally do not reveal it until January 1st. Right now I am still praying about it. I do believe the Lord will help me discover it between now and then.

Here's some other good thoughts from Isaiah the Prophet as we approach the New Year...
Isaiah 43:18-19 NKJV
18 “Do not remember the former things,
Nor consider the things of old.
19 Behold, I will do a new thing,
Now it shall spring forth;
Shall you not know it?
I will even make a road in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert."
On another note...last night we celebrated our sweet Daughter in love's birthday. They came over and made homemade pizzas (no picture of that, however), and then we had birthday cake and ice cream. Rose is such a sweet sweet person, and she is such a wonderful blessing to our family. Here's a few pictures of the celebration:
I changed the table decor from Christmas to birthday in her honor:
We always take pictures of people blowing out their candles! That's a family tradition!
Rose loves to work in her garden, and so she needed some new gloves. They actually have roses on them...
And she loves to feed the birds and needed a new bird feeder that was somewhat squirrel proof. Time will tell...and who doesn't love a soft new cozy blanket...especially when it dipped down to freezing last night?
All in all it was a lovely little family party. Hubby was feeling well enough to join us but still has a bit of a cough, so he had to stay away a distance...and I am mostly better and thankful for that...
Okay, now we are ready to begin the big festivities of seeing in the New Year, right here from our couch...well, most likely from our bed because we never stay up that late! So so long 2025, and we will see you all next year!!
Numbers 6:24-26 NKJV
24 “The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;
26 The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
And give you peace.” ’
I do believe that how we start the year sets the tone for the remainder of the year...at least in my life. lol. Love the pictures of Rose and her rose-covered gardening gloves. I hope you have a wondeful, blessed 2026. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI definitely think it helps to start with a positive outlook and attitude, but be prepared for anything. No matter what, God will see us through it. Happy New Year to you and yours. (((HUGS)))
DeleteHappy new year. Am loving being in Indiana and out of Florida lol. Miss my sweet Florida family. I have chosen a word for the new year that I have chosen often. Believe…despite my health and all, I am a happy person. I believe things get better. Keep writing. Keep us informed about your sweet family. Your best gift was the manger scene made by your darling son. A treasure. So is Rose. And your other son. You are a blessed woman. I enjoy your positive comments. Brenda. (My birthday is September)
ReplyDeleteHi Brenda! I am happy you are enjoying being in Indiana as opposed to Florida. I know, it's too bad we can't always have all of our family together in one place. That's always been the tough thing for me to deal with as well, but we make the best of wherever we are and try our best to stay in touch with everyone. Thank you for your kind comments. It's always good to hear from you. May God bless you richly in 2026.
DeleteOops…and your darling husband…Brenda
ReplyDeleteI don't think it matters how your start or end a year....just live each day in the joy of His presence. I don't mean to be pessimistic but for the last 5 years, I'd say I hope this year will be better and then when it isn't, humanly speaking, it opens an ever widening crack for discouragement! I will give thanks for the small blessings along the way and rely on Him even when the bottom falls out of my day.
ReplyDeleteI so agree with your first statement. And I know, sometimes we start out ready and raring to go in a very positive way, and then things happen way beyond our control and our faith is definitely put to the test. But God, in His love and mercy, is always there to pick us up and carry us through all the rough places and give us hope and grace and mercy along the way. Yes, we give thanks for the small blessings and trust Him for the big stuff. He will never leave us nor forsake us, of that we can be sure! I pray your 2026 will be a year of peace and the kind of joy that only God can truly give us. (((HUGS)))
DeleteFirst of all, below freezing? how did Blackie fair in that cold? I love the expression on DIL face while holding the cake, just love it. She looks so happy and all three were perfect gifts.. Happy Birthday Rose.. the green deer on the table is like my two, but mine are clear not green. they are at the top of my favorite list.
ReplyDeleteHope hubby gets better and better each day... I do not see the January sets the tone for the year. good, bad and ugly can happen at any time on any day in every year... and its usually the unexpected. all we can do is TRY to take things one day at a time and roll with whatever it is and thank the Lord when its a good thing and not an ugly.
It got down to 32. I was all set to bring Blackie inside, but he didn't seem to want to do that, so he stayed out on the porch with his warming mat on his chair all night, and that seems to keep him warm enough to be comfortable. He's still out there on it now, and it's all the way up to 54. He seems happy and content, so that's all that matters. If it dips lower than 32, I'm going to bring him in regardless. Hubby even let me buy a litter box and some litter to be prepared just in case, and we'll put him in the guest bathroom. The green deer was a Christmas gift from one of my sweet blogging friends. I love the green color, and it was perfect for the tablecloth, etc. for Rose's birthday. And yes, we do take things as they happen and trust the Lord to get us through. He never fails us, even when things are a bit challenging. I know you are experiencing that these days for sure. I hope you are all doing well. Have a blessed New Year. God is with us.
DeleteHappy Birthday to Rose! We all could us a Rose like her in our lives. She is definitely a precious blessing to your family. I love how you decorated the table for her. That fixture in the center with the cupcakes inside, the glittery confetti -- it is soooo pretty!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Barbara. Yes, Rose is a gift to our family from God. There is no doubt of that in my mind, and I told her so last night. (I've probably told her that quite often in the past 8 years!). I love the cupcake decoration too. It was a gift from my sister in law a few years ago, and it actually has a little teapot on top of the cakes. It's a favorite decoration for birthdays and tea parties! Happy New Year to you and Gary!!
DeleteHi Pamela, Happy Birthday to Rose! I enjoyed your post and want to wish you and your family a Happy New Year!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susan. Happy New Year to you and yours as well!!!
DeleteLove your post today, Pam. I don't make resolutions either mainly because I start out all gung ho and soon it's just a memory.Still working on my Word for the year. It may be 2 words...Be Content ... Learning to accept each day and what it brings to me.
ReplyDeleteLove the photos of your Darling Rose. She is such a prize to have in your family. I feel that way too about my 2 Daughters in Love.
I have to admit that your story about your rings triggered memories in me.
When my mother passed away I got her wedding rings. When our younger son was going to get married and money was tight I gave his grandma's rings to him as an heirloom for his soon to be wife. She never wore them and their marriage dissolved after 17 chaotic years. It was not a good match to begin with and I think she sold the rings to get some "mad" money. Sometimes you just have to Let Somethings Go ...
I just praise the Lord that He does repair the Years of the Locust and 8 years ago Mark found his wonderful wife. We thank the Lord for her every day.
God is so Good
Sue
How beautiful those rings, Pam. More so, the sentiment behind them. I'm not a big fan of jewelry, but my own mother's wedding set -- and a ruby ring given to me by my daddy are more than priceless.
ReplyDeleteYou're so good about changing table top! While I'm usually inclined to wait until the Epiphany, the last few days have found me picking up random articles, trying to decide what to put in their place. (Like I can't remember what it looked like two months ago? LOL) Rose's smile just blesses my heart. What a joy it must be having her as your bonus daughter. Happy birthday blessings to Rose!
I never thought about January setting the tone for the year but you may be right.
ReplyDeleteI love those rings Pam. Very nice.
Happy birthday to Rose.
Happy New Year.
