Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!

Wednesday Treasures
Happy Wednesday Morning! "Hump Day"...Getting over the hump of this week and rushing through May way too quickly. Seems like May always flies by and before you know it, school is out, and we are plunged into those long lazy crazy days of summer!
Well, for "Colt", our young Sand Hill Crane, these days are just flying by. Some of you have asked me how he's doing, so here's a few pictures so you can see for yourself:
I have been told that the young crane's wings should be ready to fly by the time he is about 65-75 days old. I don't know exactly what day he was born, but according to THIS POST WHEN I FIRST SAW HIM on April 2nd, we know that he has to be at least about 6 weeks old by now, which would be about 45 days? So, maybe 20 more days or so...I guess I need to keep track so we can tell when he's ready to fly! I don't want to miss it!
Every day he gets taller and stronger, and his wing feathers are much more pronounced.
He spends a lot of time preening and scratching and flexing his wings, but I never can seem to get a good picture of him actually flapping them. It happens too quickly.
But here below he spent a long time poking around at his tail feathers...it's like he's discovering that he's got more and more stuff there to carry around with him and like any young teen growing whiskers, he's quite fascinated with the new growth. Or else he just has a lot of mites making him itch...
It must be nice to have such a long flexible neck and beak that can get to that itch!
Yesterday I did see him flap his wings, but it was through the window and it isn't quite as clear:
So anyway, that is the update on "Colt" for now. They remain very active in our yard most every day, poking around for grubs and worms and whatever else they like to eat, so every day is a treat and a treasure for us to watch. I'll try to keep you updated as Colt makes more progress.
Now moving right along:
Early morning picture of our sweet Bob-Tailed Cardinal with the sunshine reflecting off his belly making him look golden.
And then I saw him over under the other bird feeder with this female Cardinal, and I thought he must have a girlfriend...
But then I realized the other one must be a juvenile Cardinal and he is feeding her. So maybe he's the daddy?
Or else they are kissing. Either way, it's sweet.
You know me, I rejoice over every blossom in my garden. Well, the Rose of Sharon bush is very special. It is one of the plants we brought with us when we moved to this house from our previous home and from the Memorial Garden we had there. After our son passed away on May 25th of 2014, we established a Memorial Garden there, and our daughter in law was down with us for our son's Memorial Service and she helped me pick out some plants for the garden. This was one that she wanted to be there in particular. And so when we moved away from that house in 2019 I dug it up, along with the special rose bush, and brought them with us. It stayed in a pot for another year until we finally got it planted in this new "Secret Memorial Garden", and so now every time it begins to bloom again we celebrate:
This is a double blossom. I love that this bush has started blooming in time for the 8th anniversary of our son's passing on May 25th. Yes, these are some of my "treasures".
If you saw this picture on my Mother's Day post a few days ago, you probably wondered about that plant on the table. It is an arrangement of hyacinth bulbs about to bloom:
Well, I've been monitoring its progress each day:
And here it is now:
It is so lovely, and was a gift from Benton and Rose. I am enjoying it out on the back porch because the hyacinth fragrance is a bit too strong for me in the house. But I can see it and enjoy it here just as well.
Another "treasure".
And last but certainly not least, here's "Lily Grace", waiting for an adventure. I'm afraid I've been a bit lax in providing adventures for Lily lately. My apologies to her many fans. Anyway, we have plans to plant a butterfly garden and she is going to help me. It won't be today because I have a UMW meeting at church this morning...and by afternoon it is too hot to work in the yard. Maybe this evening.
Anyway, we plan to include these cute little stones in the garden...to make it a place of "Sunshine, Laughter & Friends", who are always welcome. And a place of "Hope, Peace, and a place to Believe" in all the good things God wants to grow in us.
Here's some final thoughts for the day:
(devotional taken from "Choose Grace", "3-minute devotions for women")
Yes, like a garden, our heart is a lovely dwelling place where God abides. When we keep the garden of our heart well watered with God's Word, we will grow into a lovely place, "filled with the grace of the almighty God."
What a lovely thought for this day.
I hope you are taking care of the treasures in your garden-heart today!
Have a blessed and beautiful day my friends.

I love seeing the little crane. I hope you get to see him fly. The garden is such a good idea. Honestly, one of the best ideas ever. Hyacinths do have a strong scent. I too am a little to sensitive to scents.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sandy. I do hope I get to see him fly too, but then I will miss him when he flies away. I guess that is what they call the empty nest syndrome. Maybe the bluebirds will come back and start a new family again, and that will fill the void. God always supplies something beautiful to enjoy if we just keep our eyes open!! Thank you for visiting today. Always a pleasure to hear from you.
DeleteNo doubt about it, your Colt warms my heart! That image of the cardinal bathed in sunshine may be my new favorite. If memory serves, aren't there canaries with that red and gold coloring. We always had one -- every one named 'Bobby' (lol) - but they were traditional yellow. Did you find your garden stones at the Dollar store? One of the gals in our Bible study passed out hanging ones that look like yours -- I chose the yellow and orange one that says, "Sunshine, laughter and friends are always welcome."
ReplyDeleteThese stones came from the Dollar Tree, but I think the Dollar General may have some too. I didn't see a hanging one, now I want one. LOL. They are sweet, aren't they? When I was younger I probably would have said they were tacky, but now I am learning to appreciate the beauty in so many sweet things. I am trying to figure out the best way to display them in the garden so they don't get lost or broken or covered up with grass or weeds. I guess I may have to actually do some real gardening. LOL. I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures today. God is good, isn't HE?
DeleteThanks for the update on Colt. He's getting so bit. Also love the pictures of the cardinal and your beautiful flowers and stones. Have a great day Pam.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cathy. He is getting big! I will miss him when he flies away someday. They all keep us so entertained. I love watching God's great nature kingdom here. We are blessed!!
DeleteYou have a grandcrane! 😊
ReplyDelete"When we keep the garden of our heart well watered with God's Word..."
❤️ Amen.
Ha ha! yes, I guess I do have a "grandcrane". LOL. He has been such fun to watch growing and imitating his parents as he learns to hunt for his own food. They are really all fun to watch and we are blessed to be able to do so with a front row seat. And I am glad you liked that quote...isn't it true? Have a blessed day.
DeleteColt is adorable and I bet he will be missed when he flies the coop. Or will he still return as this is where he started? It's awesome to live in an area where you can see God's creation - daily. I enjoy our birds as well. The Cardinal is handsome with his golden chest. The males are so much more colorful than the females. Not in all species of birds. I used to raise the white doves and could never tell the difference between the males and the females, until I saw them mating and of course when the female laid her eggs. I've not noticed much difference in bald eagles either.
ReplyDeleteYour hyacinth plant is lovely. I can't do that indoors, due to Susie being a plant destroyer. She even eats fake plants, the little booger.
Thank you, Debby. Yes, I am sure we will miss seeing Colt and the family when they decide to take off. I expect the parents will come back here again as they seem to gravitate back to the same nesting area. But Colt will eventually have to leave them and start his own courtship and family. I wish I could put a band on him so I would know if he came back. Same as for the geese we had. But I will just enjoy whoever God sends us. Thank you for visiting. Hope you are having a great week.
DeleteI love your garden stones. They speak of peace and relaxation. We have bypassed spring and went directly to summer. It was 90* here yesterday. "Colt" looks less like a baby and more like an adult each time I see him. Peace and blessings.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cecelia. I love the little stones too. I am trying to figure out the best way the use them so they look pretty in the ground and around the flowers. I may need Lily Grace to give me some ideas. LOL. Oh, my! We are having nicer cooler weather than you! It's been in the low 60's and only up to 80 this week, with steady breezes. But we do need rain. But I'm not complaining. It's been lovely. I know it won't last so I will enjoy it while I can. Peace and blessings to you too. I'm glad you are feeling better.
DeleteWhere has this month gone?? It'll be Fall again before we know it.
ReplyDeleteAll the pictures are great. I'm kinda partial to the Cardinals, though. *lol*
I want the stones too! Love it. And I'm glad that Colt is progressing so nicely. He probably will be flying away in a month or so.
This Marxist economy is just killin' us. Our dryer needs replacing and the dishwasher quit working properly. I've decided not to replace the dishwasher. (I'll blog about what we're gonna do with the empty space.) I can live without it but not living without a dryer. Steve found (I hope) and good used dryer for a fraction of the cost at a local retailer. It even has a 90 day warranty! Good deal. They'll deliver it Monday and take away the old stuff. I hope that's all that needs replacing for awhile.
Hope you're feeling well and enjoying the warm weather.
Blessings.
Sparky xx
Oh, I am sorry about your dryer and dishwasher. I totally understand how that goes. Yes, when our DW broke down we decided not to replace it. We really weren't using it that much anyway as we have a routine of washing the dishes as we use them each meal. It only helps when we have a crowd for dinner, but even then the kids or others always pitch in and help so it's not so bad. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you will do with the DW space. So far I've left ours open, but since I don't think we will ever replace the DW, we ought to make better use of the space. Can't wait for your ideas. Oh, the little stones came from the Dollar Tree...cheap but fun. My blogging friend Debbi got me started with the first two when she came to visit, and now I want them all. LOL. Yes, I understand your partiality to the Cardinals. I do think of you when I see them now. We are enjoying this weather although we need rain. But it really has been quite lovely this week. cooler and drier and breezy. but we need rain.
DeleteTake care my friend. (((hugs)))
I had a memorial garden in WV…none at condo…in my mind here…I had a little figure for my. MOther…a cross for grandmother…little animals for some others…rose bush and flowers…a garden flag…stones around it…a circle for the symbol of completeness…I sat on porch listening to my little water feature and prayed as I looked at that memory special place…Love your blog
ReplyDeleteThank you, Brenda. So you understand the significance of the memorial garden. It is a very peaceful place to remind us of the loved ones gone on to heaven. Especially since, for our son, his actual gravesite is in Maine, so we are unable to ever really visit there or put flowers on his grave. This way the flowers grow for us to remind us of him. It's very special to me. At our last house we also had a little water fountain, but here it was too complicated as the power source was too far away, although now I know I could get a solar one. But we are right beside the pond, so that is plenty of water to enjoy. Thank you for sharing the memories of your garden. It really sounds like it was a lovely place. (((hugs)))
DeleteI totally understand…the pain of losing a child must be unbearable.prayers. It is your Me place or Us place a deal put loved ones…
DeleteNot sure why my reply said anonymous...that is happening.
DeleteThe update on "Colt" the young crane was great to read about and see, Pam. The young ones do grow so fast in both the human and animal worlds. Hyacinths are one of my favorite spring flowers especially because of their scent, which hopefully won't be too overpowering.
ReplyDeleteThank you for popping in for a visit. Yes, Colt is growing by leaps and bounds and I fear he may fly away before we know it! I wish I was able to put a band on him somehow so I would know when he comes back to visit later as an adult. They all look the same after they mature, so it is hard to tell them apart. I am enjoying the hyacinth on the back porch. It is even prettier today.
DeleteColt is really growing and looking much more mature. Yes, a long neck like that would at times be good. My arms don't always want to bend at the right place to reach that one stubborn itchy spot. Suppose that comes with age.
ReplyDeleteYes, that "stubborn itchy spot" gets further and further away as we age...with my frozen shoulder issues I have had to resort to using a back scratcher and a back brush when showering to reach those spots. yes, that long neck would be nice, but I guess we'd look kind of funny. LOL. I guess I'll keep the neck I've got and be thankful I've got it! LOL. Have a blessed and wonderful day!!
DeletePam, I just read your blog. What a wonderful way to share the blessings of your backyard. The picture of Lilly Grace, she didn’t look as scary as I remember her! I look forward to reading this again. You may have to show me how to find it!😳💚
ReplyDeleteOh my dear Mary! what a treat to find you here!! And Lily Grace sends her love. She's happy you finally see the beauty in her! :) Oh, I hope you will go back to the previous couple of posts and see the one about the May Fellowship day too. Welcome to my world...this is where I hang out most of the time! God bless you dear friend!!! Please come again!
DeleteThe colt is growing up so fast!! How fun to watch the process happen right in front of you! That bobbed cardinal is so pretty. Glad he escaped from whatever tried to gobble him up! Lily's stones are so pretty! Love & hugs!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Terri! Yes, Colt is growing by leaps and bounds. I suppose soon he will fly away with his parents and we won't see him anymore, unless they decide to hang around this summer. Time will tell. And yes, I shudder to think what Mr. Cardinal escaped, but I'm so glad he did! Lily sends her love. She says that Mommie is getting lazy and not taking her for many adventures anymore. So I'd better get with the program. LOL.
DeleteWhat a precious post. Love seeing all the wildlife and of coruse, birds. Too sweet! Lily GRace is happy, I love her pose today. Hope you are doing well. Take caremy friend and thank you for prayers and kindness too. HUGS & LOVE
ReplyDeleteThank you Anne. I'm so glad you stopped by for a visit. We do enjoy watching the birds here. They keep us quite well entertained! And Lily Grace does her part to keep us hopping as well. If I don't get busy and help her plant that garden I'm going to be in trouble! LOL. Have a blessed and wonderful day my friend.
DeleteColt does look like a gangly teen, Pamela - so cute! Your flowers are absolutely lovely, too, and I love that the ones you brought from your old home have flourished. How encouraging is that? Looking forward to hearing about the wild flowers you will soon be planting, especially if they will attract butterflies. There was a huge Lantana at my parents' home and butterflies abounded there. Virginia loved seeing them when she was a little girl.
ReplyDeleteBlessings, my friend!
Not sure I my comment will post or not, since Blogger and I seem to be on the outs right now.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are gorgeous as usual. Colt has changed dramatically from your first photo of him.
Have a great and beautiful day!
OH wow Colt is really growing, that bobtail cardinal is adorable and love how they feed and kiss each other so cute. I havent gotten to do to many adventures with Sarah, and the rest of my babies :( I am keeping the twins 3 days a week for now. I am having shoulder surgery again the end of June I have new post up.
ReplyDeleteYou have a blessed and beautiful day as well!
