Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!
What Do You See Outside YOUR Open Window Today?

Friday Foto Friends a little late...
Today was a wonderful day!! Not only was it much cooler and breezy and no rain, but my sister and her hubby traveled two hours to come and have lunch and celebrate their birthdays with us!
Yes, you read that right. To celebrate their birthdays with us. Yes, they were both born on the same day, but two years apart. Their birthdays were earlier this week, but this was the soonest we could get together, and sadly, we couldn't have a big family party like we've always tried to do in the past, but it was just the four of us this time.
We enjoyed some time on the back porch after lunch, watching the birds and activity around Still Waters Pond. It was delightful, but chilly enough for me to put my sweater on! Hubby too:
Then after our lunch had settled enough and we were getting too chilled on the porch (I know you northerners are laughing at us...yes, it was in the 60's here, but very very windy, which made it feel a lot cooler! Especially out by the pond), anyway, we came back inside to sing Happy Birthday to them and have cake and ice cream and strawberries!
Yes, there are two cakes. My sister always gets an Angel Food Cake, and my BIL always wants a Coconut Cake. So I got up at 6:00 a.m. and got busy and baked both cakes. (No wonder I am sitting here now at 9:00 p.m. with my eyelids drooping and I'm thinking I may have to finish this post tomorrow and go to bed. LOL)
Anyway, we sang Happy Birthday to them...
And then there was the "big blow", which somehow my sister managed to evade having her picture taken with her cheeks puffed out blowing out her candles...how did she do that??? She knows it's a family tradition to have your picture taken like that!
Oh well, here she is with her Angel Food Cake, and those flowers in the middle are tulips. The tradition is that our mother always baked an Angel Food cake for her and put a little vase of Daffodils in the center, because when we were little we lived in Pennsylvania and they had daffodils then in April. But then we moved to Florida when we were still kind of little, and we could no longer find daffodils because they don't grow here. After a while the grocery stores started having little pots of them around Easter, and since my sister's birthday has always been close to Easter, we usually could manage to find some Daffodils in a pot somewhere. But not this year! They seemed to come out earlier this year, back in March, and no one had any available this week! I know because I checked everywhere!
So yellow tulips had to suffice!
And my BIL has always had a coconut cake, that usually my sister baked for him, but this time I did it. He said it was good.
He also wanted strawberries on his ice cream in a different bowl, so there you go...we aim to please here at this birthday party house! LOL.
Now in my post yesterday HERE, I mentioned something about buying some Daylilies to use for something special. Well, if you looked at that picture yesterday:
You could see how pretty the daylilies were. My thought was they kind of resembled daffodils and I could use those blossoms for the cake today. However, what I didn't take into consideration was that daylilies only bloom for a day!
And so today the blossoms were closed up and not so pretty. So that's why I used the tulips instead. But I gave my sister one of the daylily plants for a gift so she could plant it. She's the one with the green thumb in the family, as I may have told you before. Anything with a flower on it she knows what to do.
But even people who can grow real flowers sometimes still appreciate fake ones, and in this case, this is a good example. I found this lovely spring wreath at our son and DIL's store (Dixie Cottage in St. Augustine) and bought it for my sister's birthday present.
She loved it, as you can see.
We had a great visit and laughed and talked and enjoyed being together. We do not take these times for granted, because we are not getting any younger, and we've already lost our parents and one brother. We have another older brother still living up in N.C. , and we cherish our few and far between times together. So any chance we can get together to celebrate LIFE, we do it!
Now, this morning I happened to look out on our front porch, and what did I see?
One of those squirrels out there apparently kneeling in prayer...or at least that's what it looked like to me!
He may have been praying that I would go put some more birdseed in the birdfeeder that he and his 8 brothers and sisters keep emptying every time I fill it within an hour or two after filling it...I don't know,
but I just admit he is awfully cute.
On the other hand, maybe he is praying for our country, kneeling there beside our American Flag. We certainly do need the prayers...
While sitting on the back porch with the family we watched Mr. and Mrs. Bluebird come and go, feeding the babies in the birdhouse. Here you see them both, waiting for us to leave before they will go inside the house...but soon they just went ahead and went in because the babies were hungry and we weren't moving fast enough.
Not sure I'd want to be a green grasshopper or bug right now here in my neighborhood!
Well friends, it is getting late and tomorrow is another day. We are having a pot-luck lunch at our church tomorrow, so I will be up cooking again in the morning. Making meatloaf because ground beef was on sale this past week so I can afford it right now. It will be a wonderful time together. We call it an "Agape Lunch", which stands for the unconditional, selfless, sacrificial love of God and for our fellow man. It is a time of fellowship and thankfulness for all that God has done for us.
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
John 3:16
Amen.
Have a blessed Palm Sunday weekend.

I know the birthday celebration was wonderful. You and your sister look very much alike!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Anne. It was really wonderful. and yes, people tell us that we look alike all the time, but we don't really think so. My sister is petite and used to be a brunette, but now her hair looks a lot like mine. I am tall and was a redhead and freckled, but my hair has faded and changed so it doesn't look red anymore, so somehow over the years we have both "morphed" so that we look more like each other. We do find that we do a lot of things alike and we get a good laugh about it. We are thankful to still have each other. Thank you for visiting!! I hope you are having a good weekend. Blessings xoxo
DeleteIf those numbers on the cake are true, and I am skeptical, both your sister and her husband are doing them proud. I love that you sisters look so much alike. One can believe that you are from the same family. 😊 Glad that you were able to get together to celebrate. The cakes are lovely and the flower wreath is beautiful. No wonder your sister loves it! (I don't sit out in 60° weather with a breeze either. It sounds chilly to me.)
ReplyDeleteThe numbers are true!! We are blessed in our family with good genes and good health and God's grace. Very very thankful! Thank you for your kind words. And yes, I'm glad you agree that even 60 degrees with a breeze is chilly. It was, and is still today. But the sun is shining and it is beautiful, so we are thankful! Hope you are having a wonderful weekend. Is it warming up some yet?? I hope so!
DeleteIt’s nice you and your sister are still close. Those cakes look good. Enjoy your potluck and fellowship today.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, we are blessed to be able to get together for holidays and birthdays, etc. We live about 2 hours apart, and sometimes we meet 1/2 way at a restaurant, but I was happy they were willing to drive all the way here yesterday. We had a good time watching the birds, etc. and just relaxing. God is Good. My meatloaf is in the oven and smells good. I just hope it gets done on time. I got it in a bit later than I'd planned! Gotta leave in about 25 minutes, and it still has about that much time to cook! LOL. At least it will be hot and fresh! LOL.
DeleteYou girls are so cute! That was really a sweet gesture, baking them each their favorite cake. No one's done that for me since I was 16. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI just looked at the clock and thought your Agape lunch is probably in full swing. Meatloaf's one of our all-time favorites; maybe I need to resurrect it before the weather gets too hot to turn on the oven.
Thank you, Myra! You are so sweet. I am sorry that no one has baked a cake for you since you were 16. Please, let me know when you will be in Florida and I will bake you a cake! I am NOT a fancy cake baker. I don't decorate or do exotic things, except maybe put daffodils or tulips in a little vase in the center of an Angel Food Cake! LOL. But it's the thought that counts! Remember the little song, "If I knew you were coming I'd a baked a cake..." ? So let me know when you are coming, and I'll bake a cake! LOL. And yes our Agape lunch started at 12:00. AT 11:45 I was panicking because the meatloaf was not quite done. I had to turn up the heat of the oven, cut the meatloaf in half and try to get it done quickly. Thankfully we only live about 5 minutes from the church. At 11:55 I determined it was done and we threw it in the car and drove like crazy to get to the church on time. The good news was, not only were we one time, but nearly everyone there was so happy to see a meatloaf! There was not a crumb left, and everyone who ate a piece went out of their way to tell me how good it was!!! I was flabbergasted! My meat loaf is pretty plain if you ask me. But I guess it was just what people were hungry for! LOL. Who'da thunk it? LOL. It was a great day, but no leftovers for sandwiches! LOL.
DeleteThat squirrel is praying alright--- he's praying you take down the new baffle!! Ha ha LOL I'm so glad your sister and hubby got to come!!--yall are adorable and those cakes turned out so pretty Pam--- you are good at cakes. Tell your sister she don't look 78! And the tulips worked just fine. It was nice and cool here yesterday too--- put on a flannel shirt for our walk! Pretty much the same today-- so Nice to be outside
ReplyDeleteMy sister will be happy to hear that she doesn't look 78 because she is 76! LOL. Her "6" candle is partially hidden by the tulip. Her hubby is 78, however. Thank you for the kind words. I don't do fancy cakes, but adding a little vase of flowers makes an ordinary cake look fancy! The credit goes to my mother for always doing this! Yes, it is still quite cool and windy here today as well. I've had my flannel shirt on most of the day! Love to you dear friend.
DeletePs when do you get your new glasses and did you pick out a pair?
ReplyDeleteI think my new glasses will be ready in about 3 weeks. Yes I picked out a pair. I can't get over how expensive new glasses are. I didn't get anything fancy. I'll show you when they arrive!
DeleteWhat a wonderful birthday celebration, Pamela! Yes, as we get older, we treasure even more the times we spend with family; that sentiment was expressed in my last blog post. I'm so glad you all could get together for a meaningful visit.
ReplyDeleteAnd I must say, that squirrel really does look like he's praying! Even in nature, God reminds us that He alone is worthy of our praise and worship.
Blessings!
Yes, we do treasure our times with family more and more every year. As we get older we realize just how fleeting our time here on earth is, and we should make every moment and opportunity to be together count. Oh, I knew you'd love the squirrel! He must be "Racer"! Yes, God reminds of His amazing love every day if we just look for it. Thank you so much!! Blessings to you too.
DeleteI enjoy your ingenuity with the tulips. I'm you had a great time celebrating the birthdays. I would trade our weather for yours anytime you care to switch. 60's sound wonderful. Peace and blessings to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cecelia. Yes, we did have a great time together and we are so thankful for that opportunity! God has been very gracious to us. And yes, I know I should not complain about our weather, and I really am not. The temperatures have been a welcome change from the 80's were getting last week. It's cool and very breezy again today. I had to come back inside from the porch when I tried to go out and sit for a few minutes. I almost got blown away! LOL. I hope you are having a blessed and beautiful day.
DeleteThe photos are lovely. Happy Birthday to both of them! Looks like it was a great day. I love the wreath that you bought your sister. I also enjoyed seeing the squirrel.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun birthday celebration with not one, but TWO cakes! Yum! The tulips are beautiful! We aren't having our usual monthly potluck at church tomorrow because Lakeland is celebrating Sun n Fun Fly-in and there is a party at the airport that lots of people attend. Not me. That squirrel does look like it is praying! Have a blessed Sunday! xo
ReplyDeleteLooking at and reading about your birthday celebrations, makes me want to head your way and celebrate my birthday there. Seeing I’m the oldest in the family, no one wants to make a cake for me. Boo hoo.
ReplyDeleteHow nice to have your sister and her husband celebrating with you. Your sister is lovely and looks a lot like you ❤️My sister and her husband are coming to visit us in June . It’s quite a drive from northern MI where they are. I sure wish they lived closer I miss my sister it be nice to see her
ReplyDeleteThat squirrel does look like it’s praying, very cute
