Baffled!

If you have ever dealt with squirrels constantly raiding your birdfeeders before, you will know how frustrating that can be!  We've had up to five squirrels in the yard at the same time, each vying for his/her turn on digging out the choicest seeds from the birdfeeder and hogging all the good ones, leaving only the dregs for the birds.  Lately even the birds have been taking revenge.  Although it is funny that the Bluebirds do not even visit the birdfeeder or eat from it, they do NOT like the squirrels invading their territory near the birdhouse, and so they have been dive-bombing the squirrels every time they are on the bird feeder.  It's been quite comical to watch.

However, comical or not, we've gotten tired of paying for expensive birdseed for the BIRDS, only to have the squirrels totally pig out on them and not giving the birds a chance.  Now don't get me wrong, I know that squirrels are God's creatures too and that they need to eat, but around here where we live they have PLENTY of natural food to eat. We have  oak trees with acorns out the wazoo, and holly berries in the trees, and young pine cones, which they also love to chew up and spit out the core. There is more than enough food for the squirrels and they really do NOT need to eat the birdseed from the feeder.
So, that being said, we finally splurged and bought a "baffle" to put on the bird feeder pole.

That's that black metal coolie hat looking thing above.  It sits on a little bracket that holds it up on the pole, but it also allows it to tilt and swivel so that the squirrel SHOULD not be able to get a footing on it to reach the bird feeder.

It was quite comical watching the squirrel above, calculating and considering just how he might get up that pole and around and over that new thing to get to his beloved birdseed.  Try as he might, he could NOT figure it out (yet).

If you look in the above picture, you can just barely see his tail sticking out from under the baffle, just before he had to slide back down the pole to the ground.  He was definitely baffled.

And so he went and sat on the birdbath and consulted with his "idol", Bobby the Squirrel, asking the wise cement squirrel what he should do.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bluebird sat up on his perching pole and watched the shenanigans, and I do believe I could hear him chuckling as we watched Mr. Squirrel try over and over again unsuccessfully to reach that birdfeeder.

Even Mrs. Bluebird stuck her head out of the house to see what the commotion was all about!

Well, all's well that ends well.

I know you can't really see it, but there is another bird feeder in the "Secret Garden" that hasn't been "baffled". (yet).  So the squirrels do still have someplace to get their favorite sunflower seeds. I'm not totally inhumane.

So, what else is new?

This morning hubby and I went for our usual morning walk, and it was a little bit chillier than we thought. So we both bundled up in our hoodies, and then I realized that we were "twins", so of course a selfie was in order! LOL.    Aren't we just so funny?

And of course I needed to take some pictures of things that are developing since it is spring.
Do you know what these flowers are?

They are the flower of the "paw-paw" fruit!. Click HERE for a previous post that has a picture of them when they are ripe.  These bushes are showing up all through the woods right now, and by summer or early fall they will have fruit on them that the critters will enjoy.

And I had to check out the wild plum trees scattered throughout the woods. They are finally developing some wild plums!  The only problem is, by the time they are ripe enough to do something with, the birds have already gotten them or they have dropped to the ground. They are quite tart when ripe, so not really like a "real plum".

But I was very happy to see so many different trees are loaded with fruit this year. Last year there were hardly any.

After we finished our walk we headed to the local flea market. Sometimes there are good things and sometime there aren't. Today was my lucky day!  I scored this beautiful real wicker chair for a "song", including the cushion.

It joins my other wicker chairs on the back porch. Mine are the "plastic" kind of wicker, so are less maintenance, but as long as I keep it under shelter it should be fine.

Now we are all set for a tea party on the porch. Won't you come and join me?  I'm sure I can find some other chairs around here if we need them. The more the merrier!

The same lady where I bought the chair had this lighthouse dishtowel for sale. She just threw it in with the chair! Deal!!  Who can't use another dish towel? Especially such a pretty one?

And for a dollar I bought these two pie stackers:

You may ask what a "pie-stacker" is.  Well, when I saw these they made me think of my mother, because she had these and used them often to carry her wonderful pies to family dinners or pot luck dinners, or wherever anyone was fortunate enough to receive my mother's pies.

See, you stack your pie pans on them (with pie in them of course)

And then you put them in your cake carrier, or in this case, pie carrier:

By the way, those two pyrex pie plates belonged to my mother. I keep them here in this cupboard, right under her pyrex mixing bowls:

Some things are too special to be hidden away...

My mother baked many a delicious pie in those two pie plates, let me tell you. And I know she used those mixing bowls for so many things, probably to mix up her pie crust, bake her macaroni and cheese casserole, put her delicious potato salad in, the list could go on and on.

Now I have to change my name to "Maurleen".  Apparently that's who owned these pie stackers before.

LOL.

Is that enough stuff for a Saturday?

We are studying The Proverbs in our Ladies' Bible Study at church right now. Going through the Proverbs is quite an education in how to live (or how not to live). Here's a good one for today:

"A merry heart does good, like medicine,
But a broken spirit dries the bones."
Proverbs 17:22

No matter what is going on, even when we are "baffled" by life's confusion and frustrations, if we try to keep a "merry heart", we will find that we can cope with life so much better.  No one wants to have dried up bones...

Have a blessed and "Merry" day!

  1. My eastern Tennessee grandma taught me the song, Picking up paw-paws; put 'em in a basket. Picking up paw-paws; put 'em in a basket. Picking up paw-paws; put 'em in a basket.Way down yonder in the paw-paw patch.

I probably seen one before but don't remember. We don't have them here in California.

I taught them to my California sons and Lord willing one day, they'll or I will teach it to their children.

    1. That's a fun song. I remember that one too. Bring them down here to visit so they can see a real paw paw.

  2. Well that's a lot of topics. ☺️ Squirrels are the bane of my existence. There are so many—10 or 15 at a time. I have no birdfeeder, though my neighbor does. The opposite neighbor has oak trees. Hope your baffle continues to work.

I really like wicker so you did score well and it is a nice cushion, too.

You and your hubby look very chilled. (I don't see anyone here in Maine bundled up that much. We must be acclimated.) Hope the walk warmed you.

    1. It was in the high 40's and windy. We were wearing shorts and capris (me), so our legs were bare. The air here has more humidity so cold feels colder. That's my story and I'm sticking with it. I know in Maine you guys go out in your shirtsleeves when it's in the 20's and 30's. Our blood is thinner here. We had a friend in Maine who used to run his snow-blower while wearing shorts and a long sleeved shirt with a down vest on. In the 10's-20's. But he was always a bit crazy. LOL. Have a good night. It's up to 73 now, but still very windy.

    2. Yes, I'd say he was a bit crazy. My aunt and uncle had a cottage on Schoodic Lake after moving to Florida. They had to give it up because they nearly froze to death all summer. It's all what one gets used to. 😊

  3. We use those baffles too! We have to or the bushy tails will eat us out of house and home with the bird seed. Little stinkers.
You know what I thought of when I saw y'all with the hoodies? The Blue Man Group. Just add music. LOLOL

  4. Tom, too, has a love/hate relationship with our squirrels. Now I'm wondering if he needs one of those baffles. My SIL suggested greasing the feeder pole with Vasoline and chile powder, but I think that's too cruel. He affixed a plate to the fence post and drilled a hole at the bottom onto which he placed a dried corncob for them to munch on. Yes, they enjoy it -- but still return to the bird feeders. Sometimes they hang upside down from a limb, even another feeder. Personally, I root for their ingenuity!

Entertaining post -- made more so by your cute selfie.

    1. We got the baffle at Ace Hardware. It was more $ than I wanted to spend, but if it helps save our bird seed, it will pay for itself in no time. Those rascals are like pigs when they start eating. They just don't stop until it's all gone! So far they haven't figured this thing out, but I don't doubt they will keep trying until they do. They are very intelligent little beggars! LOL.

  5. Trying to keep squirrels out of bird feeders seems to be almost a full time job. I’ve tried so many things. One that worked best was to attach a metal slinky to the top of the pole, but make sure it can’t reach the ground at all. The squirrel tries. Yo climb it but the motion scares him away.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh, that slinky idea sounds good! I may try that on the other feeder. It wouldn't be so bad if there was just one squirrel, but I've counted five out there at the same time. I think they are a family and Mama is teaching them how to be birdfeeder bandits. LOL. They definitely are pretty smart. Thanks for the tip. We shall see if we need to do anything else.

  6. My squirrels sit in my apple tree and eat the not yet ripe apples while staring at me. I am pretty sure I heard them laughing at one time. We have never harvested a single apple from either tree! My fault for planting them near the fence line that we now call the squirrel highway!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Oh dear! "The Squirrel Highway" sounds like a song for a funny cartoon about squirrels stealing apples and laughing at the owners. I can see it all now. Don't you sometimes wonder what those rascals are thinking about while eating our apples and birdseed? I do believe they are laughing. Well, I think I definitely heard our squirrel "praying" to the stone squirrel god in the birdbath yesterday, but like all stone gods, "Bobby the Squirrel" just sat there stony faced and said or did nothing. Tough luck, Mr. Squirrel! (I still think the squirrel will eventually figure this baffle thing out and he will get the last laugh, but in the meantime he's really having to work at it! LOL)

  7. Your cupboard is so neat and clean! And your moms dishes, what a treasure. What a deal on those chairs! I would love to come for a visit! Your porch is very cozy. A broken spirit, that's how I've felt lately. So much trauma and many tears the last few years. I try to spend time with the Lord but even that seems too overwhelming. I've got to keep pressing in...

    1. I am so very sorry, Cindy. I know you've had some very sad and difficult times, especially lately with the loss of your sister and your husband's scary fainting spell, etc. I do understand how we can get to the point of "too much" and it does feel overwhelming. I pray that you can set aside some time for yourself to just rest and heal...purposefully spend time with the Lord every day, just "the two of you", even if you have to get up extra early or hide away in a corner somewhere to do it...or especially if you can get outside and take a walk and pray. Do you drive yourself to work? Is it a very long drive? I used to spend that time in commuting to work by listening to Christian radio and singing and praying. It was the best way to start my day before I got to work, and then again on the way home. But then, I had a 45 minute commute. The important thing is to look for time in your day to spend alone with God. To me, that was the key to healing my broken spirit. Sometimes all you have to do is just sit there and wait on Him. You don't have to say or do anything. He understands your heart and knows what you need. One of my favorite verses during that time in my life in particular was "Be still and know that I Am God." (Psalm 46:10) I found that when I did exactly that...He came to me and soothed my hurting heart. I will be praying for you, Cindy. Stay in touch. Jesus loves you.

  8. Those squirrels are hysterical! My pup, Scruffy, goes nuts watching them out the windows and just about claws his way through the glass to get to them. lol. Love your 'twins' picture. You must be fraternal twins rather than identical? Just asking. Broken spirit has been part of this life for a while with all the family trauma, death and daily stresses. Spring always helps to brighten the days here. I am patiently waiting for God to give me some sunny days. xo Diana

    1. I know it has been a difficult winter especially for you. Praying things will begin to get brighter with the warmer weather/sunny days. Hopefully they will come soon. Yeah, we are "fraternal twins" all right! LOL. It does get kind of scary that we are becoming so much like each other after 52 years of marriage. LOL. I can imagine how Scruffy loves to watch the squirrels. We once had a dog named Dusty who would literally climb up the tree to get to the squirrels. I don't know what he would have done if he ever caught one. He was just in for the "thrill of the hunt". LOL.

  9. If it was me, I would leave Mr. Squirrel a little bowl of seeds where he could easily reach it. Of course, then you'd have 5,000 squirrels...so maybe not a good idea! 😄

    1. Ha ha. We have left another bird feeder available to the squirrels. I can't see it from the house, so it doesn't bother me so much to see them on it. And now we can watch the birds eat in peace here. Compromise is sometimes a good thing.

  10. We have what are known as squirrel-buster feeders that work really well, Pamela. Even if a squirrel decides to play acrobat, as soon as he or she gets on the feeder, the weight closes the plastic shell so no seeds are available. To compensate, we always spread some sunflower seeds on the ground for them. Works for us!
Loved all the photos, too. Stay warm!
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you, Martha. I have let the other bird feeder available to the squirrels. I can't see it as well from the house so what I don't see doesn't bother me so much. LOL. Sorry, I know what a soft spot you have for "Racer" and his pals. I love them too, but after a while we get a bit aggravated and it is time to do something. The birds seem to be much happier now that they are not in constant competition for the seeds. I hope you are having a good weekend. Trusting Danny got home safely from his trip. I know he was a proud papa.

  13. Pam I LOVE YOUR NEW CHAIR!---very pretty. There are so many just like that one on so many of Charleston's piazzas and porches. We have one in a loveseat which we got from an old victorian house. Wow, those dang SQUIRRELS....... we battle them too, have for years. I'll show Mr. Front Porch the baffle, I think I've heard him mention them. Let me know how it works okay? Love all the pretty pictures...I love your secret garden and everything you have out there. Love seeing a peek of Mrs. Bluebird! We THINK ours are nesting and she might be laying eggs....we are so hopeful!! I scatter crunched up breadcrumbs and crackers, "tater" chips, leftover popcorn, and pretzels etc....for them, and I EVEN BUY THEM PEANUTS!!---and they still steal the birds seeds, dang it. LOL. Hope you've had a real nice Sunday!

The paint is kind of coming off in places...so I may need to scrape it and repaint it, but not anytime soon. I'm just going to enjoy it. Oh I do hope your Bluebirds will hatch a beautiful family! Keep watching! If Mrs. Bluebird is spending time inside the birdhouse, then most likely she's nesting on the eggs. They were so much fun to watch last year, and I am very hopeful again for this year. Yes, the squirrels are something, aren't they? They just can't be content with what seeds fall on the ground. They love the challenge of stealing what they know they shouldn't!! Little bandits! LOL. I did have a very pleasant Sunday and I hope you did too. Keep me posted on your "plans". Love ya!

  14. Fun post, Pam! I love the chair and love the dish towel even more.

We have our bird feeder strung on a clothesline between a tree and an upstairs deck. The feeder is out in the middle of it. It has not been bothered by bears, and only rarely by squirrels, since we began using this system. Although there was one time when a gray squirrel launched from the deck railing and proceeded "hand over hand", upside down, until he got to the feeder. I think it was quite an effort for him to make and he must have decided it wasn't worth the trouble, for I haven't caught him at it again.

The Pyrex pie plates are beautiful. Bowls too. My mother had quite a few Pyrex and Fire King bowls and casserole dishes. Pie plates also, but hers were the clear glass ones. I've never seen any like these. What treasures!

    1. Oh my! I bet that squirrel on the "tight rope" routine was quite interesting to see!! They sure are tenacious when it comes to getting to the birdseed. Bears can be also. We had several episodes with bears/bird feeders at our last house and had to take the feeders in at night. I remember we also had a huge bear at our house in Conway, NH, raiding the bird feeder at night, so it had to come down and I don't think we ever put it back up again. They have "rules" about bird feeders in that area during certain times of the year because of the bears. We also had a moose in the yard at that house. Oh the adventures of living in the "wild". Thank you for enjoying seeing the pyrex pie plates and bowls. They do take us right back to our childhood and happy memories of home, don't they? Oh, my mother had plenty of the clear glass ones too, but these were her favorites, especially for the pie crusts that she baked ahead of time for her famous coconut cream pie! That was her specialty. Thank you for visiting with me today! Always a pleasure.

  16. I don't know if this will help you or not, but here's what we did long ago when we still had our own yard and our own squirrels (har har). (First, let me say, Jerry and I ADORE squirrels and love to watch their endless antics. LOL!) I had access to a LOT of used items back then and recycled many things for use in our gardens and yard. For the bird feeder pole, I had found an old pipe 16 feet long with an L" end piece, made my own hook for hanging the bird feeder on it. For the squirrel baffle, I used one of my many black 5-gallon planter pots from when I bought large plants and saved them. I cut a hole in the bottom center just barely big enough to push it onto the bird feeder pole and cut the lip off the top edgevso there's nthing for them to cling to. About 3 feet from where the bottom of the bird feeder would be hanging, I wound gray duct tape around the pole, round and round and round. There has to be enought that the planter will NOT fall down over the duct tape (pull down on it HARD to test). The planter will REST on the duct tape, but will NOT be taped to it or the pole. The planter needs to hang loose. I made a 4 foot deep hole (by hammering another pole into the ground) and then put the bird feeder pole in, tamped the dirt around the hole real good, and stabilised the pole with limestone rocks. This means the 16 foot pole has 11 feet of pole standing upright out of the ground, still low enough to get the bird feeder to clean/fill/whatever. I made myself a sturdy pole out of another pole for lifting the feeder off/on the hook. With this set-up of the pole, baffle, and feeder, we NEVER had a problem with quirrels in the 20 years I kept it all maintained. It's too slick for them to hang on to and the lack of the lip on the pot means they can't hang on it. And to help the critters not be tempted by the feeder, I made a squirrel set-up 15-20 feet further out, with a pan (holes drilled for water/rain drainage) nailed on top of an old tree stump and then I gave them cheap peanuts, corn on the cob, etc. // I love all your kitchenware... my mama had bowls and dishes exacly like yours... I think my dad sold them in a rummage sale shortly after mama died in 1971. // As soon as we can REALLY be outdoors in warmth (haha). Jerry wants to build a bird house and a feeder with grandson Aero...I've already got the plans ready for them! Be blessed, Pam!

    1. Thank you for all these wonderful ideas! I may try your plastic planter baffle on the other bird feeder. I do have some of those planters around here somewhere. Oh, I hope your Jerry and Aero will build the bird house and feeder together. What a wonderful project. Be sure to take pictures when they do, and share them on your blog. I love to see Grandpas and grandchildren working together...making precious memories. I am glad the pictures of the vintage pyrex bowls/pie plates brought back happy memories. I am sorry your mother's are gone, but back in 1971 no one fully appreciated the value and sentimentality of pyrex dishes! Nowadays they want premium prices for them at upscale antique shops! But to me they are worth more than that, just knowing my mother used them and that they have such happy memories attached. But then again, I know we can't save everything, so even just a picture is worth a lot of happy memories. Have a blessed and happy day, and enjoy your squirrels. We may find that we are bored with not being able to see ours in action now that they can't get to the bird feeder...but then again...maybe not. I like your idea about a dish of nuts/corn/etc. just for them. Maybe I will try that.
