Bluebird Update and The Goose Armada

Good Tuesday Morning Everyone!  Here's a few happy pictures to help us get started with our day.

I believe our baby bluebirds must have hatched, because Mama and Papa Bluebird have both been busy coming and going to the nest in the birdhouse, taking turns bringing tasty bugs to feed the babies!

Here's Mama on the housetop, watching for possible intruders.  Between the two of them, they are both very vigilant to stand guard and be ready to fend off any other birds or "creatures" who might disturb their babies:

When she thinks it is safe to go in, she looks inside and checks on the babies, and sometimes she goes inside for a second or two and comes right back out, and other times she stays right there at the "window" and drops the food in:

Meanwhile, Papa Bluebird is keeping watch from a nearby tree:

Then Mama Bluebird comes back outside and flies to a perch to stand guard (and look squarely at me as if to warn me to stay away from her babies!)

And then she looks back at her house to make sure all is well there...

While Papa Bluebird flies to the window and drops in the tasty bugs that he caught for the babies to eat:

Again, he is very careful to look around and make sure all is well:

I think he's on to me...

After both parents have dropped off their offerings for the babies to eat, they fly to the nearby holly tree to reconnoiter and plan their next move.

After chit-chatting for a few moments, they fly away to other places in the yard where they know the good bugs are.

Meanwhile, there's another interesting show going on out on Still Waters Pond:
(Well, actually this might have been the afternoon before, when the sun was so bright it was hard to see what was going on out there)

Do YOU see the "armada" of goose ships lined up just off shore?

They were making their way in, closer and closer, silently paddling by in hopes no one would notice them

Suddenly they caught sight of me standing up on the shore, and they began to send signals and make their clucking goose sounds toward each other

As they stayed in formation, the lead goose began to honk more loudly and you could see them pivot their heads toward the pond instead of the shore:

As the honking became more emphatic, they each began swimming out further into the water, picking up speed as they called to one another:

And it would seem as though on the count of three they all lifted up their mighty wings and prepared for "lift-off":

And off they flew "into the wild-blue wonder, flying high into the sky"!

I could hear them honking all the way up and around the pond and off to another lake just beyond the horizon.  But they'll be back later. It's all a part of their daily routine. Never a dull moment out there on "Still Waters Pond".  Me thinks the "waters" aren't really all that "still" after all! LOL.

So what else is going on? Hmmm, well, let's see. Nothing much. I went to our Ladies' Bible Study yesterday afternoon. I had mentioned in an earlier post that we are studying the Book of Proverbs.

Someone had asked me what we were using to study the Proverbs, so I thought I would share this information with all of you in case you are interested in a new study guide for your group:

Although this says it is a "6-Session Bible Study...", I believe we will be taking much longer than that with our group.  When you get 15 or more ladies together for an hour, well, you can imagine that it takes longer to get through one lesson than what the writers of this study guide ever considered...

I think we are all realizing that there is a lot more to the book of Proverbs than just a lot of pithy sayings and sometimes funny ways of saying things.  Proverbs is full of Godly wisdom and instruction for living.  And like Proverbs 1:7 says, "fools despise wisdom and instruction." A wise person pays attention to what God is teaching us through His Word, The Bible.

Well, I guess it's time to get this day started. I hope wherever you are you are having a beautifully blessed day.  And if you want to do a little interesting Bible Study to start your day, pick up the book of Proverbs and start reading. You might be surprised at what you will learn!

  1. We're trying to decide what to study in Sunday School after we're done with the Book of Luke. I'll suggest this one. Thanks for the idea.
I enjoyed the bird photos. Our Blue Birds are nesting. All these birds are fun to watch.
    Blessings xx

    1. It would be a good one for a Sunday School class, I would think. We are enjoying it. Oh, I hope you get to enjoy seeing your Bluebird babies when they appear. I was surprised to see them feeding the babies already! I can't keep up with their "schedule". LOL. But it's fun trying.

  2. The majority of the time I hear the geese honking louder and louder I ready my camera for bird in flight. The geese do become airborne more often than not, when the honking increasingly gets louder!

    1. You are so right about that. I did watch them today fly across the pond after honking and I tried to get some better pictures of them in flight, but by camera is slower than they are. So again, I think I missed a good opportunity. I keep trying.

  4. What fun for you to have so much bird activity. It does appear that Mr. and Mrs. Bluebird are well aware that you're watching. I have never seen a pond with so many lilypads. What lingers below? 🐊 Not him I hope!

    1. As far as I know there is no gator below the lilypads. This pond just needs a good cleaning out. A couple of years ago it got quite dry and many of the lilies died back and when the rains came back and filled the pond again there were not so many lily pads, but they seem to multiply and they don't have any enemies I guess. It makes it difficult to kayak through them, however, so I haven't been able to do that in a long while....especially since I've had neck surgery and a frozen shoulder. Anyway, we still enjoy the pond, and I bet there's lots of fish in there, but no one here does any fishing. Such is life! LOL

  5. That really does look like Mama Bluebird's giving you the stink eye! Will the bluebirds actually dive bomb someone if they come too near?
Again, I'm thinking your photographs would make for an awesome coffee-table book ... and your kids could sell them at Dixie Cottage! Enjoy your day!

    1. The Bluebirds haven't dive-bombed me yet, but they sure don't like the squirrels. They usually just either stay inside the birdhouse or fly away to a nearby tree when I come in the yard, but they do keep a watchful eye on me. Now if I went too close to the birdhouse itself, I am sure they would NOT be pleased and would let me know it! I'm not giving them the opportunity! LOL. Yu are kind to say that about my photos. I don't know that they would sell at Dixie Cottage, however, because they mostly cater to seaside people who love all things "coastal", but not so much lake/pond sights. It's funny how people are about such things. And I can only imagine how expensive it would be to publish a book with so many photographs. I'd need a kind benefactor to support me in that effort. Are you offering? LOL!!! Enjoy your day too. You always make me smile.

  6. Those Bluebirds are so sweet. I have always enjoyed the book of Proverbs.

    1. Thank you, Ruth. They are sweet indeed, unless you are a squirrel coming too close! Then they really do dive bomb them to keep them away from their nest! And yes, the book of Proverbs is a practical book of wisdom. We are learning a lot from it!!

  7. These pictures of the blue birds and the geese are beatiful. Thank you for sharing them with us. It's cold again up here. Tomorrow, it is supposed to be warm (70's) but rainy. I won't tell you about what Hubby says about the rest of the week; it is not good.

    1. Awww, Debby, that was a sweet thing to say. Sometimes I feel more like a child than an adult...so maybe that's what I should be doing. I think I'm in my 2nd childhood. LOL. I'm glad you enjoyed the "story". Hope you are doing well! Have a blessed day.

    1. Thank you, Terri. Yes, never a dull moment around here and on Still Waters Pond. The waters might be still, but the wildlife never is! Yes, Proverbs is more interesting than I thought it would be. But God's Word is always a joy to study, no matter which book! Now, if we would just learn to apply it as we should...that's the ticket! Have a beautiful rest of your week.

    1. I am glad you are enjoying the Bluebirds with me. They are a real treat to be able to watch up close and personal. We don't often get to watch other baby birds/parents like that. God's creation is so amazing.

  12. You know I love to see what is happening around your pond. Those geese almost "disappear" among the lilies! All you can see from a distance is the necks and heads...your very own Loch Ness Monsters! The bluebirds are so sweet. I can't wait until we meet this year's babies. Laughing about how long you say it will take you to do the study. My small group has been using Precepts 40-minute lessons. Ha! We don't come in anywhere close to 40 minutes. Too much yakking and good discussion about the lessons. Hope you are having a blessed week, Pam!

    1. I think the most important thing about women's Bible STudies is that the "yakking" IS about the lesson and how it is being applied to their own personal lives. That's why we study the Bible, so that we can learn how to live a more Christ-like life, filled with His Spirit and Joy and Peace! I sometimes get a little frustrated when the "yakking" goes on too long and we can't get to the next point, but someone in that room needs that time to speak, and some to hear, and some to comfort one another. It's all good in God's economy. Yes, our pond is "teeming with life"...you never know WHAT may pop up out from under the lilies! LOL. Do you have bluebirds nesting yet? They are SO much fun to watch. God is good. Have a blessed and beautiful day.

  13. That Bible study of Proverbs is one I would like to do. We are doing an 8 week study of Colossians titled Truthfilled. Your photo essay of the bluebirds is wonderful, they are precious birds to me.

    1. Thank you, Terra. I bet the Colossians study is good too. We studied that in Sunday School recently, and there is a lot of wonderful "stuff" in there for us to learn and grow from. Do you have bluebirds in CA? They may be a little different out there as these are "Eastern Bluebirds". Not sure what a "western" Bluebird would look like! They are so wonderful to watch. Very entertaining! Have a blessed and beautiful day.

  14. So glad the baby bluebirds have hatched, Pamela. I'm sure it won't be long before they're poking their little heads up by the hole! The Proverbs study does sound interesting, too. Enjoy your day!

  16. Oh that bluebird family just makes my heart happy!! I love that you narrate for them!! Can't wait to see that first baby bluebird head pop out that window! Your Bible study sounds so helpful and instructive. Soak it all in...good thing you have more than six weeks!
