"It's a Blustery Day, WTP"

Who remembers this?

Well, today was a "rather blustery day..."
It rained and rained, and the wind blew and blew and was raw and cold...

This was the temperature at about 3:00 p.m.  54 degrees, here in Florida.
I just looked at the thermometer now and it is 50 degrees at 6:19 p.m., and going down. No more rain, but still windy and raw.

This was after the rain had stopped. I don't know how many inches we got, but it rained pretty steadily for two days.  Still Waters Pond is full again.

You can't tell much from these pictures, but the wind was blowing and well, it was a blustery day...

So, for the first time in a LONG time, I felt like baking cookies! I haven't done much baking in a while because of my neck and arm issues prior to my surgery, plus I prefer to bake when it is cooler weather so it makes the house feel warm and cozy.
(and smell so good too!)

Warm Oatmeal Cookies, fresh out of the oven! Want one?

And my other favorite thing to do on a cold windy blustery day is make Hobo Stew: (recipe can be found on THIS POST. Click HERE, and Be sure to scroll down when you get there.)

And Hobo Stew always calls for cornbread:

Perfect food for a blustery day...

So what kind of things do YOU like to do on a blustery day?
We've had the "fire" in the "fireplace"...makes it feel warm and cozy in the house. Actually we usually just turn on the fire light and not the heat portion, because if we do, it makes the furnace not turn on when it should and then the rest of the house gets too cold. Yes, our "furnace" has been on today, because there has been no sunshine whatsoever, and with all the rain and wind, it's been a very chilly raw day.  We Floridians have thinner blood than people up north because we aren't used to cold weather...so we need a little heat when it's so cold.

I want to thank you all for your prayers and well wishes for me this past week. I truly am feeling a lot better and so very very thankful. Also want to thank you for praying for my friend "Jimmy", who has the brain tumor. He came home from the hospital yesterday, and is waiting for an appointment next week at the Moffitt Cancer Center, for further evaluation and possible treatment. Your continued prayers for Jimmy and his family are greatly appreciated.

Also wanted to give kudos to our Putnam County Fire and Rescue and Sheriff's Department today. In the storm a tree blew down across the fence and driveway of one of our church friends, who lives alone and has health issues. After she placed a call to the county, it wasn't long before a crew of workers came and took care of the tree and cleaned up all the mess so that she could safely get in and out of her driveway. Very thankful for these folks who went beyond the call of duty to help a 'damsel in distress".

Praise God for our First Responders!!

Have a blessed night and Sunday tomorrow my friends.

Wednesday Treasures ~ "Timeless Treasures"

Today (written on Tuesday) seemed like a good day to bake some cookies.  Nothing special...just my ordinary Oatmeal raisin walnut cookies.  (click on the link for the recipe). They seem to be the family favorite and I have convinced myself they are healthy, with all of their nuts and raisins and oatmeal. Never mind the brown sugar and shortening, flour, salt, baking powder and eggs. Oh, and don't forget the vanilla and cinnamon! That's all healthy, right?

And so, while the cookies were baking, in between batches going in and out of the oven, I sat down in my rocking chair in the kitchen and had a cup of tea and "taste-tested" the cookies to make sure they were good enough to eat! Of course, when they are fresh and hot out of the oven is when they are the best!

While sitting there in my rocking chair, which, by the way, is one of my "treasures", as my parents bought it for me just before our first child was born, and I rocked my three babies many a sleepless night in that rocking chair; anyway, while cooking or baking in the kitchen I like to sit in my rocker and read from this little book while I sip my cup of tea and eat that fresh hot cookie...  I know I've probably referred to this before, but today it was a special time and I thought it would fit in with this Wednesday Treasures theme.

You see, I originally gave this book to my mother for Mother's Day many years ago. Then when she left this earth to go where her true treasures were waiting, i.e.; heaven, the book came back to me.

And so now I love to sift through its pages and think about how much I know she enjoyed this book at one time, and it gives me great pleasure to know that we shared these special "treasures".

"The very best gifts are the gifts of your time that come with a memory attached.  It's easy to give this treasure to the people you love!...Write a letter on a special occasion and save it to give to the recipient later...Nurture a family tradition, or start a new one...Teach a skill that was passed along to you by someone you loved...Research your family tree and make copies for others in your family...Tell the stories!...Pass along the family stories you've heard and tell your own stories..."  Emilie Barnes, Timeless Treasures.

"Take it--'tis a gift of love--that seeks thy good alone;
Keep it for the giver's sake, and read it for thine own."
Youth's Keepsake, 1836

Some of my own "Timeless Treasures"...Letters between my mother and me...special little "love notes" that are now priceless.

"You have the special privilege of providing a link to that heritage for oncoming generations.
Write about yesterday.
Write about today, which will be history tomorrow.
Continue to write about all of your todays until the very end of your life.
Put the words on paper which will prevent your life
and the lives of other members of your family from slipping into oblivion."
Lois Daniel

My pink geranium plant that I rescued from overheating outside. It seems much happier inside where it is cool. I can't say that I blame it one bit.

This needlepoint footstool came from my parents' home. I don't know for sure if my grandmother did this needlepoint or not. She did a lot of them many years ago, and this may have come from her house before it went to my parents. I am pretending it is so, and enjoying it as if it was created by her. And even if it wasn't, it still came from my parents' home, and that makes it a special treasure in itself.

Well, the cookies are finally done and it is time for me to clean up the kitchen and start preparing supper.

I hope you have enjoyed this little walk down memory lane with me as I've share a few more of my "Wednesday Treasures".

Oh, this teacup with the sweet bluebird on it (and also the three tea cups in the picture above with the letters) was a gift from a dear friend who was a member of the church where I worked before I retired. She gave me a whole box of special teacups and saucers because she and her husband were leaving their home and moving into a Senior Living apartment where they wouldn't have room for so many "treasures." You can read more about that story HERE.
It was during a very distressful time in my life, and her unselfish gift of her "treasures" really gave me a blessing when I needed it most.

"I have written my life in small sketches,
a little today, a little yesterday,
as I have thought of it,
as I remember all the things from childhood on through the years,
good ones, and unpleasant ones,
that is how they come out and that is how we have to take them."
Anna Mary Moses
(Grandma Moses)

P.S. While I was writing this last night, we were having a terrific thunderstorm, with lots of thunder and lightning.  Thankfully the power never flickered so I was able to finish writing. Afterwards was this magnificent sunset!  What a beautiful gift from God to treasure!  Another of His stunning masterpieces spread out on His canvas of the skies for us to behold! Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!

I hope your day is filled with the flow of blessings from the Lord!

The Doxology

"Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!
Praise Him all creatures here below!
Praise Him above ye heavenly host!
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
Amen.

A little brief history of the Doxology: "These words were written in 1674 by Thomas Ken as the final verse of two hymns, "Awake, my soul, and with the sun" and "Glory to thee, my God, this night," intended for morning and evening worship at Winchester College."  Wikipedia.

Since they were originally intended for "morning and evening worship", they are certainly appropriate here, as we welcome another beautiful morning while we contemplate the wonder and magnificence of God's marvelous creation from the evening before!

Moments of Grace: Creating Joy out of Chaos

My morning did not start out looking like this picture above...or below...
"Breakfast with Teddy", a picture on a greeting card that I love...
by Jessie Wilcox Smith - 1909

What seemed to be a good idea quickly began to deteriorate as I attempted to pull the container of Quaker Oats out of the cupboard, only to have the lid fly off and dry oats scatter literally all over my kitchen.  So much for my good intentions...

No, I wasn't planning to have a bowl of oatmeal...actually I wanted to mix up a batch of blueberry muffins since I had some fresh ripe juicy berries just waiting to be enjoyed.  The recipe I had decided to use called for oatmeal in the batter.  (Recipe to follow). But now I had to clean up a big mess before I could even begin to bake the muffins. Not a good way to start the day...

However, I was determined to have those muffins, so I persevered and soon the delightful aroma of blueberry muffins permeated the kitchen.
Then I decided to make a little tea party out of the occasion.

My hubby joined me, but only for the muffins. He wasn't too interested in the tea party part.

Since it was a dreary, rainy chilly morning we had decided we weren't going anywhere. And because the kitchen was already in a state of chaos from my earlier fiasco, I decided I may as well continue on making a mess by baking a batch of oatmeal cookies! After all, if the carton of oatmeal was in a state of destruction, we might as well finish it off and get rid of the offending container for good!

The only thing about all of this activity that I haven't told you was that while I was busily "creating" these delectable concoctions...which, if you do any baking you will understand how important it is to be able to concentrate on what you are doing and not have a lot of interruptions...well....here's the rest of the story...

Since my recent retirement hubby and I have been adjusting to our new routine together. He had already been retired for several years, and although he was anxious for me to come home, he had his own little schedule of daily activities, which did not include having me around to interfere.  However, he seems to have adjusted quite rapidly, and now requests my attention frequently...especially when I am busy trying to accomplish something in the kitchen or the opposite end of the house from where he is.

Baking cookies with my little boys many moons ago...
Today was no exception. As I was mixing up the batter for the cookies or trying to place the raw dough on the cookie sheets and time the baking of the ones in the oven, etc. (you know the routine)...he kept calling me from the living room (a long hike from the kitchen in this house) and asking for my assistance with a project he was doing on the computer.

It reminded me of the way it used to be when my kids were little and I was trying to bake...and they would be begging for my attention from all parts of the house...and soon they would come running into the kitchen to sample the cookies and lick the beaters...

But I digress...anyway, this morning I found myself getting agitated with his constant interruptions and a little bit frustrated and almost ugly...and then I had to stop and catch my breath for a minute...and give thanks to the Lord because my husband is here in this house with me, safe and healthy and wonderful.  Too many of my friends, loved ones and acquaintances not much older than I (and some younger) have already lost their husbands to cancer or heart attacks or other horrible events.  How ungracious of me to lose my patience with the one I love and cherish when I should be thanking the Lord he is here, alive and well.

So, after working through the numerous interruptions the cookies did finally get baked...and miracle of miracles, they actually were good enough to eat!

And now we are both back to doing what we like to do during the day...

Hubby is enjoying listening to some music on the computer

while I am sitting here on my computer telling you all about it.

(notice I am wearing my new flannel shirt) (click on link for that story)

Oops..I just looked at the clock and realized that we are going to be late getting the meatloaf into the oven if I don't stop writing and get back to the kitchen...so, guess who came in and actually helped me in the kitchen?   Yep, my sweet hubby.  And that is Joy, Joy, pure joy!

Oh, here's the recipe I promised you:

This is a combination of a couple of recipes in my Betty Crocker cookbook.  I tend to adjust recipes to suit my mood:

Blueberry Muffins:

1 egg
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil- (I used 1/2 cup applesauce instead of the oil)
1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup quick-cooking oats (dry)
1/3 cup sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup fresh blueberries

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease bottoms only of about 12 medium muffin cups. Beat egg; stir in milk and oil.(or applesauce in place of oil).
Stir in remaining ingredients all at once just until flour is moistened.
Fill muffin cups about 3/4 full.
Bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes
Immediately remove from pan.

Enjoy!

Rainy Sunday Afternoon = Cookie Baking Time!

As you know, on rainy afternoons I often find myself in the kitchen baking up something good to eat! (Click on this link for "Things to Do on a Rainy Day") This afternoon we had one rain storm roll through after another...fortunately the power didn't go off...and it was a perfect afternoon for baking some cookies! (Click on this link for another rainy afternoon of cookie baking with my son) Although I couldn't convince my baker son to assist me this time, he did come take a few pictures on his cell phone camera when the batteries died on my camera after just one picture!   So we were able to capture this delightful rainy afternoon adventure to share with you!

I'm sorry you can't smell the wonderful cookie aroma that is currently wafting through our house....making me drool for another warm cookie fresh out of the oven! I also regret that you are not here with me to taste these delectable Oatmeal Cookies along with a cup of tea.  Someday you will just have to come on over and see what's cooking! (Better wait for another rainy day, however!)

Ok, here we go!  All the ingredients are ready and waiting!
I love homemade Oatmeal Cookies probably more than any other cookie!
Somehow I have convinced myself that they are actually good for me! You know, the oatmeal,
raisins, chopped walnuts...those are all good things, right?
Never mind that there is also 2 cups of brown sugar and a cup of shortening in there...
along with the eggs, flour, salt and baking soda. Oh, and the Watkins Vanilla (double strength!)
Did I forget anything?
Oops, I just noticed that I had faintly written in 1 Teas. of Cinnamon...and I left it out this time! I knew I'd forget something!
But they were still good.

(Remember you can click on pictures to enlarge for better viewing)

This is my favorite Oatmeal Cookie Recipe.  Today I made one alteration.
I did not mix in the raisins with the whole bowl of dough.
Instead I put a few raisins on most of the cookies,
and then put some "Craisins" on a few others for variety.
They turned out really good!!
Oh, I also used the Crisco "Butter flavored" shortening
instead of the regular shortening, since we had bought
some by mistake and
needed to use it up!  It added a good flavor to the cookies as well!

The finished product! They sure were good!
Thanks for stopping by!
Come again soon!!

Me taking hot cookies out of the oven. Can't you smell them now? Why don't you cook up something
yummy with your family on the next rainy afternoon!  You know you are craving
something warm out of the oven right now yourself!! Go ahead! Enjoy! It's Ok!!!

Thank you for joining me on this rainy afternoon!
See you again next time!

Y'all Come!
