Saturday Thoughts

I'll start with this...Yes, I am VERY thankful and feeling blessed to have come through this storm virtually unscathed. When I look around our area, I hear that there are still some without power and may not get it back until next week.  But I don't see much devastation or destruction from the storm here in our community...maybe a few trees down here and there, and there may be other issues I am not aware of, but all in all, our area is very very fortunate.  Then when I look on the news and hear about the horrific devastation in so many other places, both here in Florida and also up in Georgia and the Carolinas and Tennessee, especially in the mountains...well, I just have to be completely humbled that we escaped with so few issues here when others are suffering so very much. I have a "relative by marriage" who lost everything in her home due to storm surge. She lives close to the Gulf coast. Sadly, she also very recently lost her husband unexpectedly, and she truly is suffering from so much loss.  My heart truly breaks for her. Thankfully, her friends and family are rallying support for her and are helping her through this crisis...but it is a loss that she will never totally get over.

Last evening I was blessed to spend some time watching the sunset over Still Waters Pond. After the anxiety of the past few days it had a very calming effect on me, and I was truly grateful to God for sending His beauty to us to behold.

It was kind of like a rainbow after the storm...a sign to us that God is with us and He hasn't forgotten us. It was very comforting.

You can't see them in this picture, but I was watching little bats flying to and fro, snatching mosquitoes out of the air, and I thanked them for their kindness.

And then I heard some birds calling, a high squeaky kind of whistle-y call, and then I saw these ducks flying over the pond. I couldn't tell what kind of ducks they were, but I'm thinking perhaps they were the Black Bellied Whistling Ducks that were here a few weeks ago.

Not sure, but still, I was thrilled to see them and hear them.  It made me think about how Noah sent out a dove to look for dry land after being on the Ark for so long after the flood...once it came back with an olive branch, and the next time it didn't come back at all, so Noah knew that the waters were receding and soon they would be able to leave the ark and get back onto dry land.  It gave me a sense of peace that soon things would get back to normal, but it may take a bit longer for some areas of the country for certain.  We truly need to pray for our brothers and sisters in those parts of the country that have been so devastated. May God comfort them and provide what they need in miraculous ways.

I find myself feeling kind of guilty for enjoying "normal" kinds of life while so many others are suffering.  Do you ever feel that way?  I suppose that is a normal response.  I wish there was something that I could do to help out, but I'm not really in a position to help out much financially or physically, however I can pray, and that is oftentimes the best thing we can do. God knows where to find those who are able to do the leg work and the financial support...and prayer is something that actually helps turn more hearts toward God.  So unless He shows me some other way I can help, that will be my part.

Actually yesterday something strange happened, and in many ways I feel like it was a "God-thing".  There was an older, very heavy-set man sitting out in our street almost in front of our house on his John Deere tractor/mower. It had broken down, and he couldn't get it to start. Apparently he was riding his mower down the street to go to the Dollar General store that is around the corner from us in the entrance to our neighborhood.  Yes, you heard me...he was riding his mower to the store. That is something that I've noticed that is not all that unusual here in our neighborhood. They don't have to get out onto the busy highway to go to the store, so I've seen people riding golf carts, larger tractors with a canopy over top and giving their dogs a ride to the store, bikes, and four wheeler vehicles. This is a rural community and well, people get creative with their modes of transportation, as long as they aren't on the highway.
Anyway, I'll try to make a long story short...the mower was in the street and he couldn't move it off the street. So my hubby went out and asked him if he needed some help, and he said he couldn't move it as it was kind of locked up. Hubby looked at it and couldn't figure anything out either, so he offered to drive the man back to his home, but he didn't want to leave the mower in the street, which is understandable. He thought someone was coming who might be able to help him.  So hubby came back inside, and because it was hot out, I suggested we take him a bottle of water. Of course, since it was my idea, I could take it...LOL...anyway, I took him a bottle of water and he said I was an "angel", and he was very thankful. I offered to make a phone call for him on my phone, but he actually had his own phone with him.  He still didn't want to leave the mower, so he sat down in the shade on the grass. He had long white hair and was rather large and rotund, and it seems like he was wearing a red shirt. He reminded me of Santa Claus.   Anyway, a little later hubby went back out and checked on him and took him another bottle of water as actually an hour or more had gone by. People would stop and ask him if they could help, but no one seemed to be able to do anything and on they'd go.  Finally a man came with a four wheeler, and he was able to pull or drag the tractor off the road onto the grass.  He then convinced the man to let him take him back home.  Not long after that someone knocked on our door wanting to know if the mower was for sale.  Then another person came later and knocked and wondered if it was being left out there as a "give away".  Sometimes people put things beside the road they don't want and people take them, whether they work or not.  So we had to tell the people that no, it wasn't for sale or give away and that we hoped it would still be there in the morning!  The old man came back later with a friend who drove him there, and they looked at it again and still couldn't figure out how to get it started or move it, and so had to leave it overnight.

Thankfully the mower was still there this morning when we woke up.  We went to the grocery store and came back after a while, and no sooner did we get inside the house than someone came knocking on our door. I opened the door, and there was another older rather rotund man with long white hair standing there wanting to know about the mower. At first I thought he was the same man who owned it, but then realized he was different, but he could've been his brother. He also reminded me of Santa Claus! LOL. I told him the story about the mower, etc., and then he offered me a grocery bag that he was holding, and in it was a bag of fresh apples and a 5 lb. bag of potatoes! He wanted me to have them! I looked around for his car, and seeing none, I asked him where he came from and how he got there! He also had a cane, and had come up our 5 steps onto the front deck, carrying that heavy bag! He said he was a neighbor down the street, but he had just come from the food pantry in the next little town over, where they distribute food to the needy. He said he had enough apples and potatoes and wanted me to have these! I said that he surely hadn't walked all the way to the food pantry (about 3 miles away from us), and it was starting to sprinkle rain...He said no, but he had been waiting for us to come home and he was a neighbor.  Well, I thanked him very kindly, all the while wondering about this very strange turn of events and the two men coming into our lives who both looked like Santa Claus within 24 hours, neither of whom we had ever seen before! One called me an angel for bringing him water, and the other brought me gifts I never expected.

I'm not even sure why I am  telling you this long story...and btw, the mower is still out there, 24 hours later!  I think it is a story that has taught me a lesson.  You cannot out-give God.  Showing kindness to the one man yesterday and offering him a drink of water on a hot day, and then today a total stranger shows up with gifts for us. I truly never expected that and was totally humbled and "blown away" by this simple gift of apples and potatoes.

Please understand I am not sharing this story with you for any pats on the back, but to demonstrate the amazing ways God blesses us when we give without expecting anything in return. With all of the needy people out there right now, especially because of this storm, it is a good lesson to me that shows that even a cup of water, given freely to others, is not a small thing in God's eyes. Whatever we can do to help someone else who is hurting or in need is truly a big thing to God.

Luke 6:38
38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

Psalm 116:12
"What shall I return to the Lord
for all his goodness to me?"

And with that, I think I will close this post for tonight.  I had other things I was going to write about, but for some reason this was what came out.  Must be a lesson there for all of us in one way or another.

Something pretty to close with...I went outside this afternoon to put the bird feeders and other lawn "ornaments" back in the yard after having taken them down for the storm.  I couldn't help but see these three lovely yellow " Cloudless sulphur butterflies" flitting around from flower to flower on the Cape Honeysuckle bush.  They were so light and pretty and happy as they danced from flower to flower without a care in the world, and then they would swirl up and around each other in the air and fly away for a second or two and come back...so delightful to watch...

They made me smile and thank the Lord again for His lovely creation that He uses to bless us.

What lovely things have you seen around you lately that you can share?

Psalm 62:8  NKJV

8 Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah

Amen and Good Night!

Thankful Thursday!

I wasn't sure if I would have time to write tonight, but as the evening hours wore on I kept reflecting on how wonderful our day was today, and I just felt like it was something that needed to be remembered.  Many of us who blog do so to remember special moments in our lives...and to share them with you, our friends. Why do we do this? To give thanks to the Lord for the good things He is doing in our lives, and also to encourage one another in our daily walk.  When we see and hear about the good things that others are doing to bless other folks, it encourages us to want to pass that blessing on to others...at least that's how I feel about it.

Today was a lovely day.  I mentioned last night in my post:
"Tomorrow will be another busy and wonderful day. Having some other friends/neighbors from our old neighborhood coming to visit, and they are also bringing lunch! Wow!!! We sure are blessed with friends "old and new". I think we are having an early St. Patrick's Day meal: Corned Beef and Cabbage, and all the trimmings! Should be wonderful! "

Well, today was that day, and it certainly met up to all expectations and even beyond!  Wow! God is so good to bring such special people into our lives...and then to allow us to continue that friendship even after we have moved away! What's neat is, the two couples in this group of neighbors are snowbirds, so they only come down south for a while during the winter months and then they are gone back to their northern homes for the rest of the year.  But their winter homes were in our neighborhood at our previous home, and so we became friends! The other gentleman of the group was our next door neighbor right behind us, a very unique and kind man who loves to cook and also loves to give gifts.  I just realized that I last wrote about this particular group of neighbors almost exactly one year ago HERE, when they visited in our previous home for a lasagna dinner!

This year they insisted on bringing the main course and dessert and the delicious home-made cornbread. I provided the salad(s).  Here's a few pictures from our day:

Actually, this picture is from the internet, because I forgot to take a picture of the corned beef and cabbage, red potatoes and carrots that our former neighbor who loves to cook brought. He cooked this whole meal in his pressure cooker, and it was so tender and delicious...we all wanted seconds!

My friend Dee made this delicious cornbread...the perfect bread to compliment the main course, slathered in fresh creamy butter...

I made a tossed green salad, served in this pretty new bowl that I got from "The Pioneer Woman". I love her dishes!!

And here is what's left of my dish of Lime Jello Cottage Cheese & Pineapple salad, also known as "Aunt Marion's Lime Jello".  We usually had this wonderful concoction at Christmas, but I made this today per my hubby's special request. Here is a link to a recipe I found online that is pretty much exactly the same:  https://homecookingmemories.com/lime-green-jello-salad-recipe-cottage-cheese-pineapple/

For dessert we had this wonderful pecan upside down cake, baked by my friend Joy:
I don't have the exact measurements for this recipe, but basically she mixed maybe two cups of pecan halves with brown sugar, tablespoon of water and melted butter, and put that in the bottom of a 9 x 13" baking pan. She then mixed up a yellow cake mix as per directions on the box, and pour the mixture over the pecan mixture, and baked it probably however long the recipe for the cake mix called for. I may need to contact my friend for more explicit directions, but there are some recipes out there on the internet that sound about the same. Click HERE: This one sounds about the same for the topping, but she used a cake mix for the cake, and didn't do the confectioner's sugar on top.
She served it with cool whip on top.  It was DELICIOUS!!!

Here's these two lovely ladies now...you can tell they are a lot of fun! They were chuckling before they went into the kitchen and washed and dried all the dishes! (Laughing at me telling them NOT to wash the dishes) And they were still chuckling even afterwards! What a blessing!

And here's the guys who came along.  We were also celebrating the man on the left's 80th birthday!! But we forgot to put the candles on the dessert, so we sang Happy Birthday to him after the fact...

While he tried to mix up the numbers so they didn't say "80"....nice try!

Oh yes, my hubby was there too.  He said we've celebrated his birthday enough for one year, so we didn't sing to him again...

I forgot to take a picture when the table was all set, but I wanted to get a picture of these lovely crystal candle holders again.  If you looked at the post from last year, you'll see that I featured them then as well. They are certainly worth mentioning. Our friend was pleased to see that I was still using them.

Yes, it was a wonderful day...such a blessing to have such dear friends want to travel all the way to our new home and even brought most of the food just so that we could all be together again! That truly humbled and touched our hearts. They know that I am getting ready for surgery, and they wanted to do something special without me having to do so much work. God is so good...and we are very thankful for these dear friends.

Here's some more thoughts from the Scriptures about neighbors and friends:

1 Corinthians 10:24 (ESV)
24 Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.

Luke 6:38 (ESV)
38 give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

1 Thessalonians 3:12  (NKJV)
12 And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you,

John 13:34-35 (ESV)
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I hope that you are encouraged by these verses as well as by the example of these dear ones who showed such love today. I know it is an encouragement to me, and an inspiration to be more willing to go the extra mile to bless someone else along life's pathway.  It doesn't have to be a full course meal, but even just sending a card, or calling a person on the phone to chat who may be lonely, or stopping by for a visit and taking a little gift of some kind...a plate of cookies or a little cake or nut bread or something you've made by hand. (or not! we aren't all that crafty...so it doesn't have to be home-made).  I know I often have "good intentions", but then I get busy and I never get around to doing what I had thought to do.  I'm not a big fan of Nike, but I do like their slogan..."Just do it!"   Don't keep making up excuses or wasting time and energy on things that are not worthwhile.  Look for ways to bless someone else along the way.  (I'm talking to myself here!)

Very thankful for these blessings today.  How about you? How has God blessed you today?

Friday Foto Friends - Continuing the Saga of the Family Gathering

Hello Friday Foto Friends! It has been a long week for us as we continue to work through the aftermath since the loss of my mother in law. We have mostly been just plain exhausted and have been trying to rest and not do too much.  Hence, I haven't done much writing or picture taking...so I thought I'd go back and finish what I started to tell you about a few weeks ago.
So here we go:
Recently I shared with you a bit about our family gathering/reunion that we went to in North Carolina.  (Click HERE for that story)   In that post I alluded to the original farmhouse and acreage that belonged to the three siblings that had never married and who "adopted" my brother's family/and vice versa...and that after the last member of that elderly trio of siblings passed on, their house and property were willed to my brother and his family, because they had literally loved and cared for them as if they were family until the very end.  Well, today I am going to show you some of the highlights of that original farmhouse, where my niece and her family now live and call home.   This house dates back to the 1700's...and there was even an old slave cabin on the property...which is being donated to the historical society of the area for preservation...

Anyway...this is the view of the house from the outside.  Sadly, that wonderful chimney is no longer functional...but it served several different fireplaces in that old house back in the day...(I wish I had taken more pictures inside...but I was too caught up in looking to get busy "snapping")

This was an old smokehouse that has seen better days...it was built with logs, and is not very tall...

Interesting OLD tree that was apparently hit by lightning at some point in time...makes a good hideout for squirrels, raccoons, and who knows what...

This is my lovely niece giving us a the grand tour...

Another side view of the old smokehouse...definitely has seen better days...

Lovely butterfly gardens...

Part of the garage building..you can probably guess that my niece is a bit of a "flower child"...she loves colorful decorations and all things natural and beautiful...
Another view of the garden next to the house...

Now THIS had to be my most favorite thing in the whole place...this wonderful old sink was on the enclosed back porch...a great place to wash up when you come in from the garden...

Isn't it wonderful?

I would LOVE to have an old sink like this...

This beautiful handmade table was lovingly created by my brother for his daughter...I believe it was made from wormy chestnut boards that he found on the property.  It is gorgeous...

Remember in the previous post about this story (see link above) I mentioned that the sister in the trio of siblings was crippled by polio, and that she did very exquisite needlework...Well, here is another example. This is a counted cross-stitch picture of this house, and the detail is remarkable. I was delighted to discover that my father had actually drawn the outline for this pattern for her.  My parents had visited these dear people many times on their trips up to N.C. to visit my brother and family. And so my father had taken an interest in this house and wanted to draw it...and then gave it to the lady of the house to create her cross stitch.  It truly is amazing..and quite large.

Now this is something I could not believe!  Here is original carpet that has been in that house for who knows how many years? We guessed maybe since the 1940's or early 50's, because I don't know that they made this kind of carpet pattern much after that era.  It is in one of the large drawing rooms that has never been used much, hence its excellent condition.  It is perfect for this house and is amazing in detail and color...and still feels thick and plush.

Okay...I know you are wondering about this picture...well...believe it or not, this paper wasp nest is on the ceiling of  the back porch, right above the back door.  We all went in through that door and none of us even noticed it...and we came back out that same door and the wasps did not buzz around a single head!  My niece says they just live there and never bother her or her animals as they come and go...

My niece has several dogs and cats...including THIS dog, whose name is "Happy".  And he is a very happy doggy as he belonged to the original owners of this home and has lived here since he was a pup...so my niece inherited "Happy" along with the house.  "Happy" was our official greeter and true tour guide.

And last but certainly not least, as we were finishing up our tour of the house and getting ready to leave, I couldn't help but notice this very poignant setting...my great-niece sitting and relaxing at the end of the day...
She is a lovely natural young woman with a beautiful singing voice and a promising future using her many talents...

That's all for this post...now let's go over and check and see what's cooking at Deb's place for Friday Foto Friends...

Here is a good thought for today:

Luke 6:38 (NKJV)

Give, and it will be given to you:
good measure, pressed down, shaken together,
and running over will be put into your bosom.
For with the same measure that you use,
it will be measured back to you.”

My translation: When we give and do for others without thought for personal gain, God will bless us in ways that we never dreamed possible. And that was the case in this situation. My brother's family knew and loved these dear folks who had no other family to care for them.  The two brothers had faithfully loved and cared for their crippled sister, sacrificing their own personal lives for the sake of her life. When the time came that they were no longer able to physically care for her themselves, my brother and his family stepped in and very lovingly cared for them all as if they were their own family, until the very end.  They did not do this expecting to gain anything, but God blessed their kindness by giving back to them in a beautiful way.
A very beautiful story, don't you agree?

Three Gifts Paired

Still following along with www.AnnVoskamp.com "Counting 1000 Gifts in 2012"...and today's gifts are to be "Three Gifts Paired".  Here goes:

1.  Homemade Vegetable Beef Soup simmering on the stove and Hot Cornbread fresh out of the oven.
It's what's for supper tonight!

2.  Mama Bear and Baby Bear on the Bear Crossing Sign created especially for me by my son today:

This is an early birthday present from my son.  It is in our front yard because
that is what it is...a bear crossing zone! Truly!!

3.  A sweet little Cup and Saucer from "Steubenville China~ Ivory", and a delightful yellow Creamer from "W.S. George Canarytone" "Lido" pattern.  The creamer was given to me as a gift from my dear friend and neighbor Maura, just because she saw that I admired it. (The REAL gift is my friend Maura!) The cup and saucer is a gift to myself as a purchase from our church "yard sale".   I love that both of these items were "Made in the USA",and they are vintage pieces.  The reason I was so attracted to the "Steubenville China" cup and saucer is because that is where my dear late Aunt Marion lived many years ago...and it made me think of her and miss her.

These are my 3 Gifts Paired for today.  I love this counting gifts idea...it helps me to appreciate so many wonderful items, precious people, and thoughtful ideas surrounding me each day.  Oftentimes we take the ordinary things and even the special people in our lives for granted...and we don't take time to recognize their unique qualities and talents.  I am trying to correct that flaw in my life.  I am also beginning to realize that I have been given so many gifts...and I want to become more of a "giver" than a "taker".

"Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom.  For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you."  Luke 6:38
