Tuesday 4: Names

Names

Welcome to Tuesday 4 kept up for Toni Taddeo our dear friend who was taken home to God on December 14, 2019. She would be pleased to know you all join in.

Note from Pam (me)
I did not realize that this Tuesday, December 14th, would be the anniversary of Toni's passing.  I am so glad we are keeping up this meme in memory of her. (Thanks to our friend Annie). Toni was such an inspiration to all of us who "knew" her, even if we only knew her through her blogs...that's how most of us know each other, and I feel like we are a pretty close family.

Speaking of our blogging family, most of you have heard by now of the sudden passing of the beloved son of our friend Linda Conley at Just Simply Linda.  Please keep Linda and her husband Dave in your thoughts and prayers as they grieve the tragic loss of their precious son Liam, their only child.

"Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted."
Matthew 5:4

Now on to today's topic:
This week let's talk about your name!

1. What name would you take if you had to change your name?
 I don't think I would want to change my name. I can't imagine myself being anyone else. It was hard enough to change from my maiden name to my married name...I had to get used to being called Mrs. John Steiner instead of just plain Pam Mursch. I went through a little bit of an identity crisis at that time, but that was over 52 years ago, and I've been Pamela Mursch Steiner ever since, and now I wouldn't want to change that ever again. It's who I am.  BTW, most people who know me just call me "Pam". But I like the name "Pamela", and have often said that name is my "alter ego"...the old fashioned, more "victorian"  feminine form of me...rather than the more modern, rather outdoorsy active  "Pam" side of me.

By the way, did you see my last post, where I showed you this picture of the three "Pamela's" in our church:
It seems rather strange that for such a small church there should be three of us in one place! But also in my school class grades 1-12, there were two of us Pam's.  We always thought we were pretty special. LOL. (there were only 50 students in our graduating class).

2. What is the meaning of your name.. how about your last name, do you know it's meaning?
"The name Pamela is primarily a female name of English origin that means All Honey, Sweetness. The name was invented by Sir Philip Sidney for a poem titled "Arcadia" in the 1580s; used by Samuel Richardson for his novel Pamela in the 1740s."

I just looked up my last name (Maiden) Mursch: According to Ancestry.com

Mursch Name Meaning: German: nickname for a frail person, from Middle High German mursch ‘brittle’.

I really don't agree with that description. I have not met any of the Mursch family who I would consider to be "frail" or "brittle".  Of course, none of us are totally what our maiden name was. We are a combination of both parents.

3. Do you think you fit your name and it's meaning? Yes, I am surprised by the description  of Pamela above, and somewhat humbled and blessed at the same time, but I do believe that I possess many of those attributes, although I'm not too sure about the ingenious ideas part....LOL.

4. Were you named after anyone or given your name for a specific reason? How about your kids?
I know I've told this story before...Here's ONE link, but there are others.  My birth name is Pamela Anne...Anne with an "e", like Anne of Green Gables.  Because I was born a redhead, my mother wanted to name me after her favorite heroine, Anne of Avonlea or Anne of Green Gables.  I'm not sure why my parents chose the Pamela part of my name, but I definitely know why they chose Anne for my middle name.

As far as our kids are concerned, our oldest son is named after several people. His first name is William, which is after both of his grandfathers and one of this Great-Grandfathers. (as well as a couple of great-great grandfathers)

This is his paternal grandfather: (William G. Steiner)

This is his maternal grandfather. William F. Mursch: (my dad and mom on their wedding day)

And this is his great-grandpa William H. Mursch, my paternal grandfather:

His middle name is Benton, which is what we call him, and that is after my maternal grandfather: Benton Tedlie:

Our other two sons were named a little differently: Matthew Everette wasn't really named after anyone, but his name "Matthew" means "Gift of God", and that he was. Matthew is now with God in heaven, but he was God's gift to us for the 41 years we enjoyed him here. His middle name of Everette we picked at random because it just seemed to sound good with Matthew. I added the extra "e" to the end of it because I thought that looked extra nice, kind of like my middle name with the "e" on it.

Our youngest son is named John Scott. We call him Scott.  He is named after his daddy, my hubby John, (who, incidentally was named John Frank for his two grandfathers),  but the name Scott was chosen by our two older sons.  We asked them what they wanted to name their new baby brother, (because I really didn't have any boy names picked out, thinking for sure that the third child would surely be a girl and we didn't have "gender reveal" tests back then)  and they said "Scotty", after the little boy who lived across the street from us.  And so we named him John Scott, and then learned afterwards that the little boy across the street was also named "John Scott". So...there you have it. We have no clue where that little boy is today (of course he'd be probably in his late 50's by now).

This is a favorite picture of what I call "My Three Sons", taken way back before they all went their separate ways of college, marriage, work, etc....while they were still just that, "Our three sons".  Of course they always belonged to Jesus too. Our children are a gift to us, on loan from God.
It is our job to:
  "Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

Matthew, Benton, Scott

No matter what name we may give our children, or what name we are called ourselves, the most important name we have is that our name is written down in the "Lamb's Book of Life" in heaven. There can be no more important name than that.
Except for this one:

The Names of Jesus:
The One whose Birth we will soon be celebrating:

Merry CHRISTmas!!

Note from Annie regarding this Tuesday 4 Meme: "As always thank you so much for joining in and making this a success. It just means the world to me. And, remember I am always looking for topics and questions so leave a comment if you have any!"

An Advent Message: "A Baby Does Change Everything" Updated

A Baby Changes Everything updated from 2015...nothing to change about this message.  That precious Baby in the Manger truly did change EVERYTHING for this old world, and for each of us, if we will pay attention to the message He brings...and claim it for our own.

Merry Christmas dear friends!

Do you remember what it felt like when you first learned you were going to have a baby?  Depending upon your circumstances, it was either great joy and elation, or it was possibly great fear and concern. If you were unmarried, not only fear, but shame, anxiety over how you would be able to take care of the child, what would your parents say...what would your boyfriend say? Would he stand by you, or run away? Would he demand you have an abortion, or force you to give the baby away? Would he love you enough to marry you and give the child a home?

Even if you were married, there were a lot of questions and concerns. Will the child be healthy? Would your husband be a good father? Will you be a good mother? Will you be able to properly provide for your child? Will it be a boy, or a girl? What shall you name him or her?

Regardless of your situation and how long you've waited for a child or whether or not you were prepared for this event at all...one thing is for certain:  "A Baby Does Change Everything!"

Now think about Mary, the mother of Jesus...single, yet betrothed to a man named Joseph. Young, pure, a virgin, and faithful to her fiance' Joseph.  Can you imagine what it must have been like for her? First of all, there was the Angel Gabriel...making such a strange announcement...and the fear and wonder over how that could even be possible.  (Luke 1;26-38).  "A baby? Me?  But I haven't even known a man that way!"  But the Angel told her "For with God nothing will be impossible..."

And then there was Joseph, a carpenter...hard working, honest, a good and noble man. And his beautiful young fiance' is pregnant...and he knows it can't be his child.  And another Angel...this time in a dream...but a very real dream  (see Matthew 1:18-25) comes to Joseph and tells him not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife...because the Child she is carrying is conceived by the Holy Spirit...and His name will be called Jesus..."for He will save His people from their sins."  Can you imagine how Joseph must have felt?  Talk about shock and awe!  But what an amazing young man he was!  He did just as the angel told him, and not only took Mary to be his wife, but he did not "know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son."    He did not claim his rights as a husband until the Child was born.  And he called His name Jesus.

Yes, a baby certainly does change everything!    In this case, this Baby changed the world!  This Baby changed my life from being lost and without hope to being found and full of hope and assured of a heavenly home forever. How?  Because this Baby didn't just come to live and be a good man, a carpenter's son...but this Baby came to die.  He came to die so that we might have everlasting life. This Baby was not just any baby.  This Baby was the very Word of God:

"In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
And the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness did not comprehend it."
John 1:1-5

"And the Word became flesh
and dwelt among us,
and we beheld His glory,
the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,
full of grace and truth."
John 1:14

Yes, a baby does change everything!  Especially this Baby,
who came to save His people from their sins.

I woke up this morning singing a song...and then when I got into my car to go to work, that very song was already playing on the radio..."A Baby Changes Everything", by Faith Hill.  So I knew I was supposed to tell you about it...click on the picture to enjoy this beautiful message in song.  I hope you know this "Baby"...and that He has already changed everything for you.  If not, I pray that before this Advent /Christmas season is over, you will come to know and love Him...like He already knows and loves you...yes, you!  Why not let Him change everything for you? That would be the very best Christmas present ever!

The Secret Garden Chronicles-Day 2 "I Am Your Servant"

This is Day 2 of The Secret Garden Chronicles...and I must say I am a bit overwhelmed...by God and His love...and by you, my friends...and how you have blessed me with your overwhelming response to how God is ministering to us through this place. Thank you for your words of encouragement and affirmation on yesterday's post.  You are truly an inspiration to me, and also a confirmation that God is in this new adventure in the Secret Garden.  I truly hope you will continue to come along with me as the Lord shares His message through His Word and His creation.

Lord, I am Your servant...I am listening for Your voice...

Micah 6:8

"He has shown you, O man (woman!),
what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you...
  1. But to do justly
  2. To love mercy
  3. And to walk humbly with your God?
Micah 7:7

"Therefore I will look to the Lord;
I will wait for the God of my salvation;
My God will hear me."

Not  sure where all of this is leading, Lord...

     So I started to sing:

"Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou has died...
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer
Blessed Lord,
to Thy Precious bleeding side.

I am Thine O Lord,
I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith
and be closer drawn to Thee...

(Chorus)

Consecrate me now
to Thy service, Lord,
By the power of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
and my will be lost in Thine.

(Chorus)

Oh, the pure delight of a single hour
that before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer,
and with Thee, my God,
I commune as friend with friend!"

"Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou has died...
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer
Blessed Lord,
to Thy Precious bleeding side."

(Draw Me Nearer, by Fanny Crosby)

 Psalm 73:28 says:

"But it is good for me
to draw near to God;
I have put my trust in the Lord God,
that I may declare
ALL YOUR WORKS!"

So, Lord, Is this why I am being drawn to this Secret Garden...so that I may draw nearer to YOU, and then that I may declare ALL YOUR WORKS to others?

My friend Gayle Belanger writes in her book Live Free, The Inner Journey To Healing, (pgs. 22-23)

"In order for your inner man or woman to commune with God, you must intentionally
prepare yourself and your surroundings.

First, find a favorite place that is quiet and free from distractions.
It is of utmost importance that you take time each day to commune in a
beautiful, peaceful and loving space (location) with your Lord.
Preferably, the same place each time.
I find the anointing of His Spirit builds up in that spot and
it becomes a sacred place.
As you make this your daily routine, you will find the Lord
waiting there for you."

Oh yes, Gayle, You hit it right on the head with this!  Every day I am seeing more and more how extra special this place is...it has been set apart as a place to commune with my Lord; a place where I can draw nearer to Him...and He is there waiting for me, in the stillness, the quietness, the calm, the beauty...

Even the birds as they fly to and fro going about their business...they pause a moment to watch...
and I believe they too sense God's Presence here...and then they go on about their way, blessing me with their sweet songs!

Yes, "I am Thine O Lord, I have heard Thy Voice..."

As this precious time of listening to God's Voice drew to a close, I thought about what the Lord was teaching me...and then another old hymn came to mind...

"Jesus, I would faithful be,
Give me the power, give me the power...
Jesus I would walk with Thee,
Each passing hour, each passing hour.

In Thy footsteps place my feet,
As Thou dost will, as Thou dost will;
And if thorns my pathway meet,
Bid me be still, be still."

(Jesus I Would Faithful Be" by J.O. Hillyer)

"BE STILL, AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD;
I WILL BE EXALTED AMONG THE NATIONS,
I WILL BE EXALTED IN THE EARTH!"
Psalm 46:10

Thank You, Lord, for speaking to me today. Thank You for drawing me nearer to Thee.  Now help me to be faithful to my task..."In Thy footsteps place my feet...and if thorns my pathway meet...Bid me be still...be still!"  Amen.

Now for some practical thoughts concerning spending this time in the Secret Garden with the Lord...I thought of some things I need to remember each day:

  1. My Bible
  2. My Journal
  3. An ink pen that writes smoothly!
  4. A hymnbook because the Lord keeps reminding me of special songs and I want to get the words right!
  5. My camera...(of course!)
  6. And...this should be #1:  An open heart, open soul, open mind, and open ears!!!
Here are a few more pictures of my latest project for the Secret Garden! (I told someone this isn't finished yet...always something new to add!)

We have a new next door neighbor in the house behind us...and this old wire planter was on the back porch...and he said he was going to be taking some things to the dump...so I asked him if he intended to take this to the dump as well...and he asked me if I wanted it, and I said yes, I'd very much like to have it for my Secret Garden...  Yes...I know it is all rusty and ugly...but so were some of us before the Lord cleaned us up and changed us and made us a new creature!!!
 And so this morning, armed with a can of white spray paint...this little planter became a useful and beautiful vessel for the Secret Garden....

I needed a small table beside the bench to put my cup of tea or water on when I sit out here...and this little "table" is perfect!
So, thank You, Lord...and thank you, new neighbor!!!

Here's one more "new thing" in the garden:

The little camellia bush that my friend Karen gave me is blooming again!!!  Isn't it lovely?  Thank you, Karen...and thank YOU Lord, for Your beauty all around us!!!

Yes, Lord, I AM YOUR servant... and I have heard Your voice...
"And it told Thy love to me;"

"Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord...
By the Power of grace divine;
Let my soul look UP with a steadfast hope,
and MY WILL be LOST in Thine!"

Amen!!

Where Do I Go? Who Do I Run To?

Someone asked me the other day who I had to lean on when going through difficult trials. There was and is only one answer:

"I will love You, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my ROCK and my FORTRESS and my DELIVERER;
My GOD, my STRENGTH, in Whom I will trust;
My SHIELD and the HORN OF MY SALVATION, my STRONGHOLD.
I will call upon the Lord,
Who is worthy to be praised;
So shall I be saved from my enemies.

The pangs of death surrounded me,
and the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.
The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.

In my distress I called upon the Lord,
and cried out to my God;
He heard my voice from His temple,
and my cry came before Him,
even to His ears."
Psalms 18:1-6

"He sent from above, He took me;
He drew me out of many waters.
He delivered me from my strong enemy,
from those who hated me,
for they were too strong for me.
They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
but the LORD was my SUPPORT.
He also brought be out into a broad place;
He DELIVERED me,
because HE DELIGHTED IN ME!"
Psalm 18:16-19

"For who is God, except the Lord?
And who is a rock, except our God?
Is is GOD who arms me with strength,
and makes my way perfect.
He makes my feet like the feet of deer,
and sets me on my high places."
Psalm 18:31-33

"The Lord lives!!
Blessed be my ROCK!
Let the God of my salvation be exalted."
Psalm 18:46

AND I CRIED OUT "HALLELUJAH!!"
It is God and no other Who has saved me!
It is God and no other Who has rescued me!
There is NO GOD like JEHOVAH!!!

My dear friend...Let me tell you from personal experience...Jesus is the Rock that you can cling to when all the world has turned against you.  He is the ONLY Savior Who will rescue you from sinking sand and the overwhelming floods of life.  There is no other who can save you. There is no other who can restore you. There is no other who can carry you when you cannot take one. more. step.

Do you know this Jesus?  Have you learned to call upon His Name? That's all you need to know.
He is all you need to know.  Call upon HIS MIGHTY NAME, and your cry will come before
God Almighty..."even to His ears!" (see verse 6 above)

I don't think there is anything else I need to add to this.  God's Word is true. He does not lie.
If you are lost and feeling all alone, cry out to the Rock of YOUR Salvation!
He will not turn you away.

"Therefore I will give thanks to YOU, O Lord, among the Gentiles,
and sing praises to YOUR NAME!"
Psalm 18:49

The Food that Satisfies

How often have we cried, "I'm starving!"  "When's dinner going to be ready?" "I'm so hungry I could eat a cow!"
One of our family gatherings...waiting to be fed...

As I look back on my life I know I've said that zillions of times...especially as a growing child.  And how often have we heard our own children say the same things? Probably more times than we could possibly count.

Now, let's tell the truth...how many of those zillions of times were we truly starving? How often were we (or our children) really so hungry that we could "eat a cow"?   (A nice juicy steak might be nice...)

Yes, I am well aware that there is tremendous hunger in the world, and possibly closer than we think, and it is an immensely horrific problem for millions of people.  As much as I would love to solve world hunger, that is not what I am really talking about tonight. That is an issue that is larger than my capacity to solve.

No, the kind of hunger that is really on my mind is soul hunger.  If your soul could speak, how often do you think it would cry, "I'm starving!" ?  Probably more often than we care to admit.  Could it be possible that a person could attend church every week, listen to Christian music, attend all kinds of "Bible Studies" or other spiritual help groups, conferences, and concerts and still have a starving soul?

Yes...highly possible.  How could that be? I mean, wouldn't that be the right kind of "diet" to have a well nourished soul?  It should be. But I've seen people come and go from church to church, Bible study to Bible study, all manner of conferences and groups, etc., etc, etc., and still not grow and mature in matters of the soul. They never can get enough food to satisfy the hunger of the heart and soul. Why?

Perhaps because we get so caught up in the frenetic search for answers and just the right "food" that we overlook the most basic important nutrient of all...a total ingestion of the best food ever offered; The Bread of Life...Jesus Christ.

Jesus said to His disciples in John 6:35

"I Am the bread of life.  He who comes to Me shall never hunger,
and he who believes in Me shall never thirst."

And in verse 48-51

"I Am the bread of life.
Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
This is the bread which comes down from heaven,
that one may eat of it and not die.
I am the living bread which came down from heaven.
If anyone eats of this bread,
he will live forever;
and the bread that I shall give is My flesh,
which I shall give for the life of the world."

The rulers and disciples did not truly understand what Jesus was saying to them at the time...and for a complete discourse on this I commend the whole 6th chapter of John's Gospel to your reading.

But what we need today, what I need today, is a buffet table full of the Bread of Life...open for you and me to partake of freely...to breathe Him into our hearts and minds so fully that we no longer crave the running to and fro seeking every special program, every marvelous speaker, the over abundant diet of  constant activity of worship, studies, preaching, teaching...having "itching ears", heaping "up for themselves teachers" and possibly even having turned "our ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables."  (See 2 Timothy 4:1-5)

You may wonder how can someone get too much of Bible study and preaching and teaching, etc., and not be fed properly?  It's simple...

We get so busy chasing after more knowledge and the better "worship experience" that we lose sight of the One Who stands there waiting for us to

"Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me,
for I am gentle and lowly in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
Matthew 11:28-30

Now, please don't think that I am against going to church, Bible Studies, conferences, etc., etc.  But on the other hand, the warning is this...Don't become so addicted to eating more and more "food"...even when it is so-called food for the soul, that you overlook the most valuable nourishing meal of all: Jesus Christ, the living Lord, the Bread of Life who gave His life for your soul...Who stands at your heart's door knocking, waiting on you to let Him enter into the innermost part of your very being...
Warner Sallman's picture of Jesus Standing at the door knocking

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears My voice and opens the door,
I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me."
Revelation 3:20

Yes, this is the food that comes down from heaven...Jesus Christ...knocking at your door (and mine)...waiting for us to invite Him in...to dine with us...for eternity! How wonderful is that?

Lord Jesus, I'm starving...I'm hungry, hungry for more of YOU.  Help me stop the frantic frenzy of chasing after the rich foods that will never satisfy...and fill me with YOU...and YOU alone. YOU ARE the Bread of Life who came down from heaven....seeking for me. Please come in and dine with me...forever. Amen.

Post Holiday Thoughts

It is Sunday afternoon, the Sunday after New Year's...and the last day of the holiday season.  There is now a bare spot where the Christmas tree once stood, and all the other odds and ends of Christmas decorations are pretty much put away for another year.

As I packed up the Nativity Set,  I said good bye to the Baby Jesus, the Shepherd, the Wise Men, Mary and Joseph and the Angel until next year.  As I did so I thought to myself, "Well, not really good bye to the Baby Jesus. I'll be keeping Him in my heart all year long...and not as a baby, either.  It's the full-grown resurrected coming back again someday soon Jesus that sticks closer than a brother to me all year long that I'll be keeping in my heart."

That's the most important and significant reflection that I want to focus upon in the New Year...(FOCUS...that's my new One Word for 2015!)  Jesus--Who sticks closer than a brother or a mother or a father or a husband or a sister or child or friend...Jesus, the One Who will be with us through thick and thin, in good times and bad times.  Jesus, My God and My Savior, the One Who rescued me from sin and keeps me in His arms, safe from the snares of this old world.

I believe this prayer of the Apostle Paul to the Church at Ephesus is an appropriate prayer for us as we begin this New Year:

"Therefore I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.
For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
from Whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
that He would grant you,
according to the riches of His glory,
to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man (woman!),
that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;
that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is
the width and length and depth and height~
to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge;
that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly
above all that we ask or think,
according to the power that works in us,
to HIM be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations,
forever and ever.
Amen."
Ephesians 3:13-21

What a beautiful prayer! Read through it again, and apply it to your own life and heart...this prayer was prayed for you and me..to be strengthened (my One Word for 2014!), to be rooted and grounded in love, to KNOW the LOVE of Christ, to be Filled with all the fullness of God...all action words! But the action isn't all mine to do on my own...The strengthening will come through God's Spirit...Christ Himself will DWELL in my heart through faith...and it is God Who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above ALL that we ask or think!  He is the One Who will do this in us and through us according to His power that is working in us!

Yes, I do believe the "Baby Jesus" will be quite active in my life in this new year. As I said above,
it is the  "full-grown resurrected coming back again someday soon Jesus that sticks closer than a brother to me all year long that I'll be keeping in my heart."  He is the One!

"To HIM be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations,
forever and ever.
Amen"

Is There Facebook in Heaven?

A Message to Matthew on his Facebook page from his Mom (me), 3 days after he crossed over from earth to heaven:

How is it that there are no messages on your page? Where did they all go? How I wish I could send you a message that you could read with your heavenly eyes. But maybe you can. For all I know, you may be standing next to me, watching me write, and feeling my sorrow. I don't know what you are able to see and hear and do now that you are on the other side of this life. I have a feeling you are so busy in heaven, shaking hands with all the "greats" from all time, and meeting all the old folks from "Ancestry.com" that you looked up so diligently...but most of all, you are sitting at the feet of Jesus...bowing in His presence...praising the King of kings and Lord of lords. You are there in His presence...and yet, so am I. I am also in His presence...just a breath away from where you are.

Someday we will be reunited and what a day of joy that will be. Until then, we will keep your flame burning bright. We will hold your dear ones close, and we will look toward the heavens each night and whisper our prayers to the One Who now holds you close.

Matthew on his 41st birthday, just 3 months before he passed
from earth to heaven.

Sure gonna miss that boy!

We love you Matthew Steiner, our #2!

Until then,
Love Always,
Mom and Dad and your brothers and wifey and son and Nanny.
