Thursday Thankfulness

Good Thursday Morning! I hope this day finds you all feeling '"fine as frog's hair" and warm and cozy wherever you are.  Not sure where that particular saying came from...some old country friend of mine used to say it, and it just seems to fit this morning. LOL.   (Do frogs have hair??? If they do, it must be very fine indeed! LOL)  🐸

It's currently 51 degrees here at 6:30 a.m., and our high is only expected to reacy 69 today, with clear skies and a wind chill that currently makes it feel like 47 degrees! That's a little chilly for us Floridians on a late October morning, but I'm not complaining. It feels like fall!!  And because there's a bit of a nip in the air, last night we had our first pot of chili for the season!  It was a communal effort...Rose and Benton and the grandpups came over, and we put our ingredients together and made some delicious chili!

This is my bowl, with shredded cheese, sour cream and fritos added for extra good yumminess!
Hubby was loving his bowl of chili too...and he says to thank you all for your prayers for his bout with the shingles...thankfully we did definitely catch it in time, and after the week of what he called taking the "big nasty" pill 3xday, he's completely well with no issues at all! Well, no shingles issues, that is! LOL.  We all have SOME kind of issues, don't we??? LOL.

Here's me with my bowl:

Sweet Rose with hers:
And sweet Benton with his bowl....now can we all eat please before it gets cold?

And guess what else we had?  I baked the first pumpkin pie of the season! Forgot to take a picture before we cut it...

Here's my piece of the pie!  It was yummy delicious too!

Now, another reason to be thankful...one of the reasons the kids came over for supper last night was because Benton had been busy building something special for our porch kitties...I heard yesterday was National Cat Day, and so it was fitting that something special should be done for them...

With the colder weather coming, I've been concerned about them having a warmer place to snuggle up and stay warm.  So Benton built these two "cat cribs"... and Blackie was right there ready to inspect and check them out as soon as we put them on the porch:

He jumped right inside and had a looksy...
He sniffed it all over and then jumped back out and went on his way.

I put some little rugs in the bottom and a blanket, and although I couldn't get Blackie to go back inside it while we were there, I am hoping with the colder weather he and Sunshine will both be curious enough to try them out.

I am thankful for our kids, who do so many wonderful things for us, as well as just being here and being good "kids".  We are blessed to have them close by, and that is a blessing I don't take lightly!

It's hard to believe it's already the end of October and tomorrow is Halloween. I know many of you don't "celebrate Halloween", and I really don't celebrate it either. But I do participate in one way that I think is meaningful.  Our neighborhood actually gets a lot of trick or treaters, and to me, I think it's a good way to show some love and appreciation for the children of our community.  We've never had any unpleasant things happen on Halloween here, just a lot of little children with their parents, walking through the neighborhood dressed in their fun and pretty and interesting costumes, "begging for candy".  I love to welcome them and make over their costumes, and give them lots of smiles.  Last year I started a new tradition of including a card with a scripture verse written on it with their little ziploc bag of candy.  It is my hope and prayer that the parents will take the time to read the verse to their children (or the child read it for themselves), and that it will raise a question as to what it means or where did it come from.  I call it "planting a seed of faith".  We just never know how that little verse of God's Word might take root and bloom in the heart and life of the child and/or the parents.  This might be the only opportunity we have to share the love of Christ with these little ones.

I know not everyone has a lot of children come into their neighborhoods anymore, and a lot of places don't even do door to door trick or treating.  But if your community does, maybe think about the opportunity you could have to share some words of hope and love and faith with others before you turn off your porch light.  Remember, Jesus said in Matthew 19:14 ~

... “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”

This might be the only opportunity these little ones have to hear any positive things about God.  Just a thought to ponder...

Okay...enough said...I hope everyone has a beautiful rest of your October days. And don't forget to "fall back" with your clock this weekend!!!

  1. It's 46* here this morning. Plus the wind is blowing. Brrr! This is definitely comfort food weather.
Nice little nest boxes for kitties. They'll be sure to stay warm and cozy in those. 🎃

  2. Well.... you just made my decision on what is for dinner. It is cool here as well, so I think it's time for me to fix a big pot of "Mable's Chili". My son-in-laws call me Mable when I serve chile. I make it from scratch and there usually is not a drop left in the pan when the guys come to eat. Hopefully y'all did not have as heavy of winds as what we had yesterday...my goodness, it blew many of my big pot plants completely over. This is a great idea of including a scripture verse in the baggie for the kids. Who knows what hands that verse might end up in (including adult parents) and who knows the lives that might be changed. Wishing you all a very Blessed Thursday Pamela.. big SWEET hugs

  3. We had chili this week too. I've never put fritos in mine but it sounds so good!
Love the kitty boxes and I think they will too.
Your little treat bags with the verses are such a good idea. We rarely get trick or treaters here. I always buy a small bag of candy just in case... And Bob usually eats it!

    1. Dear Diane...I just now read about your husband's illness. I am so very sorry to hear about this. I will definitely be praying for you both during this time. May God give you the strength you need for each new day. He is with you, and He will never leave you nor forsake you. (((HUGS)))

  6. Hi Pamela! Your chili looks really good. I bet the pie was too! I hope the kitties get used to the boxes. I like the idea you have for the test bags. Enjoy your cool weather. We were in the high 90’s yesterday and low 90’s today. I am going to Disneyland today and it will be mid 80’s there.Taking my safari hat to protect my face. Enjoy your day!

  7. I like those kitty cribs Benton built. I’m sure the cats will figure it out on those cold nights. Cats do like cozy spaces.

We’ve been in the 80’s but it gets cold at night. We’re supposed to get down to the 70’s which is my most comfortable temperature range.

Enjoy your Halloween with the children. Take care.

  8. What a great idea for the scripture in the candy bags. You never know what the seed you plant will do. The kitty cribs are cute! I'm looking forward to that first bite of pumpkin pie.

  9. Tell Benton that I love those cat beds, Pamela. He is so talented! And I love the idea of putting those scripture cards with the candy for Halloween, too. We never know whose hearts and minds these words may touch for Jesus. Oh, and it's about that time for chili here, too, at the Orlando Cafe. Y'all's looks scrumptious! Blessings!

  11. Ummm, yummm, that chili looks so, so good. The Fritos and cheese make it just about perfect !
I love seeing you and your "kids" around the table for dinner. There's nothing like it to my way of thinking.
Great "Kitty Kribs" too. I'm sure Blackie will be back to test it out again.
We don't have many kiddos for Trick or Treat now. It seems that they have a way of growing up (:0)
I always try to make a big deal over the costumes and chat with the kids and their parents. We do buy candy that we like to eat in case there are left overs haha.
So happy to read that your hubby's shingles are healed completely.
    Have a great day.

  12. Just dropped by before going to your other blogs. WE lived on Lake Dora just behind the jail and court house for a few years. WEnt to Deltona, then back to Leesburg. Would have kept the place and dock if the HOA had allowed us to rent it out for a spell while we went back on the road. We know exactly what you mean about your home town once being a 'small town' where every one knew everyone. Sherry's Hometown Belmont, NC is the same way, now it is a small city and you no longefr know your postman. LOL Thanks for stopping by the Shipslog. We sod the place in Leesburg to our son, now we are staying at Southern Palms RV resort for a couple more weeks before heading back to NC to move furniture from one house to another.
The best to you take care .
PS it is amazing we got all the rain and you none.

    1. So glad to make your acquaintance finally!! I know right where that "RV Resort" is. We actually used to live up the road in Biscayne Heights and also Raintree Harbor at one time. I also used to work at Lake Yale Baptist Conference Center for a while, which is further out that way. I hope you have a safe trip to NC. We just got back from a vacation in the north GA mountains, and stepped over the state line into NC and also TN for a little "ride". Such beautiful country up there! Oh, and when I grew up in Tavares, I knew the postman quite well...he was my father! LOL. Again, that was back in the olden days when everyone knew each other. And my mother worked at the courthouse in the Sheriff's Dept....when the infamous Willis V. McCall was still sheriff! She also worked for his son Malcolm McCall when he became Sheriff! If you don't know about them, you should read up on the history of Lake County. Times were MUCH different then.
So fun to talk to someone who knows where I came from! Take care and God bless!

  13. Ooooh, your chili and pumpkin pie looks wonderful! This CHILLY morning I was "in the mood" but didn't make time to do it "from scratch" and instead opened two cans of no-beans Hormel and combined with soft-scrambled cheesy eggs. (An old West Texas tradition, I've pictures on my FB page.) When I do get around to make the real stuff, I want to try your version with sour cream and Fritos. Yum!
I'm so glad John is fully recovered ... also, that Sunshine and Blackie have new dorm rooms!

  14. The kitty beds Benton made are so nice and I hope your boys figure out that they are for them to stay warm in!! Keep us posted! Your chili looks yummy and I like sour cream with mine, too! Sending a hug, and a Happy Friday!!

  15. Hello Pam! Those are beautiful boxes that Benton made for your kitties. I sure hope they get used to them so they can enjoy the comfort and love you've provided for them. You are all such sweet people to care for God's creatures. The chili and especially the pumpkin pie looks delicious. I haven't had pumpkin pie for awhile but I did make pumpkin crumble the last time we went camping and I shared it with the couple in the spot next to them. We shared phone numbers and we hope to see them again sometime soon when we're camping.
We also put sour cream, cheese and Dennis adds a spoonful of sugar. I use regular soup crackers but he likes Fritos too!
The scripture card is a great idea for the little bag of candy. We don't have anyone come to the condo but I do enjoy seeing costumes. I may go to Mandy's for awhile so I can see some little ones.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  17. Sorry to hear that Dennis had shingles! (being away has me behind on my blog friends' posts so I am catching up!) The family meal and the new cat beds is a good reason to get together!

  18. Pam: Your faith note idea would work at Trunk and Treats. They seem to be popular here in Indiana.
