The First Day of Summer: A Day of Rest and Rejoicing

It is the First Day of Summer and I have declared that today shall be a day of REST!!  I know, you are probably thinking, "it isn't Sunday or the Sabbath yet..."  But my body tells me it is to be for me a "day of rest".  We traveled last week, came home and had something to do every single day since we got home, and today is the first day that we don't have anything that we absolutely HAVE to do, so I am declaring it a day of rest!!  Besides, it is supposed to get into the high 90's today, and the humidity seems to be way above 100%, if that is possible...so it is a good day to stay indoors and try to keep cool...and rest

We started the day with our time of devotions... We read Psalm 97 and also Matthew 6:7-15, which included The Lord's Prayer.

Verse 1 of Psalm 97 says:

"The Lord reigns;
Let the earth rejoice;
Let the multitude of isles be glad!"

After reading our devotions we took our morning walk, (before it got too hot)  which is a time of joy and blessing and worship for me as I thank the Lord for His beauty that surrounds us, and for His marvelous creation that He has given for us to enjoy:

 Even the ponds and lakes reflect the Glory of God

"The heavens declare His righteousness;
and all the peoples see His glory."
Psalm 97:6

The Sand Hill Crane family was gathered together, apparently getting their breakfast....

And then this deer stepped out in front of me...

and she leaped across the road to the safety and security of the woods...

But then she stopped and waited to see what I would do...(and of course I stood there and watched her and took her picture! What else would I do?)

She seemed to want to get a better look at me...checking me out to see if I was a threat...

She actually even stepped toward me for a little closer look, and I just spoke softly to her and reassured her I meant her no harm...

She's thinking about that...

And then she turned to go further into the woods...

It wasn't until I got home and looked at my pictures up close that I noticed this deer is a mama...if you look between her legs and under her belly you will see that she is a "nursing mama"....

And then she moved on into the woods, and took one more look back at me, and I decided to go on my way and leave her alone...perhaps her fawn is hidden there in that thicket...!

I am comparing this picture below to those above....this one was taken several weeks ago in our yard, and at the time I said that I thought this deer was "with child"...and if you look at the markings on her face compared with the one above, I believe this may well be the same deer...and now I know my suspicions were correct!  So now I will definitely be on the alert to watch for the baby fawn(s) to appear.
"Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous,
and give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name."
Psalm 97:12

Okay, back to my "resting" for  the day.  In honor of the First Day of Summer I had this for breakfast:

Cheerios with fresh peaches, blueberries, and strawberries on top! Yummy!!

So, how are YOU celebrating the first day of summer?

  1. What a beautiful location you live in! So nice to see so much nature. That cereal looks delicious and now I have a craving for some fresh peaches, but it will be a while yet before they are in season here. As for celebrating the first day of summer....I'm keeping an eye on my husband, who is home due to knee surgery yesterday, and my grandson, who is napping, while his parents go do do something for a bit. Mom and Dad took vacation this week so they could move into their new house and then closing got pushed back to next week. They are getting tired of hanging out at home (especially when it isn't even their home!).

    1. Oh my! You will be needing that 'day of rest' when things get "back to normal" at your household. Meanwhile, may God give you the strength you need each day to take care of hubby, grandson and "moving family". God bless you!!

  2. I love your photos of God's beautiful nature! It's amazing that you got so close to the doe! We're celebrating the first day of summer in 109 degrees and tomorrow will be 108 degrees (next week we'll be 'blessed' with a day of 111 degrees) ... welcome to summer in Arizona! Your breakfast looks wonderful! God bless you!

    1. OOh, I don't think I could handle those temps., but at least you don't have the humidity to go with it. That would make it totally unbearable. Actually, my zoom lens got that close to the doe...I was at least 50 feet away from her, which was still pretty close for her to stay there that long. I think perhaps her fawn was in the woods, and she was standing guard in case I did come too close. I wasn't going to risk it. I do hope you have good AC at our house!!

  3. Pamela, I love how you write from your heart, sharing your life and how the Lord is so central. Strangely enough, the first day of summer here is so not like summer--it's coming though!

    I think that humidity CAN feel like more than 100%.:)

    The first day of summer for me is a pretty typical day of doing what needs doing.

    Blessings!

    1. Thank you Kim. I hope that your week is going well...and that Sunday is going to be a very beautiful and perfect day for you in every way... My normal first day of summer is pretty typical too, but today I did try to just relax and take it easy. It's been a busy week, and my body was saying slow down. Blessings to you as well.

  4. All your photos are terrific, Pamela, as always, but I truly loved the ones of the deer. We often see them in our woods, and love getting glimpses of the little fawns when they appear. Hope mama will bring her offspring for a visit!
    Oh, and I'll sign up for that breakfast any day of the week. :)
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you, Martha. I will be watching for the fawn, that is for certain, but I don't want to scare them off. And you are welcome to come share my cheerios with me anytime. Hopefully I will still have some fruit to go with it. We were on a fruit kick this week after eating way too much food last week on our trip. We are trying to eat healthy to make up for it! :) Blessings to you as well.

  5. We celebrated the first day of summer with doctors. Bletch. Not nearly as exciting as your 'quiet' day! The deer photos are great and you are right about that momma! Hope she brings out her babies one day! You are so blessed to live at the edge of the forest where so many of God's creatures also live.

  6. Pam: We had rain storms forecast for our area. I stayed in most of the day, until around 7:30 this evening. I spent time on the computer, and then reading a book I was asked to review. Also prepped for a VBS meeting that is tomorrow evening. Played some Classic Word games (think Scrabble.) I had fruit salad for my breakfast and with my lunch.

  7. I like that you have a deer friend! :)

    I wonder if they see the Lord around us?
