My Thrift Store Little Girl

Today while my hubby was picking up a prescription at the local "Grandma's Pharmacy" (I kid you not...that is the name of the drug store), I meandered down to the Thrift Store in the little shopping center to mosey around while waiting.  They had lots of this and that, old dishes, clothes, junk, knicknacks and paddiwacks...even had a dog wandering around in the store...(not for sale, at least I don't think he was...).  Most of the stuff was just junk, and somewhat overpriced junk at that.  Except for this lovely little item that caught my eye and I could not pass it up.  I mean, it was only $2.00!!!
Here she is...and I know you will agree that she was meant for me ...

Don't you just love this little girl, sitting in front of the mirror, trying on a pretty hat...and wearing her mommy's make up and jewelry?

And notice her teddy bear, sitting there patiently watching and waiting for her to finish playing dress-up and pick him back up to play...

He kind of reminds me of my hubby waiting for me to try on new clothes at the store...
(which rarely ever happens any more!)

Well, I just couldn't pass her by.  She takes me back to my own childhood...playing dress up...and I still love to put on old hats and pretend I'm from somewhere back in time...and since I don't have any little girls or granddaughters to enjoy playing dress-up with...I guess the little girl in me was reaching out to play with her....

It says on the bottom of this adorable little figurine that she is one the
"Dollstone Collection" pieces from "Yesterday's Child". And there is a quote from
William Butler Yeats:

"To be born a woman is to know,
although they do not talk of it as school,
that we must labor to be beautiful."

However, I remember what Proverbs 31:29-30 says about "The Virtuous Woman"

"Many daughters have done well,
But you excel them all."
"Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
But a woman who fears the Lord,
she shall be praised."

Lord, I want to be that woman who fears the Lord...not for any praise, but because I know that is what has lasting value and purpose in life.  However, Lord, I thank You that You love me just as I am...especially when I come to You in "child-like faith".  For You told Your disciples in Matthew 18:3-5 the following:

"Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted
and become as little children, you will by no means
enter the kingdom of heaven.

Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child
is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Whoever receives one little child like this
in My name receives Me."

So maybe acting like a little girl again isn't such a bad thing after all!

Well, maybe my theology is a little skewed to cover my little indulgence today...but I think Jesus understands my heart.  Besides, the Bible also tells us that

"A merry heart  does good, like medicine!"
(Proverbs 17:22)

So, this sweet little girl has made my heart merry today...
and that's GOOD medicine!

I hope she has made YOU smile as well!

Good night dear friends!
Sweet Dreams!

  1. The little girl is just perfect for you, Pam. I had to laugh when I read your comment about maybe your theology was a bit skewed to cover your indulgence today. You are funny...I think the Lord had that little girl there just for YOU. He was saying, "I love you, Pam." :-)

    1. Thank you Dianna. Yes, I agree with you..I believe the Lord DID want me to have her, as she has made me smile every time I walk by...and I thank you for helping me to realize that God does send us little "love messages" sometimes from the most unusual places.

  2. Sometimes you just have to trust that you were led there on purpose. I can't believe that lovely figurine was only $2.00. Perfection and definitely meant to go home with you! What did your DH think about your find?

    1. Well, at first I told my hubby that I bought it to give to someone else as a gift...which was true. But the more I looked at it and admired how sweet she was, my hubby told me, "I think YOU are supposed to keep that little girl!" He said that he didn't think anyone else that I could possibly give it to would appreciate her nearly as much as he could see that I did...and so, he convinced me that it was not being selfish to keep her for myself. I guess I felt guilty for wanting to keep it when my first thought was to give her away...but hubby and you are right...she was definitely meant to come home with me. I can't tell you how much I've smiled at her already!

  3. Your little girl is adorable! I have a similar figurine of a little girl sitting in a hat box, trying on a hat. Her dog is pulling on the tie of the hat. Isn't it fun to find such treasures!

    1. It really was fun for me! I haven't been out thrift store shopping in a long time...and it was such a treat for me to find something so special...and so cheap!! Thank you for understanding just how special this is!! :)

    2. Pam: God leads us to what he wants us to find, whether it be a figurine or a new winter dress coat, (He did that for me once.) He does so as a way of expressing His love for us. I know you will find a special place for your little girl. Have you thought of naming her?

    3. You know what? I haven't thought of naming her yet! And that is unusual for me! I always name my special "dollies". I will have to think about that and let you know! And yes, I do believe God wanted me to feel His love through this little treasure. It's a small thing, but a BIG thing when we know God has blessed it. Now to think of a name.... :)

    4. Cecilia, Her name is "Miranda with Mary K" Pretty as a Picture is the title. That is what is written on the bottom. So, I will call her Miranda. I like that name! Thank you for reminding me!!!

    5. Miranda is a good name. Old fashioned, like the hat she wears.

    6. I agree! I love old fashioned names. Wasn't the lady who took care of Anne in in Anne of Green Gables named Miranda? I think so. Anyway, it's a good name, and I appreciate you taking an interest in this with me! :) We must be "kindred spirits".

  4. Pam, You found a true treasure in that adorable figurine and for $2.00!! We're to have a child-like faith, so I think that nurturing our inner child is a good thing.

    Blessings!

    1. THank you for agreeing with me on this, Kim! I am happy to see so many kindred spirits here. I don't know why I should feel guilty about enjoying something so sweet and simple. You all have made me appreciate the "gift" that she truly is. Thank you.

  5. She made me smile, indeed, Pam, and I can't believe the bargain! I'm not a collector, but when I'm in a thrift store, you can bet I'm browsing through the clothing and the books!
I do thing God means for us to stay in touch with that little child within, and He often shows us such gracious and simple ways to do so. After all, we are all His children, no matter how old we get!
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you Martha Jane. I appreciate that you agree and understand this Little child within us...I guess I am struggling with it because I somehow feel guilty for giving myself this little gift...but everyone here has confirmed that she is a gift to me especially from the Lord...to bring a smile to my face and to everyone here! I am so grateful for the Lord's sweet love for us. Thank you.
