A Day Well Spent

I am writing this on the evening of our 54th anniversary (August 16, 2023) to tell you about a day well spent. It probably won't get posted until tomorrow morning (Thursday), but I wanted to get it all written down tonight while it is fresh on my mind.
First of all, Thank you to so many who took the time to wish us a Happy Anniversary! We have been overwhelmed with so many best wishes both here in blogland and on Facebook. Such a joy to have so many dear friends out there in "cyberspace".  To me, it's as if you are all right here close by...and in my heart. Thank you.

This is how the day looked when we got up and put out the flag:

There was a golden sky out over Still Waters Pond. The day stayed kind of overcast and not quite as hot as it has been, for which we were very thankful, so we could get outside a little bit and enjoy the morning!

But before we left for the day, something sweet happened.  My hubby has not been able to wear his wedding band for several years because it had gotten too small for his finger. We talked about getting it resized for our 50th anniversary, but we were in the process of moving and everything was in storage at that time, so it just wasn't feasible since we really didn't know exactly where it was packed.  So I asked him about it this morning if he could get it and let's take it to the jewelers to have it sized.  He brought it out and I slipped it on his finger, and guess what? It fit again!  I think as we have aged our fingers have gotten skinnier because my ring is getting a little loose...and so anyway...here are our hands with our original wedding bands again after 54 years of marriage. I don't believe we ever had a picture taken of them when we were first married, so I can't compare...but this was such a blessing to me to see that ring back on his finger again after not seeing it for too long. I thank the Lord for this "gift".  I do have another ring that I wear along with this plain gold band, but this was what we were married with, and so these rings are very very special. For another sweet story about my engagement ring and wedding rings, click HERE.

After we had a light breakfast we took a little ride up the road about a half hour away to a place that we enjoy visiting, "Lake Swan Camp."  You can click on that link for more about why this place is so significant to us.

We enjoyed walking around and especially down by the cross beside the lake...such a beautiful, peaceful way to start our anniversary day.

It truly was lovely...but it was getting warm and we still had places to go and things to do, so we got back in the car and headed back toward home.

We needed to stop by the grocery store and pick up a few "essential things".  LOL. You can tell we are celebrating our 54th anniversary when we need to replenish our supply of Bran Flakes! LOL.

After dropping off the "essential groceries" at the house, we headed into Palatka to go to lunch at our favorite place for special occasions..."Corky Bells" beside the St. John's River:

We got there before they even open at 11:00, but they let us come inside and wait, so I took advantage of that time to take a few pictures in the lobby and also down by the river:

Hey, I think I know this man!

And she looks rather familiar too!

I had to hurry back inside before they caught me down on the dock without adult supervision! LOL.

It truly was a lovely morning!

Sorry about the reflection on the menu:

This was my plate:
Our food sure was GOOD!!!!!

Now, to top things off, our dear sweet kids invited us over for supper!  After having such a big delicious lunch, we knew we wouldn't be able to eat much, but Rose cooked a wonderful meal of baked chicken breast, scalloped potatoes, and a nice green salad.  It was so good, but we were careful not to overdo it.

Everything was so lovely and delicious...and of course it was wonderful just being together with our sweet family. We are so thankful for them.

So now we are home and it was supposed to start raining, but I think it has passed us by.  However, I am not complaining...the day couldn't have been better.  We are counting our blessings and giving thanks to the Lord for His great kindness and mercy and love shown toward us through all these 54 years.

Psalm 107:1, 8-9
"1 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.

8 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
9 For He satisfies the longing soul,
And fills the hungry soul with goodness."

In my previous post I talked about building our marriage on the Solid Rock of Jesus Christ. That reminded me of this song, and it has been playing in my head all day, so I thought perhaps I would share it with you..
"In Times Like These"

In times like these you need a Savior
In times like these you need an anchor
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He's the One
This Rock is Jesus, the only One
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

In times like these you need the Bible
In times like these, O be not idle
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He's the One
This Rock is Jesus, the only One
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

In times like these I have a Savior
In times like these I have an anchor
I'm very sure, I'm very sure
My anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He's the One
This Rock is Jesus, the only One
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

AMEN!!
And so with that, I will say good night and God bless you all!

Thankful Thursday ~ The Geese Have Landed...and other things...

We were so excited to see the Canadian Geese have returned to Still Waters Pond! They flew in Wednesday morning and hung around most of the day, just swimming around the pond and eating water lily plants and whatever else it is they like, and seemed to be really content to enjoy our pond.

I was pleasantly surprised to see them come right over to our side of the pond really close to shore. I even stepped outside on the back porch a few times to take their picture, and they didn't seem to care. I'm thinking these geese are pretty used to being around humans.  I don't know if these are the same geese who were here last year or not, but they just made themselves right at home.

Then they swam over to the other side and explored that area for a while. It will be interesting to see if they come back again, or if they were just passing through on their way to wherever it is they go for the winter.

I do hope they will be back again. We enjoy watching them so much!

We were thankful for this pleasant interlude in our day.

It was much better than what happened next.
I was busy doing a load of laundry and also the dishwasher was running, and as they both were draining about the same time, we noticed a bit of gurgling and bubbling noises coming from the bathroom and from the kitchen sink.  Then we couldn't flush the toilets...and we realized that something was very wrong. Long story short, it appears that our septic tank is full and needs to be pumped out.

So immediately I started making some phone calls. The first place that was recommended to me was so booked that it would be over a week before they could come out! That would mean we would have to wait all that time to use our "facilities", including laundry, dishes, bathing, anything that required water to be drained?  Hmmm, that would never work, with Thanksgiving coming next week!
So the next place I called said the soonest they could come would be next Monday.
That is still unacceptable. I mean, what are people supposed to do?
Finally, I reached a company that said they could come on Friday. Okay, that's a little better. This was Wednesday...we could survive until then I am sure...
Thankfully our son and wife live only about a mile from here and they very graciously offered us to come over and use their "facilities" anytime we needed.
Well, that is wonderful, but probably not a good idea to go over there at 2 a.m. or other such crazy times, if you know what I mean...
So, we thought up the next best thing:
Do you know what that is?

They call it a "honey bucket". Not sure why the "honey" part, but it is certainly better than nothing:

Okay, sorry if this is all TMI.  But there are times when we need to share important information with each other, as we never know when we might need such important information. I learned about this idea from watching some of those Alaska real estate shows, where people are just so crazy about going to live up in the wilds of Alaska where there is no running water or electricity or any other nicety known to woman.  Men don't seem to mind so much...but women going out in the sub zero temperatures in the wilds of Alaska in the middle of the night to an outhouse? Well...that is how the "honey bucket" came into existence.

Sure beats having to use one of these:

Or one of these:

with one of these:

When I was a little girl on the farm in Pennsylvania we had to use all of the above.  We had an outhouse on our farm, and it was a two-seater like this one above.  My memories are scarce, but I have one specific memory that has left an indelible imprint on my psyche.  When I was about 4 years old my big sister and I went out to the outhouse together one afternoon. She, being 4 years older than I, was more experienced in the fine-art of outhouse protocol.  Our particular outhouse had a door with a hook and eye on the inside for when you were inside and didn't want intruders or the door to fall open. And it also had a block on the outside to turn and hold the door shut when you left to go back inside the house.  We also were blessed in that we had a very tiny natural gas heater inside our outhouse, for those freezing cold winter days and nights. In Pennsylvania there were a lot of natural gas wells in the ground, and our farm happened to have one, so we were fortunate to have free gas for heating and cooking, etc.

Anyway, it must have been a cold day because that little heater was on.  My sister demonstrated to me how to push the door of the outhouse open from the inside if perchance someone went outside and turned the block on the door to keep it from falling open. She, being the older and stronger sister, had no problem pushing that big old wooden door open.  And then she left me inside by myself, turned the block on the door and promptly went back to the house. When I finished my "business" I thought that I was big and strong enough to push that door open just like she had shown me. So I pushed, and I pushed, and ran as hard against that door as my stout little four year old legs could push, and I could not push that door open. I struggled with it and pounded on it, and in my frantic actions I somehow bent down low enough to get my hair too close to the little heater that was burning.  Then I could smell the horrible stench of burnt hair, and I started screaming. About that time my mother came to my rescue and opened the door and pulled me out and up into her arms as I was crying and telling her that my sister left me in there on purpose! Well, my sister said no such thing...she just forgot that she had turned the block on the door and she didn't mean to leave me in there by myself. To this day it is still questionable in my mind as to whether or not she meant to lock me in there or not. But I love her anyway and she is still the best "little big sister" any girl could have.  I call her my "little big sister" because she is much smaller than I am, but she is still the "big sister".  Nowadays I could probably push that outhouse door open easier than she could! LOL.  We may have to have a contest of strength next week when she comes for Thanksgiving.  (Lord willing...praying that we can be together).

Okay, so this was supposed to be a Thankful Thursday post, and I am very thankful indeed...Martha at Seaside Simplicity mentioned that she was thankful for toilets on her Wednesday Hodgepodge post that I read...and I knew then that it would be okay to tell you this story!

I am thankful for many other things besides toilets and geese on the pond. I am thankful for my family and friends and that we still live in the best country in the whole world, regardless of what is happening out there in the political realm. And I pray that God will keep us all strong and healthy...and continue to bring healing to those who are currently battling illnesses among our ranks. There are several still, and we need to remember to keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

I pray that we can each celebrate Thanksgiving in some special way next week. Even if you can't gather with family and friends, I hope that you will take the time to do something a little bit extra special to make the day truly a day of Thanksgiving.

"Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
and for His wonderful works to the children of men!
For He satisfies the longing soul,
and fills the hungry soul with goodness."
Psalm 107:8-9

"O give thanks to the Lord,
for He is good! For His mercy endures forever."
Psalm 118:1

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving...

'Twas the eve before Thanksgiving and all through the house...a lot of creatures were stirring...pies, jellos, casseroles...yes, stirring up lots of good food for the family celebration.

Last week I posted about how thankful I was for my tongue .  And as we prepare to eat all the wonderful food for Thanksgiving, I am doubly thankful for my tongue and my sense of taste.  Today I am also thankful for my sense of smell!  It seems to me that one of the best parts of Thanksgiving is all the wonderful smells of pies baking, turkey roasting, the aroma of the sage, celery and onions of stuffing/dressing baking, permeating the house with delectable fragrances that make our mouths water and our tummies start growling...

We are not going to have our traditional turkey dinner on Thanksgiving Day this year due to family scheduling...our big gathering will actually be on Saturday.  But, in keeping with the season, we will have pumpkin pies and apple pie to go along with our small family dinner tomorrow.  I just couldn't resist baking these pies so that I could smell and taste the flavors of the season.

(apple pie and pinwheels from left over crust baking in the oven)

Little by little the Thanksgiving decorations are coming out of hiding and standing in their places in preparation for the celebration...

The Pilgrims have come prepared for the feast...

And these prayerful children and parents are giving thanks for all that God has provided...

The Little Pilgrim Shakers and friends are all lined up and are ready to be filled with salt and pepper and  placed on the tables...

I love this little needlepoint picture my sister Doris made for me way back in 1978!  That reminds me of our table grace we used to say as children...

Yes, as we prepare for the big feast we pause to reflect on our many blessings...so many I can't count them.  This year we will welcome a new member to our family table...our new daughter in law Rose! And we will miss our sweet "Nanny Steiner" at the table, who is living in a nursing home, but is thankfully in good spirits and good health...just not able to travel anymore.

We've had a wonderful year with good health and answered prayers. The Psalmist sums up pretty well what we should be saying and feeling on this Thanksgiving Day.

Psalm 107:1-2, 8-9
1.  "Oh, give thanks to the Lord,
for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.
2.  Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy."
8.  "Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord
for His goodness,
and for His wonderful works to the children of men!
9.  For He satisfies the longing soul,
and fills the hungry soul with goodness."

Indeed, God has redeemed and protected us from the hand of the enemy...and He truly satisfies the longing soul...and fills the hungry soul with goodness...

It is my prayer that you and your family and friends will have a day of great blessing and joy as you gather together and remember God's "wonderful works to the children of men." Even when we are having difficult times, there is ALWAYS something to be thankful for.

The last verse (43) of Psalm 107 says:

"Whoever is wise will observe these things,
and they will understand the lovingkindness
of the Lord."

Amen!
Happy Thanksgiving to all,
and to all a "good night".

Early Morning Splendor

Today is a special day...it is our 48th wedding anniversary!! And to start the day off right, we spontaneously decided to watch the sunrise together. So we grabbed our mugs of hot coffee (hubby) and hot tea (me), jumped in the car and drove to the public boat ramp on Lake Kerr, which is about five miles from our home, and arrived just in time to witness this:

Our selfies...early morning bed head sans makeup...this is as good as it gets...

last picture from the car as we drove away...

When we arrived back home we sat down to read our morning devotions.  I picked up Sarah Young's Jesus Calling and read what she wrote for today's date...and I thought it quite profound in "light" of what we had just experienced...

"Meet Me in early morning splendor.  I eagerly await you here.
In the stillness of this holy time with Me,
I renew your strength and saturate you with Peace.
While others turn over for extra sleep or anxiously tune in to the latest news,
you commune with the Creator of the universe.
I have awakened in your heart strong desire to know Me.
This longing originated in Me, though it now
burns brightly in you.

When you seek My Face in response to My Love-call,
both of us are blessed.
This is deep mystery,
designed more for your enjoyment than for your understanding.
I am not a dour God who discourages pleasure.
I delight in your enjoyment of everything that is
true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable.
Think on these things,
and My LIGHT in your will shine brighter day by day."
Sarah Young, Jesus Calling, August 16.

Could anything have been written more perfectly for this morning?

As well as Sarah Young's inspired devotional writing for this day, she also included a reference to Isaiah 40:31, which is one of my favorite verses ever, but especially perfect for today:

"But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint."

This verse was a special confirmation to us today because just yesterday we were grappling with a major decision, and finally made our choice to back away from our desired plans and "dreams" and wait on the Lord to show us HIS plans for us. Once we surrendered our will to God's will completely, we had renewed peace and strength...and were finally able to sleep at night again.  So today's experience and these words from God's Word and from His servant were exactly what we needed to hear today, to reaffirm to us that we had made the right decision.

I ask you, dear friends, Isn't God good?  Isn't our Lord just awesome in His works to the children of men?

"Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
and for His wonderful works to the children of men!
For He satisfies the longing soul,
and fills the hungry soul with goodness."
Psalm 107:8-9
Amen!
