Happy August!

Happy First Day of August! To me, August is a month of transition...summer begins to wane, and we begin to shift our thinking from vacations and summer gardens, to getting the kids ready for school (if you still have any at home) and getting back into a regular routine again.  Of course, for those of us who are retired and all our children are grown, it may not be as big of a change, but still there are subtle differences in the air, an expectation of things to come.   Some may feel a bit of anxiety about whatever the future may hold, but the verse shared below in this Thomas Kinkade calendar picture for August is a good one to remember:  "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee." Isaiah 26:3

I love that painting, entitled "Weekend Retreat", and would LOVE to have such a place to retreat to, especially if it was somewhere cooler than where we are right now!

Perhaps this calendar picture below may be more what you are experiencing...picking the last of the summer flowers from your garden and trying to keep things watered and growing for as long as possible.

And this would be someplace that I would love to be as well...Isn't that a beautiful farmhouse, and look at those lovely flowers and trees and the wheat field in the background...but most of all, I love the picture of the sweet old grandpa taking a walk with his, what I would assume, would be a great grandson.

John Sloane captures so much beauty and joy and love in these paintings in his Country Seasons calendar.  I enlarged this part of the picture to see what the little boy was looking at, and it is a chipmunk!  We don't have those here in Florida, but I have had some experiences with them  up north..especially in Ohio, where we had a chestnut tree, and in the fall I had a daily race with the chipmunks to see who could gather the most chestnuts off the ground! I think the chipmunks won! They took them and stored them somewhere for their winter meals.  I roasted the few I could gather and I think I also managed to chop up some into our stuffing for our Thanksgiving dinner! Sweet memories!

After enjoying a nice walk with a grandchild or anyone else, for that matter, it would be nice to come inside and make a pot of tea with this lovely Royal Doulton teapot from the Netherlands...and sit down together and have a nice long visit over tea and cookies...

There is something special about having tea with a friend or loved one...

Or maybe that young grandchild would prefer a glass of cold lemonade! That sounds pretty good too!
This Susan Branch calendar always captures my imagination...Yes, "Home, Such a lovely Place"...

And now that brings me to something special from my home!    This photograph is not current...I'm not sure of the date, but by the looks of it most likely it was taken in the late fall here on our own Still Waters Pond, when the Canada Geese were gathered to enjoy a peaceful place to swim and fish and honk at their neighbors as they swam around each other...always a lot of fun to watch in the fall and winter.

So why am I showing it now? Well, I did something I've never done before!
First, I got a new bedspread, and I wanted to have something different to hang above the bed that would tie in the colors in our bedroom...

And I really didn't want to spend money on a picture from someone else's pond or woods or whatever, when I have such a beautiful place right here on our own Still Waters Pond.  So I searched through my photographs of the pond to find one that would show a peaceful scene, and I asked hubby what he would enjoy looking at more...the geese, the Sand Hill Cranes, or something else, and he said the geese...
So I sent in this photograph online to Walmart and had them make it into a canvas picture to hang on the wall!   I was concerned that the photo might look too blurry when enlarged that much, but it really doesn't! It looks just like the original, only bigger!

I am really excited and pleased with the way it turned out!

This is my anniversary present to us, as August 16th will be our 56th anniversary! And it is nice to be able to sleep "beside the Still Waters (pond)".

August is always a busy month for our family, with lots of other people in the family having birthdays and anniversaries.  We had hoped to get everyone together sometime this month to celebrate, but we're having difficulty finding a date that works for everyone. So we may have to break it up into smaller gatherings at different times.  Time will tell.  Either way, at least hubby and I already have started the celebration!  Today we had some errands to run in the "city", so we went to lunch at Captain D's. I like their grilled seafood dinners, and it's not too expensive, so we had that. I am thankful that he was feeling well enough to go. "One day at a time, Sweet Jesus! That's all I'm asking from you..."

This was the sunrise this morning!

And here's one last passage from the Thomas Kinkade calendar for August...some good words of wisdom for us all to remember...

So be at peace, my friends...and have a blessed and beautiful  and safe August. Bye for now!

  2. I’ve been wanting to do the same with some of my nature scenes but wondered how it would come out. I don’t know if our Walmart does that but I know Costco does.
What a charming scene of the grandfather and grandson. Very sweet and I love love love that farmhouse.
Michael’s birthday is the 7th. Other than that, it’s just August.

  9. Your calendars are always so pretty, but nothing compares to your own photos of your beautiful pond!! Those "canvas" photo enlargements are so great!! I've done two and they hang here in my living room. It's a great way to share favorites with guests (or to enjoy every morning and night in your bedroom!)! 10. That's the perfect anniversary gift for the both of you, Pamela! I'm happy to see that Walmart actually did a great job on with enlarging your photo, and it does look perfect in your bedroom with the new spread. As always, I love your calendar roll out, too. My favorite was the Grandpa with his great grandson. So charming! Have a blessed month of August!

  13. I always look forward to your monthly parade of calendars, and this time? I do believe Susan Branch is my fav ... makes me want to buy a glass pitcher and make some homemade lemonade! That canvas looks so great there in your bedroom. Clever girl, I'd no idea WalMart did things like that! I hope you thoroughly enjoy every Red Letter August event on the calendar!

  16. it's a hot but happy August so far. Your art piece of the pond is so neat. It looks great transferred to the canvas. AND...your bedspread matches perfectly. The calendar pictures always bring a smile to my face. I think if I could do it all over again, I would love to be an illustrator or be able to draw pictures for cards, books, calendars or books. I think this is such a fun talent. Hoping your Sunday is filled with all kinds of joyful moments...

  17. Summer waning sounds good to me. I am not a fan of hot weather. The only thing good about August for me is our wedding anniversary. This year will be our 46th. We've already bought our combination anniversary gift with that new UTV Honda Pioneer. It's taken the place of our motorcycles since we can't ride anymore.
That's a nice photo or painting in the bedroom. Very pretty.
    Blessings. ❣️

  19. Loved all the pretty pictures, Pam! Especially enjoy your monthly calendar pictures and isn't this month's a GOOD ONE? We have it up in our kitchen and I just love it, every single month his art is GORGEOUS, enjoy his work so much. Just love the anniversary picture you had made, it matches perfectly your all's bedroom, looks great! Love the colors in your bedroom, nice and soothing. Your bedroom is so neat and organized......ours is one big chaotic mess, LOL. Oh gosh yes, we used to go to Captain D's, loved their food!! Would get everything fried and greasy, ha ha LOL. Their side dishes were good too, we ate there once in awhile when we lived in Charleston. The drive thru was verrrrrrry slow, but the wait was worth it. Hope your weekend has been super peaceful and nice and your temps lowered????------ours did, boy we enjoyed that. hugs

  23. Your bedspread looks a lot like mine, the color anyway. And what a great idea for the photo over your bed! Perfect.
I used to get a pretty calendar every year and usually deliberated for weeks over which one to get. Somehow I got out of the habit though. Yours are so pretty. I always love anything Susan Branch!

  24. Dear Pamela,

What a beautiful, heartwarming post 💛. I can so relate to that feeling of August as a month of transition. Your paintings and stories breathe such peace and joy — and what a wonderful idea to have your own pond printed on canvas! That makes it so personal. Its is "prachtig".

Congratulations in advance on your 56th anniversary, what a special milestone! Wishing you a blessed and peaceful August… one day at a time.

  25. What a wonderful post!
I love the new bedspread and picture. Even when the picture had turned out blurry it would have been art!! It's lovey!!

So interesting august is a month of transition in your area.
Here august is THE summermonth, so we can only hope the weather will improve.. We just had a few cooler and grey days with drizzle an rain, and are heading towards too hot temperatures again.

The teapot is not from The Netherlands, but from the UK. It is part of the Harlem Series, also called Dutch A Harlem. So inspired on the city of Haarlem. The designer was Charles Noke, and it came into production in 1904. During the years that followed the design was adapted, bit by bit, and there were even special editions for exclusive sales by famous stores, like Liberty's. So collectors have quite a job to find all the items with the tweaks and changes. Production stopped in 1943.

Haarlem is a city near Amtserdam, also with canals.
The train to Zandvoort, the most famous beach place, stops there.
I prefer Haarlem above Amtserdam. Less tourists, the traffic is not botheringg the people who walk there, and the people are nicer.

    Happy August!

    1. Thank you, Syl. It's so good to hear from you! Actually, when I said that August is a transition month, I think I mostly meant that things start happening as summer vacation time winds down and kids start going back to school here in August. As far as temperature goes, here where we live in Florida, it stays hot June-September pretty much. August is usually VERY hot, and we often get hurricanes in August and early September, so anything is possible!
I appreciated your info on the teapot. Actually, my calendar has all that same information, but I guess I was just zooming in on the fact that the picture/design is from The Netherlands. It is definitely a "Dutch" scene, at least as far as what I know of the old fashioned traditional Dutch scenery! I've never been there, but I think it would be a wonderful place to visit someday. Do you live near Amsterdam or Haarlem? I have no clue or understanding of the locations or geography. I suppose I need to do some research! Thank you for sharing that information. I do appreciate hearing from you so much.
