This lovely outdoor nativity scene will be explained later. I just wanted to start out with this lovely picture to help me get back into the right frame of mind and heart for writing tonight.
Yes, it is only 4 days before Christmas, and all through the house a lot of creatures are stirring...maybe even a mouse! Well, not really, thank goodness!!! Although we do have some kind of critter that keeps digging holes in our yard and trying to burrow under the house. We think it's an armadillo, but we haven't seen him with our eyes yet...just his holes in the ground. Anyway, that has nothing to do with Christmas, so let's move right along! LOL.
Speaking of our yard, our azaleas have been blooming for the past couple of weeks...they are so beautiful...
These are some of the plants I planted since we moved here 3 years ago. The weather has been so warm lately that they have been blooming a bit early. But the weather is about to change...freezing temperatures in the low 20's are on the way for the weekend! That may not seem so bad for many of you, but here in Florida that is very cold, and can be quite harmful to the economy of the citrus growers and ferneries and other agriculture in the state. I know many places up north are going to be having blizzard conditions and sub zero temperatures, so we will definitely be praying for you as well. Please stay warm and safe. I hope your Christmas plans won't be upset too much by the weather.
Yesterday morning I had to have fasting lab work done (routine), and so when that happens we usually go out for breakfast afterwards. We had begged off from working at Dixie Cottage yesterday so that we could also go do some shopping afterwards, and so we did.
Here's the place where we had breakfast:
I liked that little chrome tea pot full of hot water for my tea, so of course I took at picture:
I also liked that handsome man across the table from me drinking his coffee, so I had to take his picture too:
I liked the food we both were about to eat, so I had to take a picture of that as well! LOL.
And I also liked the fresh orange slices they gave us with our meal, so hubby took a picture of me about to eat mine:
It was a great breakfast, and then we did go do some shopping until time for lunch, so we headed home to eat and then rest up for a special evening last night. And that is where that picture of the outdoor Nativity Scene comes in.
This is the indoor nativity scene inside the church we visited last night.
Last evening our church choir traveled to a neighboring community church and we had a Candlelight Christmas program with them and also another church choir joined us. Each choir sang a couple of songs from our Christmas cantatas, and then our pastor was the guest speaker.
Here we are when it was our turn to sing. I am standing in behind the others to sing a solo in one of the songs, and needed the microphone.
Here's the rest of the choir...
We had such a great time. After the service we all processed out to that lovely outdoor nativity scene, holding our little candles and singing Silent Night, Holy Night. It was very moving.
Also during the program they had a guest organist play a medley of Christmas music on the church's new pipe organ. He was extremely gifted and truly blessed us with the music he played.
I spoke with him afterwards at the little reception/fellowship time in their fellowship hall, and learned that he also is an organ repairman! I told him about the organ that we have at our house that used to belong to my parents and now it belongs to our son Scott, who loves to play it but he doesn't really read music. He loves to make up his own music and has always called it his "therapy". Anyway, I told this man about the organ and that it needs some work done, but it is so old and out of date, one of those 1970's era synthesizer type organs, and he said he knew all about them as he used to sell them. Anyway, he said that perhaps sometime when he is coming back through our area to maintain some area church organs he will let us know and stop by to evaluate the organ to see if it is repairable or even financially feasible to do so. I sent him some pictures of it this morning so he will know what he's looking at:
It does still work, but needs some "tweaking". We shall see what develops. It may be cost prohibitive and if so, Scott will just have to continue to enjoy it "as is".
This is a picture of Scott, when he was about age 10 or 11, playing the organ at my parents' home.
And a picture of Scott playing the organ while we were "in transit" (moving).
Today found me again out "shopping until I dropped"...I know, I know...most of you have had your shopping done for months or weeks or at least days. And most of you have everything wrapped and neatly stacked under the tree already...and the cookies are baked and the house is immaculate and everything is under control. I commend you all for it and I appreciate the organization and creativity you each possess when it comes to getting ready for Christmas. I truly wish I were more like you, but I'm not. When it comes to shopping, I procrastinate until the last minute. I have a thing about shopping...I do not enjoy it. I have meltdowns in aisle 5 or wherever I happen to be when I have finally had enough and just can't take one more step or look at one more cute thing that someone surely must want for Christmas. I don't even like to shop online. Too many decisions to make...too many comparisons...and I can't see it in person or feel the quality of it or make sure it really is true to size...yes, shopping is a literal nightmare for me. So there! Now you know it. I would be SO happy if we could just be together and enjoy a nice visit over a cup of tea or coffee and some nice cookies or pie or some other goody that will eventually get baked, and spend time laughing and talking and sharing our life's stories with one another...no pressure...and whatever gifts are exchanged are gifts from the heart.
Okay, rant over. Now let's move on to more pleasant subjects...LOL. Forgive me. I hope I didn't offend anyone here. It's just something I go through every year and at this age it's not likely to change. And yes, we will have a wonderful Christmas, full of the joy of the real gift of Jesus our Savior...and there will be many gifts exchanged and loved and cherished...no matter the cost or how big or small...it's the love between family and friends that matters most and that will be celebrated.
Speaking of gifts...You may not fully understand or appreciate this "gift", but it is an "early Christmas gifts". While hubby and I were out shopping, I found this rolling drawer cabinet at Big Lots. I told hubby I wanted, no needed, this particular item to help restore my sanity. Let me explain.
Do any of you struggle with the myriads of plastic bowls and lids that accumulate in your cabinets? Now, we all know that we need plastic bowls and their matching lids (if they can be found) to store leftovers, etc. Well, storing these items has become a matter of some frustration for me, because the only place I could put them was in a lower cabinet, where I had to literally sit down on the floor and search through the lids and bowls to find what I needed, and then try to get back up off the floor with said bowl and lid and hope it fits, etc. Anyway, I've been saying for some time that I want some drawers to put these in so they can be more easily obtained. Since we no longer have a dishwasher, the space where it was is vacant. It would be a perfect spot to install a cabinet with some drawers big enough and deep enough to house these plastic bowls and lids. I had mentioned this to my carpenter son some time ago, but since the start of Dixie Cottage all extra "projects" have been put on hold.
Therefore, when I saw this plastic rolling cart of drawers for sale, I measured it, and knew it would fit and that it would work perfectly! We loaded it up and brought it home and voila! I am a happy Mama!
I know, it's plastic, but hey, it works. And if my son ever gets enough time to build a real cabinet, then this can be used for something else. But until then, I am very thankful to have found this.
The bottom drawer even had some room for some bottled water that had been sitting on the floor in that space before.
Okay dear friends. That's it for now. I hope you forgive my grumbling about shopping, etc. Actually, I love being able to give gifts to others...I just wish I was better at it. Someday...
Let us not forget about what is the most perfect gift ever:
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
John 3:16
8 "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves;
it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast."
Ephesians 2:8-9
Jesus, the perfect gift from God, given to us so that by believing in Him, we will have the gift of salvation...all it takes is faith in believing and accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord! There can be no greater gift than that...and we don't have to go shopping for it, or spend lots of money to obtain it, or work hard to earn it. It's a free gift...ours for the taking!
Good night dear friends. And I pray you have a blessed and very Merry Christmas, filled with the joy of the best gift of all. Amen.
Hi Pamela, I did hear you were getting cold weather. We are supposed to be at 78 for Christmas. It has been in the 60's for a couple of weeks now. Your church service sounds so nice. I wrote about a candle service in my most recent blog post. I am sorry you don't like shopping. I usually go the day after Thanksgiving and find most of the kid gifts. I have order most of the adult gifts online. I am almost finished with wrapping, and I hope to finish tonight. I am sure your Christmas will be special!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your family. And yes, ours will be special too. Somehow it always manages to come together perfectly, even with my imperfections! LOL. I will be wrapping tomorrow and Saturday. Thankfully hubby already did a good bit of it. I may give him some more to do. Take care and God bless you all.
DeletePam, that rolling cart with drawers is a perfect solution!! My plastic take up two entire cupboards and are so hard to keep organized. Lucky you!! You omelette looks SO good!! No worries about shopping. I hate shopping as well, which is why most of mine is done through Amazon.com. I just today got presents bagged (I don't wrap) and put under the tree. Whew! My sister arrived tomorrow afternoon! Merry Christmas, Pam. Love and hugs to you all!! xo
ReplyDeleteI am very pleased with my little rolling cart of drawers. It is working out very nicely so far. I can see what I want and the lids are right there too. Yay! I hope your sister arrived today with no problems. I know you will be having a wonderful time together. Take care and enjoy every minute you can. Merry Christmas!
DeleteI hear you about the plastics! I decided I didn’t need as many as I had and got rid of many. I keep about 4 that nest inside each other. I try to use glass containers more now. It’s been working out well now for a couple of years.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your post. It’s always so informative
I like the idea of using glass containers for food storage...it's better for microwaving the leftovers too, but I don't have a lot of places to keep them either. I do like the pyrex bowls and lids, however. Little by little maybe I can do that. Have a Merry Christmas my friend!
DeletePamela, I hear you about shopping - Danny and I ventured out to Macy's to try to find toys for the grands, but the most fun we had was waving to "Santa Claus" who had no visitors in the mall. I really wish now that I'd paid to have my picture taken with him. :)
ReplyDeleteSimply have a Merry Christmas where Jesus is the focus of everything, my friend.
Love and blessings!
Oh, I would have loved to have seen you sitting on Santa's Lap. When I saw Santa at that restaurant last Sunday he offered for me to sit on his lap and I politely declined. LOL. Mrs. Claus was right there watching and so was my hubby, so I'm sure it would have been just fine, but I just didn't think it was appropriate for an old lady like me. LOL. Hoping you and yours have a wonderful Christmas. Try to stay warm and safe!
DeleteI enjoyed your post today and understand how you feel about shopping. Even though I've had mine done for awhile now I mostly do it on line these days. It is true that there is a lot to on line shopping especially if you like to do cost comparisons and when things don't work out well there is a lot of work to package it up and send it back. Anyway it has saved some wear and tear on the old body by doing much of it on line and I take the drawbacks that come with it, lol. Your day and night sound very lovely and the plastic rolling cart is just perfect. I know how frustrating it is when you don't have the right storage solution. You've found something that works and fits right into the spot left by the dishwasher. Well done! Have a wonderful Christmas with loved one if I don't get to 'chat' before then. xx
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joyful. Next year I will save some wear and tear on my body too and get everything done well in advance of Christmas...(I say that every year! LOL). I do pray you will also have a blessed and joyful Christmas this year!! Looking forward to staying in touch in the new year as well. God bless you dear friend!
DeleteI'm with you. I don't like shopping either. I don't mind grocery shopping if I have a list, but I really am not one of those people that like to put their hands on everything in the store a can spend lots of time just looking. My sister is like that. I want to get in and get what I need and get out. lol Both nativities are beautiful. My plastic items are in a bottom cabinet too. Not the best place for something used so often. Have a great day Pam and Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteSounds like your sister and mine would get along just fine on a shopping trip. LOL. And, I hope you can move your plastic ware up higher. It's not good for us ladies to be crawling around on the floor playing with the tupperware! That's what our babies did, but we are beyond that now! LOL. Have a Merry Christmas!!
DeleteThe best part of Christmas is the Lord’s birthday and family…no huge meals are needed…just fellowship…share thoughtfully chosen gifts…no rushing…no entertaining…that is in the past when huge crowds gathered…enjoy your Christmas with your family. Having been involved in church since birth, I often found, through the years, that sometimes churches, meaning well, put to much on is. One of our dearest friends was the pastor in the church we started…we made sure the people had time for family…there are so many programs to attend…a nice Christmas Eve service sometime during the day of Christmas Eve is fantastic…however, rushing around for weeks…I often wondered why the choir on my church in my hometown, when I was older I attended there again, had to practice for weeks and weeks and nights and nights for a one to two hour cantata program…I chuckled and told them I could get high school kids to do a five act play by Shakespeare in less time. I finally realized it was not the practicing but the being together and having fun which is fine…we need that…I will admit I start early…after owning the Hallmark store for ten years, I learned how to pace…and what is most important…that is my family…Merry Christmas to you and all of your family and readers…may God bless you and give you rest and peace…I love your blog and hope to meet you one day…a great person you are…
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking this must be Brenda. Thank you for your kind thoughts. I hope you and yours will have a wonderful Christmas, and yes, it would be wonderful to meet someday. I believe you live in Florida, right? So maybe it will happen! Take care and God bless you all. Stay warm!
DeleteYes Brenda Google acting silly again…

DeleteAs ever, your post makes me smile (and chuckle here and there). I strongly suspect the armadillos who were making a mess of our yard travelled south. Sorry! That 3-drawer storage bin is genius! We, too, have a 'gap' where the dishwasher used to reside. Since I refuse to buy a new one for just the two of us, I took a tension rod and hung a cafe curtain across. I hear you about shopping! In fact, if I had to do it at retail brick-and-mortar places everyone might be getting IOU's! I hope things aren't too crazy at Dixie Cottage today and y'all don't wear yourselves thin(ner)! Love your cardinal shirt!
ReplyDeleteAh, so THAT'S where the armadillo came from!! Alabama! LOL. I thought he had a strong southern accent! LOL. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Stay safe and warm!
DeleteIve been too ill to go shopping, so have only 2 gifts, done. Others will get checks. Can't do anymore. If this stormzilla hits, we will all be alone here for Christmas. I guess then we can postpone and do Orthodox Christmas the first week of January.
ReplyDeletePraying the storm will not be too severe on your area and that you can still be together for Christmas. Just be safe...that's the main thing, and stay warm!!! Praying for you all.
DeleteWhat a wonderful event last night, would have loved to be there to hear you sing. Wasn't that amazing that you found someone who knows all about the older organs? I hope it works out where he can repair it back to fullness. I can't go shopping these days, sometimes I think I miss it but most of the time I know I don't miss it at all. :) Christmas blessings to you sweet Pam.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mary. I was going to say if you really wanted to hear the song I sang, you can hear it in my post written for the 4th Sunday of Advent, https://pamelasopenwindow.blogspot.com/2022/12/2022-4th-sunday-of-advent.html, in the youtube video of the Christmas cantata. It is about 1/2 way through, and my solo is very short, only about 4 lines in the middle of the song "Come to the Cradle". I loved hearing all about your 60th Anniversary party. Sounds so wonderful!! What a blessing!!!!
DeletePam: You are not the only one who has problems keeping plastic bowls and lids together. I need to get with it and finish re-arranging my cabinets. Due to the weather, our son will not come home until December 31st. We are trying to prepare for the snow and the sub-zero temperatures.
ReplyDeleteOh, Cecelia, I am so sorry to hear that your son will not be able to come home for Christmas, but it is best that no one tries to travel this weekend if they absolutely don't have to. It sounds very dangerous. You will enjoy being together when the worry of travel is over. Praying you all stay warm and cozy and safe. Merry Christmas!!
DeleteHi Pam. I love this post! I love all of the flowers you still have in Florida and hope that the cold weather will not too damaging. I love how you organized all of your containers in that new drawer container. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas. See you again soon!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Deb. I have covered up all the plants that I think might be hurt in the freezing weather, and we will hope for the best. Praying you are safe and warm where you are. Have a blessed and Merry Christmas!
DeleteNope. Shopping not all done. Gifts not all wrapped. Cookies not baked. House not immaculate. I hope this helps you feel better.
ReplyDeleteWhen my plastic started running off together and having offspring, I got rid of almost all of it. I don't miss it. Different strokes. ☺️
Merry Christmas, Pam. It will all get done. I never know how, but it always does.
You and I must be related somehow! LOL. Kindred Spirits perhaps? I think your plastic ran off to Florida and ended up in my cupboard! LOL. I am narrowing it down and trying to use more pyrex, but that requires storage space also and doesn't "nest" inside each other as well. So that also presents a problem. I need to just quit cooking too much food so we don't have so many leftovers that often don't get all eaten up... Tomorrow I will be wrapping all day in between doing a little bit of cooking/baking (maybe). And yes, I do feel better. thank you. You're my kind of people. LOL. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
DeleteShopping. I had to smile about your melt-down in aisle 5.... I've felt that way sometimes. This year, for several reasons, we departed from what has been normal for me, and some of my family has reciprocated in the same way. We ordered foodie gifts from specialty places. I sent snack boxes created by Harry and David. One of my sons and his wife sent a box of wonderful chocolates. I ordered ours early in December and was able to specify a time frame in which they should be delivered. It has worked out well and I will probably do that again, changing the source of the gift each year for the sake of variety.
ReplyDeleteThe foodie gifts sound wonderful. We do send a box of fresh fruit from Florida to our family in Maine, and then also they get a "check" for something more fun. I don't send them gift cards because they have different things up there that we don't have so money is best. And they sent us a lovely centerpiece fresh from Maine, which works for us too! Where there's a will there's a way. But we have more local family to tend to here, which requires more thinking and planning. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!! God bless you both.
DeleteWhat a lovely post, Pamela. I have to say that I'm 100% in agreement with you about shopping. My daughter provides me with links so I can shop for things she wants online that way. We just exchange with kids/grandkids now. Merry, Merry Christmas to you and yours! Your blog is a blessing to me.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. My biggest challenge is the local immediate family and some extended family who we usually get together with after Christmas. We are working on coming up with more affordable and reasonable ways to do this, but it takes everyone's cooperation. Thank you for visiting. I appreciate your kind words. Have a blessed and wonderful Christmas.
DeleteMerry Christmas beautiful photos today! Love the Azaleas (will you have to cover them?) I know here we do if they come out too early. We are in sub zero weather its now 14 with wind chill of -15 BURR I have 2 of those roll around drawers (1 has my crafts the other misc paper work, files ect) they come in handy. I have 3 new post up hope you like them. Sending Christmas blessings
ReplyDeleteThank you Gina. I've covered most everything except the azaleas because they are pretty hardy and hopefully they will survive. The flowers will die, but the plants should survive (I hope). Wow you really have some cold weather to deal with. Praying you stay safe and warm in your home. Sending blessings to you as well. Merry Christmas!
DeleteEveryone has their own way of preparing for the holidays, Pam, so if what you do works for you, then it is just fine. Finding ways to organize containers and lids can be challenging, but seems you found a workable solution. I would certainly miss not having a dishwasher even though we do run ours daily. Best wishes to you and your family for a very Merry Christmas of joy, love, good times, and special surprises too.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you and yours!! The only time I really miss the DW is when we have company and lots of dishes. But most of the time it is just us and we wash up the dishes as we use them. We had a DW, but when it developed an unrepairable leak, we decided to just get rid of it and not replace it. We will leave the space available in case we change our minds someday, but meanwhile this rolling cart is a big help for storage. Hope you have a blessed and beautiful Christmas. Are you getting snow yet? I think it must be headed your way. We will be very very cold this weekend and next week. No snow in the forecast, but it will definitely be cold enough! Take care and stay warm!!
DeleteMerry Christmas to you! Your azaleas are beautiful!
