Well, I promised you lots of pictures today from our "Wild Lunch" yesterday with fellow blogging friend Barbara and her hubby Gary from
My Journal Memories.
We met at noon at The Yearling Restaurant in Cross Creek, FL. You can click on the link below for more information about the restaurant.

Here's our friend Barbara and hubby Gary now! This is not our first meeting. We have been blessed with their friendship for several years now, and since they only live about an hour away from us, we have enjoyed getting together for lunch on several occasions!

Here I am with my hubby as well. Barbara and I both lamented later that we forgot to ask our server to take a picture of all of us together...but you can trust us...we were truly there together, sitting across the table from one another. Barbara will be posting her own photos of this occasion soon on her own blog. We may have many of the same blogging friends, but we also have others who do not know one or the other of us, so who knows? We may make some new friends out of this connection! That would be fine with me! Any friend of Barbara's is surely a friend of mine!

Before I get into why I called this a "A Wild Lunch", let me just get our foodie pictures out of the way first!
Because this is a truly old Florida country establishment, to me it was only fitting to have something to eat a little more in keeping with the locality...I could've had some of their "
Cross Creek Traditions" menu items (click on the link for the menu), such as frog legs, free range venison, or Florida Gator Tail, but I chose something a little less exotic as in the fried catfish sandwich. That was "wild" enough for me, and it was very delicious, along with some cole slaw on the side.
And after we finished our entree's the server asked if we'd like dessert, and Barbara and I both decided we would like to share their house specialty of "Sour Orange Pie". She brought us a plate with a large piece divided in two so that we could both enjoy it together. The guys weren't interested in dessert, although I think Gary did sample a bit of Barbara's. I have attached a link to a recipe for Sour Orange Pie below. And yes, it is made with true Florida Sour Oranges, which I call "wild oranges"...and you can read more about that in the link below.
It was good, if you like a tart fruity kind of pie...similar to a Key Lime Pie with an orange flavor. I think I would've liked it better without the drizzle of chocolate and maybe with a whipped cream topping to help soften the tartness. But it was good and fun to try something different!
Now for the "wild part". I don't know if you are familiar with the story, "Cross Creek", written by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings...or perhaps you saw the movie "The Yearling", which she also wrote. Well, if you know anything about those stories, you will know that they take place in a very rustic and wild time of old Florida history, and "The Yearling Restaurant", located in Cross Creek and right down the road from The Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Park (see links down below), gives us a "taste" of that old Florida era and culture...back when this part of Florida was still largely uncivilized in the ways we know it now...and the people of that area were mostly known as the poor and wild country
"Florida Cracker"...(click on that link for more information).
This 13 foot alligator was caught in one of the lakes in the area...
I'm glad I wasn't in the same water when he was there...although, if you get into any lake in Florida, there's a pretty good possibility there could be another one just like him...so beware!
These are just some of the taxidermied animals that are on display throughout the restaurant...there's so much more than what I am sharing!
These animals are all typical of what could be found in and around Cross Creek and still can be found in parts of the Ocala National Forest today...
This is a painting...

You'd have to read the books Cross Creek and The Yearling to get a full appreciation for these displays.
Another feature of the restaurant are books lining almost every wall in every dining room area...and they are for sale. I wish I'd had more time to look them over!
This otter was having a nice time in the old fishing boat:
We had fun looking at this old telephone operator's switchboard...Somehow I can't imagine how they ever figured that out! "Number Please?" My, how times have changed!
For the Coca-Cola fans...
There was so much more to see, but I need to stop somewhere! It was truly a fun place to visit and to dine with our good friends. I am looking forward to going again sometime perhaps with our family. It's only about a half hour away from our house! I never realized it was so close!
I never realized that the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Park was just right down the road from there. We have been there before and have taken the tour of the house and grounds. It is also very interesting and fun to see.

After I came back home I found my copy of the book
"Cross Creek". Here are some pictures of the book jacket, which is in a rather fragile condition, so I don't keep it wrapped around the book...

Well, I hope you enjoyed this "Wild Lunch" today. I'm so glad Barbara thought of it and invited us to join them there! We had a great time!!!
What a wonderful time with 4 special people! It looks like a fun place to eat. I've read The Yearling but haven't heard of Cross Creek. The pie looks good, and I agree that it would be better without the chocolate. Lovely to see you all together!
ReplyDeleteTHank you, Mari. We had a great time! If you ever come back down again, it would be a great place to meet!! Cross Creek is also a movie, but I think the book is better. I need to read them both over again. It's been a long time!
DeletePam, we had such a good time with you and John. You've done an excellent job of recording our visit, the food, and the location. I have not had the time today to compose my blog post, but hope to before the weekend is over.
ReplyDeleteIt's me again. I handed my laptop computer to Gary so he could read this blog post. He commented that you did a really good job of recording our visit -- and he's right! He also asked me if it's hard to make the pie. I told him I had not read the recipe yet but I take that as a hint he might want me to make one (or something close to it, perhaps).
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Gary enjoyed this post. And we enjoyed our visit very much too. Let me know if you do decide to make the Sour Orange Pie. I think I read somewhere that if you don't have a true sour orange, you can mix a lemon with the orange to sour it up some! There were other recipes online. You might want to check out some others before you decide. Some also used a Saltine Cracker crust instead of the graham crackers, but it was recommended to use the graham crackers for better flavor. I don't think I'd like a Saltine cracker crust, but back in the "olden days" that may be all they had. Thank you again for suggesting we get together here. This was such fun. I can't wait to see your pictures and get your "take" on our visit! Have a blessed weekend!
DeleteWhat a great time y'all enjoyed! That restaurant looks so cool; I can only imagine how the gator and his 'friends' would appeal to children -- of all ages. (Me, I'd have to avert my eyes, hahaha.) I tasted catfish for the very first time when we moved here 8 years ago; it's good!
ReplyDeleteI think I read The Yearling back in grade school, but I may have to see if our library doesn't have a copy.
We did have a great time. I am thankful for their friendship beyond just what we can do here in blogland. I wish we could ALL get together sometime and get really better acquainted. I know we would love each other all the more!! The Yearling is a great book and movie, but it is a bit of a tear jerker. I need to get another copy of the book. I had a paperback version, but it disappeared somewhere along the way...it may have fallen apart. I would like to read it again. It's been a long time. Have a blessed weekend. (((HUGS)))
DeleteThe Yearling is still one of the books I have on my shelves, Pamela, and I will have to make the point of reading it again. I do remember how much I loved this story! How wonderful it is that you both could meet up with Barbara and Gary for such a meaningful lunch and renewal of friendship. I so wish that Danny and I could travel so that we could meet up with John and you, Barbara and Gary, in person. On this side of heaven, I don't think it's feasible. Blessings always!
ReplyDeleteI do understand about the traveling, Martha. We are not going to be traveling anywhere further than a couple of hours from home, unless our son drives us, and even then, we really don't like to go too far. Life has a way of creeping up on us and changing things sooner than we thought. But we are just thankful that we are in relatively good health, just slowed down. Re: The Yearling book, I used to have a paperback version of it, but it disappeared somewhere along the way. I would like to get another copy to keep in my collection of local literature, so I may be watching for a reasonable copy. I'd like to read it again. It's been a long time. I just remember it was a tear jerker. LOL. I hope you and Danny have a pleasant weekend, and I am continuing to pray for you both.
DeleteI have never heard of the Yearling before or the movie. I'll have to check it out. I too enjoy local literature, with my favorites being John Steinbeck or Jack London. Looks like a neat place. Glad you had a good time.
ReplyDeleteHere you go: https://fiveminutefriday.com/
DeleteThis post is absolutely delightful. Its been so many years since I read the Yearling. I must find it again and refresh my brain.
ReplyDeleteAll the do-dads in the restaurant are fascinating. I think I would be like the "MadSnapper" shooting everything.
Thanks for sharing.
Sue
What a very neat outing...I love that you all get together and that you live just an hour away from each other. this looks like an interesting place to meet. I would say this is one rather large gator. Can you imagine that thing coming up near the boat you were in. I would pass out. Sour orange pie has a unique name...I can see that it might taste similar to key lime pie. Glad you all had a great visit...
ReplyDeleteSadly today a man was killed near Orlando by a 12 foot gator while fishing from the shore. The gator came up on shore and pulled him into the lake and killed him. The man had just caugh a large fish, and perhaps the gator was after the fish. It was horrific.
DeleteWhat a wonderful meet up, my friend. Thank you for the kind comment you left...the family is facing a very difficult decision next week...the dr. is not optimistic...have a beautiful evening.
ReplyDeleteI am SO sorry, Linda. I will definitely be keeping you all in my prayers. May God give wisdom and peace of mind to all...still, we can pray for a miracle. God is in control, and He knows what is best. (((HUGS)))
DeleteLOVED all these great pictures, Pam! thats a really neat place, full of history. That fish sandwich looks good, I do love a good fish sandwich! So glad y'all got to go. I would probably be found in that book nook, could spend hours there. So glad y'all had great weather for the drive too, big blue skies and a sunny and mild day. Hope y'all have a safe and happy Sunday tomorrow. Is Benton in the choir performances yet? And have y'all started your Christmas music yet? Did Rose arrive safely to see her family? HUGS
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debbi. Yes, you would've loved it. There were walls and walls of books! Yes, Benton is in the choir now. We have our Christmas Cantata music, and will start learning it this week, little by little. It will be here before we know it! Yes, Rose is safely in MN., and very chilly!!!But she is happy to be there. Benton and the pups are all missing her, but it's only a week. I hope you have a wonderful Sunday too.
DeleteWhat a wonderful place! I think I would have spent more time looking at all those books than eating my lunch! I love restaurants with a bit of history and character. And that enormous alligator! I'm quite happy we don't have those swimming around in the Netherlands. š How lovely that you've made such good friends through blogging!
ReplyDeleteDear Aritha, I only wish you lived close enough to visit in person! That would be such a wonderful experience!! And I promise, if you came here, we'd stay away from the live alligators!
DeleteHello! I am a new follower, visiting from Barb's blog. Nice to meet you! I am so happy you all got to meet. Meeting blog friends in real life is the best! Have a cozy Sunday afternoon.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting, Billie Jo! It's always fun to meet new people here in Blogland! It seems as though the nicest people "hang out" here, and it's always wonderful to get acquainted. We have had a lovely, breezy and chilly Sunday afternoon...hubby watching football and me...well, little this and that...reading, doing other odds and ends...and now I'm here checking out the blogs! I look forward to getting to know you soon!! Thank you again for popping in!
DeleteWhat a great post! Wish I could meet all my blogging buddies! I really would like to visit that part of Florida, it looks so wild and pretty, except for the gators. That room of books, I might think of that when I need to think of a happy place.
