I have never done the Wednesday Hodgepodge before, but this one sounded interesting to me so I thought I might give it a try! Joyce over at
From This Side of the Pond blog is our hostess, and I've been reading other blogging friends' posts from this weekly meme for a long time, but never got around to joining in until now. I always thought it was interesting that she writes "From This Side of the Pond", and I live on a pond, albeit a very dry pond at the moment. So here we go...
The Wednesday Hodgepodge
Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 638
Here are the questions to this week's Hodgepodge. Answer on your own blog, then skate back here on Wednesday (January 28th) to add your link to the party. See you there!
1. I live in the south so we're pretty much only talking about the weather right now. Give us a weather report from where you live. Does the kind of weather you're having today affect your mood in some way? As I am typing this, here in north central Florida, it is currently 30 degrees. We will be having freezing temperatures every morning for the next week, and only warming up into the 50's mostly. This winter has been unusual for us here in Florida already! As far as affecting my mood? Well, I will be thankful when the freezing temperatures are over and we can get back to our normal kind of winter with cooler days and plenty of sunshine, although we need rain desperately here on MY side of the pond! (For those of you who are new to my blog, I live on a small pond that I've named "Still Waters Pond", and it has been completely dry this past fall and winter due to no rain in our area to speak of for quite a while. So we keep praying for some good rain to fill it back up!)
2. Avocados, kale, cauliflower and cottage cheese have all had their time to shine. 2026 brings us the year of the cabbage. Is this a vegetable you like? If so, what are some of your favorite dishes that call for cabbage?
Yes, I do like cooked cabbage as well as cole slaw made with raw cabbage. This receipe below is one of our old family favorites, and it's extra good right now during these very cold days! I made a big pot of this last week, and we enjoyed finishing up the leftovers a couple of days ago. Here's the receipe in case you're wondering what to make for dinner at your house today:
Hobo Stew
Cook a couple of slices of bacon, chopped into smaller pieces, in the bottom of a large soup kettle or dutch oven.
Brown 2 lbs. ground chuck in the pot, and drain off fat.
Add 1 medium chopped onion to the meat and cover and cook until onion is tender
Add 1 can diced stewed tomatoes (I used the ones with green pepper & onion and celery added)
Add approximately 3 cups of water to the pot, cover and let simmer while you chop up the next ingredients:
Add four medium, peeled and cut potatoes
Add four or five peeled and sliced carrots
Add two cups of chopped cabbage.
Add salt and pepper and garlic powder to season.
If needed, add more water, cover and let cook until all vegetables are tender.
(All ingredients can be added according to how much you want to make! This will make a nice dutch oven pot full of stew)
Serve with fresh, hot cornbread. We like to crumble our corn bread onto the stew.
We used to make this in Girl Scouts, and would put all ingredients in a large metal coffee can, cover tightly with foil, and bury under the coals of our campfire and let it cook all day. It would be delicious for supper!
3. Was a Cabbage Patch Doll a part of your childhood? Or maybe your children's childhood? What's a toy trend from your childhood you remember wanting for your own?
I am too old to have had a Cabbage Patch doll in my "first childhood", but I was given one for Christmas one year by my brother in law in my "second childhood". And I still have her today:
She was one of the "Little Astronauts", and I named her Robin Noel, because she has "red" hair, and I always said if I had a little girl with red hair I would name her Robin Noel. I ended up with three sons, all with brown hair like their daddy, so this is my little red headed girl. LOL. And also, with three boys, I had no good excuse to buy dolls for my children.
As far as from my own real childhood, I had a Tiny Tears Doll. And I still have her, although she is quite a bit worse for the wear...but she's over 70 years old, so what do you expect for a rubber baby doll? She was once stored in the attic at my parents' home (in hot Florida), so that is why the rubber on her arms and legs became cracked from the heat. But I just can't bear to throw her away, since I've had her this long. I'll leave that up to my adults sons someday.
4. Something you've spent a lot of time doing lately?
Chasing around our outdoor cat named Blackie, who is trying his best to become an indoor cat, and we are working at that very gradually, especially with these very cold nights. He comes inside to sleep in a kennel/crate, and then we let him out in the morning to eat and walk around the house inside until it warms up a bit outside. However, I must stay it feels a LOT like following a two year old toddler around, watching out for where he goes and what he might decide to get into.
He also likes to play "hide and seek", and he thinks he's hiding from me under this rolling cart in our kitchen! LOL.
And here he is, waiting outside our bedroom doors for my hubby to come out. Even though hubby is a reluctant participant in this experiment, Blackie is doing his best to win him over. LOL.
5. Somehow it's the last week of January...sum up your month in just three sentences.
We started out the New Year getting over bad colds that interrupted our Christmas holidays, but thankfully we are fine now. It's also been rather expensive due to some dental issues that had to be resolved. We are ending up the month with frigid temperatures and are hoping February will be healthier and warmer and filled with happy blessings.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
Yesterday morning, on a chilly ride to the dentist to get my permanent crown put on, (which was another episode all its own),
I learned something new and wonderful about our new to us car that we bought last year in the summertime...
That little symbol on the dash that looks like this picture below is actually a button for a heated seat!!! We did not know we had heated seats in this car, and boy, was that ever a welcome surprise!!! Here in Florida we've seldom needed such a gadget, but let me tell you, it sure feels wonderful!!!!! Woo Hoo! Now I find myself looking forward to taking a ride just so I can turn that thing on! LOL.
Okay friends, old and new, this was fun for my first go-round on the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Not sure if I will make it a weekly event, but we shall see how things are going by this time next week. Until then, take care and stay safe and warm, wherever you are!! Thank you, Joyce, for allowing me the joy of joining up today!
Hi, I loved reading your answer to #3! Cute, your second childhood. I think that is amazing you still have your Tiny Tears Doll.
ReplyDeleteHappy Hodgepodge!!
Carla
Thank you, Carla. I may be in my 3rd childhood by now...I'm really just a little girl in an old body. LOL. Yes, I still have my Tiny Tears doll, my Barbie doll, and a couple of Madame Alexanders and a Ginny Doll from my childhood. Then there are quite a few others that have been gifted to me in my older childhood, beyond the Cabbage Patch doll. I don't buy them for myself...somehow people enjoy giving dolls to me when they really wish they had the nerve to keep them for themselves. LOL. Thank you for visiting here with me. I came over to your place on the The River and enjoyed visiting there as well! Have a blessed day!
DeleteMy girls had Cabbage Patch dolls and loved them.
ReplyDeleteYour Hobo stew looks very good. I'm saving it!
We have heated seats and I love them. They're getting a good workout lately. The current windchill temp is -2. Brrr!
Oh brrrr indeed! -2 is cold. Yes, you could use some Hobo Stew! The Cabbage Patch doll craze was pretty wild for a while! Actually, I was thankful I didn't have any little girls who would've required me to stand in long lines to get them one! LOL. My doll came along after the really wild frenzy was over. But it was till fun!
DeleteStay warm...or take a ride in your warm heated seats car! LOL.
Supposedly it will freeze here with possible ice(!!) on the roads Sunday and on. Hope that's not true! I'm definitely grocery shopping before this weekend to make sure the doggies have their cooked chicken gizzards. Been having to feed them carnivore like us. They're health is so much improved doing this. 🥰
ReplyDeleteI like cabbage but it doesn't like me. Gives me IBS. In fact, all veg's do. Since I quit eating them I've lost weight (no more bloated tummy) and no terrible episodes. That last one I had I thought it was going to stop my heart. I feel so much better staying away from anything poisonous to my system.
Not a fan of dolls. Even when I was little I played with bows & arrows, guns, knives, etc., and rode my bike around town until dark. Made my own lean-to's in the woods. It was a magical childhood in that respect.
Y'all stay warm! I'm ready for Spring. 🥶
Wow, I'm glad the doggies like the chicken gizzards...I'd hate to see them go to waste. LOL. Actually we cut them up when we make giblet gravy at Thanksgiving to put over our stuffing. That's the only time I eat them. Re:cabbage, I do have to be careful with it also, but once in a while it actually helps me take care of "business". Just have to take some "gas-x". LOL. When I was little I also played outside with all of the above as you...especially making forts in the woods. We lived in the woods in Florida and never saw a snake in the woods where we were playing, but the huge rattlesnakes liked to sunbathe in our front yard instead. LOL. I was outside more than I was inside as a child. But I did enjoy playing with Barbie with my cousin during school vacations. We built them houses and made their furniture, etc., so it was actually more instructional and constructional than just playing with dolls. LOL. And yes, we are ready for spring too. I hope you all don't get too much ice. That's the difficult stuff to deal with. Stay warm and safe.
DeleteAww thank you for the ending blessing. I remember many groups put that to music during Covid.
ReplyDeleteI love your answers. I have 2 Cabbage Patch dolls given to me by my Hubby, One is a redhead and the other a cute baby doll. They sit in our guest room.
I do love cabbage too but its not too fond of me, so its not on the menu very often.
Most of our time has been occupied with eBay. Its really time consuming but if we make a sale its worth it. At the same time we have been dealing with Dave's computer and it ornery issues and spending too much time on the phone trying to get things straightened out. Not done yet ... Sigh ...
Great answers and I'm glad you joined that link. I do it now and then too.
Stay warm and when it gets too cold hop in your car and sit and get cozy.
Sue
Oh, you have a red headed Cabbage Patch doll too? I'd love to see her. And re:cabbage...I love it but it doesn't always love me either. Gas-x helps some. LOL. I hope you can get Dave's computer figured out...that's no fun. These things that were made to make our lives easier have a tendency to complicate matters sometimes more than help! Since we didn't grow up with them, it doesn't come as naturally to us as it does to the younger generations as to how to fix things. It's good to keep some young people around who can help with those issues as needed. Take care and enjoy your probably warmer weather than the eastern half of the country right now.
DeleteI love cabbage and that soup looks delish. Hobo Stew. I copied the recipe. My kids had Cabbage Patch - Andy was in to Ben Ten.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what "Ben Ten" was. I will have to look that up. My boys were into GI Joe and Star Wars. But they are probably older than your Andy. Is he a grandchild? I hope you like the Hobo Stew if you make it. It's really glorified hanburger vegetable soup. Sometimes I add other vegetables and make it soup. Anything hot and soupy is good right now!
DeleteI had that same Tiny Tears and I loved her. I also had a Cabbage Patch doll, alas, they aren't with me anymore. I love cabbage soup, I bet it sure warmed the bones on these out of the ordinary cold days. We're dipping back into the 20's this weekend. {{sigh}} I just want cold weather, not freezing!!! Hope you're enjoying a great day.
ReplyDeleteoops, I'm not Anonymous!!
DeleteMy sister and I both had Tiny Tears, and we played with them all the time when we were very little. I was Lucy, (I Love Lucy) and I named my baby "Little Ricky". LOL.
DeleteHobo stew sounds perfect to me. Need some right now to go along with this cold weather. How adorable is this little space cabbage patch doll...I don't think I've ever seen one. Great collectors item for sure. Oh how I love my heated seats in our car. my back seats have them as well. they sure make a huge difference.
ReplyDeleteI hope your cold is getting better. Some hot soup/stew would be really good for you. Yes, the Little Astronaut doll would be appropriate for living in Florida (Cape Canaveral/Kennedy). Although I prefer to dress her in "real clothes" like a little girl. And yes, the heated seat felt so good to me, I just wanted to keep riding around and not get out in the cold.
DeleteOh wow! It does sound strange to get freezing temperatures in Florida.
ReplyDeleteI love the sound of your Hobo Stew and the Little Astronaut Cabbage Patch Kid is just adorable.
It sounds like Blackie is keeping you busy. My dad has an outdoor cat and it has been sneaking indoors when it has been cold.
Yes, we are expecting temps in the low 20's over the weekend, which is really cold. Thank you for visiting. The hobo stew is a good dish for this kind of weather. And yes, Blackie keeps us hopping. We can't get out or in the door without him being right there. So he comes in for a while, and then we have to use a "treat" to get him to go back out. He knows how to play the game for sure! LOL.
DeleteWelcome to the Hodgepodge! So glad you joined in today. I have my baby doll from childhood too. She looks very well loved : ) She's in the attic but perhaps one of my granddaughters will want to play with her. I feel like her hair or lack of it will be an issue for them lol. Hope it warms up there soon! We have snow in our forecast for Saturday and these temps are unusual for SC too. Enjoy the rest of your week!
ReplyDeleteThank you for making the Hodgepodge available. Do you come up with the questions yourself? You do a great job with it. I've often thought of joining, but then I get busy with other projects. This was fun. Oh, it would be lovely to pass a loved doll/baby doll down to a granddaughter someday. Alas, not only did I have three boys, but I only have one grandchild, a grand SON. I don't see any other grandchildren in the forecast, but perhaps a great-granddaughter would be possible someday...I just hope I live that long! LOL. And yes, this is quite an unusal winter for all of us. Please take care and stay safe and warm. Thank you again!!
DeleteYour Hobo Stew looks sooo good, Pam! Unfortunately, my hubby can’t eat real high-fiber foods any more, so I won’t be making this. I did, however, bake your shortcake recipe over the weekend in my cast iron wedge pan. It was delicious and did not last long!!!
ReplyDeleteTiny Tears looks to have been very well loved. My Barbie was just like yours except she had the blond ponytail.
As for seat warmers in the car, I sometimes use mine even in the middle of summer. It just feels so good!
You did well with your first contribution to the Hodgepodge!
I understand about the high fiber foods, etc. It's almost too much for me, but I still like to eat it. I just choose a good time when it won't cause me unpleasant after effects when I need to go places, like to church or shopping. LOL. I'm glad you liked the strawberry shortcake. Oh, and yes, I may use my seat warmer in the summer too, especially for my lower back. I am so happy to make this discovery!!!
DeleteThat hobo stew sounds wonderful, Pam! Mostly, I'm envious of your soup kettle; I wonder if I might find one like it someday while prowling vintage markets.
ReplyDeleteYour olden rubber doll looks mighty precious but that blanket on which she lays looks exactly like one my mother crocheted!
Speaking of dolls -- I'm honestly envious of your Robin Noel. When they were all the rage I wanted one for myself but never followed through. This being the 40-year anniversary of the Challenger disaster, I like that's she's wearing her space suit. Never forget!
Thank you for the reminder about the 40 year anniversary of the Challenger disaster. I wasn't thinking about that this morning when I posted my Little Astronaut Cabbage Patch doll. Now I just posted a new post (an updated old one) about the Challenger disaster. I didn't want the day to go by without remembering.
DeleteThe blanket is one that my Aunt Margie embroidered for our first baby Benton. So it would be almost 55 years old! The "soup kettle" is a cast iron Dutch Oven. I've had it for years and I love it. You may find one at a flea market or something like that, or I think you can still buy them new, but they are probably expensive. I do enjoy using it for stuff like this. Thanks for visiting. I hope you are both doing well and staying warm enough.
Woohoo, on finding the heated seats!! I love it on my lower back!!!! I also love a good cabbage recipe. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYes, on the heated seat on the lower back! That is a definite yes, and what I like the most! Thank you for visiting.
DeleteNever had hobo stew. Sounds like a very economical meal. Yes I remember Tiny Tears. She was a favorite as well.No heated seats in our car. When we bought it, we decided against it since it doesn't get that cold, never thinking that we do drive up to the snow several times in the year. Can you use the heat seats with the AC on? I'd like it for my back! Enjoyed your post.
ReplyDeleteI think you can use it with the AC on, because I do have the AC on even though it is set for 74 degrees, which actually becomes heat. It's all the same system (AC/Heat)...you just change the temperature. So I assume you can use the heated seat anytime you need it, and it has 3 settings in our car. I was really surprised that it had it in this car. We don't have a lot of bells and whistles, so this was an unexpected blessing!!!
DeleteIt's great to see you joining in on the Hodgepodge!! I love seeing Blackie feeling so comfortable in the house. I think he has been a housecat at some time in his past. Has he used the litterbox yet? Maybe not, since he is still going out. Your Hobo Stew sounds yummy! I made vegetable soup today, with some cabbage in it, along with lots of other veggies. Stay warm up there!! xo
ReplyDeleteHe has used the litterbox for #1, but not #2. He does act like a housecat, but I don't know when because he's been a neighborhood cat for quite a while. I have pictures of him coming on our back porch that go back several years before I ever knew that our neighbor was feeding him. I think he always thought this was his house. LOL.
DeleteSuch fun to see you doing the Hodgepodge, Pamela! I haven't joined in because it simply doesn't fit the theme of my blog, but I love to visit as it gives me insights on other bloggers that I wouldn't have otherwise. Blackie will win John over at some point, guaranteed. How could he not be enamored? It amazes me that you still have your doll from childhood. I never played with dolls as a kid, but I had a collection of stuffed animals that my brother and I played with constantly. Perhaps, that was the origin for The Glade Series?
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
I can imagine that your collection of stuffed animals was an inspiration for your series. Was there, by chance, a squirrel in that collection?? God certainly gave you a wonderful gift and thankfully you used it for His honor and glory!! Thank you for your faithfulness to the Lord.
DeleteIt was fun reading your answers to this new hodgepodge of questions. It's still cold here but we're used to it. I feel for you southerners who are dealing with it right now. Stay warm. (I love those heated seat things too and use ours from. November till March!)
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
Thank you, Betsy. I hope you are doing well. Been praying for you as you are going through some things. I know you know that God is with you!!! (((HUGS)))
DeleteI too mentioned my Tiny Tears! She was a later generation than yours. She had blonde hair you could brush, and was had a light blue or light pink gingham dress and hat. I have lots of my old toys still, but I don't think I have her - unless she is at my parents' place.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I have learned from this week's Hodgepodge? That on "that" side of the pond coleslaw is spelled as two words! Every day's a school day! :o)
Hello Lady Ella! So nice to meet you here today! I was wondering what the name of your blog is, because when I click on your name "Lady Ella", it doesn't lead me to a blog, and I would love to get better acquainted! And oh, I would love to see a picture of your Tiny Tears! maybe I can find her online. I don't remember a blonde one, but like you said, it was a later generation, and I was probably on to bigger things by then. LOL. Have a blessed day, and thank you again for stopping by!
DeleteHi Pamela, thank you for replying! I would love to have you visit my blog! Sadly I made it private a while back, after experiencing some problems, so maybe that is why you hit a dead end. I have only done the Hodgepodge three times myself, as I felt I needed some new energy to what I write, but must admit it doesn't work so well when people can't easily visit. Maybe I need to be brave and rethink... Meanwhile, I will email you a link. (If you don't like what you find, that is OK - I won't mind :o) )
DeleteAs for Tiny Tears - you got me thinking/googling! And I found my brain was playing tricks, as the little dress and hat were not gingham but small flowers! I can't remember whether I had the blue and sister the pink, or v-v, but I will send you a photo of the blue.
PS Thank you for the blessing at the end of your post, and BTW your profile photo is really warm and welcoming!
Surprised to see you here. I didn't realize your pond was completely dry. Hope you get some rain to fill it up. That stew looks yummy. I can't believe it's from Girl Scouts. That's interesting. She's an astronaut, how cute! That's nice that you have let him in since he lost his pal. Glad you're feeling better now. Good for you. It's nice to have those seat warmers.
ReplyDeleteHello Pamela, it's Pamela here! Your hobo stew sounds yummy, perfect for a cold winter day. My husband is retired from the Navy and one of the places we lived was Jacksonville, Florida. I can remember going to church on Christmas Eve without coats! Ugh, crowns, I have a couple of those and they weren't fun. Lovely to meet you.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite way for cabbage is Cole Slaw but I do love to fry down the cabbage in a bit of butter and add slices of keilbasa--yum! I love the way Blackie is infiltrating your lives!
ReplyDelete
