Good Morning! It's Friday already...and I know some of our friends in the southeast and northern parts of the country are expecting a major winter storm this weekend, so you are definitely all in our thoughts and prayers. Praying you don't lose power due to the heavy ice on the power lines, and praying you will be able to stay "snug as a bug in a rug" in your warm cozy home. Whatever you do, please stay safe! Strangely, it will be in the high 70's and low 80's here in north central Florida this weekend, but that polar vortex of cold air will slip down our way next week, and we will be back in the 20's and 30's for a few days too (morning temps). I know that's not the same thing as you will be having, but for us it is still a challenge. Thankfully no ice or snow is expected here, but we will know that winter isn't over yet! Please stay in touch with us here in Blogland as you can, as we will be anxious to hear how you are doing.
We had a few stragglers from the Robin flock fly in for a drink and a bath this week on their way further south. I guess they got a late start and realized they'd better get a move on if they were going to escape all that freezing weather up north! I was happy to see them enjoying their bathtime before they flew away:
"Typical hush puppy ingredients include cornmeal, wheat flour, eggs, salt, baking soda, milk or buttermilk, and water, and may include onion, spring onion (scallion), garlic, whole kernel corn, and peppers. Sometimes pancake batter is used. The batter is mixed well, adjusting ingredients until thick, and dropped a spoonful at a time into hot oil. Many older recipes call for the batter to be cooked in the same oil as the fish it accompanies. The small corn dumplings are fried until crispy golden brown, and cooled.[9] Hush puppies are often served with seafood or barbecued foods. They are commonly made at home or served in restaurants advertising home-style food.
The first recorded use of the word dates to 1899.[5] The name has no verified origin. Etymology is attributed to a variety of sources; one such source alleges that the food was given the name when hunters and fishers would feed the food to dogs they brought with them in order to "hush them", or get them to quiet down."
This is a link to a recipe I found online that sounds pretty authentic. but there are a lot of variations, according to your particular tastes. I have often used a Jiffy Corn Muffin mix and added the chopped onions to it, and it turns out pretty good, but most people use white corn meal I think rather than the yellow. Again, it's whatever tastes good to you, and if you do them right, you will want more!
Regarding the Kitty Cat:Still, it was a good "photo op"...
Okay folks, that's it for this morning...gotta get a move on. I do pray you will have a blessed and beautiful day, regardless of the weather, and may God be with you and keep you safe and warm.

I am laughing about your stubborn black cat. I have a stubborn coal black Cockapoo. He is stubborn and naughty. The little girl Cockapoo (Coco) 'tells' on him. He is not supposed to go in the basement but he can jump and paw open the level doorknob. I have a 'lock' over it but sometimes forget to put it in place. Coco will come and yip and me and run back and forth to the door until I can coax him up the steps. lol. Typical sibling, right?
ReplyDeleteWe are MINUS 45˚F with wind chill this morning. I took my elderly neighbor's paper up to her porch for her and by the time I came back inside my face was numb. Schools and some business are closed today.
I do remember getting a freeze when we lived in lower Florida (around West Palm) and the problem is no one has clothes to wear when it is that cold. Coats, etc.Our kids were so cold and they didn't have heat in the classrooms (lots of them were open air) so the kids didn't have school for a couple of days. lol.
Happy weekend- xo Diana
I don't think I could survive -45 degree windchill! Goodness...I think I would leave the paper outside! LOL. You are a very kind neighbor, and I'm sure your neighbor appreciated it. Now please just stay warm and cozy inside. Of course, you do have those two pups to take outside! Too bad doggies can't use a litter box! LOL. Praying for all of you up there in the winter wonderland. (((HUGS)))
DeletePam, yes we are predicted to get a lot of snow in Nashua, NH, and I will be comfortable indoors with house chores and then reading and a new jigsaw puzzle to attempt. Blackie is making himself at home quite nicely.
ReplyDeleteOh, a winter storm is a great time to work on a new puzzle! I hope you all stay nice and cozy and warm in your apartment with a view of the wintry world outside! I can't wait to see the new pictures after the storm!
DeleteI love hush puppies, but they don't love my hips ha ha! Snow storm brewing here, and predicted subzero weather.
ReplyDeleteTrue, hush puppies are definitely not a diet food, but they are so good! LOL. Praying for you and your family in the winter storm. I know you are probably cooking up something good to keep you all warm and cozy. Take care and be blessed. God is with you.
DeleteOh Blackie! He has all of our hearts.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's cold here, right now -4 with a wind chill of -17!
Hush puppies are so good!
BRRRRR that's too cold!! I know you are happy to be safe and warm inside, and I hope you are able to stay that way!! Blackie sends his love. LOL.
DeleteHush puppies aren't something we normally eat, but this backstory is sure interesting! That's a beautiful chair! I just realized there's a similar design on a little footstool that belonged to my grandmother. I don't use it as such, but it makes a handy doorstop for my bedroom.
ReplyDeleteThank you for continuing to share the Life and Times of Blackie!
Thank you for visiting today. My grandmother used to do a lot of needlepoint designs. I am assuming she made this and there's another one that has a similar design. It's definitely not something I want Blackie to sink his little claws into! LOL. I hope you are out of harms way with this winter storm. It looks like it is sparing most of Alabama. Either way, I hope you have a blessed and safe/warm weekend.
DeleteI don't believe I've ever had hush puppies but they do sound good. I don't think I would like them fried in the same oil as fish though.
ReplyDeletePractically the whole month of January has been rain free. Mild temperatures and sunny. Can't complain.
Glad to see, Blackie making himself at home.
Now you need to try and make some hush puppies! Do you ever eat fish/seafood? I guess they are a southern thing. And I prefer to cook them in their own clean oil too.
DeleteFor some reason blogger is not allowing me to "reply" to comments above. I trust it is just a momentary glitch and soon I will be able to respond, but if not, Please know that I love your comments and thank you for them! Anyone else having this problem??
ReplyDeleteLater: it seems to have fixed itself, whatever the problem was!
DeleteI've only had hush puppies once in my life and they were amazingly good 😊
ReplyDeleteI guess I am surprised that places in other parts of the country don't have hush puppies with seafood. I guess it's a truly southern thing!
DeleteWow, that sweet kitty sure knows how to get into your heart. That needlepoint chair is beautiful and the pillow is perfect.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info on hush puppies. I'm sure I have had them before but don't remember them.
Love the harbingers of spring taking a bath before they are on their way. Great shots.
Sue
Yes, kitties and puppies have that special charm. And I'm afraid I'm a soft touch. But not on the needlepoint chair! LOL.
DeleteBlackie is testing the waters to see what he can get by with . . . he did look quite comfy on your special chair. We're as ready for the weather as we can be, my biggest concern is the power because of my oxygenator. I do have a portable unit but it only last a few hours before the battery is depleted. I can go sit in the car and charge it, but that's not fun, but I'll do what has to be done. God is with me.
ReplyDeleteOh, I pray you don't lose power! If so, do you have somewhere you can go...do any of your kids have a generator? Praying all will be well. Yes, God is with you, and I pray He will keep your power going!!!
DeleteHappy Friday Pamela! I enjoyed seeing all of the pictures of Blackie in his "new" home. He's getting more and more comfortable and trusting of you and I love it. We're not expecting snow but it IS cold. This morning it was -21F with the windchill, -2F without the wind and it's just supposed to get colder. We venture out to take Zoey out to do her "business" and then she wants back in right away. No sniffing to see if another dog was out there before her or just sniffing the wind the way dogs do. Just in and out and we're happy to do the same.
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing the robins bathing. Their feathers needed to get the dust off of them before continuing on south. So sweet of you to take care of them.
I love hush puppies, sometimes also called "fritters" here. They are SO good with a bit of honey dripped on them.
Stay safe and warm.
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
That's just TOO cold!!! I don't blame Zoey for not wanting to stay outside and "sniff". It's too bad you can't train a dog to use a litter box in the winter! LOL. Take care and stay warm and cozy where you are!
DeleteAh, the saying on the pillow. I remember when you weren’t too excited about those kitties but they stole your heart.❤️ ❤️
ReplyDeleteYes, they have a way of doing that... (((HUGS)))
Deletein the deep south, we ate hush puppies because they were cheap, we always knew they were to keep the hunting dogs quiet, but they also kept hungry children quiet. Mother mad them from white or yellow corn meal, and sometimes if there were no eggs, she just made them from boiling water and cornmeal. I love those as good as these. I love all hushpuupies. and I love Blackie
ReplyDeleteAnd I am certain Blackie would love YOU too! I wonder what Beau would think of him? Or vice versa! Yes, you are a true southern gal who knows her Hush Puppies! LOL.
DeleteWe love Cracker Barrel and so glad they kept things as they were. I do enjoy making alot of their copycat recipes. I just made the Cocola Chocolate cake and it is sooooo good!
ReplyDeleteYes, we are happy they kept things like they were also! It just wouldn't be the same warm country experience otherwise, and I think most people enjoy that! Oh, I can imagine how good that cake must be! Very moist! Thank you for visiting today!! Hope you stay warm!!
DeleteWe're praying for those in the way of the winter storms too. It could be a really bad one further north and to the west.
ReplyDeleteI gotta stay out of Cracker Barrel. Can't help but spend money in the gift area. 😁Thankfully neither of us like the industrial food they serve. That stuff is what's making people fat and sick. Been trying to stick with single ingredient foods: meat, seafood, chicken, eggs, butter, etc. Safer that way. 💞
Hush puppies sound yummy. They sound like a good addition to some of the cafe meals we buy occasionally. Thanks for taking the time to research and share with us. I think Blackie is making his home in your hearts, isn't he. Now to try and keep him off the needlepoint chair :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your prayers, Pamela, for all of us in the line of these storms and freezing temperatures! Just a heads up: If we lose electricity, I won't be able to comment or even post a blog. Hoping to put something up tomorrow for publication on Tuesday. Here's hoping! Love that Blackie is truly becoming a part of your family, too. Just tell him that the chair is off limits! Blessings to you and John!
ReplyDeleteit was a beautiful day, wasn't it?! I think the best hush puppies I ate were at a restaurant in Ponce Inlet (I can't remember the name!) but they served them at the table in a little metal bucket and we ate right through them! Yum!
ReplyDeleteLate and passing through quickly, but happy to see Blackie is getting used to being inside. He will need to explore everything. It's a cat thing. He will settle down once he has investigated and claimed everything as his own. I'm so glad I got to see him when I was there, and YOU! xo
