Rainy Days and Mondays

"Welcome back. Toni Taddeo began this Tuesday 4 question and answer postings and I am continuing it in her honor..
It's been a bit rainy and stormy across the USA this spring and I have seen so many negative sentiments about Mondays. Karen Carpenter sang about rainy days and Mondays always getting her down. Can we discuss it?"
1. How do you feel about rainy days? Do they make you happy or sad? Do they always get you down?
Actually, I would love to have a rainy day, no matter which day of the week it is! We did get a brief surprise shower Sunday afternoon, but it didn't last long enough to do much good except that it cooled things down a little bit for a while. I enjoy rainy days as long as they aren't bad storms.
2. How about Monday. Do they get you down or do you think that just might be a habit of negative thinking?
I guess when I was still working I didn't always like to see Monday come around. Now that I am retired one day is pretty much the same as another, so Mondays really aren't such a big deal.

3. Did you play in puddles as a kid? Or were you not the kind that liked getting wet and muddy?
I wish I could find a picture of me as a very little child when we still lived on the farm in Pennsylvania. We had a farm pond that was suitable for swimming. I was still much too young to swim in the pond with my older siblings, so I usually sat along the edge and played in a mud puddle. I am not sure how my mother got me cleaned up before going back in the house, but I'm sure she found a way. Also my sister and I used to make mud pies. I've never been afraid of splashing in the puddles when it rains. It's all a part of growing up...and maybe for some of us...it's a way of never growing up...
4. Are there foods/meals that you find especially comforting on stormy days? Nosy people want to know!!
If it is also still kind of chilly, a bowl of soup or some kind of stew/chili is always comforting on a stormy day. It's also a good time for a cup of tea and a cookie or something yummy. Actually, it's also a good day to bake cookies. I have listed several old posts down below that tell about my rainy day activities.
Actually, they say a rainy day is a good day for ducks...and these two Black Bellied Whistling Ducks came flying onto Still Waters Pond Sunday evening after it had rained for a short while! I've never seen them here before, and they came back again today! I hope they will decide to stick around for a while. I'd love to hear them "whistle"!

So far, our Summer is cool and breezy. Very usual but so nice! I like rainy days too. We could use some of the wet stuff up this way too. 💙
ReplyDeleteMy sister and I made mud pie sandwiches putting mud between two leaves I had forgotten about it until reading your post. Amazing isn't it how we amused ourselves without electronics? I hope your two ducks hang around I have never seen any like that.

The rain is pretty on your pond and the ducks don't care! I remember you showing the crane out on the nest in the rain too. They persevered through it!
your ducks are so sweet! I like those rain photos. we had 4 minute quick sprinkles shower yesterday. not even 1/4 inch. but welcomed. I do not like rainy days, that is why I like Florida. in the past, we had rain 4 or 5 times a week, but it would come suddenly and dump two inches and be gone in 15 minutes to half hour. if I don't see sunshine I get down in the dumps. right now it could rain for a week and I would be happy because we need it so badly. I was a puddle jumper and in Kentucky, there is red clay in the dirt. we made clay cookies and used old cookie cutters to cut them out and put on old cookie sheet and bake in the sun. they would harden like rocks. wading in puddles in the dirt streets we lived on was wonderful and playing in the rain was too
ReplyDeleteHere in California we get our rains in the winter. So for me, rainy days are cozy. Occasionally we’ll have a summer rain or mountain thunderstorms. I always enjoy them. As for Mondays, I always like new beginnings and Mondays are that for me. A clean slate.

ReplyDeleteI'm with you about rain, Pamela - as long as there are no severe storms with it, I don't mind rain at all, especially if I can enjoy it from inside the house. Driving in it? I'd rather not! :) Blessings!

Hello Faith, and welcome to my blog! I'm not sure that I've "met" you here before! I wanted to answer your question...we live in north central Florida, and this is the first time I've ever seen these ducks here at our pond. They have been showing up over the past few days, so I am hopeful we will see them more often. Right now the pond is a little low due to lack of rain, but once the summer thunderstorms (and possible hurricanes) start up it will fill back up nicely. DeleteI'm so glad I got the weeds whacked this morning, because it's pouring now. Actually, since having stepped out of the rat race I now enjoy a (gentle) rainfall. Mondays, too! The only drawback are those times I have to be on the freeway in the rain and every other driver thinks he's at the Indy 500.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Summer's not officially here, but it sure feels that way ... already I'm missing the opportunity to make thick hearty stews or chili. It just doesn't feel the same.
Hey, Pam... I really enjoyed your answers. I was definitely a mud pie kind of gal! It was actually one way I was known as my neighbors and I had a mud pie bakery set up in their yard with all the utensils you can imagine! And if the boys messed with us we jsut threw the dried pies at them and that kept them away!! Now when it comes to cooking on a rainy day. Id have to say you had some interesting ideas, but I have to say reading a good mystery on a rainy day is really great!!!

It's fun to learn that so many of us once made mud pies! We even put little pieces of corn in them, as we had the kind of dry corn cobs in the "corn crib" that we fed to the cows and pigs, so that made our mud pies extra special! LOL. I bet the boys in the neighborhood didn't mess with you girls too much after having mud pies thrown at them! LOL. Those were the good old days when kids actually went outside to play!
DeleteThat is a beautiful rainbow, Pam! Those ducks are beautiful!! I don't think I have ever seen that breed before. They almost look like decoys, they are so colorful!! I agree with your answer about Mondays. Back when I was retired, I used to say I had six Saturdays and one Sunday. Hugs!

It's been raining pretty hard here in the PNW the last few days but that is ending and warm weather is on the way! I enjoyed your answers.
ReplyDeletePam: I dislike being a "downer" but I find rainy days rather depressing. Most of those days, I like to pile down on my couch and either do a lot of napping or read a good book. Lately, it's been resting. Had some issues this week that have caused me to be "down". Peace and blessings to you and yours.
