Wednesday Treasures~Light in the Darkness

It's the last Wednesday of October already! Yikes! Where has this month gone?  It's been busy and beautiful...we've enjoyed some cooler weather that actually feels fall like, even though it's kind of warmed up a little and is a bit humid, but I'll take these 70's over the 90's any day!

Someone asked if the Sand Hill Cranes were showing up on Still Waters Pond more often now that there's a little bit of water on the pond...Well, yes, as a matter of fact, they have been flying in and hanging around for a while most every day lately...

They, like the rest of the birds (and me too) are anxiously awaiting for the algae bloom to dissipate and some more fresh water to fill the pond...

Here's how it looks out there right now...

We are supposed to be getting some more rain throughout the rest of the week and into next week, so here's hoping it will break up that algae and add the water we need...

Meanwhile, on another note...
So many of you do the Wednesday Hodgepodge, which can be found HERE, if you wish to link to it. I don't usually participate, just because I can't remember to do it every week and I don't want to start something I can't keep up with. But I do read so many posts from this weekly meme since so many of my friends do participate.  This week there was one question that I wanted to answer, so here it is...

"3. Pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, poppy, chia...your favorite seed on the list? What's something you like to make/eat that calls for one of these seeds in the recipe? "

Here would be my answer if I were doing the Hodgepodge...I eat this Nature's Path Organic Pumpkin Seed and Flax Granola almost every day on my bowl of yogurt. If I have fresh fruit, like strawberries or blueberries in season, I will add them to the dish, and it makes a wonderful snack and/or breakfast.   It's really yummy!  I order this online from Amazon, but Walmart also carries it in a smaller package.

Now, moving right along to one of my favorite topics...did you know that yesterday, October 27th, was National Black Cat day?  I didn't either, until I saw it on Facebook.  Of course you know that I'm rather fond my my Black Cat, "Blackie".  So here is where he was just a few minutes ago when I started working on this post...and I captured this picture before he decided it was time to go, which he did a minute ago...when he starts biting at my hand while I'm trying to type and grabbing my hand with his paws and not allowing me to handle the mouse or the keyboard, then it's time to go...and outside he went.

Okay, so that brings me to another question from the Wednesday Hodgepodge, which I am not doing, but I am sort of doing.  Thank you, Joyce, for your questions.

2. What does Halloween look like in your home and/or neighborhood these days? Do you participate?

Well, yes, I do participate in my neighborhood, and somewhat in my home, but in a very fun and happy way. I don't get into the darker side of Halloween at all, but I do enjoy the trick or treaters who come to our door, and I try to make it a more positive experience for the children.

Here's what I wrote last year on October 30th about my feelings about Halloween:

"It's hard to believe it's already the end of October and tomorrow is Halloween. I know many of you don't "celebrate Halloween", and I really don't celebrate it either. But I do participate in one way that I think is meaningful. Our neighborhood actually gets a lot of trick or treaters, and to me, I think it's a good way to show some love and appreciation for the children of our community. We've never had any unpleasant things happen on Halloween here, just a lot of little children with their parents, walking through the neighborhood dressed in their fun and pretty and interesting costumes, "begging for candy". I love to welcome them and make over their costumes, and give them lots of smiles. Last year I started a new tradition of including a card with a scripture verse written on it with their little ziploc bag of candy. It is my hope and prayer that the parents will take the time to read the verse to their children (or the child read it for themselves), and that it will raise a question as to what it means or where did it come from. I call it "planting a seed of faith". We just never know how that little verse of God's Word might take root and bloom in the heart and life of the child and/or the parents. This might be the only opportunity we have to share the love of Christ with these little ones.

I know not everyone has a lot of children come into their neighborhoods anymore, and a lot of places don't even do door to door trick or treating. But if your community does, maybe think about the opportunity you could have to share some words of hope and love and faith with others before you turn off your porch light. Remember, Jesus said in Matthew 19:14 ~

... “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”

This might be the only opportunity these little ones have to hear any positive things about God. Just a thought to ponder..."

So that being said, that is what I am planning to do again this year, and I already have the candy ready to put in the little bags, along with the Bible verses that I've been collecting all year long with this in mind.

I also saw these cute Halloween cards with black cats on them at one of our dollar stores, and I bought them intending to send them to someone, but never got around to mailing them out on time, so I am sharing them here with you so you can all enjoy them. Consider these a gift from Blackie to you!

"The card on the left says "Little thoughts of YOU keep crossing my path."

The inside says 'And nothing makes me happier than that! Have a Happy Halloween."

The other card that says "Happy Halloween" on the front says "Hope everything's happy and bright on your side of the pumpkin patch!"

Now that we have a black cat, I just couldn't resist those cute cards!!

Speaking of Blackie again...here he is doing what he loves best...attacking my shoe/foot anytime he can either catch me sitting down or even when I am standing...he grabs my shoe and starts biting on it and hugging it like it's a long lost friend...
Who Me???? Do I look like I would attack my mommy's foot like that???

Uh, yeah...see that pink tongue? He is licking his chops for a bite of my tootsie. Thankfully he can't bite through the shoe (yet!).

"What are you looking at me like that for? I'm just having fun!"

Yes, he does have his sweet moments, in between attack mode! LOL.
Truly, life with our Blackie is never dull.  Ya Gotta love him.

I wonder if you all have been enjoying the full moon this week? It has been so gorgeous. These pictures were actually taken today in the early morning, around 5:30 a.m., when I got up to feed Blackie.   I loved having a few peaceful moments on the backporch, giving thanks to the Lord for the light that He gives us, and for giving us the opportunity to let His light shine through us! What a joy and privilege it is to carry His light into the darkness...

John 1:4-5 NKJV
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Matthew 5:14-16 NKJV
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand,
and it gives light to all who are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

John 8:12 NKJV
12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

These are my treasures for this last Wednesday of October.  As we close out this month I look forward to preparing for Thanksgiving, and spending more time in giving thanks to the Lord for all He has done for us! We are blessed to be His children!!

Have a blessed and wonderful rest of your week...and go let your light shine in the darkness!!

P.S. One more thing...for those of you who have been concerned...I finally have a CT Scan scheduled for next week, Nov. 3rd.  I am feeling fine, and am not anticipating anything bad, but it will be good to rule things out.  Thank you again for your kind thoughts and prayers.

  2. Your are still (always) in my prayers!! I love all the photos of Blackie, the Sandhills, and yes, I've noticed the amazing moon. Your pictures are great!! I saw on the news that there won't be another full moon on Halloween until 2039. I dare say I won't be here to see it so that makes this one extra special!! Sending you hugs!!

    1. 2039...that's only 13 years, Terri. I'd be 89, you'd be 88. We may live to see that full moon again on Halloween! Don't cut yourself short yet! There's still a lot of living to do! (Unless Jesus returns and takes us all home, which would be marvelous!!!!) I hope you are having a good day and that your eyelids are healing nicely, in spite of how they may look! LOL. (((HUGS)))

  3. Hi Pam wow you have cranes! That must be so interesting. The herons are the largest bird, we have well maybe with the exception of the turkey buzzards. Some of those are huge and the red hawks. When my golden retriever was alive we used to sit together on the grass every day in the afternoon. He was a big boy 90 lbs. and one of the truly gentlest creatures God ever made, :) and he would roll over on his back so he could sun his fluffy snowy white belly and get some scratches. Not even a minute later I would look up and see the shadows of several buzzards circling us! A couple of times one would dive at us put immediately put on the brakes as soon as the dog moved! It was so funny almost like a cartoon. Those are beautiful moon pictures you took, they came out really good. They reminded me of a scripture in Psalm 8:3,4 "When I see in your heavens, the works of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have prepared, what is mortal man that you keep him in mind and a son of man that you take care of him?" It's amazing to ponder how vast the universe is some times and how little we are in comparison, yet God loves us, takes care of us and gives us everything we need to be happy. :). Hope you have a nice evening!

    1. That's funny about the dog and the buzzards. I'm so glad the dog moved in time! LOL. I've thought about that the few times in life when I could still get down and lay on the grass and look up at the sky. It would be my luck to fall asleep and wake up to have buzzards circling over me. LOL. Yes, I love Psalm 8 too. I think of it often when viewing the skies and stars and sunrises and sunsets. We are so blessed to be able to see the vastness of God's creation all around and above us! We are blessed to be His children. Thank you for visiting and sharing your thoughts. I enjoyed them!!!

  4. Nope still not doing Halloween! 😀 I think its wonderful what you do for the children in your neighborhood. Since you have a heart for unsaved children, have you ever considered getting involved with Child Evangelism Fellowship? That's actually how I came to Christ and out of the darkness. A teacher at the school Michael attended invited to take my 2 sons to a 5 day club at a home. Both boys came home and announced they had Jesus in their heart. Reluctantly, I let them go to a Monday after school, Good News Club. 3 months later I had Jesus in my heart. Then I went on to hold both the summer 5 day clubs and the Monday after school club for 4 years. In that time I saw many parents come to faith.Children just naturally fall in love with Jesus and really do understand the message when presented properly.
I can't do Halloween because of my dark past. It's reopening doors and no matter what anyone tells me, I am unable to partake. I've had real encounters with demonic evil. For me, its like telling a alcoholic, they can have a beer. I left all of that behind me, lost all my friends! Every single one of them, when I came to Christ. There is no going back for me.
It's obviously a calling for you. Following up with the child and family for discipleship and plugging them into a church is a treat for the family that can last for all eternity.

    1. I understand and respect your thoughts regarding Halloween. And God is using you to share His light in so many other ways that are extremely valuable and meaningful. I pray for you in the ministry of caring for women who are in a crisis situation. We each have our own callings in life and what is meaningful for us to do. Regarding the Child Evangelism Fellowship, I do remember the back yard Good News Clubs...but haven't heard of or seen one in many years. I'm not sure if it is still an active ministry, but it certainly had a wonderful purpose and led many children to Christ. I'm not sure that I have the energy for such an endeavor now at this stage in life, but I am doing what I can to at least open the door and I pray that it will lead to some meaningful conversations between the parents and child. It's planting a seed. Some of us plant, others water, and God brings the increase. (from 1Corinthians 3:6). If we each do our part, there will be a harvest. Thank you for your words of encouragement. Have a blessed and wonderful rest of your week.

  5. Pamela, I'm keeping you in my prayers and I'm so thankful that you got that CT scan scheduled in order to rule anything serious out. Sometimes, modern medical innovations can be lifesaving, and I'm so thankful for my own treatment at Emory Winship. God is in it all, dear friend!

    1. Not this girl! I value my toes and feet too much! I've seen what his claws and teeth can do on my hands and arms. He thinks they're love bites...I think otherwise and out he goes! LOL. He does try to play with hubby's bare feet and rubber sandals...hubby is fortunate to still have his toes intact. LOL.

  8. Good to hear you're doing okay, still, the CT scan should be done. Not any halloween here at my Bayside Bungalow, but I do have a lot of fall. I really like the idea of putting scripture cards in the candy bags. That's a great idea. That Blackie, he is jealous of the time you spend on the computer instead of playing with him. lol

    1. Thank you, Mary. Please pray with me that the scripture verses will literally speak to the people/children who receive them. That's the whole purpose of it. And yes, Blackie is a bit jealous. Maybe a tad bit spoiled already too. But we have fun.
I hope you have a blessed and wonderful day.

  9. Oh Pam, I love your response to Debby and I really like your wording of not celebrating Halloween but participating by "planting seeds". That's my feelings about it too. I love seeing the Littles and the older ones that I give a smile to and a kind word about their costumes. I don't think some of them even know how to respond to smiles and a bit of chat...
I totally dislike the Dark side but I try to be the Light.

    1. The first year we lived here in this house I was not prepared for the influx of children coming down our street for trick or treat. I felt really bad that I didn't have any candy to pass out and literally felt guilty for hiding behind my door with no light on while all those children and parents were passing by my door. I vowed that the next year I would be ready for them, and then the Lord gave me the idea about adding the Bible verses to the bags of candy. How often do we have an opportunity to share God's Word with children/parents right outside our own doorstep? I don't see it as participating in "Halloween" per se, but reaching out to children with a smile and a kind word and a message from God's Word with some sweet candy. I know not everyone is in a position to do this, but it is something that God showed me that I could do without ever having to leave my house. God promised in Isaiah 55:11 "So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it." That is my prayer...that God's Word will not return to Him void, but it shall accomplish what He pleases... I just have to do my part to be faithful to share the Word, and He will do the rest.

  10. Spooky skies, woooo!
I so love the little Bible verses you include in the trick-or-treat baggies, Pam. In such a time of uncertainty, I do believe these will make a difference.
I responded to your comment on my blog, but in case you didn't see, I've put those pumpkin seed/granola in my Amazon cart. Oui yogurt has become my evening fav, but after a while it, too, gets boring. Thanks for the idea!
I'm late getting to Blogger, but I hope you and John enjoy a most blessed evening!

  11. I am not a fan of Halloween. I absolutely love Autumn! The Scripture cards are a fabulous idea, Pamela! Cats are great companions. Not sure if you know of Jackson Galaxy, but he is a cat behaviourist and musician. He has a YouTube channel and he deals with all types of behaviour issues. 90% of the issues are actually caused by humans...you will see what I mean if you have a chance to check out his channel and videos. It isn't that the humans deliberately or intentionally cause the issues, but it is because they don't know how to deal with the cat, they don't have enough knowledge. When I had cats (which is most of my life up until just a few years ago), I always clipped their claws every 3 weeks. I knew how to do this...but if you don't, a veterinarian or pet store staff member can give you tips. Perhaps there are videos on this as well. It is helpful for both the cat as well as the humans.
Pamela, please know that you are in my prayers in reference to your health and any tests you may need to have done.
Your photos are lovely, and I love the Halloween cards and photos of Blackie!
I really appreciate you sharing the Scripture verses as well.
Dear Pamela, I am wishing you a wonder filled weekend filled with love, happiness and good health. God bless you. Thank you so much for sharing.

    1. Thank you, Linda. I will check out the videos about the cat behavior. Blackie and I could use some good "lessons". He is still mostly an outdoor cat, so he files his nails outside, but I also have a scratching pad for him inside, which he loves. But we definitely could use some advice on some of his indoor behavior issues...mostly about his methods of getting our attention and controlling our behavior! LOL. Thank you for your kind words and prayers. I hope you have a blessed and wonderful rest of your week as well.
