Quick Friday Post on a Chilly Day

Well, yes it did get down to 29 degrees early this morning here in north central Florida.  It's currently 54 at 2:00 p.m., and bright and sunny.

My current view

There was frost everywhere this morning...That's the top of our car as seen through the window early this  morning.  I didn't take anymore pictures of the frost outside, because that would've require going outside, and I didn't want to do that!

However, I do have a story to tell you.  You remember that I showed you this lovely "tent" HERE the other day...  and I had such high hopes that it would be a good solution for a place to bring Blackie indoors and out of the freezing cold and safe from being able to roam freely throughout the house while we were sleeping since he's not yet a trained house cat...

This is the "pet playpen", which I purchased at Walmart.  It really looked like a great solution.

However, first of all, Blackie didn't want to go inside it last evening when we were getting ready to go to bed.  He would explore it, but run back out as soon as I tried to zip him in there.  Finally I decided to just let him go back outside and sleep in his nice warm chair with a blanket draped over it and his self-warming cushion underneath his body, which does keep him quite warm. There he is right now, but this picture was taken through the window and it's not real clear. He's kind of half under the glass table on the porch, and cozied up in the chair and sound asleep.

I decided last night that I would wait until the temperature really started dropping and then I would go out and get him off the porch and put him in the tent inside until morning.  And that's what I did. Around 2:30 in the morning I looked at the weather app on my phone and it said the temperature was down to 32, which is freezing. So I bundled myself up (no pictures of me with my hoodie  and sweatpants over my nightgown), and when I opened up the back door Blackie got down out of his chair and ran right to me. So I scooped him up and brought him inside and placed him in the tent and before he could object I had the door zipped up tight.  He kind of paced back and forth for a minute, but he didn't meow a word.  I reassured him he would be nice and safe and warm in there and I told him he should just lay down and go back to sleep. And then I headed back to bed myself and prayed that he would do just that.

I did finally get a couple of hours of sleep, but at 5:00 a.m. I thought I'd better tiptoe out there and check on him. As soon as I opened our bedroom door I could hear him meowing rather plaintively, so I rushed to see what was the matter.  I didn't have my camera with me, but I wouldn't have had time to take a picture anyway. The poor kitty was crying because the stupid 'pop up tent" decided to collapse in on top of him (thankfully it is very lightweight), and he was trapped inside with no way to escape. The tent came in that box shown above, all wound up tightly and "spring loaded", so that when you open the box and undo the tie on the tent, it springs open into that full size tent. Well, I wondered how the sides would keep from springing back down because there was no way to secure them. And apparently when Blackie leaned against one of the sides, it triggered the spring system and it just all came down on top of him.  Of course the zippered door ended up underneath him, so I had to roll him around inside of that thing until I could get to the zipper to open the door and let him out. You can imagine how he bolted out of there like a cat out of....well, you know what I mean. The poor kitty was so scared. Thankfully he allowed me to pick him back up and comfort him, but he was one frightened kitty.

So, thankfully I still have my receipt and the tent is not damaged (and no, he did not "dirty it up" one bit, which is miraculous under the circumstances!), but I can't get it back into that box, so I will take it back to Walmart as is and let THEM figure it out.  Word to the wise, don't go buying one of those things, okay?

I fed him his breakfast and let him go outside for a while to do whatever cats do, (and I did actually set up a litter box for him, but he wasn't interested in that and wanted to go out) but then I brought him back inside and just held him for long time. He was purring so loudly.

And yes, I do have other clothes besides that red flannel shirt, but that is what I grab to put on when I am chilled and I don't want Blackie to snag or get hairs or fleas on something good. Thankfully I think the flea treatment has helped him, but still, I'm not taking too many chances.

Oh, hubby wanted me to take a picture of him wearing his "Blackie" suit...a nice fleecy blanket that is black on one side and has a design on the other, but he was a bit jealous of all the attention Blackie was getting so he thought he'd try to look like Blackie. LOL.  Yes, we are a little crazy here, especially so early in the morning and after not having much sleep...

Not sure what we will do about Blackie tonight.  It's not going to be quite as cold, but I'm out of other options for tonight, so he will probably just have to stay on the porch in his nice cozy chair.  It really is warm with that warming mat underneath him.  We'll see what develops.

On another note, yesterday I did have the dental appointment for the rest of the deep cleaning and then the root canal and temporary crown. I was there for three hours. Thankfully things went pretty smoothly and I was impressed with the skill of not only the young dentist, but his dental assistant, and all of the very modern technology they have now to do their work.  It really was almost completely "pain free", and I didn't have any really bad after effects after the numbness wore off. I am very THANKFUL! I still have to go back in a couple of weeks for the permanent crown, but that shouldn't be all that big of a deal.

So, thank you all for your kind words the past few days regarding all of these things before they happened.

Here's some words of hope and encouragment for today:

Matthew 21:21-22 NKJV

21 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done. 22 And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

Matthew 19:26 NKJV

26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them,
“With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

What things do YOU need to believe that God can do for you today?  ...All things are possible with God!

  2. yay for the dental work done and a new tooth on the way... so happy that is over and wow, what a Blackie story. Still laughing at the OTHER Blackie in his jealous blanket.. one with a warming blanket and one with a jealous blanket. love it love it.
poor sweet cat trapped under the silly thing. what were they thinking.. good thing its walmart, they take anything at all back. I think he will be ok in that chair,.
you could build a shed, with a cat door and have a small heater inside, you know like a dog house but with heat and blankets and small cat door to keep critters of the night from getting in there, OR buy a new stove or fridge and keep the box and cut a small door in it with a drop cloth that falls down to cover the door. OR ........................

  3. Glad the saga wasn't too bad and that Blackie seems to trust you.
Happy to hear that the dental work turned out so well too.
Praise the Lord for answered prayers.

  4. That's funny about the other Blackie, in your life being jealous. I feel bad for Blackie Jr's harrowing experience being swallowed up by that mean contraption but cats do tend to get into predicaments, so I'm sure he's not that traumatized - probably even milki g it for some extra love from you.
Glad your dental work was painless.
It doesn't sound that cold to me, especially since it goes down at night and is not a daytime temp. I'm sure it will warm up soon for you all, there. Just a little bit more. The media weather loves to hype people up.

  5. Poor kitty- Too bad about the enclosure fiasco. Glad you can get your money back. How about an insulated cooler turned on its side with the top on the bottom so he can walk in and it won't close on him....a blanket inside and he stays warm inside...it 'might' work. Love that the other 'Blackie' wants his picture taken! lol. xo Diana

  6. Poor Blackie, what an adventure he had! I'm glad that he let you hold him for a while afterward. And good thing you kept the receipt. I hope you find a solution for him soon.

  8. I'm so glad to hear that dreaded dental appointment wasn't so awful. You were on my mind (and heart).
That's so crazy about Blackie's tent collapsing around him! I know nothing about cats, but had presumed he would have begun yeowling from fright at the top of his little lungs. Can you even imagine being in that sort of predicament ... if it were me, there'd definitely have been a mess. (LOL) It was 24* when I had the girls out at 6 this morning, but "Elsa" is supposedly taking a break for the next few nights. We'll see!

  9. I'm glad that your dental appointment went well and pretty pain free. Thanking God for that for you. But poor Blackie. He was probably terrified. We had one of those pens for Zoey and Lizzie when they were puppies. It was great for camping with them. We could put them inside the tent when we were outside and know exactly where they were. But it was pretty cheaply made and fell apart before too many trips. Blackie would probably love to sleep in YOUR bed with you. Nice and cozy warm. Ha! He does look very happy on your lap though. I laughed at your Hubby. Blackie must be taking too much of your thoughts and time. He's not getting enough attention. :-)
I think Blackie will be fine on his heated blanket. He seems like such a sweetheart and counts on you to be his buddy since Sunshine is gone. You're a good person Pam.
    Blessings and love,
    Betsy

  10. Oh, that is quite a frost on the car and I wouldn't be venturing out in it either unless I had to. Poor Blackie, what a fright he must have got. I doubt whether he would go near another 'contraption' again for a while. I hope you get him sorted soon. John looks very hard done by in his Blackie blanket, poor man :)
I'm pleased your dental appointment went well but three hours sounds like a long time to be in a dental chair to me.

  11. Wow, Pamela, that is truly cold for Florida! The frost on your car tells the tale. I'm sorry that the tent contraption didn't work out for poor Blackie, but if he can stay warm enough outdoors, that's probably the best solution. This cold won't last for long. Happy to hear that your dental appointment went smoothly, too. I've had several crowns over the years, and getting the permanent one on is a breeze. Have a beautiful weekend and stay warm!

  12. Yes, it's cold and a heavy freeze, two days in a row. Wishing you a lovely day, my friend.

  13. Oh dear, poor Blackie!! You might as well return the tent because the odds are slim to none he'll ever get in it again!! Glad he is okay, I would think the best thing for him is lots of covers to snuggle up in and he should be warm through the night. I wonder if they make heating pads for animals? Good to hear your dental appt. went well and now it's over and done with. Have a blessed day.

  14. Blackie is blessed with the thoughtful care you give to him. He will probably do just fine outside tonight with that warming mat underneath him, and positioned where any breeze or wind is least likely to reach him. He's been an outdoor cat all of his life (presumably), so we can hope he will do fine.

  15. You're so very kind to be concerned about the kittie. Too bad the tent didn't work for Blackie. I made a pet kennel out of a large clear plastic storage box. I cut a big hole in the front then lined the hole with cushion so the dog won't get cut on it. Then I put an old pillow inside. They love it. It can't be locked but I think with a little effort I could make a swinging 'gate' for it so it could be, if so desired. It's really cheap and easy to do. Another idea is what Visits With Mary said: get a heating pad and put it out there. Just put it on a low setting. I would put it in a box so there would be sides to protect from the wind and add rags for extra warmth.
Hope one of those ideas make it easier for you so y'all can get some sleep. ❤️

  16. I am catching up, but was happy to see you, John, Benton, and sweet Blackie today! Thank you for the delicious lunch and for sharing Blackie with me. He is the sweetest boy!! That "tent" should have been a good option but he hit the wrong spot at the wrong time. Bless him!! Thanks again for your hospitality!! Love you guys!

  17. Oh, what an experience for Blackie and that tent! lol

  18. Ah poor Blackie. You were only looking out for him, but that tent thing was a bad thing. you going to take it back. We have one like it made by Colemen, and that never happened with two dogs inside. I am glad your dental work went well! Happy Sunday.

  19. Poor little Blackie.... You are such a precious keeper for him while he is having to learn new things. I can just see your face as you approached the tent and saw that it had collapsed. I sure hope the cold weather doesn't last long in your area so that you don't have to worry about Blackie sleeping in his usual spot. Your husband looks very handsome in his Blackie outfit... Y'all. enjoy this beautiful Cold Sunday
