Monday Monday and the Tuesday 4~What Do You Call It?

Here it is the Monday after the 4th of July...the 250th Anniversary of our nation...and I am sure many people are still trying to get back to "normal" from the holiday weekend.

This was the sunset on July 4th.  It will have to suffice for my photo challenge picture for July 5th of grass. You can see the green grass where the pond is supposed to be. LOL.

The challenge for today is "white".  These pictures below will have to be the "white" photos...even though you will also see a Black Cat in the pictures, namely, "King Blackie".  This morning he decided to lay on my computer keyboard, which caused my computer to start doing some strange things...

And pretty soon I saw this message appear on my screen from Google...

It says, "How can we help you?"  I wanted to type on the search bar, "How do you keep a cat from laying on your keyboard?"  The little rascal just wanted to play and wouldn't let me pick him up and remove him, so I had to move away from the desk and finally he decided it wasn't any fun anymore to be there so he moved. What a stinker he can be!! LOL.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend...I've seen a few posts already and am trying to get around to visit. Our weekend was actually rather quiet.  We did end up on Saturday night with our "kids" here for some home made pizza. I added an update to my Saturday post HERE to show some pictures of that. Rose brought all the ingredients and we had a good time making the pizzas. I had also baked a strawberry cake for dessert.  We didn't end up going to see the fireworks, however, as hubby and I were both pretty tired and decided to just go to bed and listened to the booms all around us. LOL.

Sunday morning I woke up with a headache and some tummy issues, and decided not to go to church and actually went back to bed for an extra morning nap. However, we knew our son Scott was coming down to do his laundry and stay for lunch, and also Benton was coming over after church because Rose had to go to work. I had some country style ribs that I put in the crock pot early in the morning when I first woke up at 5:30 a.m. to feed the cat...(Yes, much like having a new baby...no matter how bad you feel, you still gotta get up and feed them!) and I made some scalloped potatoes (the boxed kind, which are pretty good), some canned green beans and a tossed salad, oh and some deviled eggs. (I had already boiled the eggs on Saturday). So we ended up with a nice lunch, and by then I was feeling a bit better. I didn't take any new pictures, however, which is too bad because it all looked so good! But we had a nice visit with the boys and I sent them home with some "doggy bags" of leftovers.

So that's about it for us for the weekend. Now, let's move on to the Tuesday 4, shall we?

What Do You Call It?

Welcome to Tuesday 4 which was started by our friend Toni Taddeo and kept up in memory of her.   (Thanks to our friend Annie, who is the hostess with the mostest!)

Different sections of the USA have different words and customs they use. Let's talk about them.

1. In New Jersey you put your groceries in a paper bag or plastic bag. In Athens, Ohio where I went to university, you put them in a paper sack. Is it bag , sack or something else where you live?
Here in Florida we put our groceries in a plastic bag, although in some places they still ask you if you want "paper or plastic?"  I prefer plastic because it doesn't tear so easily and cold or wet things don't soak through. I reuse the plastic bags for trash bags in my bathrooms and also to bag up some other items before I put them in the larger garbage bag for the trash. They are also used for many other things as needed. I do not waste them!

2. Though no one seems to wear them anymore, NJ says Stockings.
Athens, Ohio used to call them "hose" and in Britain they are tights.
What about where you live?

Although they are getting harder and harder to find to purchase, I still like to wear panty hose with dresses for church or other dress up occasions.  I prefer control top panty hose. So I basically call them panty hose, but I also may say "I need to put my stockings on first" when I am getting dressed up.  I also wear knee highs with slacks, mainly because they feel better with my shoes and they just look better than bare ankles. My mother was a stickler for proper dress, including wearing "stockings", and when I am tempted about going hose-less with a Sunday dress, I can hear my mother's voice inside my head telling me to always dress like a lady. LOL.  However, if it is a casual summer dress and I have sandals to wear with it, I will go without hose.

3.Soda, Pop, Coke?
Here in the south most all soft drinks are called "Coke", regardless of what flavor you really want.  We'd say after school, "Let's go to the drug store and get a coke!"  But in reality, we would get a Root Beer, or a Pepsi, or an Orange or Grape Nehi drink, or a Coke, depending upon what brand they carried. Our small town drug store also made things like a Vanilla Coke or a Cherry Coke if you wanted it.  (And they only cost 5 cents back in the day when I was a teenager. That tells you how old I am).   Oh, and that "very accurate map of what America calls a cola" is not necessarily true for Florida.  I rarely ever hear anyone say "soda" here. However,  because Florida is such a melting pot of people from all over the country, a lot of our southern idioms are getting changed. There are very few true southerners or Florida natives here anymore, except maybe in the real rural parts of the state.

Hero, sub, grinder, hoagie?  Usually they are called a Sub around these parts, but there is a place not far from us that is called the "Hometown Heros Sub Shop".  We haven't been there yet, but I hear it's good.

4. Shopping cart or trolley. buggy? What do you call it?  To me it's usually a buggy, but sometimes I do say cart.

So I guess that's it for now.  I  hope you are having a wonderful week.  It's mighty hot here in our part of the country, but I hear it's hot just about every where. So please stay cool and hydrated and out of "harm's way" as much as possible.  God bless you all, and God bless America! "The Land of the free, and the Home of the Brave!"  Praise God!

  1. That King Blackie is such a hoot ... he sure keeps you hopping.
    Love all the questions today.
Now plastic bags have been banned from stores CA. loves its banning. So we bring our own bags.
I haven't worn "hose" in years. I don't even think I have a spare pair in my drawer.
I guess I call everything Coke or soda. Really don't drink it any more. I sure feel better for quitting the sugary stuff.
    Sub and shopping cart.
Hope you are feeling completely better now.

    1. I don't drink "coke" or other sodas anymore either, except an occasional Root Beer FLoat, or a Ginger Ale. I can't stand the caffeine or the sugar, and will not drink a diet drink if my life depended on it. LOL. I mostly drink unsweet iced tea with lemon when I have them. And thank you, yes I am feeling better now. Praise God.

  2. My 4th was pretty low-key too, but Friday was fun, meeting Joyce. I need to do the Tuesday 4 later so it posts in the morning. Nice that you had both of your boys there (or should I include Kind Blackie, too?!) for the 4th. Glad your tummy issues went away!! Have a happy week ahead, Pam!! xo

  3. A paper bag was a " poke". Sub sandwich 🥪 or Dagwood. A Co-Cola or a " coke " which was anything from a coke to a Pepsi to grape! 😆. Buggy. Always feel naked with bare legs in church--- miss stockings/pantyhose. We just didn't go go bare legged back in the day! It just wasn't DONE. Ha ha 😆. And we WORE SLIPS!!!--- young women today don't wear slips!! I still, wear slips, do you??

    1. Yes, I used to always wear a slip, and still have them, but I rarely wear them now. Most of my dresses aren't very 'see thru" and my slips aren't the right length or size anymore. However, if I have something that you might be able to see through, then I will definitely wear a slip. Do they even sell slips anymore??? I guess I haven't been looking for them. LOL.

  5. Hello! I love the photos for the challenge. Thanks for sharing.
I am sorry your tummy was not well the first thing Sunday morning but I am glad you began to feel better and could enjoy your boys for lunch.
I love the questions today and your answers. I will answer some here for fun if that is okay.
    1. I use the word sack and bag interchangeably. In Mississippi, we use plastic. I haven't seen paper in years.
    2. I say pantyhose for "light hosiery" and tights for thick "tights" as there is a difference and it says it on the packaging.
    3. I said coke growing up but when I moved to Illinois at 20 and lived there 15 years I picked up the saying soda. I say soda now. I know the map says that Illinois says pop but that isn't correct for all of Illinois. Southern Illinois says soda and mid to north (Chicago area) says pop.
As far as the sandwiches all those things are different types of sandwiches so I call them as they are. I usually say sub mostly though. If you are in the deep south then it may be called a po'boy.
    4. Hands down BUGGY! LOL! That I never grew out of. I got picked on so much in Illinois for calling it that.

    1. They said "pop" in Pennsylvania where I was born, but we moved to FL. when I was 5, so I grew up saying coke. My Pennsylvania relatives still say pop (I think). I've had a "po'boy" somewhere in Georgia. It was basically the same thing as a sub sandwich, and it wasn't any cheaper just because it was a "po-boy". LOL.

  6. It's interesting hearing the lingo around different parts of the continent. I hope you feel better soon and that Blackie will let you work at the computer. Cats love to try and get your attention especially when you're at the computer!

    1. Blackie has become a bit of a challenger to my work time here on the computer in the mornings. That keeps me from having as much time to visit as I'd like in Blogland. I have to try and do it when he's outside or else I can't get anything done. LOL.

  7. Oh, that Blackie! Cracks me up!
I still like to wear pantyhose when dressing 'up' ... it just makes me feel more 'finished' if that makes sense. (Also, my thighs don't sweat. TMI?)
There's nothing better than homemade pizza!

    1. Yeah, I thankfully only have to wear the hose for an hour or so to church on Sunday morning, so that's not too bad, and thankfully our church is air conditioned. The control top panty hose help to hold me all together. LOL. And yes, the pizza was delicious. My tummy just wasn't so happy the next day, but I got over it. LOL.

  8. Blackie does have a mind of his own and maybe he will learn how to use the computer one day! I hope that you are feeling better, Pam. Your impromptu dinner with your sons sounded really delicious. We stayed home on the 4th and did ribs in the crockpot served with a broccoli salad. Homemade pizza is the bets but we don[t make it in the summer months and enjoy it elsewhere instead.

    1. I normally try not to do much baking in the oven in the summer months either, but I couldn't pass up a homemade pizza...plus I'd already baked a cake earlier. I have a gas stove/oven, and it seems to throw off a lot of heat, so I do try to limit my baking on these really hot days. Blackie only uses the computer to get my attention and he seems to think its great fun to step on it and lay on it and use his sharp little claws to keep me from getting to it. He thinks it's a game. So when he's in here in the mornings it's hard for me to get much done until he gets bored and goes somewhere else. LOL. Fun Fun Fun.

  9. In Georgia, a soda was always a Coke, Pamela. It bordered on blaspheme to say anything else! The Candlers, who bought the rights to Coca-cola, gave huge donations to Emory University (where my father taught), and later, Robert Woodruff did the same. Emory would have never been what it is today without the Coca-cola legacy. And must we now start calling him "King Blackie"? LOL! He is the cat's meow, for sure!

    1. I know what you mean about Coke in Georgia. My brother in law worked for them for many years...and I find it funny when we go out to eat with him that he always asks for Coke, and they ask him if Pepsi is okay, and he has to say okay...I know it hurts him to do so. LOL. As far as Blackie is concerned, he definitely thinks he's the king around here, so I do call him that when he is being espeically imperious. LOL.

  10. Vanilla coke, cherry coke, lemon coke were very popular at soda fountains. I remember them so well. I think the computer knows that Blackie runs the show over there. I posted a reel of my golden man Garfield. He's been gone over the rainbow bridge for a while now, but I sure miss my little pal. He would lay at my spine and purr and I found out later that it creates healing in bone and the brace I wore that sent waves through my spine to help the new bone grow was based on a cat's purring! The brace was computerized and cost $5000 Iinsurnace paid) but the cat did it for free! They seem to know what we need.

    1. I will have to look for your reel about Garfield. And I love the story about him and your spine. I can well imagine how good that felt to have that warmth up against your back. I wore one of those bone growth stimulators for a while also after my back surgery. Not sure if it worked or not, but my back is fine now, so perhaps it did. I know, I saw the bill for it because my insurance was refusing to pay for it, so I tried to take it back to my back surgeon, but they told me to keep it at no charge. I didn't have a cat back then.

  11. Pop here, lol. I remember that talk about wearing panty hose too, and well, frankly, its way too hot for all that nonsense, lol. Wishing you a lovely day and I am glad you are feeling better.

    1. Trust me, if I had to wear pantyhose every day to work, I would not like that. Thankfully when I worked I didn't have to wear dresses. I only wear them on Sunday morning for an hour, so that's not too bad. LOL.

  12. Well, isn't he cute! lol We did have to get used to some of the odd to us names for things like all soda is called Coke, shopping carts are called buggies and everyone says Ma'am or Sir. Since we wanted this to be our permanent home-we follow the example of the locals and try to use their terms!

    1. Well, "Y'all are doing the right thing!" "Honey, when in Rome, do as the Romans do...or when in the south, better speak the language..." LOL. Especially those "Ma'ams and Sirs". We moved here from PA when I was a child, and I was taught right away about Yes Ma'am, and Yes Sir, etc. My southern friends' parents made sure I spoke correctly to them, even if my own parents did not speak that way. LOL.

  13. King Blackie makes me laugh, I think he is a little spoiled, which is okay. How can you not spoil a loved pet. On the Tuesday 4, our answers were close, and it's panty hose for me, yes, I still wear them or knees highs. I don't like putting my naked feet into shoes. Good to see you joining Photo-a-day, your 'white' was great, I think King Blackie approved. lol Hope you're feeling better!

  14. Hi Pamela, your Sunday lunch sounds really good. It took me a while to get used to not wearing stockings. I used to say nylons, but I guess that came out of the era of wearing them with a garter belt! I don't see anyone out here wearing stocking anywhere. I should check the stores to see if they still carry them. They used to have such a wide selection. Enjoy the rest of your week!
