Tuesday 4~ December Smiles

 December Smiles

Welcome, welcome to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 where we sometimes like to be very silly. December is a fun month filled with expectation and hope. We should be light hearted and thankful as the month progresses. What do you think?

Let's be light hearted today and ask some not so serious questions shall we?

1. What is the dumbest rule you've ever had to follow?
You have to drink all your milk before you can go out to the playground. I never liked milk, and especially way back then it came in little tiny glass bottles (yes, I'm THAT OLD!) and it would get warm quickly. There was another 4th grade teacher on lunchroom duty that day (not my favorite 4th grade teacher), and she said I could not leave the lunch table until I drank every drop of that warm souring milk. I cried, I gagged, I begged and pleaded not to have to drink that milk. I was humiliated and horrified in front of everyone else in the lunchroom. But she was adamant, and I was literally sick to my stomach. I'm not sure how I ever got to leave the lunchroom that day, but when I got back to my classroom with my own favorite 4th grade teacher, that dear lady called me up to her desk and told me very kindly that she had heard what happened to me in the lunchroom, and she said to me, "That will never happen to you again, I promise." Oh, how I loved that dear teacher! Sadly she moved away mid-semester, but thankfully God provided a new teacher in her place who was just as kind and who actually liked me and gave me special assignments, like drawing the horses on our class mural we were doing about the pioneers moving westward.  She saw that I had a special talent for drawing horses (oh, where has that gone? I don't know!), and she restored my sense of self-esteem. I will always have a warm place in my heart for her and the former teacher, but NEVER for that other teacher in the lunchroom, who thankfully was never my teacher!!!! (I suppose I should forgive her. She never had children of her own, and she really didn't understand freckled faced red headed little girls who disliked milk so much. Okay, Lord, I forgive her, but I'll never forget that day!)

2. What is the weirdest or funniest thing a guest ever did/said in your home?
I will have to think about that one for a while and come back to this...we've had a lot of funny, weird guests in our lifetime. Being in the ministry, we used to do a LOT of entertaining, and we played a lot of silly games with our guests at our annual Christmas parties. Things could get pretty funny and we would all be splitting our sides with laughter, but I honestly can't think of any one particular thing that any one person said or did. But they all loved the parties and couldn't wait for the next year.

3. If you had a warning label what would it say?
Watch out! I was born a redhead, and under this faded mop I am STILL a redhead, so beware!!What they say about redheads having a temper just might be true...and you don't wan't to poke the bear to find out! LOL.

4. What is the first thing you must do in case of a Snoopy/Charlie Brown Apocalypse? Who is the first person you call for advice when that happens? (Imagine that The characters of Charlie Brown series take over the world! What do you do as your first move? Who would you call for advice on how to live in that world?)
Well, I'd call Lucy, of course.  Wasn't she the one alway giving out advice?  But maybe Snoopy would be the best choice. He seems to have the best life in the series. LOL.

This was fun. Thank you, Annie, for bringing us together each week.  Click HERE to join in the fun

On a different note, I am home sort of in quarantine, but not really. I don't have Covid, but I do have Walking Pneumonia!  I went to the Dr. yesterday because I was experiencing a deep pain in my chest/lungs when I'd cough, which wasn't really often, but often enough to know something was wrong, plus the fact that I was so exhausted and had been sick over the weekend with some chills and general worn out from last week's festivities (or so I thought).  Anyway, this is the 2nd time I've had walking pneumonia in the past 4 months.  He put me on some strong antibiotics, a steroid, and cough medicine and told me to stay home and rest and stay away from people for a while because it is contagious! So here I am, thankfully you can't get my germs through the computer!  Frankly, I'm thankful to be told to stay home and rest...but then again, I've got so much to do getting ready for Christmas...but one day at a time. God knows what I need, and I will try to listen this time.

I did buy one special Christmas gift...for Blackie! What you see here is a pet warming mat, that warms itself as the cat's body heat reflects back to him. No electricity...just insulation... My niece Debbie told me about this when she was here on Thanksgiving, so I ordered one on Amazon, and it arrived already. I put it in Blackie's favorite chair on the porch and waited to see what would happen...

It has become his favorite place to sit and sleep!  Hooray!! This was in the daytime...

and this was at night (hence the reflections on the glass door)

After our sad loss of Sunshine last week, Blackie has been lonely and rather clingy, and well, frankly, so have I.  So I was happy to find something special for him that he seems to be very pleased with!!! And it really works! I sat this mat on my lap for a few minutes, and it was very warm indeed! What a great idea!

However yesterday morning he was busily watching the action out on Still Waters Pond.  There were two dogs over on the shore to the left, looking for water. They live in the neighborhood and keep breaking loose from their fenced pen, and they love to come to the pond and play in the mud over there, because there really isn't much water (however we are supposed to get some rain today and later this week, praise God!)   Anyway, the Sand Hill Cranes were out there, and they did not like those dogs in their territory!  So I watched the drama as they marched across the pond to shoo the dogs away...
Blackie also was watching, but he soon took off for parts unknown, because he was afraid those dogs were going to come around here and come up on the porch. He disappeared for the better part of the day until supper time.

Meanwhile, the Cranes started flappping their wings and hollering in their loud raucus calls at those dogs...

And soon the dogs took off and apparently headed back home...

But the Cranes kept up their tirade and dance until they were sure they were good and gone. I wish you could've heard them...

Here's a brief little video of them jumping, but you can't really hear them because I was inside and the tv is going on in the background. But it's still fun to see them jumping about. I think they are also starting their annual mating rituals, and hopefully they will still build a nest on Still Waters (dry) pond as usual.

Okay, I have to go. Thank you for being here friends... Oh, and here's the words of wisdom from God's Word for today...I guess I needed to be reminded of this today...

Colossians 3:12-13 NKJV

12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

Amen!

  1. Good scriptural reminder! My oldest son built a cat box for strays in his backyard and put one of those pads inside. The cats love it. Keeps them nice and warm.

  2. I loved the story of the special teachers. It shows how people can really make an impact of your life.
I have 2 kids that are redheads, although our son is really more of a strawberry blonde. When our daughter was born, the nurses in the nursery said - this one is showing her red hair. She was showing a bit of temper already!
The warming mat is a great idea!

  3. Oh do take care and I hope those antibiotics kick in and heal you. After my fall twist with pneumonia, I have decided that is no fun and the cough hanging on just completely wears one out.
If I had to drink milk before going to the playground I would have never seen the playground again. I hate milk. I did have to drink chocolate milk until 4th grade when I came across a used thermos. I treated that thermos like it was gold because you know they broke in those days. I still don’t like chocolate milk either from having to drink it back then. I will usually have a few hot chocolates a year around Christmas, but not cold chocolate milk. You would think since my grandmother worked in the school cafeteria I would have gotten a pass on all of that, but nope… no one, including your grandmother coddled us back then:)
    I love little Blackie’s mat.

    1. You and I sound alike in our milk dislike. I hated it and still do too. My mother used to make me drink it, and I would have to drink it all down before the red hand got all the way around on the clock on the wall. At least our milk was cold, and that helped, but I still hated it. The only milk I drink now is a cup of hot Ovaltine. I like it better than regular chocolate because I can't tolerate the chocolate either. Yes, I did drink chocolate milk as a child, mostly Nestle's quik or Hershey's syrup, but even that took some work. LOL on the Grandmother not coddling you! I can understand that. One of my friend's grandmother ran our cafeteria, and she was a tough one for sure, but the food sure was good back then. They cooked real hot food and made the best homemade yeast rolls! Those were the days! All for 25 cents! LOL.

  4. Well if you can't get out and are having to stay in and rest . . . at least you had a front row seat to all the action of Still Water Pond!!! What a great gift for Blackie, a non electric heating pad, that has to feel so good to him.

  5. What a great post! Do mind the dr's advice and rest--don't fool around when you have pneumonia! That's a perfect gift for Blackie!

  6. If I had a shirt, it would say, Don't Poke the Bear. Bob says that a lot now. he said I was laying still and not moving because I did not want to poke the bear, that was when I said wow, you didn't wake me up today. I don't have red hair, my grandmother did, but she had no temper, so maybe she got the red and passed the temper to daddy and he passed it to me. I am my daddy, as in same peas one pod... all the things I did not like about him I now have myself.
I actually teared up reading about the new warm pad for Blackie and feeling sorry for you and him missing Sunshine. Sorry you are ill and good idea to stay home like the doctor says.. I got a pneumonia shot this year because when Doctor asked if I got one, she said at your age you NEED to get that shot. she explained that this is not the one that you get from being sick, but a contagious one that is dangerous for seniors.
I did not know there IS a contagious pneumonia

    1. I had a pneumonia shot a few years ago. I don't think you have to have them every year, but maybe I need another one for sure. I love the story about "don't poke the bear" with you and Bob. I love to hear a little bit of humor from there. I really don't have a BAD temper, but just don't get me riled up...I think it's still there somewhere if pushed hard enough. My Daddy was also a redhead, and I take after him. But he was much milder than my mother, who was a green eyed brunette, and very pretty, but she had the temper and I knew better than to sass her! LOL. I knew you'd like the warming pad story. I feel like a better cat-mother now that I did that for him. I was feeling pretty poorly about poor Sunshine and me not realizing he was actually dying until it was too late. yes, I miss him a lot. Okay, bye for now. I have to go read more posts.

  7. I'm so sorry to hear that you are truly under the weather, Pamela. Walking pneumonia is nothing to take chances with. Sure, Christmas is coming with its pressures and demands, but simply ignore them and relax in the season. Love the pad you got for Blackie. Blessings!

  8. What a great idea, that warming mat!
I'm so sorry to hear about the pneumonia rearing its ugly head once again, but it sounds like your MD is all over it (PTL). I had the shot several years ago (can't recall how long), but probably need to ask my primary if I need another.
I was never really 'into' Peanuts, so don't know much about them --- but would probably choose Lucy as well. She seems like just the type who'd tell me to put on my big girl britches and grow a spine!

  9. I'm so, so sorry to hear that you're sick again with pneumonia. It's a forced rest for you and gives you more time with your favorite pass time of watching the zoo in your own backyard. That warming mat seems to be perfect for Blackie. I can imagine how much he's missing Sunshine. When we had Annie, (dog) and George, (cat) in Spokane they were puppy and kitten and raised together. They loved each other so much. Annie died when she was 14 and George the cat would yowl all night long. I finally took him to the vet and he said we should get him another dog! He was grieving for Annie so much it was pitiful. Anyone who doesn't think animals have emotions is kidding themselves. God gave even the animals the capacity to love and care for each other.
I'll be praying for you my dear friend and will hope for a quick healing and the antibiotics to knock that pneumonia away permanently.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  11. That was a cute Tuesday 4. I sure hope you feel better soon, Pam. I was hospitalized with walking pneumonia last year. I'm so sorry you got it again. Of course, being from Florida, I've seen and heard those cranes do their thing. They actually wouldn't let me back out of my driveway one time; they were trying to scare off my little car, lol!

  12. Interesting answer to #1 and I'm glad your teacher took care of that issue with the milk. How nice that you had a great time with your ministry. Cute answer for #3. Lucy was a good answer for #4.

  13. I knew we were sisters under the skin. I hate milk too. Never liked it. still don't. Having to drink that warm milk would make me gag too.
My red hair rears its head at times too. It doesn't usually burst out but smolders.
Great questions but I can't think of answers to some of them.
Get well soon and take it easy. Mind the doctor and rest. What gets done ... gets done and don't fret the small stuff.
Going to the post office soon to send the package and then to WalMart. Not looking forward to that store but I really have to get some things for dinner and our annual Christmas party with Daughter in Laws side of the family. That's always good for more blog fodder.
    (((hugs)))

  14. Gosh, I am so sorry that you are so sick, Pam!! Yes to following doctor's orders and take care of yourself! Blackie looks like he loves his warming pillow! Nice! I love that the cranes keep returning to your pond and I am sure there will be eggs in the nest soon! Sending love and a hug, and prayers are being lifted!! xo

  15. I trained as a teacher many years ago but never actually worked as one. I did do many practicums though in several different grades. It astounded me how little time it takes with care and attention to change young lives for the better so it saddened me to hear how that one teacher was mean to you. Thank God there were others who were much better. I'm so glad Blackie has a warming mat. The cats love to be near (or in this case on) the heat so much. xx

  16. Can't say I am a big milk fan either. Blackie probably loves his warming mat. Glad you have him!

  17. Hi Pamela, I am sorry you are sick and it is important for you to rest. I am sorry you lost Sunshine. I sure hope you get some rain for your pond. Take care of yourself!

  18. Oh dear!! Get better soon! Get the rest, and first get better before doing all sorts of things for christmas. I remember a couple of years ago when I had pneumonia. Of course had no opportunity for proper rest...so...5 times pneumonia was the result. So please...give others a task so they can have the pleasure of doing things this year.

The answer on 1 was a good one. Not the experience, but I didn't think of those days of forcing kids to eat and drink what they deeply disliked. I needed to eat certain porridge. In the children's home they had the kids sit all day without any other food, until the plate was empty. So I just stuffed it inside... and felt sick all day, until I caught something serious... scarlet fever and was put in isolation. Because I was so seriously ill my aunt was allowed to visit. I told her about the porridge, and she was able to stop it.
    I still hate it.
