Thursday Thankfulness from the Back Porch

Good Morning from the back porch!  Sunshine and Blackie are "greeting" you, but after looking at their eyes and posture, it's more like they are "glaring" at us!  I'm thinking they are saying, "How dare you make us stay out here where it's so cold while you are inside where it is so nice and warm!" (this picture was taken yesterday).   However, seriously, they have been doing fine and they seem to have taken advantage of the warm places that we prepared for them on the porch for the past couple of very cold days, and now today it is already 47 degrees and heading back up to 75 this afternoon, so they are just fine.

So, just after I wrote that paragraph with that picture above, I got up to go to the bathroom. When I stepped into my bathroom I was literally shocked to see Blackie in there, snooping around quietly and acting like nothing was unusual about him being there...and I am like, "Blackie! How did you get in here???"  He kind of turned around and smiled at me as if to say, "Ha Ha! I fooled  you!! I got in when you weren't looking and I've been in here for 10 minutes and you didn't even know it!"  The only thing I can figure out is that when I stepped out on the front porch to put out the flag, he must've been right there by the front door and slipped in when I wasn't looking because I was focused on putting out the flag and looking at the sunrise!  It certainly was a shock to me, because he's rarely ever on the front porch in the morning. He is such a little scamp!

So here we go, I am herding him back toward the back door... (he sees those doggy beds under the coffee table, which belong to our grandpuppies when they come to visit, and I think he was kind of smirking at them, as if to say, "just you wait...I'll be in here in those beds one of these days!") LOL.

Sunshine was right there at the back door as if to say, "Hey! How did you get in there without me?" Meanwhile Blackie headed to the edge of the porch to look out at the birds and pretend nothing was any different. Mister Innocent. LOL.

And once again they sat down and got back to their normal places...

But Blackie looked back and gave me one last glance as if to say, "I almost fooled you this time! You better watch out, because I know all the tricks, and one of these days you won't be able to get me back out that door!"    Yeah, I'm thinking this blog is becoming a saga of whose will is going to break first...mine or the cats, (or my hubby...who is the real stern one behind the mandate of no cats in the house...and yet he goes out to give them treats when they really don't need them, and I hear him talking baby talk to them when he doesn't think I'm listening...)
Stay tuned.  I wonder how many of you are placing bets on how soon those cats will be living in our house? LOL.

Meanwhile, life is calm and peaceful out on the still very dry Still Waters Pond. This was the scene this morning, with Mr. and Mrs. Sand Hill Crane literally walking on the dry pond over to the shore, which really isn't a shore anymore...it's all dry land these days. That black bird you see behind them is that male Muscovy Duck...who is still hanging around and trying to sneak up on the porch when we aren't looking... Did I say life was 'calm and peaceful'?  LOL.

Yesterday morning hubby had a follow up Doctor visit to go over his labs from last week...and Praise the Lord! They were all really good, and he had a very good visit with the doctor. Things are looking much better than they were earlier this year, and we are VERY thankful.    So we BOTH had good doctor reports this week!!

From there we stopped at the hospital so I could visit our neighbor, who has been in there for about a week. This is the same neighbor who used to feed our kitties before I took over. She has had a lot of health issues over the past year, and has been in and out of the hospital several times after falling in her home.  It's really been a rough time, and her daughter works full time and lives a couple of hours away, so things have been really challenging for both of them.  I've tried to help as much as I could, but there's only so much I could do, along with other home health people her daughter has had to hire to come and check on her and help out.  Anyway, finally her daughter was able to find a rehab place for her closer to her home, and she is going to be going there for at least a month, and then we'll see what happens after that. I wanted to see her before she left today because I know I won't be able to go visit her at the rehab place 2 hours away.  I am thankful that she will be taken care of and hopefully she will get stronger...and of course her dream is to be able to come back to her home...but time will tell and I pray for what is really best for her.

After that it was lunch time, so hubby and I decided to go try out a restaurant in Palatka that has just reopened in a new location after about a year of renovation, etc.  We'd never been to that restaurant before, so we really didn't know what to expect, but we'd heard that people really loved it and they were anxiously awaiting for it to reopen. We got there around 11:15 a.m. for lunch, and there was already a line waiting!  Thankfully we got in pretty quick, and we were not disappointed in the food or the service...and the atmosphere was very "country". Of course I took pictures!

The name of the restaurant is "Bradley's", and they serve southern country style food and seafood. Oh, and steak and catfish too, on their supper menu, but we rarely go out for supper. Although I love some good catfish, and so we may have to go back for that sometime...

Here's some of the decor...one of Sunshine and Blackie's distant cousins was there: LOL.  (a.k.a. a Bobcat)

This area is known for large mouth bass fishing...and it looks like someone caught a few prize fish!

We are not far from the Ocala National Forest, so these fellas aren't far from "home".  There were a LOT of these deer mounted on all the walls of the restaurant...I was half expecting to see venison on the menu, but it wasn't...

LOL...This is what goes on at night out there on the shores of the lakes in the area...Welcome to north central Florida!

Oops...that fella didn't get away...

I thought this painting was quite interesting.    Might be a bit too remote and swampy for my liking, but this is typical of places in "old Florida"...

And here's my plate! I ordered the Chicken and Dumplings special for the day, and it came with a choice of vegies...I chose Collard Greens, and Zipper Peas, and a "Hoecake"!  I had to ask what the "hoecake" would be, and was told it was cornbread. Imagine my surprise when it came looking more like a "pancake", but it was definitely cornbread! It was all REALLY good, if you like southern country cooking!

Hubby had the Chopped Beef Steak smothered in mushrooms and gravy, rice and gravy, and green beans. He ordered the hush puppies for his bread. Normally we have those with seafood, but they were good with this too...

It was all good, and we will definitely be going back! Now I see why people were standing in line waiting!!

Well Folks, I guess this is all from the back porch today. I'm very thankful for all of these blessings and also that today has turned out to be a lovely sunshiny warm day. Oh, and I just found out that my sister and her family are going to come here for Thanksgiving, and I am very happy about that! It's been a while since they've all been here at our house for Thanksgiving (or any dinner), so it will be wonderful. Now I just have to start cleaning house and planning ahead...

Here's a good thought for today...
 John 14:27 NKJV

"Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

One more thing I am thankful for is that the government shutdown is over and hopefully things will get back to some kind of normal. Praying for all those who have been seriously impacted by this shutdown in one way or another.

Thank you all for your kind words and prayers for my daughter in law's sister's family. You all are a wonderful family of friends. I do thank God for each and every one of you.

  1. Your lunch looks very good!
I am laughing over the cat antics. Cats do have the ability to glare. :)
Blackie is so funny, sneaking into the house. I also laughed at your comments on John. Bob was the same and then guess what - after some time a cat moved into the house. And who do you think let the cat sit on him every night? Yes, it was Bob.
So, you never know what might happen. I found our cats to be really good company.

  2. The kitties definitely look a little angry in that first shot. I'm all for bringing them inside. When I had outside kitties I tried to bring them in and they would just cry at the door until I let them back out. Those lunches sure do look like some good country cooking - yum!

  3. I wish we had some southern-country type restaurants here to try. We have nicely decorated retro diners - which are fun. The only southern cooking I really want is to taste my mom’s cooking (Grandma taught her my dad’s favorites) and my Grandmas. I wonder if I’ll be able to have some if their good cooking in Heaven?

Funny narrative with the cats. I’m shocked (not really) that your husband feeds them treats and speaks baby talk to them. 😁 Time will tell. So far it’s Cats 2 Husband 1

    1. LOL. Yes, Time will tell. Re: good cooking in heaven? Well, there will be a huge banquet for the "Bride of Christ", which is the church...and among all those "churches" that will be represented are many good old southern Baptists, Pentecostals, Methodists, Presbyterians, Church of God, etc., etc., and they ALL know how to cook (and eat) good southern style food...so I can imagine there will be plenty of biscuits and gravy, grits, black eyed peas, and chicken and dumplings and anything else they like on the menu...potato salad, baked beans, fried chicken...and plenty of "Angel Food Cake" baked by the angels. LOL. Whatever is served, it will be "heavenly", and we will be singing and rejoicing around the table! What a glorious day that will be!!

  4. Yum to your lunches!! They both look really good! I love southern comfort food!! I also love your Sunshine and Blackie! They will both make good indoor/outdoor pets. Once one of them gets on John's lap and starts purring, he will be hooked!! Blackie didn't seem scared of being inside at all. Funny that you found him in the bathroom. My two follow me into the bathroom all the time! LOL Do keep us posted!! Sending a hug!

  5. Blackie is a rascal! Now that he's been inside the "compound," expect that he will do that again, Pamela. Southern comfort foods are the absolute best. Your meals looked so delicious. I'm continuing to pray that y'all get that rain you need so desperately right now. So sad to see Still Waters Pond so still. Blessings!

  6. Your cats, I love all the stories. They're such characters! That restaurant looks like it's quite the destination. Lots to see and good food too. I'm excited about your Thanksgiving with your sister! Enjoy your visit.

  7. Bradley's looks like a nice restaurant. We're thinking about going to Capt. Joe's Seafood in Waycross tonight for some grilled shrimp. I've invited some friends to come along. We don't eat out much anymore but today I just feel like getting out for awhile.
Blackie reminds me of a black Oriental Shorthair we had in the 80's called Tasha. She was always a scamp. The stories I could share about her. Very talkative too. She's the best cat we ever had.
    Blessings. 🍂

  8. Oh, that's so funny about Blackie making himself quite at HOME! I've never been owned by a feline, but suspect they're pretty wily, not unlike dogs. Perhaps one of these days you'll add their first-"person" narratives to your blog, like Lily Grace?
That restaurant you discovered looks like just the sort of place we like. There's sure something about good Southern meat-and-3 cooking that makes one long for more.

  9. I giggled through the story of Blackie in the house. He does look pretty proud of himself. And that restaurant decor is fantastic. I've never been to Florida but it does look a bit like what I imagine it. I've also never had collard greens and have no idea what zipper peas are. I love food though and I'm sure it's all delicious.
We're having Thanksgiving at Mandy & Brad's. I always make the turkey, stuffing, gravy, potatoes, cranberries, and green bean casserole. The other dishes are divided up with other people who will be coming. Always a good time, although we'll be missing our London kids this year. I hope you have a wonderful weekend my friend.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  10. I loved my daddy's hoe cake, he made the best ever, but his was with flour and now that I saw his I will have to make one if I can remember how. I love everything on both your plates and would have ordered yours and bob your hubbies. there used to be a Bradley's in Hawthorne. I don't think you are to far from there. I wish I could come and spend the with you and your family, all of you always look so happy. I might find a recipe for cornbread hoe cake because IBS likes cornmeal a lot better than white flour
I laughed my head off at the Blackie in the bathroom. wishes he had hidden and jumped on the bed in the dark. he he he and IF I had a cent left to bet with I would be betting on the CATS

    1. I wish you could come here too. Oh, you are right that Hawthorne is not far from us...about 15 miles west of us, but I don't think there's a Bradley's there anymore. This one has been in Palatka for a long time, but they lost their lease at their old location, and had to find a new place and it took a while to renovate it and pass all the inspections before they could open, so it's been almost a year! I want to go back and have some catfish! It's been a long time since I had any. And the hoecakes would be easy to make on a griddle or skillet and not have to bake in the oven. Just use your usual cornbread mix and pour it on a hot griddle to cook and there you go! It was very good! I may try that next time too. Speaking of cats, they are staring at me through the window and waiting for breakfast, so I must go...talk about being "owned"...LOL

  12. Howdy my friend. Yes, we got two of the big paintings hung up. I am laughing so hard at Blackie sneaking right on into the house....just like he owns it, ha ha LOL! I would love to have seen the look on your face to find him there wandering around. LOL. Looks like he was very used to being inside a house, it's not new to him. Loved the pictures of the new restaurant, and seeing what all y'all had to eat, it sure looked GOOD. I did know about hoe cakes, but never make them, I DO MAKE pans of cornbread ALOT, especially since cold weather is now here. Oh my---that swamp house painting---!! I would be afraid to have dogs or cats out there, afraid a gator might get them, LOL. Anyway, glad y'all got to go, and that the lab results were good as well as your recent heart tests, very good news! I'm glad Doris and hubby are coming for Thanksgiving, that will be so special! Hugs and Merry weekend!

  14. I am breathing a sigh of relief and also a prayer of gratitude to the Lord for the good medical report! I keep you and John in my prayers.

That restaurant with all the preserved animals is very Florida!!!

  16. Okay, stop everything, Blackie sneaking into the bathroom like a secret agent is literally the most iconic thing I've heard all week, that cat is a genius, and the fact that he was "smirking" at the grandpuppies' beds is just too much.

  17. Yum...both plates of food looks so good. Good ol' down home cooking. This restaurant looks like a good place to eat. As I was scrolling through the animal photos, I kept thinking, Okay, I know there has to be an alligator of some kind there. And there it was!! Blackie is a cat that might think he's human. He really is pretty smart. Sunshine and Blackie are both beautiful. We have a neighborhood cat that loves to walk our fence, and loves to walk on the pool cover. Sam nearly croaks every time he sees the cat walking across the cover.
