Thursday Thankfulness and Friday Foto Friends

Oh my dear friends! Where shall I begin?  There's been a lot going on the past few days, and I have been keeping quite busy with some different kinds of things than the usual watching the wildlife on Still Waters Pond, although I have been doing some of that as well.  Maybe I will start with that and then move on to the more involved "stuff" that may take some 'splaining', as Ricky Ricardo would say to Lucy.  So let's start with the pretty stuff first and then talk about the deeper stuff.

I can't remember if I showed you these pictures already that definitely show the two Sand Hill Crane eggs on the nest...if you've already seen these, then just move on to the next batch of pictures...but this will prove that there are definitely two baby Crane Colts on their way! Mama and Daddy are keeping close watch over the nest, taking turns doing the nesting duty. They are very responsible parents and "parents to be".

Mr. Great Blue Heron still comes to fish here on Still Waters Pond, but he keeps his distance from the Crane nest. I think he knows better than to tangle with those critters!

The Goldfinches continue to come and feed at the finch feeder. Their colors are starting to get brighter every day.

And speaking of bright colors, Mr. Bluebird is sitting on his perch here above the birdhouse, while Mrs. Bluebird is tending to her nest duties inside.
He keeps a close watch out for pesky birds who happen to get too close to their territory, and he chases them away just as quickly as they arrive...
I'm not sure just how far along the nest sitting is going for now...I've been too busy with other stuff to keep track of the days that they have actually been staying inside the nest.  I'll just be surprised someday when the babies arrive.

One morning this week we took a ride up to one of our favorite places to visit, Lake Swan Camp,  about 20 miles north of us.  We like to go and just look at the lake and take a walk around during the week when we assume there won't be much activity going on.  However, we were sure surprised to see THIS:
From a distance we couldn't tell what was going on, some kind of headless lake creatures gathering for a rather weird and creepy looking meeting?  Are they aliens getting ready to attack? LOL.  Of course, on closer inspection we realized that these were wetsuits, hanging up to dry.  We soon discovered that there was a group of people staying at the camp who were doing some scuba diving training as well as other projects, like helping to build a new porch on one of the buildings, etc.   We looked up the name of the group that we saw written on a large bus parked on the campgrounds: International ALERT Academy from Big Sandy, TX.  It is a Christian academy where they "forge extraordinary men who influence their world for Christ."  Scuba Diving and rescue, fire fighting, aviation, missions, discipleship,  construction, EMT,  and much more are all a part of this nine month course of study and training.    We had never heard of this school or program before, and it was quite interesting to learn about this.  We just stayed out of their way and didn't hang around because we didn't want to interfere with their program.  But it was fascinating!

I did manage to take one picture of the lake without involving any of their group.

So now back home and back to what else has been going on the past few days.  As many of you know, our son and daughter in law have been involved with a furniture business in one way or the other over the past several years. They owned and operated a furniture and gift store here in our town called "Dixie Cottage" for a while, but sold it last year. However, they continued to put refurbished or custom made furniture in the store for sale as vendors.  Recently they have decided to get out of that business altogether, except for their own other business ventures online on Etsy and through their own "Ben & Rose's Country Woodshop".  However, they still had some furniture in the store waiting to be sold, and they needed to get it out by the end of this month (today).  Since this particular bedroom dresser and nightstand still had not sold, I kept thinking about it and felt an urge to replace our very old dresser with one that is newer and much easier to "operate".  So let me go back in time and share more of what all of this entailed for me to consider such a proposition.

This is the "old dresser" that I've had for forty years. It has  quite a history.

Inside one of the top drawers is this information, written by my father, probably after my Mother received this dresser from her parents' estate back in the late 1960's.  The only thing I would disagree with was the date of 1905.  I was of the impression that my grandparents had this dresser when they first got married, which was in 1901.  Either way, it is well over 100 years old.

After my mother got the dresser from her parents' estate, she kept it for a while, but then my brother and his wife needed it, so they took it and kept it for a while. I believe my (then) sister in law actually refinished it. Sadly, my brother and his wife divorced, and he didn't want to keep the dresser, but since it was a family "heirloom" he brought it back home to my parents' home.  At that point there was apparently no room in the house for it, so it was put in my father's workshop/garage, where he subsequently started storing parts for his toy train collection and other various miscellaneous tools, and "stuff".

In 1984 our little family was moving to a new home/parsonage, and we needed an extra dresser. So I asked if I could have this dresser, and my parents agreed that I could have it. From that point it traveled with us through many more moves over the next 40 years.  It originally had a very large and heavy mirror, but the silver on the back of the mirror was quite old and scratch and you really couldn't see yourself very well in the mirror. Plus the frame was coming apart, and so I believe that mirror just kind of got "left behind" at one of our houses when we moved away.

One of the things that I stored in that dresser was my first real journal. I wrote about that journal HERE, for one of our "Random Journal Days" some time ago.  In this particular post I also shared more about my Grandma Tedlie, the grandma who had this dresser for so many years. You might appreciate her more when you read more about her story.

Here's an excerpt from my journal, written not long after I received this dresser:

So with all of this family history and sentimentality connected to this dresser, why would I not want it anymore you may ask? Well, it's not so much that I didn't want it, but it is starting to show its age (after 123 years you'd show your age too!).  The two big drawers are so big and heavy that they are very difficult for me to open and close without hurting myself.  And there really wasn't any other place in the house where it would fit.  So finally, after a LOT of prayer and working through guilt feelings, I made up my mind to "let it go".  I told my son that I wanted the dresser that he has for sale (I would pay for it, of course!), and I wanted this old dresser to go to a new home.  He and Rose could not take it to their house as they do not have room for it either.  So I sent out an emergency message to all of my siblings and nieces/nephews and told them that if anyone was interested in having Grandma Tedlie's 123 year old dresser to let me know asap and make arrangements to come and get it like this weekend! One by one they saw the message, and either responded with their regrets over not having space for it either, or they just didn't respond at all.  So with that final step out of the way, I told my son to come and get it and take it to our church thrift store when he delivers the "new dresser" to the house.

Last night I spent the evening cleaning out the drawers and throwing some things away, putting some things in a bag to donate, and then reorganized what was left. (Still way too much stuff!).  Then this morning he and Rose came and brought the new dresser and nightstand and took away the old to our church thrift store.  I didn't even cry, but I thought for sure that I would.  No, it took a lot of strength for me to finally "let it go", but when I did I felt so much better and am at peace with my decision.

And here is the new to me dresser:

The drawers all slide so nice and easy and it is not groaning and stiff with age like my 123 year old Grandma's dresser.  I have a feeling that Grandma is actually smiling at all of this and congratulating me on making such a difficult decision over something that really shouldn't be such a big deal.  It's really only furniture and we can't take it with us...
OH, and yes, my old journal is in the top left hand drawer, just like before.

Here are some pictures of the "old dresser" on its way out and then at its current resting place until a new owner comes along to claim it:

This is in the garage at our church Thrift Store. I am praying that God will send someone who will love it just like I did and who will treasure it and make new memories with it.

Tonight, as a way of celebrating this "event" and also thanking our kids for their help with this today, we took them out to eat at Cedar River Seafood.

Rose and I had fun figuring out the puzzles and riddles on the back of the placemat while we waited for our dinner:

Oh, here's Benton and Rose now...two very hard working and sweet kids that we greatly love and appreciate!

And here' s me and hubby, trying to take a selfie, but somehow we didn't quite get our eyes in the right places...LOL.  But we were having a good time and it felt good to get out with the kids and relax after a long day filled with a lot of hard work and some anxiety on my part.

In closing for tonight I thought I should look at my devotional book for today's reading...Hey! It's Leap Day!!! This only happens once every 4 years, so this is a very significant day!  And would you please read what this devotional and scripture reading says for today:

Oh my goodness! I promise you I did NOT look at this until just now!  What an appropriate message for what I have been going through in this past couple of days.  Trust me, I wanted to figure out a way to keep the old dresser and have the new one too...but it was as if God was trying to help me learn about "letting go" and "letting God" guide me into giving up something that even though it was wonderful and sentimental and special, it was starting to cause me pain not only physically but emotionally.  Letting go of this world and all its attachments is not easy for any of us, but the day will come when we will leave this world behind and all of those "attachments", and God will give us something so much greater on that day...a new home, new peace, and joy for eternity in His Presence.

2 Corinthians 5:17
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

And with those thoughts still swirling around in my mind, I will bid you good night dear friends!

  1. That was a beautiful dresser. I would have had a hard time letting it go.

    1. Yes, it was hard to let it go, but it was time for me to do so. I could barely pull those two big drawers open with my back and shoulder issues, and they would get stuck and not come out straight, and then closing it was just as bad. I went through a lot to get my panties and socks out every day! LOL. Now with this new dresser it's easy peasy! It was time. I pray for a younger, stronger person to claim the dresser and help it continue on in a new place for as long as it is able.

  2. I loved everything here. All of the beautiful wildlife photos with new babies on the way. Yippee! I enjoyed reading about your Grandmother's dresser and marveled at God's timing on the devotion. He is amazing and it's fun to observe all of the times something like that happens that coincides with what we're going through or studying. When Dennis and I first married his Grandpa was moving in with Mom & Dad. We "inherited" his big dresser, very similar to yours. I loved that dresser but ended up giving it to a cousin when we moved to Spokane. It was hard to let it go but glad it stayed in his family. Now I'm wondering if they still have it???
We've been studying the book of Esther in our Thursday night study with our Spokane church. We're still meeting on Zoom as we did during covid. We just continued when we moved back home. One of the things that has struck me lately is how often I'm hearing the phrase, "for such a time as this." That's what Mordecai told Esther, that maybe God had her in that place just "for such a time as this." Now I'm hearing that phrase almost daily, whether it's on the Christian radio station, a youtube video or something I read. I think we are living in special times right now and Bible history is being played out before our eyes in the middle east. What do you think of all of this? Maybe The Day will arrive soon and very soon. I sure hope so! I can't wait to see Jesus. Do you think I'm crazy Pam? We just finished our study a little while ago so this is all fresh on my mind.
Wishing you a blessed night and a beautiful day tomorrow. Praying for all of you and please tell Benton and Rose that I love seeing their happy faces on your blog. It's obvious how much they love each other and YOU. You are a blessed woman my friend.
    Blessings and love,
    Betsy

    1. Oh, yes, Betsy, I DO believe that we are living in special times, and that verse in Esther has long been a special one for me. I may have to write about its significance sometime, because I have experienced situations where I knew God had put me where I was "for such a time as this". And in the grander scheme of life and end times, yes, we are here to spread God's love and blessings and tell of His wondrous works and salvation for as long as we are able. Jesus IS coming soon, and we need to be ready ourselves and help prepare others to be ready as well. Thank you for your kind words and always your sweet visits. Glad you are feeling better now. Take care my friend.

  3. It's a good lesson to learn about letting earthly things go. I'm certainly going through it too as I undergo my now years long decluttering project. Some things are easier to release than others but letting go seems to release us from a weight that can drag us down. I'm glad you were able to let the dresser go and I'm sure someone else will love it.

    1. Yes, "letting go seems to release us from a weight that can drag us down"...so very true, and I actually feel that "release" right now since letting go of this dresser. It was a big step for me, and I have a long way to go, as my home is lovingly referred to as the "family museum", where many old artifacts are stored. Although I enjoy most of them, there are far too many and I know my kids won't want them when the time comes, and so little by little I want to release them to new homes where they will be loved and cherished but also so that I can move on to a lighter load for these remaining years of life. It's not easy for me at all, but I do feel so much better after taking this first step! Thank you for your kind words. I hope you have a blessed and wonderful day!

  4. I see those two eggs!
Very interesting about the academy there. I can imagine how interesting it was to watch.
The dresser! It's beautiful and I would have had a hard time letting it go, but I can understand why you did. I bet someone will be thrilled to have it.
I see your son is named after your Grandpa. I love that too!

    1. Thank you, Mari. Yes, I know someone will be thrilled to have it. I am praying for that person now, whoever he/she may be. May God bless them with all the love that has been stored in there for so many years. And yes, our son is named after my Grandpa. It is a unique name and many in my mother's family have that name as either a first or middle name because of my Grandpa. I hope you have a lovely weekend.

  5. I have no doubt that someone will see that dresser and take it home with them, Pamela. It is a beautiful specimen, and I understand your initial reluctance to let it go, but God was telling you differently, and you both listened and heeded. The new dresser is so attractive and truly suits your bedroom decor.
Thanks for the wildlife updates, too.
    Many blessings, my friend!

  6. I can't relate to giving up things, because I don't get attached to things and a large part of me is OCD which makes me get rid of things that have not been used for a year and the very next week find I need it and have to find one at the thrift store. I love your bedrrom and the new dresser and I love love love the quilt on your bed. every room in my house has burgundy in it somewhere. It is great that while you were struggling with the yes/no thing about the dresser, God put the message there for you to find it. I used to read our daily bread every day for many years, and it always surprised me that the right message showed up on the right day for that day.
the school you sat at the lake sounds great and is my first time hearing about one that does that type of schooling.

    1. Be thankful that you are not 'attached to things". I try not to be, but I am rather sentimental and our home is known as the "family museum" because somehow we ended up with so many family "heirlooms" from both sides of the family. We have rarely bought a new piece of furniture because we've had so many pieces given to us over the years, and because of their family connection, they could not easily be disposed of. This was a huge step for me. I'm glad you love the quilt. It was also a gift, not an heirloom...but a gift from a friend who may be like you...she buys things she likes and when she gets tired of it she gives it away. I was fortunate to be close in line when she decided she was tired of this quilt! LOL. It is now getting rather worn with age as well, but I still love it and can't afford a new one, so it will have to do. Thank you for visiting! I hope you have a lovely weekend.

  7. Unlike my dear friend Sandra (MadSnapper), I do become inexplicably attached to inanimate objects. What an emotional struggle to part with that old dresser. I'm always having to remind myself, these are merely things -- not of this world.
I'm so in love with that quilt on your bed; in fact, I'm afraid to put out my mother's for fear it will become soiled. Isn't that silly?
Coming upon those wet suits had to be quite the surprise! That Academy's mission sure sounds wonderful. I learn something new every day!
'Wishing you and John a most blessed one!

    1. As I just wrote to Sandra (MadSnapper), the quilt was a gift to me from a friend. Not an heirloom...I'm thinking she said she bought it at Sears, back when they had really nice stuff at reasonable prices. This friend often bought things like that and when she got tired of it she'd give it away, and I made sure to be close in line when she "cleaned house". LOL I actually have quite a bit of furniture and other items from her housecleaning projects...all good stuff. And regarding your mother's quilt, why not either hang it on a wall or on a special quilt rack where you can see it and enjoy it? Maybe just put it out seasonally on your guest bed or some other place where it won't get "used", but can be appreciated. My guest room is kind of my quilt display room, and I rotate them around seasonally. This particular quilt is getting a bit worn and I may have to retire it soon before the pieces start getting ripped apart, but I am enjoying it in the meantime. Life is too short to be left in a box or bag somewhere in a closet...enjoy the treasures you have now because you can't take them with you! Thank you for visiting. I hope you and Tom also have a lovely and blessed weekend!

  8. Oh my! What a beautiful 123 year old dresser. I'd have a hard time letting it go. Pam, if I had the way to get it here and had the space, I would have bought from you in a heart beat!! I do like your new dresser though and I really love the quilt on your bed. Do you remember where you got it?
I have always drooled over the furniture that Ben and Rose remade and put in the shop. My taste and style!
How exciting that Mr. and Mrs. Stork are expecting!
    Have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you, Melanie. It definitely wasn't an easy decision, but once I made it, there was no turning back, and I feel very relieved and thankful that I listened to that "still small voice" of God nudging me move forward! Regarding the quilt, it was a gift from a friend, who bought it at Sears years ago I think. She used to buy a lot of different quilts from them, and when she'd get tired of one she would give it away. I was fortunate enough to be standing in line when she cleaned house! LOL. So anyway, the quilt is not an heirloom, and it is starting fray in places around the pieces, so I may have to retire it someday and quit using it on the bed. But I do enjoy it. Anyway, if you want my grandma's dresser, I believe it is still available at the Thrift Store. Although I haven't asked. They are only open until 1:00 each day. I may check on it tomorrow, but then again, maybe I won't. LOL. Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Crane are expecting the Stork to bring them two new babies in a few weeks. LOL. Have a lovely weekend.

  9. The new dresser is the one my grandmother bought for me when I began in high school. It was cherry and I had a nightstand and the bed was a 4 poster cherry wood too. It was very gone with the wind style and I adored it. Nice to see the birds coming around to nest. Now please be careful of the headless lake creatures. You can never be too careful.

    1. Oh wow, you recognize that dresser? This one is maple I believe. It is hardwood and very well built, and gently used. I am very thankful for it and am appreciating the ease of which it is to open and close the drawers. It was a real struggle just to get my undies and socks out of those drawers every day! Sometimes I just left them folded on top of the dresser because it was too much trouble/pain to open and close the drawers to put them inside. Hopefully some younger and stronger person will enjoy my Grandma's 123 year old dresser. I am happy to be free. And yes, those headless lake creatures definitely made me pause and think before I stepped any closer! It really was an eerie sight! LOL. Have a lovely weekend!

  10. Letting go can be so hard. Pam, those drawers in the old dresser are HUGE! I can't imagine how hard they were to open and close! My goodness. Your new dresser is perfect and fits the space as if made for it. You did good. Thanks for the update on the cranes and blue birds!! Happy weekend!

    1. Thank you, Terri. Yes, those drawers were very huge and heavy, and they never did glide very well, so it was always a pain in my back and shoulders/arms to get them open and closed again. I am so thankful for this newer dresser...the drawers glide so nicely and now I can get my undies and socks out without pain! LOL. Have a blessed and lovely weekend.

  11. We still have Gold Finches in residence here. They'll probably be leaving any day now. Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for Hummingbirds. They might be sighted as early as March 10th or so. Let us know if they are in your area. I'm going to get our Hummer juice ready next week. Love my "humming bee's". lol
Beautiful dresser. If I was looking for furniture it would totally come home with me and be loved.

    1. Oh thank you for the heads up about the Hummers. I do need to get my feeder ready. Usually it seems they don't show up here until closer to the end of March, but you never know! It's better to be prepared. And I wish you could come take my grandma's dresser home, but I warn you, it's been a real struggle for me with my back and shoulder/arm issues to open and close those drawers every day to get my undies and socks in and out! Sometimes I just left them folded on top of the dresser because it was just too much trouble. So now I can keep things neat and tidy and it doesn't hurt to open the drawers! Hooray! Have a lovely weekend. We keep getting intermittent showers...right now as I speak there is one and the sun is shining! I better go look for a rainbow!

  12. Getting rid of precious furniture IS a big deal. I have made it my habit to not shop/visit stores where I have donated or put on consignment things I've determined I cannot keep. I don't want to stir up the emotions that can arise from deep within.

The "new" furniture you have acquired is beautiful and fits into your style of decor very well. You have a very pleasant, homey place to live and I always enjoy the photos you share.

Lots of memories in that old dresser that belonged to your grandparents, and it's a blessing that you were able to get so much use out of it. I always enjoy seeing the pictures of the birds in your posts. That devotional is so appropriate and true! I hope you have a good weekend. See you again soon!

  15. Thank you, Pam, for sharing this story about the family dresser, 100+ years is a long time for it to have been in use within the family. Seeing the note in the drawer and reading about where you stored your journal was so sweet. Even though the decision to replace it was difficult given its history, it was the right one and as you said, hopefully someone will enjoy it as much as yourself. When we cleared out my late parent’s home, my brother and I did not find it too difficult to let furniture go as we recalled the memories vs. the things. And, you have done the same here.

  16. I agree with the post above mine... Your bedroom looks so cozy and comfy (very pretty too) I'm at the stage where I have to let go of things too. Hubby and I have lived in our present house a very LONG time, and we have accumulated too much stuff. We're not big shoppers (Honest) it's mainly because we have a difficult time of letting go of things.
