Some of my calendars say that Tuesday, September 22nd is the first day of fall, and others say the Autumnal Equinox doesn't arrive until Wednesday, September 23rd. Which is it??? So I looked it up online and this is what I discovered...The Farmer's Almanac says this:
Fall Equinox 2026: When Is the First Day of Fall?

Quick Reference: Fall Equinox 2026First day of fall 2026: Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at 8:05 p.m. EDT (5:05 p.m. PDT, 00:05 UTC on September 23)
Also called: Autumnal equinox, September equinox
The rule: The Sun crosses the celestial equator heading south
What it means: Day and night sit roughly equal across the globe
Word origin: Latin aequus (equal) plus nox (night)
Next milestone: Winter solstice on Monday, December 21, 2026
When Is the Fall Equinox 2026?
The 2026 fall equinox lands on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at 8:05 p.m. EDT. In other US and Canadian zones that is 7:05 p.m. CDT, 6:05 p.m. MDT, 5:05 p.m. PDT, 9:05 p.m. ADT (Atlantic Canada), and 2:05 p.m. HST. In Coordinated Universal Time the equinox falls at 00:05 UTC on Wednesday, September 23, which is why some international tables list the September equinox under the 23rd rather than the 22nd.
What Is UTC?
UTC—Coordinated Universal Time—is the 24-hour time standard used as a basis for civil time today. All time zones are defined by their offset from UTC. The offset is expressed as either UTC- or UTC+ and the number of hours and minutes.
Primarily, UTC is based on mean solar time at the prime meridian running through Greenwich, UK. For every 15 degrees of longitude east or west, mean solar time changes by 1 hour. Two time components are added together to translate mean solar time to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC): International Atomic Time (TAI) measured by atomic clocks and Universal Time (UT1), the actual length of a day on Earth.
In theory, the UTC offsets countries use should reflect the local mean solar time. However, many time zone boundaries are distorted by geographical and political factors.
No Daylight Saving Time in UTC
Daylight Saving Time (DST) is not used for UTC as it is a time standard for all time zones.
So I hope this explains it for everyone! I know I was confused...but now I guess we can start celebrating the beginning of Fall today, and keep celebrating all night until tomorrow! LOL. What do you do to celebrate the beginning of Autumn? Well, maybe it's time for something made with pumpkins or apples or both...
This was seen on Facebook, which started the conversation with my sister about what day was truly the beginning of Autumn...and now you know!
So I guess we have a few more hours until Fall reaches our area. There is still hope that the temps will "Fall" right in with the entrance of Fall. Woo...that was a lot to say!! Actually, Just in knowing Fall is here makes me feel good. Great is thy Faithfulness..one of my favorites. "Morning by Morning New Mercies I see." how Blessed we are Pamela..
ReplyDeleteIt really feels like Fall here and I'm grudgingly accepting it. :)
ReplyDeleteI put Fall things out in the house on Friday and will have to get working on the porch.
Great is thy faithfulness is such a good song. He is good, season to season, year to year.
The signs of Fall are very subtle in FL but we have learned to recognize them over our 20 years of living here. Great is Thy Faithfulness is the first hymn I memorized!
ReplyDeleteMy blog post yesterday was all about the confusion of when Fall begins.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the explanation ...
I do love the colors of Fall and the feel in the air.
Hope your day goes well.
(((hugs)))
Sue
I am in fall here, but of course pretending.
ReplyDeleteHowdy , I had no idea this post was even up so I just today I saw it and saw that you celebrated your birthday! Love all the pictures and is that a spice cake?--it sure looks good! You look so pretty in the pictures and very happy and I'm so glad Rose cooked that good meal for you, and cake too! My goodness YES.....IT'S STILL SO HOT here, not like Fall at all, but hopefully soon! It's too hot to even porch sit. I'd like to do some more gardening, but it's just too hot out there yet, LOL. HUGS!!
ReplyDeleteThis was a spur of the moment post, in response to the debate I was having on Facebook with my sister about what day was actually the beginning of fall, so of course I looked it up online so we could have the details! I thought if I was confused, probably everyone else was as well! Now we all know! And yes, it's been hot here too, but thankfully it's starting to cool down...and in time for my birthday on Friday! Supposed to be in the 60's in the morning and low-mid 80's in the afternoon! Hooray! Re: the cake, no it was a regular yellow cake with homemade buttercream frosting. It was very good. Rose is a great cake baker! I'm hoping for an apple pie on Friday if my sister is able to get one. I doubt she'll have time to bake one herself, so that's fine! It's the thought that counts and just being together is the best part...plus we will be celebrating Shannon's baptism, which will make the day extra special. God is so good! Thank you...(((HUGS)))
DeleteA favorite hymn, Pam!! Now I'm humming it! Fall beginning doesn't mean the same thing to us in Florida as it does to friends "up north"-- no matter the date! I'm just hoping for more rain and lower temps in a few weeks! xo
ReplyDeleteThanks for helping clear up some of the muddy mental waters, Pam!
ReplyDeleteNo matter the hour, I'm just delighted my favorite season's begun. Now I need to begin putting out some appropriate decor ... that always lifts my spirits!
A lovely hymn, dear Pam! I do love Autumn. Here in Montreal the temperature is cooler and comfortable! And some leaves are changing on the trees....gradual. It is beautiful, crisp, cool and I am enjoying it very much. Thank you so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWe are just minutes away from the Autumnal Equinox and I am ready and excitedly waiting even though my day here in Ohio is gray and misty.
ReplyDeleteIt is sweater weather!!
Fall is my all-time favorite season. Hopefully it will get a little cooler.
ReplyDeleteThat UTC time zone rabbit hole is a genuinely satisfying answer to a debate that's confused plenty of people! Pumpkin lattes and apple cider by candlelight sound like a lovely way to celebrate the season even while Florida keeps the AC running, Pamela.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all that you have written. the hymn rings in my head.
