Welcome to my "Open Window"...a place of hope, encouragement, and adventure as we journey down the road from "Closed Doors" to the new opportunities God places in our pathway. I hope you will take the time to go back and follow the trail of mixed blessings and fears, failures and triumphs from the past and side-trips in the present. Perhaps it will conjure up some of your own special memories, and be an invitation for you to share with others. I look forward to spending this time with you!
Welcome to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4... Let's talk about your week okay?
1. Is anything interesting on TV this week? What will you be watching? The new season of Maine Cabin Masters started last week, and I love watching each new episode. I have to get it through my Prime membership and pay for the season to be able to stream it. But it's worth it to me. I enjoy watching them so much...it reminds me of when we lived in Maine. I love to hear their Maine accents as they talk and watch them interact with each other...plus I LOVE the cabins that they restore and the stories that go with them. I have long dreamed of having such a cabin to go to and to have family and friends join us there. But since I don't see that happening, I can vicariously watch and dream along with them..
2. Any books on your horizon right now? What will you be reading?
I will be starting this book probably tonight. I just finished reading the two below, and I must say that I am enjoying all of the books by this author, Rhys Bowen. It's a little different from my normal type of book, but I find them intriguing and entertaining, so I will probably continue reading her books as long as our library has more for me to read! Thankfully she'a quite a prolific author!
Here's my new reading buddy...he really enjoyed sitting in my lap while I read...such a sweetie pie.
3. What's been on the menu lately? Any new recipes caught your eye? I am drawing a blank here. We haven't had anything exciting or interesting lately that I can think of. LOL. However, with all of the nice rain we've had recently, our tomatoes and squash are growing, so I guess I need to be looking for some good recipes to use them...although most likely they will go into salads...I love to slice up fresh yellow squash or zucchini into my salads. I use them instead of cucumbers, because cucumbers give me indigestion.
4. Who will you spend time with this week?
My hubby of course, and probably we'll see Scott on Sunday and I'm sure Benton will be around as his wife Rose is leaving on a trip with her sisters this weekend to go up to Minnesota for a week to visit her father and other other siblings who live there.
This past weekend Benton went on a ride with us as Rose was working, and we drove down (about 20
miles) to Ft. McCoy and Salt Springs, which is where we used to live. Our objective was to visit this place that I've wanted to see for years, but it was never open at a convenient time. I saw recently that they are now open every Saturday, so we decided to check it out.
Their sign is rather faded out...
Anyway, this place has always had such interesting looking "Stuff and Such" outside, and I've always wanted to visit, but like I said, I never saw it open until recently.
I love this old sink...but have no place to put it.
This sign is over the entrance:
And boy! It sure lived up to that sign...talk about a step back in time...there was SO MUCH STUFF!
Antiques, tools, old books, sewing machines, all kinds of STUFF!
And can you believe I did not buy one thing??? I am rather proud of myself. But it was fun looking! I've satisfied my curiosity!
Of course, no trip down there to Salt Springs would be complete without stopping by the Lake Kerr boatramp and then on to drive by our old house to see what else they've changed...
Lake Kerr...it was a cloudy and drizzly day, but still beautiful.
The front of our old house...note the black bear sign on the fence...Benton made that way back when, and it is about the only thing they haven't changed...lol.
The back yard is totally different...no more secret garden, they cut down all the trees and plants we planted...it's totally changed...but it's not my house anymore, so they can do whatever they want. It's just sad that they didn't appreciate the things that made it beautiful to us.
Reminds me of this song, "The World's Not My Home, I'm just a passing through"
Enjoy listening to Jim Reeves singing...
Lyrics
This world is not my home
I'm just a-passing through
My treasures are laid up
Somewhere beyond the blue
The angels beckon me
From heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home
In this world anymore
Oh Lord, you know
I have no friend like you
If heaven's not my home
Then Lord, what will I do?
The angels beckon me
From heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home
In this world anymore
I have a loving mother
Just up in Gloryland
And I don't expect to stop
Until I shake her hand
She's waiting now for me
In heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home
In this world anymore
Oh Lord, you know
I have no friend like you
If heaven's not my home
Then Lord, what will I do?
The angels beckon me
From heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home
In this world anymore
Just over in Gloryland
We'll live eternally
The saints on every hand
Are shouting victory
Their songs of sweetest praise
Drift back from heaven's shore
And I can't feel at home
In this world anymore
Oh Lord, you know
I have no friend like you
If heaven's not my home
Then Lord, what will I do?
The angels beckon me
From heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home In this world any more
Okay, I gotta get a move on today. I hope you enjoyed this. Have a blessed and happy day!
I just love that song! There is a young couple in Australia that has been doing concerts there, trying to bring back old hymns and that's one they sing that pops up on my feed. What a fun place to visit! I'd love to wander through there. Good to drive by the old place too, but sad they cut down all the trees. Your tomatoes are looking fabulous!
Oh that salvage place looks fun, smiles. We love Maine Cabin Masters too, but I was too tired to watch it last night. I always catch up on the weekends ON Demand. Wishing you a beautiful day, smiles.
That's quite the "old stuff" store! Reminds me of an antique place I'm heading to on Saturday!!
I feel the same you do about the old house where I grew up...out in central NYS.....we loved that house and the new owners (it's probably changed hands over time..my parents sold it in 1982) have not kept it up nice at all like my parents did although they did improve the driveway. Love the old hymns!!
I considered getting Josh a tomato plant to grow. He loves tomatoes. I hope you enjoy them. That shop looks like fun, all of the old things. That sink reminds me of one my grandparents had in their house. It was pink though.
Oh my! I remember pink sinks and toilets, etc. The home I grew up in had pink tiles and counters in the bathroom, but the sink, etc. were white. It was a 1950's thing to have pink bathrooms.
Boy, that song is going back into the cobwebs of my mind. Now its going to be on repeat all day long..its not a bad thing (:0) That "Stuff and Goodies" place is quite amazing. Love all the do-dads on the ceiling. Good for you just looking ... its fun to do that now and then. Sad that the new owners got rid of all your beautiful trees and special places. They can't remove your memories though. Cherish them. Sue
We lived in NH and Maine. Went there originally when my hubby was called to pastor a church in NH. Long story short, we left that church but stayed in the area a few more years, across the state line in Maine. Our son Matthew met his wife in our church and they settled in Maine, so that is why our only grandson lives in Maine. We moved back to Florida when our parents were getting older and in need of more attention. Florida is our home state where we both grew up. Maine and NH are both beautiful states, but they have extremely harsh winters and for us "native" Floridians it became a bit too much to handle. I wouldn't mind living there in the summer and fall, however.
I need to suggest we watch more shows like Cabin Masters and less sports! (Or, step out in the sunroom where we've a second television ... duh!) "Stuff and Such" looks like such fun. I could seriously spend time in there. I'm thinking that sink might make a pretty container for a pretty blooming plant.
Jim Reeves has an amazing voice. Love it!! That antique place in Salt Springs looks like such a fun place to visit!! And I, too, love Maine Cabin Masters!! I'm watching the new season and even enjoy going back to some of the earlier ones I've already watched. It would be fun to visit their store and business! Sending a hug and I'm smiling at Blackie sitting on your lap! xo
I love places like that Stuff and Such store, probably because my grandfather was a picker and had three buildings full of "stuff." I learned at a very young age to appreciate the old, the worn, the unusual, and the overlooked. As for the house, we never stayed anywhere long enough to get attached when I was growing up. My grandparents' home was the one constant and it makes me sad when I go by it now and see how much it has changed, but I am glad someone loves it and has made it their home. Thank you for the song. I like Jim Reeves, but I don't think I've heard that one before.
It's always amazing how different people are in their tastes as to what makes a house and garden comfortable. I'd probably be sad too that all the planting I'd done came to naught but at least you enjoyed it while you lived there. The Stuff and Such store is definitely my kind of place but really I have no where to put anything new so it's best I stay out of the stores, lol.
That’s one of my favorite songs. I used to sing with a bluegrass group and that’s one of “our” songs. We sang at different churches. It sounds like a really fun trip last weekend. The old shop is my kind of place. Maybe your mansion in Heaven will be that cottage. I’ve always wanted one too. Maybe we will be neighbors! 💜 This is our last night in the camper. Home tomorrow. I’ll miss the time with Piper. We’ve had some great girl talk moments. Your books look interesting. I may have to look that author up. Blessings and hugs, Betsy
I think my son Matthew is helping Jesus build me a cabin in heaven! That's what I'd prefer instead of a "mansion over the hilltop". LOL. Re: the books I am reading. Although I prefer books that have more of a Christian theme/author, these are not bad and mostly take place in England during the WWII years. You might enjoy them since you have family in England, and could probably relate to some of the historical information in the stories. I guess you are on your way home today. Stay safe and enjoy the ride. Praying for your safety.
I know that feeling, our old home doesn't look the same either, it's hard to realize that it's not our home anymore. I would love to visit Joe's Stuff and Such, now that's my kind of shopping!! Hope you have a very blessed and happy day.
Hello Pam! Thank you for sharing those books. I will look into her books. I love a good little mystery read. You sure do have a cute reading companion. I love a good ole squash casserole or sautéed squash. I am ready for a good garden-fresh tomato sandwich to be honest. I know that isn't everyone's cup of tea. I love them though. :) I hope you have a great rest of your week.
I am back to getting Mom some large print books at the library. She just read the Miss Endicott one. She didn’t really say anything but I a, glad she is letting me get her some books again. The store looks like it would be fun to stroll through. I find I buy very little these days. I am pretty sure I have reached the realization I have to many pretties. Not wanting to get rid of them, just enjoy them. Jeff has done well this year with his tomatoes.
That junk place looked interesting. I'd be afraid I would find some of my old stuff in there and come away feeling nostalgic. (I make it a practice to not shop at any thrift store where I've donated things for that very reason.)
Dear Pamela, your photos are absolutely stunning, dear friend! I love your new feline reading buddy! :) Cats are great companions, aren't they? That old sink is amazing, great memories from the 1950s? Not sure, but yes, I really like it! The junk place looks pretty interesting! I love the sign, "Come take a walk back in time". Oh, yes! I love to reminisce! And I love Jim Reeves, thank you so much for sharing the video! Thank you so much for sharing, and I hope you have a wonder filled weekend ahead!
Joe's looks like quite the place to roam around. I'm going to look up that author and see if I can get her books from the library. And... now that song is going to be in my mind singing all the rest of the day.
Thank you for visiting here today. I would love for you to sign my guestbook and let me know you stopped by. I always enjoy reading your comments and words of encouragement! May you be blessed as you go on your way. Please come back and visit again soon.

I love how little Blackie has found his home with you and sits on your lap while you read.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you had lived in Maine. Wow. As a child or after you were married and had a family?
