Saturday Revue

Here it is Saturday afternoon, and there really isn't much to report! It's been TOO HOT to do much of anything!

This is our current reading on the themometer on the back porch. (Around 3:00 pm) However, I understand that the "heat index values" are up to 111 degrees, according the the severe weather alert we have on our phone app.  That's pretty doggone hot for us here in this part of Florida, and there's no rain in sight!  We are extremely thankful for our central AC, which is running all the time, but it is doing the job! Thank You, Lord, for whoever evented air conditioning!

Even though I grew up in Florida in the days before air conditioning...we didn't have it at home, or at school, or at church, or in our cars, or anywhere!  Somehow we survived, but looking back I do remember that as a child I either stayed outside and played...
yes, that's me...keeping the intruders out of my wood pile fort. LOL

or I sat in front of a fan a lot.  I wore as minimal amount of clothes as I could and it seems like we made koolaid or juice popsicles in those tupperware things and enjoyed eating them to cool off. Life was much simpler then, even if it was hot! The windows were open at night and we could hear the tree frogs "singing" back and forth to each other. Sometimes they got so loud, especially after the rain, that we could hardly sleep for the noise. But thankfully my Daddy had put a big attic fan up in the attic, and he would turn that on at night and it would pull in a nice, albeit humid, breeze and also the whirring of the fan helped drown out the sound of the frogs.

My Sister Doris (washing the dishes) and I , drying the dishes, barefooted and trying to keep cool in our short shorts in the summertime.

I know some of you may live where you don't really need central air conditioning that much, but trust me, if you lived in Florida in the summertime, you'd be very very thankful to have it.

So what else is new?  Let's see,

There's a new store in town!  "The Trading Post" at Deep Creek...
Deep Creek is the Farmer's market place where our son sets up a booth a couple of times a month in their outdoor Saturday morning market.  But now they have added a very nice indoor "Trading Post" store, where vendors can sell their products  every day (Wed-Sun) without having to be there because the store owners will handle the sales.  It's a lot like what we did at Dixie Cottage, and since that store is no longer in our town, the timing was just right for this new store to open.

No, this isn't our son's booth, but he does do similar work as this, and I thought it was interesting that this fellow's store name is "Benjamin's Sawmill".

Our son Benton doesn't have a booth yet in this store, but he does plan to set up one soon. He's just been too busy with their other projects to do this one too.

Some of you who remember our Dixie Cottage days may remember these items...yes, this is the same woman who was in our store, with her beautifully made bird baths and bird feeders, crafted from vintage glassware...

You may also recognize the items in these photos below!  I was surprised to see these pictures of MY birdfeeders that I purchased from her a few years ago. I had sent these pictures to her, showing how much our birds loved them, and she had asked permission to use these photos in her booth display some time ago. I'd forgotten about that, and when I saw these pictures today I was so surprised!!
You may recognize our Sand Hill Crane family when they had two little colts! This was several years ago!

Here's another interesting woodworker booth.  I love these items...and so many more that are there for sale in this new store.

Many many interesting things to look at...

And I found something special for Sunshine and Blackie!
These two little mice are stuffed with catnip!  I was so excited to get them and couldn't wait to give them to our kitties!

LOL! Here's Sunshine...he got up and moved away and wouldn't go near it!
Blackie wasn't there at this time, so I am still waiting as I write to show it to him. I will keep you posted.

Okay, I tried again when I fed them.  Blackie sniffed the mouse, but was more interested in eating.  Sunshine gave it a wide berth once again.  Wouldn't even sniff it. So...maybe mice stuffed with catnip isn't exactly their "thing". LOL. I think they'd prefer the real deal...you know...real mice? LOL. Thankfully I don't have any of those to offer them.
I suppose since these kitties have been raised in the wild they aren't interested in fake toys. Oh well, I tried. LOL.

This is how they wait for me to bring them their breakfast in the morning...

The longer I stall, the closer they get to my window! LOL.

But this is how they spend the rest of the day...
On these "dog days of summer" I can't say as I blame them.

Thankfully while I was writing this earlier this afternoon, the sky turned dark and I could hear thunder in the distance, and sure enough, we got a surprise afternoon thunderstorm!  It cooled things off all the way to 92 degrees! LOL.  But we are truly thankful for the rain, and also that it didn't bring any strong winds or other severe weather.  It was a good reminder to be patient and wait on the Lord, and He will bring good things to pass!!

Psalm 37:3-8 has some good reminders for us today...

"3 Trust in the Lord, and do good;
Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
4 Delight yourself also in the Lord,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him,
And He shall bring it to pass.
6 He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,
And your justice as the noonday.

7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;
Do not fret—it only causes harm.

I underlined the words that show us a better way to live, especially in these difficult times when the world is trying to go in the opposite direction of what this psalm is teaching us to do.  If we can just remember these words and apply them to our own hearts, we would be amazed at how much better we will feel and get along no matter what is happening around us.
Trust, Dwell, Feed, Delight in the Lord, Commit, Rest, and Wait on the Lord, Do Not Fret, Cease from anger, forsake wrath, and again, Do not fret!
God's Word is right and true...we just need to believe and do what it says.  Amen!!

Have a blessed and beautiful rest of your weekend, my friends!!

  1. Your comments around the verses are so true. I was just thinking the other day that no matter what happens, it seems like the media is just ready to turn it in to a hate fest. Let us just look for all the bad and hate rather than any good. I am just over it. I am ready to move on to better thoughts. It is why I tend to leave the room when Hubby turns on the news.
Part of that verse has been the focus for June and July with the little ones at church. We don't do a Vacation Bible School, but we have a theme for the two months in the preschool and elementary age. This year for the preschoolers it has been a western them. On the stage where the little ones hear someone tell the Bible story for the week, there has been a western setting with horses on the stage. At least their faces anyway. One is named Trusty. All the little ones got a Beanie Baby horse named Trusty last week to help them remember they could trust God at all times. It was quite cute and my 2 little grandsons loved it. They had been saying the verse as they can say it..."Trust in the Lord with all your heart." Proverbs 3:5. Just so cute and warms my heart to see them.
It was rainy this week, but we needed it so I won't complain. I think it was supposed to cool things down, but I think it just made it like standing over steaming pot.
    Those kitties really are adorable.

  2. Wow, y'all were 98* today!? Ouch. We were nearly that here in SE Georgia. Lawdy it's hot! I grew up in Titusville. Summers were sit in front of the fan, make ice cold desserts, live in the pool or the nearby pond, go to the beach, etc. Yep. That was my childhood too. I don't like hot weather. It's supposed to start raining again next week. Sure hope the heavens open up again soon to cool things off. Is it Fall yet?
I don't listen to the media much anymore. All our news is off freelance conservatives on YouTube, like Neil Oliver, Liberal Hivemind, Tousi TV, and some Fox news. I trust them more than the hateful Soros backed mouth pieces going under the guise of "news". I know y'all are careful about your sources too. I think we're all waking up to how the "news", schools, government, etc. has been lying to us for years and years. God says He always brings the truth to light. He sure does.
The cats are so cute. And the pond is looking nice, as always. What a beautiful view y'all have every day. That makes me smile too.
    Blessings. ❤️

  3. Amen and Amen! Your childhood sounds and looks much like mine was Pamela. No A/C and we didn't know any better. Now? I honestly don't know if I could survive heat like we had today without it. At 9:00 am when I left to meet my sister it was already 98 with the heat index! Way too hot. I'm looking forward to the mountains next week. While it may be hot, the humidity won't be there.
I really like those little shops with all of the creative talent there. I love to stand and ready the signs that are in shops like that.
Too bad the kitties didn't like the mice. They may change their minds if they get used to seeing them. on the porch. It was fun to see the photos of the crane family in early times. The little ones are so small and grow so quickly.
We rarely watch TV anymore. In fact almost 0% television. We watch mostly YouTube, several of the same ones mentioned by Sparky. The news is so terrible leaning these days. Please remember to pray for the Druze people and fellow Christians in Syria. I heard and saw videos of today that were awful there. You men forced to balconies and rooftops at gunpoint, then forced to jump and shot as they fell. Evil. Pure unadulteraed evil. Please come Lord Jesus.
Love and Blessings to you and John.

  4. I remember those popsicles, and laughing at our tongue's reflection in the bathroom mirror! Grape was my favorite, but orangy-orange a close second. I, too, don't recall ever feeling unbearably hot like nowadays when the mercury approaches triple digits. Makes we wonder how our grandparents -- and theirs -- handled weather extremes. Those woodwork creations are so fun; I love stuff like that.
    Have yourselves a beautiful day!

  5. We’re always 98 or higher in the summer. Actually that’s bearable - but once it goes into triple digits, mentally it starts to affect me. It just doesn’t seem natural to have triple digits outside of Death Valley!
Oh I love the cats. I knew they wouldn’t like the toys. Those are usually for inside cats. They like the real thing. My outdoor cats I used to have didn’t need the toys, scratching posts, litter boxes. Inside cats need those things or they will get neurotic.
    Have a wonderful day!

  6. I don't know how we survived without a/c here in Georgia during the summer let alone Florida, Pamela. We did, however, with fans, especially our attic one that moved air throughout the house at night. I remember making those same types of popsicles for my own kids when they were little. That's so neat that the lady who makes the bird feeders featured your photos. I'm sure that boosts her sales tremendously. Enjoy your Sunday and stay cool!

  7. I am so grateful for AC too. Never had it growing up since we lived in the San Francisco Bay Area.. we had our own AC via the fog. We lived a mile from the ocean. I have to admit that I do not miss the drizzle and heavy fog that was so hard to drive in. (scary too)
I thought all cats loved catnip...interesting, but I know nothing about kitties anyhoo.
I am taking the verses to heart that are at the end of your post, especially "Do Not Fret".
    Thanks
    Sue

  8. The big treat at Grandma's house was those KoolAde Tupperware popsickles! We didn't have AC at home, in the car, or in school... but I grew up in Ohio and there were only about two weeks in August when we might have enjoyed a little AC. Now, I couldn't get through a day in Florida without it! Whew!! I enjoyed your post, Pam, and am catching up with folks a little at a time, when I can! xo

  9. howdy Pam! Loved all these pictures. Sure enjoyed shopping in the new store with you, saw so many neat things! Super loved how the one lady used your pretty pictures of your bird feeders, that looked GREAT! We got a free mouse attached to a package of fur ball snacks for our kitty and he didn't much pay it any attention til Mr. Front Porch tied it to a RIBBON, and moves it for him. OH HE LOVES IT......will chase it and leap and pounce and even do back flips over that silly tiny mouse! It looks to be about the same size as the ones you got and pretty sure ours has catnip too. It's a regular part of his day now, every day at the SAME TIME, and he won't let us forget it, HA HA LOL. Yes, the heat is awful and the storms just leave worse humidity, LOL. How is the kitchen refresh coming along for Rose and Benton? I bet they are plum tuckererd OUT. LOL. PS....loved the cute pictures of you and Doris on a long ago HOT SUMMER day. Yes, we made those popsicles too and at those constantly, sure helped.

  10. Hi Pamela. It's good to see that Sunshine and Blackie are doing well. The Trading Post looks like such a fun place to do some browsing and maybe spend some $$$. I would love to go there and visit Rose and Benton's booth. I love their fun wood signs and furniture! It was fun to see the pictures of you from a few years back (10 years?1? maybe just a bit longer than that ;-) )Yes, it's hot here in Utah too, but we haven't been up to 100 too many days and we don't have the humidity that Florida has. I hope you have a great week. See you again soon!

  11. I remember your bears at your former home. Now God sent you cats. I think we survived because summers were not as brutal back then. I remember when seriously humid days were more rare. Things have changed a lot. I think weather goes through stages and lately it's the tantrum stage.

  12. I did a bit of digging around about the east coast climate and yes indeed, it was cooler in the past and has now gotten a lot hotter and especially since 2000. We need a giat fan installed over us.

  13. Amen! in thanking the Lord for whoever invented A/C!!! In this current heat wave, fans just aren’t enough.

You wrote about the attic fan your father installed. When I was little, my grandfather in Tulsa would turn on the attic fan at night and that was a help.

  14. Hi Pamela, a day without Blackie and Sunshine is well...dull, I guess. Thank you so much for sharing their photos, they are beautiful cats!
I too am very grateful for air conditioning. Today I am extremely grateful that I don't need the air conditioning here in Montreal, as the temperatures were about the upper 60's to low 70's Fahrenheit, partly sunny, partly cloudy and breezy! My kind of weather! I took a 2 to 3 hour walk, yes, I did! And I took plenty of photos as well, which I will share in my upcoming posts.
God bless you and thank you for sharing.

  15. Love all of the shops within the shop! Our orange cat that looked just like Sunshine, never learned to like catnip so maybe orange guys don't like it! We had only a few sprinkles from today's storm but every break from the heat is appreciated!

  16. When you mentioned the heat index being higher than the actual temperature, Pam, it reminded me of our summer days in VA. We used to make sure that the outdoor chores were done by early afternoon because the grass would be too wet to cut because of the dew. Maybe the cats will find the catnip is an acquired like.
