Friday Foto Friends~Cozy Memories Flashback to 2017

Good Morning Friday Foto Friends!  I didn't have anything new to share with you today, so I thought I would go back into the archives and find something from an earlier October post to share with you.  This was written while we still lived in our previous home, the one I called our "Camp in the Woods House".  I wish I could say it was chilly enough here now to do this again, but we haven't quite reached that state of bliss yet.   So this can be a wishful thinking post for today...something to look forward to hopefully not too much farther into the future!  What are some things you are looking forward to doing this fall? Is it cold enough yet where you are to light a fire and have some hot cocoa?

(Original post 10/27/2017)
Come sit beside my fire with me....

The cocoa is warm...and the friendship is free...

"A man ( or woman) who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother."
Proverbs 18:24

"Therefore comfort each other and edify one another,
just as you also are doing."
I Thessalonians 5:11

"And above all things have fervent love for one another, for
love will cover a multitude of sins."
"Be hospitable to one another without grumbling."
I Peter 4: 8-9

"And now abide faith, hope, love, these three;
but the greatest of these is love."
I Corinthians 13:13

Welcome to Friday Foto Friends...inspired by the first cold snap of the season here in Florida...a wonderful excuse to turn on the "wood stove" (yes, it is electric...but still warm and cozy...with no mess to clean up!)...and bring out the old fashioned stacking cocoa mugs that I grew up with, first as a child on the farm in Pennsylvania, and then in our home in Florida...(where we moved when I was six years old)

There were originally six of these cute little cups, one for each member of our family.  When we were settling our parents' estate, my sister and I each took three of these cups because we had such happy memories attached to them of homemade hot cocoa with marshmallows on a chilly day...and family gathered around the fire enjoying Mom's homemade cookies fresh out of the oven, which made it perfect...(wish I had some of those right now...)

I believe my mother bought these sturdy little cups from a local restaurant in Clarion, PA.  They have to be at least 70 years old...and not a crack in them!

Mom always made the hot cocoa from scratch using Hershey's cocoa.

I assume this is the recipe she used, but she most likely doubled (or tripled!) it for our large family:

Recipe for Four Servings from the Hershey Cocoa Can:
Combine 1/3 cup Hershey's Cocoa, 1/2 cup sugar, dash salt in a saucepan.  Blend in 1/3 cup hot water.  Bring to boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Boil and stir two minutes.  Add 1 quart milk, stir and heat.  Do NOT boil.  Remove from heat.  Add 3/4 teaspoon vanilla.  Beat with rotary beater until foamy.  Makes about 1 quart or 4 servings.

Nowadays I make Hot Ovaltine in the microwave...that's my favorite hot chocolate and the quickest way to do it!

What are some of your favorite family traditions on a chilly fall evening?

I hope you've enjoyed these cozy memories with me. They have certainly made me smile in a nostalgic happy way.

Have a blessed and happy Friday...and go ask someone to come and share a cup of hot cocoa with you!!

Back to the present: Click HERE for a previous post from our current house about having some hot cocoa in front of the fire. I sure hope it cools down enough soon so we can do this again.

Thanks for the cocoa...and the happy memories.

Cold snap in Florida? Does that mean it got down to 70? ;-)

    1. Ha Ha!! Actually it was in the mid-40's the last couple of mornings, and only up to the mid 70's in the daytime. So for us, that is a "cold snap". Clear, sunny, and chilly! Feels like fall!!! Love it!! Thanks for stopping by for a cup of cocoa with me!! Have a blessed day wherever you are!!

  2. We love a cup of hot chocolate, too, Pam. One of our favorite things to do on chilly evenings is to brew a pot of yummy tea and curl up with a good book...or a funny DVD (currently that is watching the I Love Lucy ones). All of your photos today are so crisp and clear and cozy. :) xx

    1. Of course my hot beverage of preference is hot tea, but this is the time for hot cocoa. I just couldn't resist!! And a good book is always by my chair...I am usually reading something every evening. The menfolk here like sports and history and other such stuff on TV, but I prefer to read. However, I like to be in the room with them so I feel like we are doing it all together. Thank you for stopping by for a visit! This was delightful.

    2. After thinking about your comment, Dianna, I have to apologize...I forgot that I asked people to share their fall traditions or fun things to do on a chilly evening...and you shared yours so beautifully. I didn't fully acknowledge that, and I am sorry. I love your traditions and things that you do on a chilly evening. I love funny shows like I Love Lucy especially. Thank you for sharing that. Sorry I didn't pick up on it like I should have the first time.

  3. Loved enjoying your warm fire and hot cocoa Pamela. It was needed here in my neighborhood as the weather was in the low 30's this morning but it's to be expected here. Keep warm (haha) and thanks for the cocoa. Have a day of blessing.

  4. Cozy, indeed, Pamela - the perfect way to take the chill off these cool autumn evenings! And those cups are just too cute! I can't believe they've lasted all these years without a single blemish.
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you, Martha. I think the cups have lasted because they were designed to be heavy duty restaurant ware, and they were made in the USA!!

  5. I enjoyed sitting by your cozy fire with the cocoa in those lovely cups. It's very cold here today and we are further south than usual. I've never seen stacking cups like that. I do like the memory you have from them. I also make my cocoa from the Hershey recipe and enjoy it with cookies as you do.

    1. I guess that cold snap is making the rounds! It's kind of nice for a change, huh? I am happy to hear that you make cocoa the old fashioned way! So much better than that powdered stuff you mix with hot water!! Thank you for visiting today. Go snuggle up and enjoy your cooler weather!!

  6. Oh Pam, your photos look so cozy and inviting today. We're having our first cold snap of the fall--in fact, a hard freeze is expected late tonight/early Saturday. The Scriptures you selected are good ones for your topic. And the mugs? They are cute--clearly made better than stuff today.

    Blessings!

  7. I really love those cups!! I think I need to start looking for some just like them (stackable) when I am out and about looking at antiques! Hot cocoa is SO good on a chilly evening. Homemade is so much better than the instant packets we seem to have too many of.

    1. I so agree...I don't like the instant hot chocolate...too sweet and artificial. Oh, if you ever find any more cups like these I would love to see them! They are truly "vintage" restaurant ware...They are a little smaller than our normal mugs of today, but we just refill them as needed!! Thank you for popping in for a visit. Enjoy your Mt. Dora trip! Wish I could meet you there...but there will be over 100,000 people people so probably not a good idea! Have fun. Take lots of pictures!!

  9. I always liked Saturday evenings growing up at home. Mom would either make caramel popcorn or chocolate fudge and we would watch programs like The Honeymooners (which was just about the only time I would hear my Dad laugh), The Red Skelton Hour, or a Musical Movie such as The Music Man, South Pacific, or Oklahoma. My Dad loved to do a little dancing or "soft shoe" now and then.

    1. Oh, that sounds like a fun Saturday evening at home. Yes, the Honeymooners are a classic that we still love to watch when we can. Loved Red Skelton too, and all those good old musical movies...I wish they were still popular today. My family "had" to watch Lawrence Welk on Saturday nights...my parents wouldn't hear of missing it for anything!!! Precious memories.Thank you for stopping by and reminiscing with me!!!

    1. Oh please do come on down! We will have quite the party! Several others above have already said they would like to come as well! Wouldn't we have such fun? I think it would be so wonderful if there was a way we could all meet someday and have cocoa, tea, coffee...and just visit and laugh and hug and pray and rejoice in being such good friends! Thank YOU, Debbie, for bringing us all together every Friday! I guess until we all get to heaven, this will have to do! But it sure would be fun...

  13. I like hot chocolate. However, I have to monitor my intake of it. I use Swiss Miss Milk Chocolate. I also like hot herbal tea. After Thanksgiving, we put whipped cream on top of the hot chocolate. It is really good that way.

    1. I usually only have hot OVALTINE on a chilly evening when I just need something to warm me up...and ovaltine doesn't have the caffeine of regular chocolate or even tea. I've been a Hot Ovaltine fan since I was quite young. Why do you wait until after Thanksgiving to put the whipped cream on top? Just wondering...I guess because that makes it official?! I tried that on mine the other night, and it was good...not as sweet as marshmallows. Thank you for stopping by for a visit. Always good to sit and visit with you! :)

  14. How I loved seeing this post again, Pamela! Here in Georgia, our second fall blast arrives tomorrow, with the high predicted at only 65. Looking forward to long-sleeves and sweaters. Plus, it's going to be sunny/windy, so I'm hoping to get sheets and towels on the line, too. Love the way they smell when dried outside.
Continue to enjoy your fall in Florida!
    Blessings!

  15. Your cold snap must have missed Alabama. I am still sitting here in shorts and flip flops and at 8 pm it is still in the mid 70's. I understand by Sunday we will be able to feel a tinge of fall.
My mother never made hot chocolate, but my dad did. I was almost an adult before I realized some people bought hot chocolate mix. Dad made ours by the cup using Hersheys cocoa, boiling water, sugar and evaporated milk. The first time I made it I had not watched Dad carefully and instead of 1 T.cocoa to 3 T.sugar, I reversed it. It was a seriously chocolaty undrinkable mess.

    1. Ah! So now I know you must live in Alabama! LOL. I guess I hadn't figured that out yet! But anyway, no worries, this "cold snap" I was talking about happened in 2017...as this was a "flashback post". We still haven't had a decent cold snap here in Florida for this fall yet. I hope whatever you get by Sunday works its way down here too. I love your hot chocolate story! That is truly funny, although I am sure it wasn't at the time! I guess I never thought about making it one cup at a time using the Hersheys cocoa! I am glad you gave us the correct amounts to use!! I will probably stick with my hot ovaltine. I mix it with milk and heat it in the microwave. It's really good, and no chance of messing it up, unless I cook the milk a little too long and it gets a skim on top. Anyway, let's hope for cocoa drinking weather real soon!! I'll think of you when I have a cup! Have a happy weekend.

  16. I don't care if it's 100+ degrees outside ... there's just 'something' about a fireplace! Pretty sure it was one of your posts, Pam, that pushed me over the edge to order one of my own. (TYVM) Tom doesn't always get it, but that's OK; I can't put into words what it does to my mind to sit and sip and watch it.
LOVE the memories you've associated with those cups! I don't recall my mother making hot cocoa that often, but I have saved 3-4 of my parent's random cups which I treasure. Neat post!

  17. That fireplace looks so inviting and homey. Reminds me of my years in Colorado, South Dakota, and Washington State.
