Wednesday Treasures: Unexpected "Gifts" Revisited

Note: January 20, 2021.  I originally wrote this post on 7/22/2012.  In searching for something "new" to share with you today for my "Wednesday Treasures", I was led to this post and thought it was a "treasure" for sure.  On this day when many of us are trying to stay focused on positive things and away from the media, perhaps a review of some of God's "miraculous, spontaneous gifts" in your life as well as in mine might a a good exercise for our hearts and minds.  So as you read through my little list of "gifts", which are really treasures, maybe you will be reminded of some special "gifts" that came to your life at just the right time...something out of the blue that you weren't expecting but that God knew you needed and provided it for you right on time.   So read on and hopefully you will be blessed and encouraged today:

Original Post 7/22/2012:

One of my new blogging friends made a comment on my last "Random Journal Day" post, "Saved from the Abyss by God's Miraculous Intervention", that the two items mentioned in the story, the song of the Meadowlark, and the "smiling" rose, were gifts.  Until my friend pointed this out, I had not really thought of them as "gifts", but indeed they were.  They were gifts sent from God at precisely the right moment to rescue me back from the edge of an abyss that was tempting me to take a step closer to the brink of my own destruction.  Not that I would have done anything really crazy, at least looking back now I don't think I would have...but then again, perhaps God saw something different and sent His messengers to call me back just in time.

Thinking of these miraculous, spontaneous events as "gifts" got me to thinking about other things that have happened in my life that were gifts from God to encourage me or rescue me, or even just to delight me at a time that I needed it most. Without becoming too specific, I will list a few...
  • A phone call from a dear friend at a time when only God could have told her I needed her to call.
  • A card or note in the mail from someone, with words of hope and love and perhaps a little tea-bag enclosed to give me a refreshing reminder of a precious friend.
  • An unexpected monetary gift from a loved one, at precisely the exact moment we needed it...and the exact amount that was required to be paid...and that individual did not know anything about that particular need.
  • Miraculous intervention from the action of a friend's phone call...who changed the course of the doctor's plans at a most critical time just prior to our son's brain surgery...that very possibly saved our son's life.
  • Someone repaying a debt to us that we never expected to receive in this lifetime...and again, at exactly the moment we needed it most.
  • Meeting a new friend who seemed to be able to look right into my heart and see how badly I needed a friend at that time.
  • A song heard on the radio while driving myself to work, that blessed me so completely that I almost had to pull off the road and take time to worship and praise God right then and there.
  • An owl appearing in front of me at the precise moment I needed a sign from God that my Daddy had reached heaven's gate...that was definitely a "God-gift"  (click on this link for "The Last Farewell"
  • A beautiful and precious gift of a baby doll, sent from a dear friend whom I have never met personally...made especially for me...just because she wanted to show me God's love at a difficult time in my life...(Click on this link for "Baby Elva's Story" )
Well, you get the idea...I have to stop or I will never be able to post this story because the list just goes on and on.

Of course the Greatest Gift of all is the Gift of Jesus Christ, My Savior and Lord, Who gave HIMSELF for me, when I most definitely did not deserve His mercy and grace and love.  And He stands ready to present Himself to you as well, if you have not yet accepted His free gift of salvation.  (Ephesians 2:8-10)

I hope that this little exercise has caused you to think about the gifts you have received in your life, and perhaps it might be a good idea to begin your own list. It also makes me want to be more sensitive to ways I can bless others with special "God-Gifts". Once we start thinking this way, we will be amazed at all of the things God will bring to our minds...and we will have to break out into spontaneous praise! His love is so amazing...His mercy so unfailing, His grace is so undeserved...What more can I say?

Thank You, Dear Lord
for Your blessings on me.
And please help me to be a
blessing to others each day.

Amen.

    1. Thank you, Sandi! Yes, I agree with you that the Lord takes great pleasure in blessing us in ways that we never expected. Sometimes it's a rainbow in the clouds, or the discovery of a new flower blooming that we hadn't noticed before...or a new friend on facebook or in blogland that comes along to encourage us! Thank YOU, for being one of those "gifts"!

    1. We all need some reminders of God's grace and goodness toward us today. I love the ways God shows His love toward us when we least expect it. I will share another story tomorrow that happened today, exactly at the precise moment I needed it...further proof of God's amazing love and understanding.

  7. Thank you, Pam; I really needed to read this. By hijacking my heart, the devil-worshippers will have won.

    1. We can't give in to the "devil-worshippers". We cannot let them win. We are stronger and better because of what Christ has done for us. We must never sink to their level. Keep looking upward and onward. God always has a better way!!

    1. Yes, I agree...we often aren't listening for God's still small voice with all of the noise around us...or perhaps WE are making the noise...I agree so much. Thank you.

  10. Oh my! This speaks right into my heart and soul. I am trying to see God in the little things this year. One thing that I have to share is the other day, I stepped outside to clear snow off the deck and was greeted by the cheery whistle of the Chickadee. It was a special gift from God to me.

    1. Oh, how wonderful, Ruth! I love to "chatter" with the chickadees. They love to talk to us. I've been scolded by them many times too, when the bird feeder was empty or I was just getting too close to their space. But they are cute little birds and I enjoy them so much. I am so glad you had a pleasant visit with one too. God often speaks to us through His creation, I think!

  11. This is a beautiful post, friends are such a comfort when we're going through sad times, bad times or good times. Our best friend Jesus will never forsake us, His mercy endures forever. So nice you had them all at this time in your life.

    1. Yes, Mary, we are blessed to have good Christian friends when we need them most...but you are right...Our "best friend" is Jesus, and He will stick closer to us than a brother or a sister. We are truly blessed to know HIM most of all!! Thank you.

  12. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us, Pamela. So many of them brought to mind similar ones we've received. Your invitation to keep a list is a delightful idea. I started mine in 1983. It's become a notebook with nearly 1400 entries--and we're still counting! In 2017 I started "A Celebration of Small Things," a daily gratitude journal. Between the two I've collected a mountain of gifts that demonstrate my Father's faithfulness, power, and love.

    1. That is a wonderful idea, Nancy. Keeping a list of God's blessings becomes a journal of His faithfulness to us to refer to especially during times of feeling sad or neglected. We can see how God has been with us in the past, and it helps us to remember that He is ALWAYS with us, in the small things as well as in the big. Thank you for sharing this with us. What a wonderful blessing to have that notebook full!

  13. What a wonderful post Pamela... so much to thank the Lord for! I always say it is the little things that make life so very special. Many times, it has been a sweet card in the mail, a little package, or an unexpected phone call that was just what I needed. God knows how to bless us, doesn't HE! Many blessings to you dear friend!

    1. Thank you, Marilyn! Yes, it is the "little things" that oftentimes mean the most to us...especially when they are totally unexpected and catch us by surprise at just the moment we needed it most. God is so good to show us His love in these little ways as well as the BIG ways! Hope you are having a blessed and wonderful week.

  14. Pam this is a beautiful post and so so true. I've had so many of those identical things happen to me as well. God never changes, He remains the same today and yesterday and tomorrow as well. And He keeps his promises. Your posts always teach me something, remind me of something, conform something, or just have a comforting word or some pretty pictures! You are always very encouraging. HAVE A HAPPY DAY TODAY!
